I read somewhere that buckets are getting hard to find. A good two years ago I stocked up on Argee buckets from walmart. A 10 pack was under $40. Now a 10 pack is $73.89, and that's not counting the lids. The lids are now 32.01. Thats about 8 dollars more that what I paid for then. I really like these lids, they fit nice and tight and can be removed without difficulty or messing up the lid. At that time I bought 5, 3 1/2 and 2 gallon buckets and lids. Several cases of each. I have some still in the boxes. I still have food to put in a few too.

I still do better with Walmart delivery. No impulse buying and when/if they screw up I receive a promo code good towards my next order. Also...so many times when I received a substitution, it was WAY in my favor. Example... I ordered a 4 pack of sausage/egg breakfast sandwich. They gave me the 8 pack for the price of my 4 pack!

They also have the choice of doing a prepaid delivery fee for the year. Kinda like a Amazon Prime kinda thing. I am seriously looking at that option. I first looked into Walmart delivery during my last hip replacement. It has been a God-send.
Every time I order from Walmart or Kroger I get extra stuff and a lot of my items are upgraded either in brands or size. I'm very happy with it so far.

Barry... I realize that some people are up against the wall today with all this insane inflation..this is not the fault of of these good people...but the fault of our "wonderful" leaders... I not longer have a clicker...but I remember and always will how hard times were and how we had no choice but to watch every penny..and now those days are back with a vengeance....
Many are now in the same place today I was back then....I would do things a little differently...I hate self checkout because it is stealing jobs from people who need them....I don't use them but I assume that as you ring each item it will give you a running total of the amount you have rung up.....so if you ring your items in order of importantance...when you reach the amount you have to spend just stop..total your order and pay...

leave the rest in the cart and tell their attendant..they didn't have the shelf prices correct so you will not be purchasing the items remaining in your cart....and they will need to re-shop these items....put it right back on them.. don't let it bother you ..the bonus is they will have to pay someone to put the items back on the shelf ..so I doubt the save any if enough people pull this it will cost them just as to re-shop stuff as change prices..
Good idea.

And yes, I remember the horrible inflation of the 1970s.

Thankfully, eggs and pop it yourself popcorn were inexpensive back then. Because I was supporting myself while going to school, and there were whole weeks that the only thing I ate was eggs and popcorn, except on Sunday. A local church family always invited me to lunch between church sessions, and they served really nice, Sunday type dinners. Most often cold ham, cole slaw and potato salad, as those things could be served without violating the commandment to rest and honor God on the sabbath.

That was some of the best dinners I have eaten in my entire life!

Went to Kona Costco yesterday . Bagged salads were $8.99 , muffins that used to be 12 for 6.99 were 12 for $8.99. Dates on some products were almost expired. Coffee was all up about $4 a bag. I only bought things on sale . The time for prepping is about over. There were 30% fewer people there than what is usual for an afternoon. The food court now only has hot dogs and pizza and ice cream and soda.

We're finally getting a Costco in Ankeny, Iowa, it's supposed to open up next month. Nearest one is about an hour away assuming light traffic, no construction, and no accidents, so haven't been to one. Next I'm hoping Ankeny will get a Trader Joe's!

Well @#$%&, the Taste of the Wild cat food we’ve been buying for years just went up a whopping 25%. One month ago a 14 pound bag was $30. Went to order more today and it’s frickin $40! That’s nearly three bux a pound. For cat food! Granted, it’s quality cat food, but still. FJB!!!

they are upgraded due to the store being out of the cheaper kind, but you are NOT GETTING THEM AT THE LOWER PRICE, CHECK YOUR RECEIPT,.

That is not true everywhere @ainitfunny because it happens at the HEB that I get curbside from, and they do give the higher priced item at the agreed to lower price. I have checked my receipt several times when it happened. It may be true for you, but it is not true for all.

I always check my receipts, and yes, I do get them at the cheaper price. I have NEVER been charged a higher price. It's really the only way I can shop, so I will continue to do so even if I did pay a bit more. It's worth it to us.

Every time Walmart substitutes something on my order for a larger size or better brand I am never charged the higher price. They give it to me for the price of the original item I chose. Seems to be the case for a lot of people here too ‍

Yup. They sub with higher quality/larger package/higher price for the original money agreed upon. It's their mistake if they claim to have something, and they don't when they pick your order. That's one reason I continue with Walmart curbside.

HyVee does the same thing, not sure about Fareway.

Saved, to glorify God.
Well, it looks like I was wrong about the higher price substitutions, I was burned many years ago by a store that charged what the replacement cost , so I thought they ALL followed that practice and I consequently NEVER allow substitutions.
I am glad the grocers dont do that any more!

Thanks for the heads up.

The o'roy dog food that I feed my dog has gone up from 23 to 26 for 50#. All in all I guess its still not a bad price. Fortunately this is not her complete diet, we have lots of scraps.

Nom, out cat's food is $53 for a 15# bag but it's high quality and has all the nutrients they need.
no telling what our dog was raised on before someone threw her out and she found her way to our house. She's a great yard dog (refuses to come in the house) and was glad to get the olroy dog food. I've had many dogs through the years and they all at olroy and lived to a ripe old age. We never vaccinated them either. I'm sure other food would be better for her but its what we can do.

In the process of preparing my next online food order.

Recently got a Wild Fork order, with their typical speedy delivery. Everything was frozen rock hard. The packages of dry ice were still mostly unthawed. Their beef prices were steady, actually they do send out weekly specials. I can't afford high end steak cuts, although they look tasty.

I decided to order six different ground beef versions from them to figure out which one I like best.

The ground beef offerings differ on the lean/fat ratio and from what cut of beef. Some do not specify the cut.

So they vary from 80 percent lean to 93 percent.
Prices seem competitive with Walmart.

Also got a huge order of pasta, sauce, and pesto from Amazon. Had to wait a bit but Amazon did make good on all the items. I intend to repack and vacuum seal the pasta, so it lasts. I noticed that Amazon broke up the order and it came over several days and different cities.

Prices for pasta that used to be 99 cents a pound on sale are now $1.86. Still a cheap meal. But higher end Barilla tomato sauces made in Italy are out of stock.

What really shocked me was the price inflation on staples. What would have been a $300 order months ago is now a $400 order.

Will spend the afternoon checking prices and availability from Hy-Vee and Walmart. I like Hy-Vee produce better as Walmart's seem to turn bad much quicker.

ETA: the combined Hy-Vee and Walmart orders came up to $504!!!!

But also included a large stockpile of pasta and sauce which should last a long time. Still it's quite a lot of inflation priced in.

Going to get these orders next Saturday so hope they will still be in stock.

Still can't get frozen hash brown potatoes. Hit the canned vegetable aisle for a few cans of potatoes.
Got my cans ok, but I had to look, actually walked past them. The canned vegetable section is only about 1/3 of what it used to be not long ago. It was mostly store brand as well, didn't see any national brands other than beans.

Update: got the groceries today Monday instead of on next Saturday as earlier planned. Several items were out of stock but were substituted. Some items were just out of stock. Much "fronting" to make it look better.

Prices were higher than even from just a month ago.

If inflation is only 10 percent it must be per day, not year. I really think the exact same items would have been $200 cheaper a month ago.

The Hy-Vee store has drastically cut back on their pickup hours. Service now available only 3 days a week for only a 4 hour window. Found out that there is only ONE girl doing all the shopping and bringing out the items to the waiting cars. Long lines on the store with only a couple of check out counters.

If you need anything get it yesterday.

UPDATE #2

My order was originally for a dozen jars of Barilla tomato sauce but Hy-Vee only had 8 in stock.
That was yesterday.

When I double checked today the price went from $2.52 a jar to "on sale" at $3.99!

Now I know what living in 1923 Weimar Germany must have been like.
Jars of "tomato sauce"?

Wouldn't that be either cans of tomato sauce, or jars of pasta sauce?

My experience had to do with Great Value brand canned veggies vs brand name. They did SUB the brand name at the Walmart price. No increase. Another example is they were OUT of the 4 pack of a breakfast sandwich, they SUBBED the 8 pack at NO increase to me! I am a BIG fan of Walmart delivery.

I know it's a holiday weekend, but most folks here don't shop until Friday anyway. Aldi had NO chocolate ice cream. Had to make an unplanned stop at the local grocery. They only had 2 cartons. Theres was on sale. I dare not let dh run out of ice cream over the weekend, and no way I was making another trip to town.

I've had Walmart sub in my favor a number of times. The funniest one: I needed to order an enema for dh. It was cheaper to buy a generic six-pack than one name brand. For the same price they subbed six two-packs of Fleet! Needed one, got twelve...LOL! I guess we're set for the apocalypse now, for sure. :)

Just was going to mention that Fleet Farm (N MN) had canning lids aplenty in stock this morning. Kerr brand lids, jars, rings...looked like a complete display. No limits.

I didn't check in depth because I just grabbed a few more boxes of regular lids at $2.79/box. God knows I have enough jars and rings to can for the whole county, but there were cases of wide and regular quarts and pints stacked pretty deep.

With my next trip to WalMart I'll look, but many Great Value items simply seemed to have disappeared. Even the shelf labels have disappeared (meaning product never to return?). Their profit margin is likely much higher with name brands.

I'm fairly lucky in buying, as I'm generally not a fan of most canned food. Tuna (albacore in water) and tomato products are basically the exceptions. There are only two items in the canned pasta section that I find OK, ravioli and macaroni and beef (Beefaroni being the named brand). WalMart has dropped the price of the macaroni and beef to .67 cents a can, the lowest price of all of the canned pastas they carry. For about three months, I think that I was purchasing about 1/4 of their stock that came in. All of the other types, GV or not, are priced higher. And, Beefaroni is 1.24 a can.
