At a 1:3 killed to wounded that would suggest around 150,000 wounded and 50,000 Russian forces killed in the war so far.

Is my memory going bad? So corrections are wanted without searching the thread.

Wasn't there a couple of reports a few days ago that the "causality" rate for Ukraine was 300,000?

If that is true, and my memory is serving me well, then wouldn't one say that, that number would be "a stark symbol of how badly" Zippy's war has gone?

I also noticed this report is from the New York Times, the propaganda arm of the WH.

nothing to see here. nothing for a Russian to worry about the attempted overthrow of their country by a coup led by DP agencies, which no one else is allowed to do. Only DP has this right, don't ya know?

And it's not just anti-Russian but very pro-ra-ra-Ukraine. (you can be one without being the other)

It's not just the media either. Military types are thinking Ukraine needs to last until next year to get all the goodies, and that it isn't going to happen. The tidal wave of thought in the west is changing.

The Bakhmut encirclement is reminiscent of the battle of Stalingrad. Which is what Russia did to Germanies 6th Army, and 4th Panzer Division. The 6th Army surrendered and was taken prisoner. Russia captured 91,000 out of about 330,000, and out of those taken prisoners only 5,000 survived the POW camps and were released some 13 years later. (all rough figures).

I think one very valid question to ask is:

Once this encirclement happens and it will happen, what will become of the Ukrainian soldiers inside the circle? If history is any indication, the world may not see them ever again. And like Hitler, don't give an inch, and fight to the last man, will mean a lot of dead Ukrainians unnecessarily.

Second if Zippy doubles down the way Hitler did, with the Kursk battle, because they hate Russians so bad they will kill every Ukrainian to make it so, then the next battle will be worse for Ukraine. But they will have Abrams tanks to die in.

Very sad indeed.

Another example of the US/NATO desperation - these are even less effective than the Russian T-62 - effectively Museum pieces -

The Leopard 1 has a welded hull and cast turret. Armor of this tank is relatively thin. Germans estimated that contemporary Soviet T-62 tank could penetrate frontal armor of the Leopard 1 at a range of 1800 meters. Newer Soviet T-72 tank could penetrate it at a range of over 3000 meters.

My understanding, which could well be wrong, is that the Russians succeeded by suffering huge loses in personal. It has taken them months to get this far; at this pace it would take years to get to Kviv.

I am sure this is NOT news to the weapons experts on this page. In fact, they have probably already mentioned this deep in the technical threads I just skim because they make little sense to me (I'm glad they are there for others). But My German Engineer Housemate gave me a bit of information today that I was not aware of.

She said: "Notice that the Ukrainians want the German Leopard Tanks, but they rejected the offer of the tanks from the UK. That is because the German tanks are OFFENSIVE ONLY, and the English ones are intended for DEFENSE ONLY."

Now it would never have occurred to me that a tank could be primarily only for one purpose or the other. That's, of course, because I have only the tiny amount of interest in military history required to study the topic. For me, it is who won-who lost. What did that do to the people and the cultures that won and those that lost? I'm much more of a social historian and anthropologist than the wonderful folks who can dissect each battle of any given war and discuss it for hours. History needs both.

Anyway, from my perspective, my housemate's observation is - HUGE and IMPORTANT. I mean, military experts might have guessed it right away but I think that most people (like me) won't have a clue. This just screams:

The Ukrainian government has no interest in serious defensive warfare, they think they man an offensive to drive the Russians back to Russia!

That really changes the perspective on things, at least for me, and I suspect for others as well. I mean, I don't know if they can do this or not, but throwing that many eggs into one basket sure is interesting...

Currently Bakhmut effectively cuttoff - currently only one road is somewhat open and not 100% under Russian control (give it a week or two)
The US advised Ukraine to abandon the city weeks ago - but your political leaders did not want the bad optics - so thousands of Ukraine's have died to make them look good!
Withdraw in good order? Maybe a few weeks ago but when this last EXIT is shut you are not going to be marching down the road - it will be every man for themselves a complete rout under active Russian artillery fire.
The few who make it to the "next" line of defense - the THIRD (not past the city but behind it) - as Russia will have broken through the primary 1st and 2nd lines - will hardly do better - less troop, less equipment (hard to run with it) totally disorganized - the only thing that will be the same is thousands more Ukraine's will die!
BTW - I will agree the Ukrainian Army can advance / move - problem is they are NOT moving toward Russia - looks to be the other direction?

I've never heard of the distinction. What immediately comes to mind is cannon stabilization. This might be a subtle way of saying the German tank cannons can remain stable while moving, i.e. can fire while rolling. The Brits might be lacking in that department, and can fire accurately only while sitting still.

Yeah, I've seen the German beer balancing on the tank (a military friend sent it to me, and it was on here as well). I have no idea WHY my housemate said this, but she is an engineer, and she is interested in military hardware (especially pre-1600 but also modern). Me, I haven't got a clue so speculate all everyone wants to but don't expect me to have an answer, though this one sounds like a good one.

They also get to see how the stuff performs against near peer/peer equipment.
Yup, that's been clear for months- if we're luckier than we deserve it'll stay at the "boomboom makers flyin' off dusty shelves faster than fat lady panty packs @ a kmart special sale" and huny pot for defense contractors n depts to skim forever
..but I ain't feelin too lucky these days..

The range of the Ground Launched Small Diameter (GLSDB) glide bombs that the US included in the recent military aid package for Ukraine is enough to hit Russian transportation network & logistics on all occupied territories of Ukraine, except Crimea.

This isn't the Hitler Youth phase, they were up and running early on. They're in the Volkssturm phase, old men and boys.

You know, in spite of drafting the infirm and cripples and children, Hitler never ran out of people to run the press gangs. Good work if you can get it, sending others off to die.
Not to worry - another poster on this board has assured us that 12 year old boys are lining up to help take out the Russian tanks by strapping bombs on themselves and diving under the tanks!
Those would be the Russian tanks that somehow got past all the NATO Leopards - somehow?

The tanks will never make it into combat. They will be shredded on the transport trains or semi-trailers the second they enter the country. While we were making robot dogs that can twerk and robot sex girls the Russkies were perfecting their hypersonic rocket technology and guidance system packages and miniaturizing the whole thing into a handheld killing system. They can kill an entire aircraft carrier battle group from a 1000 miles away and pick off an infantry platoon from a hilltop 5 miles away. Tanks will disintegrate and men will die.

Downfall is a great film. Part of it shows young boys being introduced to war in the fighting for Berlin.

There's a youtube video titled Last Film from the Oder, about children waiting for the Russians to advance toward Berliin. Looking all grown up in oversize helmets. Would have died in minutes.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 345

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its 345th day, we take a look at the main developments.

Published On 3 Feb 2023

Here is the situation as it stands on Friday, February 3, 2023:

  • CIA Director William Burns said the intelligence agency has assessed that the next six months will be “critical” for Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion.
  • Russia, determined to make progress before Ukraine gets newly promised Western battle tanks and armoured vehicles, has picked up momentum on the eastern front and it announced advances north and south of Bakhmut, which has suffered persistent Russian bombardment for months.
  • Russian forces are pushing from both the north and south to encircle Bakhmut, using superior troop numbers to try to cut it off from resupply and force the Ukrainians out, Ukrainian military analyst Yevhen Dikiy said.
  • Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said Russian forces would respond to the delivery of longer-range Western weapons to Kyiv by trying to push Ukrainian forces further away from its borders to create a safe buffer zone.
  • Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said Russia’s arms suppliers would “significantly” increase their deliveries in 2023 to help inflict a “crushing defeat” on Ukraine.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has evoked a famous World War II victory over the Nazis to rally his nation while predicting a Russian triumph in Ukraine.

Diplomacy

  • The German government approved the delivery of Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine from industrial stocks and is in talks over purchasing back 15 Gepard tanks from Qatar to send to Kyiv, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on Friday.
  • European Union leaders will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Friday, bringing the promise of new sanctions against Russia but likely dashing Ukraine’s hope for swift EU membership.

  • EU countries will seek a deal on Friday on a European Commission proposal to set price caps on Russian oil products amid divisions between member states, diplomats said.
  • Poland believes it will be possible to build a coalition of some 40 countries, including the United States, Britain and Canada, by February 10, backing calls to block Russian and Belarusian athletes from the 2024 Paris Olympics, a Polish minister said.
