Israeli Air Force Gears for Ultimate Test: Strikes in Iran

The IDF is holding intensive training for strike missions in Iran, as Tehran and Jerusalem edge closer to a direct clash. The Air Force reportedly held an exercise in Cyprus in recent days to simulate attacks on Iranian targets.
Earlier, a Western defense source told Saudi website Elaph that the IDF practiced strikes on sensitive Iranian sites. The renewed focus on Iran comes after months without training, as the Air Force dedicated all its energies and resources to operations in Gaza and elsewhere.
Tensions skyrocketed after a high-ranking Iranian officer was killed in an alleged Israeli strike on an Iranian embassy site in Damascus. Israel has made it clear that a direct revenge attack by Iran would trigger retaliation on Iran’s soil.
Israel and Iran are now closer than ever to a direct military conflict, veteran expert Raz Zimmt wrote in Ynet. Tehran is currently willing to take greater risks than before but still wishes to avoid a full-scale war, he estimated.

Israel upgrades F-35s

Notably, the Israeli Air Force has been preparing for years for strike missions in Iran. As part of this process, the IDF developed new capabilities and techniques, while building a large stockpile of munitions. [including expensive advanced armaments, according to a previous report]
Israel was boosting its readiness for a wide-ranging campaign that goes beyond a strike on Iran’s nuclear sites, a senior officer said back in 2021. The IDF will to aim to hit key Iranian assets and military resources in a future assault, he said. [Here’s the full report]
Among other steps, Israel significantly upgraded its F-35 jets for remote strike missions in Iran. Among other things, the stealth fighter jets were armed with bunker-busting bombs. [more details in this report]
F-16 jets will also be mobilized if the government orders the IDF to strike in Iran. Israel upgraded the long-serving aircraft over the years to maximize the IDF’s air power.

Attack on Iran’s nuclear sites?

Over the years, Israel achieved a higher level of readiness for a strike on Iran’s nuclear project. However, it remains unclear whether the IDF will aim to bomb Tehran’s nuclear sites as part of a broad military conflict.
In 2022, the Air Force held several exercises to test different components of its attack plans, Walla News reported. This included coping with Iran’s early detection systems and evading cyber and electronic warfare obstacles.
In a separate drill, F-35 and F-15 fighter jets practiced strike operations on multiple targets. The IDF also simulated a broad assault on Iran by mobilizing nearly 100 warplanes from bases in Israel.
In parallel, Israeli engineers achieved a major technological breakthrough, enabling the F-35 jets to fly to Iran and back without refueling, the report said. The stealth aircraft are expected to play a key role in a strike on the Iranian nuclear project by knocking out air defenses and executing other vital tasks.
The Air Force also developed a heavy bomb that can be carried in the F-35’s belly without harming its stealth mode, Walla said.

If that happens and assuming Iran has some fight left in it, and assuming they have saved some of their best hypersonic weapons left, then I would expect Dimona to get smacked as hard as Iran can smack it.

#BREAKING: Not all of #Iranian ballistic missiles have reached #Israel. Two crashed in #Iraq & one in #Jordan. One exploded on launch pad near #Tehran and another one exploded over #Kermanshah! The one exploded near Tehran has most likely killed some of the IRGC personnel as the explosion in Amir Al-Momenin missile base was extremely massive.

One hour ago:

The Air Defense System C-RAM has been activated at the Conoco military base in Deirezzor eastern Syria.

It’s not clear yet whether it’s a military exercises or targeting by the militias supported by the Khamenei regime and located west of the Euphrates River.

Me:

I believe that the militias tried to target the Conoco base with a suicide drone , but it was shot down by the C-RAM system.

I recall reading that only mild damage was sustained to 3 of the 5 bases, but I cannot find the documentation at the moment- and as we know what they say doesn't always equal truth so :: shrug ::

U.S. forces at #Iraq's Ain al-Asad airbase were targeted in an armed drone attack that caused no damage or casualties, a U.S. official said, in the second attack on US troops in the region in less than 24 hours. #IRGCterrorists are ramping it up again.

US forces in Iraq, Syria attacked twice in under 24 hours
Al Arabiya English

US forces in Iraq and Syria faced two separate rocket and explosive drone attacks in less than 24 hours, Iraqi security sources and US officials told Reuters on Monday, the first reported after a near three-month pause.

At least one armed drone was launched at the Ain al-Asad air base that hosts US troops in the western Iraqi province of Anbar, a US official said.

That followed five rockets fired from northern Iraq towards US forces at a base in Rumalyn in remote northeastern Syria, on Sunday, according to US and Iraqi officials.

There were no reports of casualties or significant damage from the drone attacks.

On Saturday, a massive explosion at a military base in Iraq killed a member of an Iraqi security force that includes Iran-backed groups.

The force commander said it was an attack while the army said it was investigating and that there were no warplanes in the sky at the time. The US military denied involvement.

Near-daily rocket and drone strikes on US forces began in mid-October and were claimed by a group of Iran-backed Shia Muslim armed groups known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, who cited US backing for Israel’s war in Gaza.

The attacks stopped in late January under pressure from Iraqi authorities and Iran, following deadly US retaliatory airstrikes in Iraq, after three US soldiers were killed in a drone strike on a small base on the Iraqi-Jordanian border.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned at the weekend from a week-long visit to the United States where he met President Joe Biden in an effort to turn a new page in US-Iraqi relations despite soaring regional tensions.

The US invaded Iraq in 2003 and toppled strongman leader Saddam Hussein, withdrawing in 2011 before returning in 2014 at the head of an international military coalition at the Baghdad government’s request to help fight ISIS insurgents.

The US has some 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in eastern Syria on an advise-and-assist mission.

Pentagon Press Secretary Patrick Ryder on Tuesday called on Iraq's gov't to take steps to safeguard American troops in both Iraq and Syria after failed attacks on Monday by Iran-aligned militia, warning that "if these attacks continue, we will not hesitate to defend our forces, as we have done in the past."

"These attacks put coalition and Iraqi personnel at risk. We call on the government of Iraq to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of US forces in Iraq and Syria against attacks from these groups."
