Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Just was going to mention that Fleet Farm (N MN) had canning lids aplenty in stock this morning. Kerr brand lids, jars, rings...looked like a complete display. No limits.

I didn't check in depth because I just grabbed a few more boxes of regular lids at $2.79/box. God knows I have enough jars and rings to can for the whole county, but there were cases of wide and regular quarts and pints stacked pretty deep.
I fell over laughing when I saw your "fleet" being mentioned AFTER the previous post of ANOTHER kind of FLEET!

Sorry, but it's good to laugh!

In central georgia my casserole favorite, (tomato soup) has doubled in price or is not in stack. When did tomato soup get to be more expensive than cream of mushroom or chicken noodle. If you see tomato soup on the shelves at a reasonable price buy it.

Time to improvise. A 6 oz can of tomato paste, water (I'm not buying that), and whatever herbs, spices, and other ingredients that you like would turn out to be better than canned tomato soup.

I picked up 50+ 6 oz cans at WalMart back in the spring for .42 cents each. I knew the price had to go up, because the 12 oz cans were .96 cents at the time. I think the 6 oz cans are now about .76 cents.

When the tomato shortage became a thing. Was listening to Simon Conway yesterday, 1040AM Des Moines IA, and he said that something like 75% of all commercial tomatoes are raised in California and that that area is in extreme drought conditions at the moment. Tomato crop is going to be horrid this year.

Just a quick note - friend of a family member had a routine dental cleaning/check-up appt yesterday. He said when he got his little bag from the dentist that usually has a new toothbrush, tiny tube of toothpaste, and tiny pk of dental floss, staff apologized and told him there wasn't a small sample pack of dental floss this time.

He was told the office can only get enough dental floss for their use in the office. Due to a shortage of dental floss, they couldn't get any of the small sample packs for giving out to patients.

We went to Costco early this week and they had plenty in stock, but we didn't check the grocery stores for any. Might be a good idea to check your supply at home and add it to your shopping list if you're low on stock.

Thank you! I have made them before, and I will do it again. At this point, I'm seriously thinking about raising 50 Cornish cross for the freezer this fall.

I LOVE chicken nuggets, but my back side is wider than it should be so I've taken to making my own in the air fryer! Much healthier. Lots of recipes for the air fryer on YouTube as well, just watched one for cooking a whole young chicken in the air fryer, might have to try that one on Labor Day.

Last evening I placed a pick up order for walmart. Pick up this morning. I get up to emails about substitutions, fine gave me other for the same price. And then look at my total and it was several dollars higher than when I placed my order. Instant grits for 3.48 went up to 5.68 and several other things went up also. I cancelled the order. There was nothing I really needed anyway, just adding a little to preps. Now the grits I wanted for convience, those little packets of super refined grits are handy. No matter I have regular grits that have not been so refined and if there is any nutrition in them then good. So much for a walmart pick up order for now and in the future. They raise the prices before you get it picked up. A pox on them.

I just watched a "boots on the ground" type video from a different guy other than SouthernPrepper1. He said all of those big stores do their prices changes at midnight (or early morning). So you go to bed with your order in, and then at midnight any/all prices change (usually up). The only way really around that is to place your order super early in the morning, and try for "same day" pickup/delivery. But unfortunately most people are discovering this work-around and those spots fill up FAST.

Semi and three trailers worth of meat stolen from Iowa pork processing plant

Police in Ottumwa, Iowa, are asking for tips from the public after a truck and a large amount of pork product were stolen from a plant this week.

Police were notified of the theft of semi trailers around 7 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, according to Lt. Jason Bell with the Ottumwa Police Department.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a semi truck was stolen from the area of the JBS Pork facility. That semi truck is believed to have been used to steal three trailers loaded with pork products ready for distribution.

The semi truck and all of the trailers were later recovered by police.

Bell said that two of the trailers were found at the Blackhawk River Access in Ottumwa. The truck and one trailer were found in Wapello County near the intersection of 87th Street and 170th Avenue.

All of the pork product had been removed from the trailers.

The estimated value of the stolen pork is more than $100,000.

“Anybody that would have observed any suspicious activity involving semis and semi-trailers, during the early morning hours of September 1st, are encouraged to contact the Ottumwa Police Department at 641-683-0661,” Bell requested in a news release.

Saved, to glorify God.
A couple of years ago i noticed the dental floss makers were RADICALLY cutting down on how much dental floss they sold in the package! Since I was considering it as emergency FISHING LINE i searched for the most floss in a package And found ONE COMPANY that was still packaging hundreds of feet of floss instead of a few yards and i bought a dozen packs of it.

At least one McDonalds near us is no longer offering the 4 for $4, or even 4 for $5. What the did have though was get one BOGO for all the items in the 4 for 4. So instead of getting 2 four for fours for 8.80 the total for two was just under $12. Oh and the small drink was tiny, a child's size drink. Still not bad what with everything going through the roof.

I went to WalMart yesterday, as I had to pick up some milk for someone. I haven't bought milk for more than a decade. I was completely shocked, as it was only $1.43 a gallon. Is that normal, or some sort of sale? I was expecting to pay about $4 to $5 for a gallon.

Prelude:
We've been making salsa and today Daughter picks up a big jug of Pace I had in the pantry and announces "This was a waste of six bucks". I told her to add it to the preps in the other pantry. She comes back and says "Da'ad, you got XX cans of spam in there". I says "yea, that's about a month, need to get some more". She says "you aint never gonna eat that."

The heart of the story:
We went to our local "Diner".
The great and powerful she orders "Buffalo Chicken Sandwich".
Waitress says "We don't have it - the chicken".'
And then she stops and says "It will be easier if I tell you what we don't have. Potatoes (mashed potatoes/home fries), buffalo chicken, tortillas for wraps, etc., etc., etc." Probably 1/3 of the menu. Supplier is not delivering.

Waitress leaves and I looked at daughter and said "that's why I have XX cans of spam"

I work in a small town c-store, and we just got word from our distributor today that Dr Pepper is now a nationwide shortage and not to expect any in the forseeable future. We are currently out of that soda and have not gotten any for the past two weeks. Customers are not happy.

That is going to cause problems. Not the first I've heard that this summer.

Stuck in Minneapolis area for four days, went to "Cubs" to check it out. High end white privilege grocer and prices are double WinCo. Also went to a national chain sporting goods store.

Well, there were so many Nordic blondes, tall, leggy young ladies and the soup prices were double...
Went back the next day for more shopping and most of those blondes were dressed for summer and bare midriffs and...what was this thread about again?

There are worse even than Cub down there. Twin Cities has a pretty lofty cost-of-living compared to outstate, and even outstate, I never go to Cub. They have all the oddball obscure stuff the gourmets look for, but I am well past needing that sort of thing these days. The place wouldn't be bad if you just shopped the weekly ads, but most people don't.

And yeah..the Scandaheuvian/German bloodlines are still real strong up here on the tundra. :)

I've had Walmart sub in my favor a number of times. The funniest one: I needed to order an enema for dh. It was cheaper to buy a generic six-pack than one name brand. For the same price they subbed six two-packs of Fleet! Needed one, got twelve...LOL! I guess we're set for the apocalypse now, for sure. :)
I had a funny one the other day. Was going to a baby shower for a baby girl. Ordered a big box of diapers, some wipes and wanted a couple little cute girl things to add. Chose a 3 back of bibs with pink designs and a 3 pack of burp clothes with very pink designs. they subbed blue versions for both. I figured it was probably a teen boy who did the picking

Yep. The Walmart online shopping/curbside pickup is good for avoiding impulse buys.
I'm surprised they are continuing it for that very reason. Sams and Costco? Half their danged sales must be impulse.
Probably if no other grocer had followed their lead, they wouldn't be offering store pickup anymore. But at this point, everyone is doing it and they would lose bigly if they cut the program. It's now ingrained. Can't even imagine what it took to set that up in the beginning.

Went to the local Food Lion this morning. They just started the pick up full force complete with app and designated pick up parking.

Shelves had more bare spots than the past two months. Hard to tell if not looking. Instead of three different products there were 3-4 rows of same product. Noticed it more in the freezer section, one or two packages in 3 rows. Meat was up in price again, almost no hamburger.

Our local Sam's has started adding a $4 charge to the curbside pickup routine.

I can imagine what it took.

It took the majority of shelf stockers being moved to become the new pickers. Thus, there are pallets and pallets of products sitting in the aisles, here, instead of getting onto the shelves.

I live in a college town, so perhaps now the local WalMart has hired more people to stock shelves. And, since I almost never see anyone stocking in the middle of the day, with the exception of meat/deli/frozen/fruit/veggie items, perhaps they've added an overnight crew for some of the non-perishables, like they do with the cleaning crew.

Not sure where you live but in south ga, Foodlions natures promise chicken leg quarters are about 1.80/lb and its good chicken.

I went shopping at Walmart, yesterday. I needed potatoes, so I bought 15 lbs. A 10lb bag and a 5lb bag. Every time I buy the bags of potatoes at Walmart, the potatoes inside the bags are sopping wet. I think that's why I can't keep them from rotting quickly, once I get them home. Does anyone else have a problem with wet potatoes from Walmart. Does anyone know why they are always wet?

Also, I was talking with Mom this morning. She told me that one of my cousins had gone to Walmart, yesterday. She bought a 5lb sack of cornmeal and flour. She didn't say which brand. When my cousin got home, she emptied each sack into containers. Both sacks already had bugs in them. So, beware.

The steak & Shakes still have the under $4 offerings. It’s basically a sandwich and small fries. Drink separate

They are good about not adding salt to the burger and fries when ordered that way. We seldom have any fast food but occasionally when we have to go for dr appointments in the Cindy on our far NW AO we do stop there on way home

The store potatoes around my AO are still mostly 2.5 lb bags. Few 5 lb and any 10 lb bags look bad.

Lots of green potatoes in the large bag which means you loose most of the potatoes to having to peel so deep

Our local IGA continues to have good 2.5 and 5 lb bags of red, gold and russets in quality and being in stock

AO - east central ill-state

The potatoes in the bags look good, just wet. I inspect every bag I buy to make sure they all look good. BUT, when I peel them, they have small black spots all throughout the potato. Some are even hollow and rotten in the middle. I think it's because they lay in those bags in the store all soppy wet for who knows how long. It's only the russet potatoes that are wet.

From what I've read, wet potatoes are ones that are harvested in hot weather, and they "perspire".

Often, I'll have a recipe for exactly 5 lbs of potatoes. So, I'll buy a 5 lb bag, and use them that day or the next, and don't worry about what's in the bag.

When I'll be storing much of a bag, I'll look them all over, drying any wet ones, using any blemished ones, and storing the best looking ones. I do try to move around a few of the potatoes in a bag before buying, looking for and rejecting a bag with wet ones and heavily blemished ones. At home, if not dried, they can quickly get moldy.
