In splitting a can, you're each getting an average of maybe 80 calories from those different light soups. The calories per dollar comes at an astronomical price. For preppers, one would need an enormous amount of space to house enough calories, protein, etc...for say several months or more.

On the plus side, Progresso is more palatable than Campbell's, but still well short of homemade.

Sorry, that's a lunch for us. We have a big breakfast (homegrown eggs, potatoes, and DH has bacon). From the can of soup, I usually just take some of the carrots and a good amount of the broth, to which I add half an avocado and a cracker or two. DH takes the bulk of the chicken, pasta, and vegetables.

Agree, there's nothing better than homemade, but when we're under the weather or need a quick lunch in winter this works well for us.

Totally understand this wouldn't work for a lot of people. We're both pretty light eaters now that we're in our upper 60s.

We just got back from German Week at our local Aldi's! I made a big haul, since I don't know if most of what I bought will be available all the time, or just this week. I would have bought more, but forgot our cooler, so I couldn't buy anything that had to be kept cold or frozen. I went specifically for the imported German food items. All shelf stable, and a great addition to my pantry. Prices weren't too bad, either. The German dark chocolate-almond candy bars and the dark pumpernickel breads, alone, made the trip worth it. The pumpernickel bread is a favorite of Cary's. $2.49 per loaf.

I can't remember who told us about German Week but Thank You!

Did your store have the jars of pickled red cabbage and apples? Mine didn't yesterday.

Hmm, I went to the city Target and was STUNNED at the price increases. It is like they waited all summer an then KABOOM.

1) Applegate meats from $5 to $7
2) Welches Grape Juice up to over $ 6 from $4.79
3) 2.5 oz snack chip from $1.89 to $2.29.

Safeway had 2 liter soda pop up to $2.39 with deposit.
And the list goes on: sprouted wheat bread nearly $7 with all the bread up.
Fortunately, I can cut back or cut out must of this stuff. I bought a 10 pack of 5 oz Tuna for $12 today. Now that fall is here the 30% price hikes are no longer hidden.
My FAVORITE apple juice Martenellis? just went from a 1.5 liter bottle to only 1 liter size. The price stayed at $6 or so, plus they made the glass thinner wbich may impact the taste. I bought about 15 of the old style larger and cheaper over the summer so I am good. If you can find the old style snap them up.
I'm conviced we will have a 50% total price hike by Christmas compared to July 4th. After that, TOTAL INFLATION CHAOS

I love wings. But about 30 wings and a couple of sides at the local famous wing spot is about $70. And they are local, not national franchise. We don't do it often.

Okay, today was the bi-monthly mobile food pantry. Here's what we received: 3# of sweet potatoes (which I gave away since I just harvested from my garden); 6 plums (very good); 1# dates, 1 18 oz. peanut butter; 1 can each diced pears, fruit cocktail and peas; 1# rice; 48 oz. vegetable oil; 2 boxes mac & cheese; 1# macaroni; 14 oz. baking mix; 1 packet rice sides (500 mg. sodium so gave away); 2 packages of small boxes (12) of raisins (gave away); 3 packages of the same string cheese that we were given in July with a July 2022 sell by date (kept as it's still okay); 2 1# containers of Hummas which had a use by date of 7/22 (trashed). Was it worth a 30 mile round trip and hour wait? I'm not sure!!

Stopped at Fareway and purchased 18-count of eggs for $2.88 while a dozen eggs were only a few cents less. A large part of my protein comes from eggs so a good buy. Also purchased on sale 24 pack of Pepsi for $8.88 which is my luxury item and is quickly becoming too luxurious for my budget. I needed two large onions and two large red peppers to make my chili sauce and although not cheap were good quality.

I noticed Fareway has very reduced shelf space for flour and sugar the same as at HyVee. This makes me wonder about the supply of those two essentials down the road. Aldi sometimes has none and other times pallets full.

Thank you for a HUGE reminder.

When I get something like the flu, I'm basically too weak to do any cooking. And, I generally cannot stomach any solid food for at least two days. So, NOW is the time for making a large batch of chicken soup and freezing it. Some of it will be broth only. About a gallon, or more, of the chicken broth gets consumed before I feel like eating solid food.

Finally got to get to go to Wegmans today after almost 3 weeks. Bought a lot of stuff, came to $126.31. Not bad, considering it should last me 2 more weeks, although I'll do my food link truck tomorrow for a few things (fruits, veggies).

I can stretch those Wegman dollars, trust me.

ANYWAY, for those of you near them, today my son and I got the last two of these new donuts --- they were outrageous!!

Apple Pie Filling donuts coated with powdered sugar. We came home and snarfed them right up with a cup of coffee. Bliss.

Sam's Club Sioux City, IA yesterday. Zero canola oil, not even a shelf tag. Replaced with white vinegar. Store brand TP increased in price from $18-something to $20+.

Aldi's, same town: Fewer holes than previous trips but seems to be mostly because of seasonal items filling the gaps. Eggs were $2.22/dozen. Still no canned corned beef through the shelf tag remains, and we saw it this past week-end at the NE 14th street store in Des Moines. No small boxes of raisins, which are an essential item for my wife's Special Ed charge she does 1:1 with most days (float Sub other days). Zero low carb bread products. Once again, even the shelf tags had been removed.

W-M, same day: zero rutabaga, again not even a shelf tag. Keystone Meats are down to large cans of chicken and ground beef. No more chunk beef, which they have carried for the past 6 years (but no ground beef for 3 years or so). Alas, they haven't even filled the ground beef hole since changing the shelf tag. Turkey and pork long gone from this store, corned beef hash long gone and no small cans of anything by Keystone. Serious shifting around of shelves and products overall. Canned meats are in the candy aisle - seriously.

Just a few months ago, Kroger was selling 12-packs of Coke or Pepsi products at $4.99 or 3 for $12.00. When they went to $5.99, my wife said no more, she'd get store brand. But sometimes they were out of diet, caffeine-free when I shopped mid-week, so I would get Coke. She frowned but understood. Now she has forbidden me to continue buying them, as they have gone to $7.99. Up 60%.

A bag of Doritos that was $2.99 is now $5.59. Up 87%.

Creepy Joe and his minions can squawk about 8.3% inflation and "going down" but I ain't buying it.

Same at our Kroger. Indiana, north of Indy.

It was so hmbad when I went Sunday it darn near put me in a panic!

Lots of piles of meat, but no one buying.

Even the “sales” aren’t really sales anymore.

I’m at work will post more later if I can remember sone prices.

Kroger has been out of raisins except their organic ones for three weeks now.

Our Aldi's, yesterday, was fully stocked. I saw no shortages anywhere, but was disappointed they didn't have their pickled red cabbage. It's been quite a while, since I've gone into Aldi's, I don't know if their prices were higher than normal, or not.

I do dread to see what the price increase is going to be the next time I go to Walmart. I'm having to buy less and less.

Perfect segue into what the local H‑E‑B stores are doing. I’ll use a couple examples, but it’s all over the store. They used to have their fruit juices and canned soups all together (though in different aisles). A few months ago they “renovated” their aisles. Now juices are spread way apart, with apple in one section, grape in another, and orange in a third. Same with soups. Used to be the small cans of condensed soups were right next to the big cans of “chunky” soups, which were right next to the Progresso. All that has now been dispersed along 75’ of shelving, with unrelated crap in-between. It’s now nearly impossible to shop for anything because of that. But it sure makes the empty spaces smaller.

And prices are obscene. 20 packs of plastic utensils (which I use almost exclusively) went from $1/pack to $1.50. Munchos potato chip puffs (which I hadn’t seen for months) went from “still only $2” (printed on the bag) to “still only $2.49”. Munchos were always my favorite because they were so light and not greasy.

I did not see any shortages a week ago when I went to an Aldi’s in suburban Memphis.

They had both German sauerkraut and pickled red cabbage, but I did not buy either.

They even had about 12 flats of fried canned Apples and a bunch of bottles of apple cider when I went in - though I kindly took two of those flats of canned apples off their hands before I left…

Neither of us like canned fried apples nor apple cider, so I passed on both of those. Homemade fried apples are ok, but not one of our favorites.

I've got a doctor's appt. next Thursday in big town, and I plan to stop in there again to see if they have any German foods left. I'll remember to carry our cooler next time. I saw a strawberry and cream torte that looked delicious, but no way to keep it cold, until we got home. I saw plenty of other authentic German foods, too, that needed to be kept frozen or cold that I won't have to pass up next time if they still have it all.

I have quit soda and taken up iced tea. Also researching new and different beans and rice recipes.
Buying dried pinto beans on Amazon four pounds for less than $4 . I crockpot the beans and then freeze them in small portions. Youtube has lots of beans n rice recipes.

I came out my mother’s womb knowing how to cook dry beans (especially red beans)…

I had relatives in New Orleans that gave us the most awesome andouille, some 20-30 years ago. Have never found it since.

And while on a business trip around 1987, I had and fell in love with RBnR. I "settle" for Zatarain's but doctor it a good bit, 'cuz they should call it "rice and red beans". Have to add a least a can of red beans.

I lucked into a big score at WalMart yesterday, as I almost never shop on Fridays.

They had a huge amount of boneless skinless chicken breast reduced for quick sale, the expiration date, that day. I guessed right, and barely squeezed 25+ pounds into the freezer. At $1.39/lb, I saved almost $50 (although I never would have bought it at the original price). I'm still about 10 days away from delivery on the new fridge/freezer. If I had that, now, I likely would have bought another 25 pounds.

ETA: the andouille that my cousin gave us was a dried sausage product. I suspect it may have come from Jacob's, as that wasn't far from where she lived. So, I just ordered a bunch to try. Yummm...
