War is coming only question who will start it
I think that question has already been answered. Magog. The only question to that is who does one think that is. I have my ideas and others have theirs.

He who starts the war has an advantage, if pre-planned and sudden strike on an enemy.
But only for a short while. Pearl, which ended badly for Japan. Just saying there has to be more than just a first strike. And the first strike has to be toto devastation. If not the toto devastation will be on the attackers.

God only knows the timing
True that.

Look at all the rust on the deck. Don't we do maintenance anymore? I know it's a salt water environment but some of the pictures of our ships I've seen lately look like rust buckets while I've seen nice brand new ships that the Chicoms are sporting and some new ships from the Russians as well.

HMEYMIM /Syria/, June 25. /TASS/. MiG-31K fighters capable of employing Kinzhal hypersonic missiles have joined the Russian Navy’s maneuvers in the Mediterranean Sea, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Friday.

"In the course of the joint maneuvers of the Russian Navy’s standing Mediterranean taskforce and aircraft of Russia’s Aerospace Force that kicked off in the eastern Mediterranean on June 25, the crews of MiG-31K planes capable of employing the latest Kinzhal hypersonic missiles that arrived at the Russian Hmeymim airbase in the Syrian Arab Republic the other day have started accomplishing the tasks of mastering the airspace in the maritime zone," the ministry said in a statement.

MiG-31K fighters arrived at the Russian Hmeymim airbase in Syria for the first time, following the upgrade and the extension of the second runway with the complete replacement of the runway’s surface and the installation of new lighting navigational facilities and radio-technical equipment, the statement says.

"Tu-22M3 long-range bombers have also performed their training flights over the Mediterranean Sea," the Defense Ministry said.

Overall, the drills involve five Russian warships, including the missile cruiser Moskva, the frigates Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov and the submarines Stary Oskol and Rostov-on-Don. The aircraft of Russia’s Aerospace Force are represented in the joint maneuvers by Tu-142MK and Il-38 anti-submarine warfare planes, Tu-22M3 long-range bombers and MiG-31K fighters, the ministry specified.

"The hypothetical enemy with the designated characteristics was simulated electronically by the shipborne armament control system," the statement says.

A “miscalculation” in the cat and mouse game with Russia could lead to full blown war, the head of the Armed Forces has warned, after a tense confrontation in the Black Sea this week. General Sir Nick Carter, the chief of the defence staff, said the risk of an “unwarranted -
escalation” involving Britain was “the thing that keeps me awake in bed at night”. There was a standoff between Britain and Russia when a Royal Navy destroyer passed through a contested part of the Black Sea on Wednesday. Russia considers the waters to be its own after - the annexation of Crimea in 2014, but it is recognised by Britain as sovereign Ukrainian territory.

Press Review: Black Sea incident prompts weapon review and Pentagon wary of China’s nukes

Izvestia: Russia’s Defense Ministry considering new regulations after Black Sea incident
The Russian Ministry of Defense is creating a unified procedure for Russian aviation against ships violating the state border in response to the incident involving a British warship in the Black Sea on June 23, Izvestia writes. The new regulations will cover the use of lighter weapons to reduce the risk of serious military incidents since the use of conventional aerial bombs can be too dangerous. Experts believe that provocations in Russia’s territorial waters will become more frequent and the country must be ready to react, but unguided rockets would be enough to demonstrate intentions.

The regulations are now under the consideration of the main command of the Navy and the Aerospace Forces. It will revise the set of weapons that aviation can use to fire warning shots against intruders. A proposal has been put forward to abandon the use of aerial bombs in favor of unguided aircraft missiles, sources in the military department told Izvestia.
In the coming years, incidents like this one with foreign ships may become more frequent, ex-Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ordzhonikidze told Izvestia.

According to the diplomat, the Americans and their allies are testing to see if Russia is ready to resist such provocations. "They not only violate the border off the coast of Crimea but also question the territorial integrity of the country. It is their problem, whether they recognize the peninsula as Russia’s or not. We must defend our territorial integrity," the expert said.
"Even if you launch one or two missiles, then visually it will be perfectly noticeable due to the smoky trail from the jet engine. And the burst itself will not be too large, and the radius of damage is small," military expert Viktor Murakhovsky told Izvestia.

Massive exercise in Black Sea with US comes after Russia warning
Russia has warned the US and UK not to “tempt fate” in the Black Sea. The Black Sea is only one place where there are naval tensions.

On June 21 the US Sixth Fleet announced it would participate in the Sea Breeze exercise that will take place from June 28 to July 10. The US says that “this year’s iteration has the largest number of participating nations in the exercise’s history with 32 countries from six continents providing 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operations and dive teams scheduled to participate.”

This is important because it comes days after a UK warship and Russia appeared to clash off the coast of Crimea. Ukraine claims Crimea, but Russia annexed the area in 2014. There have been other tensions between Russia and Ukraine and Russia and the US, increasingly at sea in recent years. Ukraine is fighting a war against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Russia has warned the UK against what it sees as provocations.

This means that this year’s exercise, as large as it is, has more ramifications for the region. The US says that “Ukraine and the US are cohosting the exercise in the Black Sea with participation and support coming from 32 countries in total: Albania, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States.”

Of interest here is that Israel is participating alongside new peace partners such as the UAE. In addition Israel and Turkey are participating, despite tensions between the two. It is apparently not the first time Israel participated, the country also took part in 2012. Another angle that is interesting is the number of ships and the fact that the drill will concentrate on complex operations such as “amphibious warfare, land maneuver warfare, diving operations, maritime interdiction operations, air defense, special operations integration, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue operations.”

Naval joint drills are increasingly important. Israel hosted Noble Dina, a naval drill, back in March. France and Cyprus joined Israel and Greece for the first time. Egypt and Greece have been working more closely together in recent years and the UAE has begun to play a greater role in the Eastern Mediterranean via close work with Greece. Israel and the UAE also participated in the Greek-led Iniochos drill in April. Israel, Italy, the UK and US also trained with F-35s in Italy earlier this month in a drill called Falcon Strike.

According to Reuters, Russia has warned the US and UK not to “tempt fate” in the Black Sea. The Black Sea is only one place where there are naval tensions. Last year Turkey threatened Greece repeatedly and the country’s came close to possible conflict. The US has expressed support for Greece and Cyprus. However, maritime issues matter because Israel, Greece and Cyprus want to construct an East Med pipeline and they are part of a gas forum with Egypt. In addition. Israel has received two new Sa’ar 6 advanced corvette warships in the last year. This is important for Israel’s naval footprint and the wider region.

Last week British and American F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters flew anti-ISIS strike missions from the UK Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), according to USNI news. It was “a first for the U.K. in a decade, defense officials confirmed to USNI News on Tuesday.” According to the report the F-35s from the Royal Air Force were from the 617 Squadron, “The Dambusters” and they flew anti-ISIS operations. “The involvement of HMS Queen Elizabeth and her air wing in this campaign also sends a wider message. It demonstrates the speed and agility with which a U.K.-led Carrier Strike Group can inject fifth generation combat power into any operation, anywhere in the world, thereby offering the British government, and our allies, true military and political choice,” Commodore Steve Moorhouse, commander of the U.K. Carrier Strike Group, said in a statement.

The Queen Elizabeth Carrier Strike Group left the UK on may 22 and is in the Mediterranean Sea, heading eventually to the Indo-Pacific region. “The [ship] escorts from the Royal Navy include Type 45 destroyers HMS Defender and HMS Diamond, Type 23 anti-submarine frigates HMS Kent and HMS Richmond, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s RFA Fort Victoria and RFA Tidespring, and an unspecified Astute-class nuclear attack boat. The group also includes Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen (F805) and U.S. Navy destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG-68),” USNI reports. It was HMS Defender that ran into tensions with Russia last week. Russian jets and ships have shadowed the British ship. Russia is now doing drills in the Mediterranean. Russia says it does not rule out a “tough response” to the UK. This sets the stage for a week or more of tensions.

Classified UK defence ministry documents found at bus stop

Britain’s government is investigating how secret defence documents, outlining the movements of a warship that led to Russia firing warning shots off the Crimean coast, were found at a bus stop in England.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Sunday that an employee reported lost documents last week and that an investigation had been launched.

Russia says warning shots fired at British destroyer in Black SeaPutin accuses US of orchestrating 2014 ‘coup’ in UkraineUK to give EU citizens 28 days to apply for settled status
“It shouldn’t be able to happen,” Brandon Lewis, minister for Northern Ireland, told Sky News. “It was properly reported at the time … there’s an internal investigation into that situation.”
A member of the public, who wanted to remain anonymous, contacted the BBC after finding 50 pages of classified information in a soggy heap behind a bus stop in Kent early on Tuesday.

The papers included one set of documents that discussed the potential Russian reaction to HMS Defender’s travel through Ukrainian waters off the Crimea coast on Wednesday, according to the BBC, while another laid out plans for a possible British military presence in Afghanistan.

The MoD said that HMS Defender “conducted innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters in accordance with international law” and that “all potential factors” are considered when making “operational decisions”.
The HMS Defender is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group currently heading to the Indo-Pacific region.
However, it was announced earlier this month that it would be temporarily breaking away from the group to carry out its “own set of missions” in the Black Sea.

The Type 45 destroyer caused a clash with Russian forces on Wednesday when it travelled through waters south of the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia unofficially annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Moscow responded by having several aircraft shadowing the ship at varying heights, the lowest being approximately 500 feet (152 metres).

Ukraine, NATO launch joint Black Sea drills
YURAS KARMANAU Associated Press

Ukraine and NATO are launching drills in the Black Sea that will involve dozens of warships
KYIV, Ukraine -- Ukraine and NATO on Monday launched Black Sea drills that will involve dozens of warships, an exercise that follows last week's incident with a British destroyer off Crimea.
Moscow said one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of British destroyer Defender on Wednesday to force her out of an area near the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
Britain denied that account, insisted its ship wasn’t fired upon and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.
The Sea Breeze 2021 maneuvers that began Monday and will last for two weeks are set to involve about 30 warships and 40 aircraft from U.S. and its NATO allies and Ukraine. U.S. destroyer Ross has arrived in the Ukrainian port of Odessa for the drills.

U.S. Navy Capt. Kyle Gantt noted Monday that a large number of participants in the exercise reflects a shared commitment to ensuring free access to international waters.
Moscow has criticized the drills, and the Russian Defense Ministry said it would closely monitor them.
In Wednesday's incident, Britain insisted the Defender had been making a routine journey through an internationally recognized travel lane and remained in Ukrainian waters near Crimea. The U.K., like most of the world, recognizes Crimea as part of Ukraine despite the peninsula’s annexation by Russia.

Russia denounced the Defender’s move as a provocation and warned that next time it could fire to hit intruding warships if they again try to test Russian military resolve.

A sea painted NATO black

US seeks to revamp post-WWI concept of Baltic-Black Sea Intermarium as a Cold War 2.0 iron wall against Russia by Pepe Escobar June 28, 2021

Welcome to the latest NATO show: Sea Breeze starts today and goes all the way to July 23. The co-hosts are the US Sixth Fleet and the Ukrainian Navy. The main protagonist is Standing NATO Maritime Group 2.
The show, in NATOspeak, is just an innocent display of “strengthening deterrence and defense.” NATO spin tells us the exercise is “growing in popularity” and now features more than 30 nations “from six continents” deploying 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft and “18 special operations and dive teams.” All committed to implement and improve that magical NATO concept: “interoperability.”

Now let’s clear the fog and get to the heart of the matter. NATO is projecting the impression that it’s taking over selected stretches of the Black Sea in the name of “peace.” NATO’s supreme articles of faith, reiterated in its latest summit, are “Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea” and “support for Ukraine sovereignty.”
For NATO, Russia is an enemy of “peace.” Everything else is hybrid war fog.

NATO not only “does not and will not recognize Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea” but also denounces its “temporary occupation.” This script, redacted in Washington, is recited by Kyiv and virtually the whole EU.
NATO bills itself as committed to “transatlantic unity.” Geography tells us the Black Sea has not been annexed to the Atlantic. But that’s no impediment for NATO’s goodwill, which the record shows turned Libya, in northern Africa, into a wasteland run by militias.
As for the intersection of Central and South Asia, NATO’s collective behind was unceremoniously kicked by a bunch of ragged Pashtuns with counterfeit Kalashnikovs.

Meet the Bucharest 9
The White House defines its NATO eastern flank allies as the Bucharest 9.
The Bucharest 9 includes the members of the Visegrad Four (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia); the Baltic trio (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania); and two Black Sea neighbors (Bulgaria and Romania). No Ukraine – at least not yet.
Geopolitics_South_Russia2.png

Black Sea regional map by Spiridon Ion Cepleanu. Source: Wikimedia Commons

When the White House refers to “strengthening transatlantic relations” this means, above all, “closer cooperation with our nine Allies in Central Europe and the Baltic and Black Sea regions on the full range of challenges.” Translation: “full range of challenges” means Russia.
So welcome to the return, in style, of the Intermarium – as in “between the seas,” mostly the Baltic and Black, with the Adriatic as a sideshow.

After WWI, the drive for what would possibly become a geopolitical entente included the three Baltics, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Belarus and Ukraine. That concoction was made in Poland.
Now, under the US and its NATO weaponized arm, a revamped Baltic-Black Sea Intermarium is being pushed as the new Cold War 2.0 Iron Wall against Russia. That’s why the definitive incorporation of Ukraine to NATO is so important for Washington – as it would solidify the Intermarium for good.

007 does Monty Python
Last week, the prequel to Sea Breeze took place via a farcical Britannia Rules the Waves stunt, enacted like a Monty Python sketch – yet with potentially explosive overtones.
Imagine waiting at a bus stop somewhere in Kent and finding a soggy blob – nearly 50 pages – of secret documents in a trash bin detailing Ministry of Defense elaborations on the explicitly provocative deployment of the Defender destroyer off Sebastopol, along the Crimean coast.

Even a BBC journalist embedded with the destroyer smashed the official London spin that the ship’s deployment was a mere “innocent passage.” Moreover, the Defender’s weapons were fully loaded – as it advanced two nautical miles inside Russian waters. Moscow released a video documenting the stunt.
Image of Russian Black Sea Fleet and border patrol vessel’s alleged ‘prevention of the breach of the Russian state border committed by the UK Navy destroyer Defender on June 24, 2021.’ The Russian Defense Ministry said a border patrol vessel fired shots at HMS Defender after it entered the country’s territorial waters in the Black Sea. It also said that a Su-24M warplane dropped four bombs close to the ship. Britain dismisses Russian claims, saying that the 152 meter-long, 8,500-ton vessel was conducting innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters in accordance with international law.

In a statement posted on Twitter, it said: We believe the Russians were undertaking a gunnery exercise in the Black Sea and provided the maritime community with prior warning of their activity. No shots were directed at HMS Defender and we do not recognize the claim that bombs were dropped in her path. Photo: AFP / EyePress News
It gets better. The soggy blob found in Kent not only revealed discussions about the possible Russian reaction to the “innocent passage.” There were also digressions about the Brits, “encouraged” by the Americans, leaving commandos behind in Afghanistan after the troop pullout next 9/11.
That would qualify as extra evidence that the Anglo-American-NATO combo will not really “leave” Afghanistan.

A vague “member of the public” contacted the BBC when he innocently found the geopolitically radioactive materials. No one knows whether this was a leak, a trap or a silly mistake. If the “member of the public” were a true whistleblower he would have gone the Wikileaks way, not BBC.
The “innocent passage” happened only hours after London signed a deal with Kyiv for the “enhancement of Ukrainian naval capabilities.”
On the Russian reaction front, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova summed it all up: “London has demonstrated yet another provocative action followed by a bunch of lies to cover it up. 007 agents are not what they used to be.”

UK Ambassador to Russia Deborah Bronnert leaves Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters after she has been summoned on June 24 over an incident involving the HMS Defender destroyer in the Black Sea. Photo: AFP / Sefa Karacan / Anadolu Agency
Meanwhile, on the Mediterranean front, which NATO considers its Mare Nostrum, two Russian Mig-31k fighters – capable of carrying Khinzal hypersonic missiles – were redeployed last week to Syria. The Khinzal range encompasses the whole Mediterranean, east as well as east.

Across the Global South, NATO promoting “global peace” in the port of Odessa, in the Black Sea, is bound to evoke shades of Libya cum Afghanistan. Austin Powers – self-billed Agent Double Oh! Behave! – would fit perfectly in the Kent trash bin “secret documents” caper.

“Oh. Behave!” totally applies to Sea Breeze. Otherwise, the opportunity might arise to say hello to Mr Kinzhal.

Russia tests Crimean air defence systems as Ukraine, U.S. hold Black Sea drills
Reuters

3 minute read
MOSCOW, June 29 (Reuters) - Russia tested the readiness of its air defence systems in Crimea, the peninsula it annexed from Ukraine in 2014, as Ukraine and NATO countries held military drills in the Black Sea, the Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday.
The Sea Breeze exercise, which began on Monday, follows a rise in tensions between NATO and Moscow, which said last week it had fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the path of a British warship to chase it out of Black Sea waters off the coast of Crimea. read more
Russia's Black Sea fleet was cited by Interfax as saying it had deployed around 20 warplanes and helicopters, including Su-24M bombers, as well as S-400 and Pantsir surface-to-air missile systems in the readiness tests.
Moscow considers Crimea part of Russia, but the peninsula is internationally recognised as part of Ukraine which wants it back.

Defence: Russian fighter planes carried out feint attacks on Dutch frigate
christophercloutier60 mins ago
xxl.jpg

Last Thursday, Russian fighters performed mock falls on the Dutch naval vessel Zr.Ms. Evertsen in the Black Sea. The planes harassed the ship, which was sailing southeast of Crimea, for hours, the defense ministry said.

The Russians flew “dangerously low and close” over the ship and conducted feint attacks. The fighters were armed with bombs and air to surfacemissiles, which are intended to fire at a target from the air. The electronic equipment of the Dutch ship was also disrupted.

Harassment Practices

Defense speaks of “intimidation practices” and Minister Bijleveld will address Russia about “irresponsible” actions. “Sr. Ms. Evertsen has every right to sail there. There is no justification whatsoever for this kind of aggressive action, which also unnecessarily increases the risk of accidents.”
