Greatful that DH works at tractor dealership and knows the farmers here...we have several we can get meat from and one we get all our eggs from...we are zoned ag and can keep our own beef, pork and chickens if push comes to shove.. we already do a big garden...we doubled it this year and will have extra for friends and some of the kids he works with who have little ones...if the good lord is willing..

Many years ago an old farmer taught me to plant one for the bugs, one for the weather and one for me....also if you are just starting to grow a garden. ..if it doesn't come up plant it again....many things can cause it not to come up..so just do it again..and don't think it is your fault.

With the price of meat skyrocketing, people need to start looking at the older recipes for casseroles, quiche, bean and rice dishes (with a bit of meat for seasoning) and the million other ways our ancestors knew to stretch the supply.

The days of slapping a big sirloin on the grill for each person are going to be mighty scarce, mand probably more for celebration type meals.

We have been getting some canned goods all along, amount seems to vary. We occasionally get some fresh foods, like oranges and potatoes. We use to get two boxed milks but have only been getting one for a while now. We've gotten butter in the past but its been awhile since that. We usually get a one pound bag of red beans, rarely anything else. And a one pound bag of rice, we use to get two pound bags of each. They use bulk things for filler, like boxed cereal (the goats like that). Last time we got two boxes of granola bars. DH eats some of that, I've changed what I eat so I no longer eat them. Most times we get a package of chicken, usually leg quarters, and on a rare occasion we get chicken legs. We are not big chicken eaters.

Bottom line is I'm greatful for what ever we get, even if its things we don't or won't eat. Your commodities sound alot better than what we get. I'm happy for you for what you get. You certainly make the most of it. God Bless.
Oh, I am SOOOO grateful for the help…

And yes, we are given some really good stuff.

I went to a mobile pantry event earlier today -second one I have hit this month. (We are allowed to hit more than one in a month.)

They actually gave us two bags of frozen catfish fillets - premium quality stuff.

We don’t normally get anything this good - chicken leg quarters or drumsticks are common, but we have even been given soy based fake meat on rare occasion.

But boy, do I love it when they give out the frozen catfish!

Currently $9 at Wal-Mart. These cans have a “best used by” date that is five years out. I personally find the quality/taste acceptable, though not brag-worthy.

Here is the question: What value do you think these cans might have in 2028?

A bunch of our members here are telling us what is coming down the pike. Thank you to all for the heads-up concerning beef.

Alexa, add Keystone Beef to the shopping list (though I personally don’t use that tech, I still like the sound of that sentence).
Where did the thread go that talked about farmers getting rid of their cattle because of feed prices???

I don't just read these threads.
I ACT IMMEDIATELY ON INFORMATION I LEARN
.
I JUST BOUGHT $1,500 worth of ( 10 cases) of canned Keystone meats from the Keystone company itself and 6 of the 4lb tubs of lard from Walmart for about $35.

You ALSO can't have enough shortening and fat and oils and butter (frozen) or ghee and coconut oil.
All forms of FAT- It is one of the first thing that disappears.
It is the most concentrated form of calories!

Yup. Cooking like my mom and grandma did. I am thankful every day for what they taught me about stretching a meal and making do, but still setting out a good meal 3x/day.

Nomifile,

I know you get senior commodoties.

Are you seeing more fresh food and less canned goods there?

I sometimes get commodoties via the Memphis Food Bank mobile pantry distribution service.

For awhile we were given very little or else no canned goods. Nor were we receiving long term storage items like pasta, rice, or beans. No milk, eggs or butter either.

What we were getting was fresh produce. Lots and lots of fresh produce. Carrots, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes (white and sweet potatoes), oranges, grapefruit, even strawberries. Triple helpings, it seemed to me, on the oranges, grapefruit, potatoes and carrots.

But in the last few weeks, that has suddenly changed.

Now we are getting canned goods again: canned black beans, Spaghetti-Os with beef, canned pasta sauce, canned potatoes, canned carrots, green beans, and succotash (diced carrots with green peas).

In addition, we have been given dry Navy Beans, white rice, and dried pasta.

I have wondered if they are purposefully distributing food storage prep type items to us right now, just in case things go badly in the next few weeks or months.
The food bank we help with passed out 1 whole frozen chicken, a lot of name brand cereal, a box of potatoes, apples, carrots, and sweet potatoes, the jerky that's plant based, and propel drinks. We had no canned goods to share this week.

I've found the 14.5 oz cans (case of 12) oz under $100.00. I think it was on Ebay, and the seller is Safe Castle - and free shipping. Ground beef and turkey. and, yes, seller is Safe Castle. (I just checked.)
Lately, I’ve been getting the 15 Oz cans from the Bishop’s Storehouse. I’ve been getting 8 cans every two weeks, trying to build up a stash. I love the canned beef. They also have the large tuna can-sized portions of chicken. I’m trying to stock up on those too. I’m so grateful for the Storehouse. So far, it’s probably saved me close to $600 in food cost.

The bi-monthly mobile pantry was last week. I'll list what we were given that I kept first 1# dates, 2 cans tuna, 1 peanut butter, 1 box fettuccine, 2 foil 4.5 oz. packages of chicken, 2# bag of shredded Cheddar, 5# chicken legs and 3# bag of oranges. The oranges are so green that I thought they were limes until I saw the label. The items I donated are 1 box fettuccine, bag of sweet potatoes, 2 boxes of mac & cheese, 2 packets of coconut squash dal, 1 can green beans and 1 can tomatoes. I have a LOT of pasta that I've been given in the past so passed that on, sweet potatoes I have from last season's harvest, dal and squash are on my list of foods I should not eat, and I have my own home canned tomatoes and green beans.

Fareway had pork chops (two varieties) on sale last week for $1.69 and 99¢ a pound so I bought a couple packages of each. It's reached the point that I do not even look at beef. Brownie mixes were also on sale for $1.48. I love the AE strawberry lemonade so purchased two half gallons @$1.88. Those were the only items on my list, and I only purchased those. I had to go to the courthouse to sign a document so did not make a special trip to shop just took advantage of being there.

I don't care what Biden says about inflation (or anything else!) being under control because I know prices are still going up. Lately I don't buy much beyond groceries and those are definitely going up drastically. I do have a long list for Walmart next time I go to town, so I'll see how much those prices have gone up.

There is an area wide grocery chain that I get a weekly flyer from. If they have one or two canned items its a lot. For the most part its all packaged processed foods. They do have some fresh foods and frozen veggies. But little that could be kept long term. And the prices over all are getting very high. The two containers of coconut oil that was 9.99 for a long time is now 13.99. I've only got a few dollars left until my next for groceries and adding those to the list will have to wait until next check. I'm making every effort to pull as much cash from each check that I can. I don't actually need anything for now.

After I sell eggs to my regular customers, I donate the rest to the local Food bank.
They are ever so grateful for eggs and thank me profusely.
To make them go further, I package them in half cartons, so more people can get some.
They have more people who come for help there, than both I and my sister can supply with eggs, but we do our best.

We have been buying the Sams $5 chicken for the same reason. We save a lot. It helps stretch meals

I was in a small chain grocery here on the Big Island of Hawaii . I just needed a couple of things but took some time to look around. Salsa was $7.98. That was the small Taco Bell size. Cheapest candy bar was almost $2. I used to love their oatmeal/raisin cookies but they are now $9.69 for 8 cookies. This is the only grocery in a small town of about 1500 people. I drive 15 more miles the prices are half what this store charges.
COSTCO is a lifesaver here but it is 75 miles away and gas is over $5 a gallon. I go once a month and stock up.

Too many sales, not enough storage space.

Eggs are 18 for $2.07. Plenty of 5 pound bags of chicken drumsticks for $2. 8 pounds of 75/25 ground beef patties, 32 count of 1/4 pounders for $10 (another WalMart had them at $27!). Russet potatoes $1.50 for 5 pounds. Watermelon (about 8 to 10 pounds) for $4.

Most beef, fish, and pre-made frozen foods are going through the roof. I'm not currently buying any of that stuff, so I didn't record the prices. Generally these items are about $4.50 to $9 a pound, although portions are usually well under a pound to make them look less costly.

Pasta and rice are still inexpensive, but prices are up 50% to 100% in the past year.

Just got my Keystone meats order Today at 2 pm took me till
7:30 pm to get it into the house with a big dolly.(10 cases) 5 cases of the big cans, 5 cases of the 24 smaller cans of meat each case felt like 40lbs. I already had a lot of spam and 1 lb canned hams, tuna, and home canned chicken but I had virtually no beef, no ground beef, or turkey, or pork. I think i still need more beef, 24cans per case of the 14oz? ground beef, and also the small cans 24 to a case beef chunks.
I got 4 of the 4lb. Tubs of lard too , from walmart for $5ea.

I am not as heathy as i thought i was. I was shocked to have to rest for 30 min. after each trip into the house. Heart didnt like it. Two canes while pushing a dolly is a real struggle.

PS: i KNOW I am not gonna live long enuff to eat much. If practically any of this. But the money gets more worthless daily,
and so many people around me are clueless, to the approaching very difficult times, so my family and neighbors will get it.

I am done buying anything but long term storage food except
for fresh daily food ie. Bread, milk, and eggs and fresh produce.

Don't worry about not having beef, turkey or pork. With Spam, you've got your mechanically separated mystery meat.

Bought eggs for the first time in months yesterday. Was surprised to see it was $3.79 for 18 count store brand eggs. That's only $1.40 than pre-scamdemic prices.
I bought a dozen for $1.19 the other day and was surprised to see that price. I didn’t really need them as I had just gotten three dozen eggs from a friend ($10.00).
For that price though, my plan of chicken salad for lunch over the next few days turned to egg salad instead.

Was at Hyvee last night. Rotisserie chickens are now $9.99 each there. So I asked IC to go to sams club to get me one that’s still $4.99

Mercy I remember when a whole bird was .29 a pound!
I hear that rotisserie chickens are running close a pound less than previously. Processing them earlier saves on feed, and they still cost the same to the consumer.

Will Cornish game hens replace the current rotisserie chickens?

I “think” egg prices just might be coming down. Let’s keep fingers crossed!

Remember, it was Tyson and the banks that caused Pilgram's Pride to go bankrupt by leveraging the price of marketed chicken against the cost of chicken feed. PP was the country's largest chicken producer; its bankruptcy was the country's largest as well. Perhaps the slang definition of 'chicken feed' needs revision.

I bought a rotisserie chicken yesterday, it was 6.97 and very small. I ate the legs and the bones were so small.

I salute you dear lady for being as independent are you possible can. You and Martinhouse are an inspiration to this older woman.

Thanks, I needed that, the way millwrght and Dennis have been treating me lately, even when it hurts the membership, by closing the multiple sclerosis thread even when I gave a summary in the title..
