I love ordering from David's Seeds. We especially love their bean seeds. Fabulous germination.
Free shipping if you spend $20. Nice folks!!![/QUOTE]

DH was looking for some seeds to plant now - nothing available locally, and he said Burpee-type sites were out as well. I’m not sure what other websites he checked.

Do you have an online source for late summer seeds?
I was able to order some varieties from Baker Creek late last week. They are out of many varieties, but I stuck to the 'basics' and was able to get green beans, tomatoes, lettuce, cukes, etc. Something is better than nothing! I'm worried about how the spring planting season supply is going to be.

This is the time of year I start looking for good red potatoes at the grocery store to keep in the fridge until spring. Just in case there are no seed potatoes available. (Wouldn't hurt to grab a bag of sweet potatoes as well, to store until next growing season.)

Even just one or two five pound bags of potatoes would be plenty to get a good start, if not a large harvest. If you don't have a lot of growing space, red potatoes are a lot more versatile than most of the white ones I've seen at the grocery store. A red potato tastes fine when baked, but a white one like a russet can become just gritty mush in something like potato salad.

I've planted dried beans from the grocery store with fair luck, too. I once carefully picked out the whole peas from a bag of split peas and they grew some decent little vines that actually bore pods of peas!

One thing I've neglected to save is some sort of corn to grow for the chickens. I do have popcorn and so I'm probably stuck with that unless I can find some of the colored stuff if/when it's sold this fall for decorating.

Carol... remind me later this fall, and I'll send you some Wapsie Valley (or some Silver Mine, if you prefer... it's longer maturity, but that's not a problem where you live) seed. So far, our corn looks great this year...

I have frozen soup leftovers and the potatoes in it took on a woody texture. Maybe someone else will know for sure. But it did not work with my soup. We just picked out the potatoes and ate the rest.
I've also noticed an unpleasant texture change with cooked potatoes that have been frozen. Do some potato varieties work better than others?

Summerthyme, thanks! I'll try to remember that! I'd need very little for a start. (I am thinking of planting some popcorn right away, since there is always the possiblilty here that October could be nice and warm. This would be just enough to see how well it would do...maybe just six or seven seeds in one of my half-barrel containers.)

Digger. I don't ever freeze soup that has potatoes in it, but when I froze chicken stew that was made with potatoes, onions, peas and carrots in thick gravy, everything kept a pretty decent texture.

I'm worried about red seed potatoes for next year, too. Interesting, the red potatoes I've been buying at the stores haven't been holding as well this year as in past years. I've definitely got a good selection of vegetable seeds for next year, but I can't seem to be comfortable with what we've got! More is better :-)

I've still got potatoes in the ground from our growing this spring, some did well, some not so well, we had quite a few different varieties this year. I'm still partial to the reds, they do much better in our neck of the woods. I'm hoping there are good seed potatoes still buried out in the garden, just in case.

Digger, thanks for this post about all three of our little stores being out of canning supplies. I shop there, too and haven't been to WM or any other place down in town since early March.

I've been wracking my brain trying to think of anything I might need so I can hurry and buy it while it's still available and my money is worth anything to buy it with. Seems like there are already plenty of items no longer available.

I have enough jars and lids for this year's canning, but I suspect there are a lot of people who are going to be looking for dehydrators about now. I wonder if those are in short supply now, too?
RE: Canning jars.
At Costco in Utah I found
Di Napoli Classico Organic Tomato, Herbs & Spices (spaghetti sauce) in three pack of quart jars shrink wrapped.

The product's jars are small mouth quart Atlas Mason jars. The jars are a bit squarer and squattier than regular Kerr/Ball jars, but they are real canning jars.

SackLunch, I think I've seen those jars at thrift stores and yard sales. They are really neat and the ones I saw looked to be of thicker glass than the name brand jars.

Dozens of hand sanitizers are potentially toxic, FDA warns

BY KATE GIBSON

MONEYWATCH

The Food and Drug Administration's list of potentially toxic hand sanitizers continues to grow, with the agency warning of more products tainted with methanol.

The FDA's latest warning to consumers and health care providers involves hand sanitizers labeled as containing ethanol, but tested positive for methanol. Also known as wood alcohol, methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and deadly if swallowed.

The regulatory agency has expanded to 75 its list of sanitizers for consumers to avoid — some of which have already been recalled and some the FDA is recommending be recalled — for containing the potentially fatal substance.

"The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death," the FDA stated.

Young children who accidentally ingest these products, as well as adolescents and adults who drink them as an alcohol substitute, are most at risk of methanol poisoning, according to the agency.

The lengthy list of potentially dangerous sanitizers (see below) includes brands sold at Walmart-owned Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club.

The FDA in June initially warned consumers of nine hand sanitizers to avoid and has since added more brands that tested positive for methanol.

The agency's warning comes amid heavy demand for sanitizer due to the coronavirus pandemic, with public health officials urging consumers to frequently wash their hands and to use hand sanitizer. For instance, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using sanitizers that contain at least 60% ethanol alcohol, as well as frequent hand-washing.

The FDA urged consumers to stop using the methanol products, which should be immediately discarded in hazardous waste containers. "Do not flush or pour these products down the drain," the agency counseled in June.

The following is the latest available list of all the potentially toxic sanitizers, according to the FDA:

You have use the old water canning charts as I stated.
People canned this way for decades and lived.
Low acid must be pressure canned. Leaving it processing in boiling water all day won’t make it safe. That said, I understand there have been changes over the years, such as tomatoes have changed their acidity with new strains, changing the recommended processing time. Given old and new times, I would err on the conservative side.

Yes.

The Amish in our community refuse to use pressure scanners. They process everything in boiling water bath.,. Corn, beans, meat. Their processing times are HOURS (like, 5 hours for meat!)... but they still have more "stomach flu" (read: food poisoning) than anyone I've ever seen. Even so, I'm surprised they don't have botulism... but they do boil everything to death after opening the jar. I'm not sure there is much left in the way of nutrition, honestly.

In order to kill botulism spores, the temperature MUST reach 255 degrees Fahrenheit, and stay there for a certain length of time. That simply isn't possible in a boiling water bath. If you are absolutely, scrupulously clean from beginning to end, you will probably be lucky. But Lord, itbscraes me seeing them can carrots and beets that way! By definition, as root vegetables, they are very likely to end up with a bit of soil contamination... and it only takes one spore.

Canned pickled beets are provably the food that causes the most botulism cases in this country... a combination of a root vegetable (exposure to soil where botulism spores live) and recipes without adequate acidity being potentially disastrous.

Of course, as bad as botulism is now, we at least can treat it... albeit at great cost for ICU care. If things go South, the very last thing you need is even garden variety food poisoning, much less botulism.

I'm rarely a stickler for "official rules", but this is one area where the old Y2k mantra applies... it's not the odds, it's the stakes. Do it right!

I have found a old bottle of hand sanitizer and hubby over the last several months has picked up 3 more bottles. NONE were on that list up above, but all of them are 63% to 70% ethyl alcohol. I very rarely use them (I also don't go out of house!) but only concern I noticed with one was its smell and it was sticky. I don't see the sense of not using the only hand sanitizer we have been able to find. I don't see anything wrong with using them, would any of
you'all?

It was one of the newer ones, but I will add a little bit of alcohol and shake it up good and see if that makes it better. Even if it still smells, as long as it does the job, all's good. Thanks I had not thought to do this. Was just going to use it way it was and just try best not to smell it. LOL

I was at the local grocery store this morning and I was getting some soda. i have not bought any since the can thing started. They had signs saying due to the shortage they will not have all varieties. And sure enough, neither Coke or Pepsi had any of the cherry varieties. Just the very basics - Regular, Diet, mountain dew, sprite. None of the "flavored type" sodas.

I went to the Costco in Issaquah, Wa. which is right across the street from Costco's corporate HQ.

Only had two pallets of the Costco Kirkland brand TP that I prefer, small appliances were not as prolific and I'm thinking about getting a nice convection/toaster oven for my kitchen counter should my oven go tit's up. I've been hearing how low the appliance stock has been across the nation and also more importantly, parts for repairing appliances should they need it.

Lot's of Bounty paper towels, no lysol type wipes, I did find a score of tenderloin 'wetpaks' which you have to peel and trim and they were an incredible $7.99 lbs., so I grabbed more. Peeling and trimming are really easy and the tail ends that are too small to make steaks out of, end up as awesome kebab meat.

The trimmed tenderloin in the 'wetpak' or also known as the 'cryopak' were selling for $18.99.

The only canned veggies that I saw were tomatoes and mushrooms.

They had some tomato sauces that they didn't have a week ago.

Soup wise, I could only find the broths.

They had a ton of rice and some beans in the aisle that used to be stocked with canned veggies and soups on the other side of the aisle.

The next aisle was full of all types of pickled veggies and olives, dressings and marinades.

The Costco Kirkland canned chicken which is the best of all the brands out there, was quite plentiful and this time there was no limit. A month ago, they had a "Limit one per customer", so I stocked up on more of that. Good clean meat and less liquid in these cans. The meat is cleaner too than the other brands of canned chicken that you find at the grocery store and not weird blobs of fat either. Very clean.

No more sheet cakes in the bakery, which they have always been famous for, but I think it's because in the Socialist State of Wa., King Inslee decrees that all birthday parties are made verboten with the State. So little round cakes it is.

They still had a lot of Sambucol in stock in the Pharmacy area and although there is no sign saying, "Limit one per customer", they are making you only by one box (comes as a box of two), at the register.

I will be going down to the Costco Business Center in Fife, Wa. (there are two in our state, one in Fife and the other one up north in Lynnwood, Wa.) sometime next week and will report what I see as to what they have or don't have now, these Business Centers are like a regular Costco but cater to the restaurants and businesses. They open at 8am to all and you don't need an Executive Membership to shop there, any Costco member has access to these centers.

It's hardly ever crowded like the regular Costco's and a better selection of restaurant grade kitchen utensils and small appliances, office and cleaning supplies.

They also have the same section that carries shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, pain relievers and vitamins.

They have a Gigantic walk in freezer where you will find stacks of different types of meats and sausages, milk, cream, cheeses and eggs etc.

Just too many fun things they carry that you won't see at the regular Costco's.

And because they cater to businesses, many of the same items at the regular Costco's, are a priced a bit less.

They have a different variety of bakery goods, and different selections in the walk in produce room, has larger and better quality and selections of fruits and veggies and they even carry those ready made salads in a variety of types, like at the grocery stores, but cheaper. V

My son works in a major grocery chain. I told him to keep his eyes/ears open for info. regarding supplies. He said he overheard two drivers talking with the manager about their distribution center being very low on food products. Manager made comment to the two about the shortage not being good. Son said usually the back area is always fully stocked with pallets of stuff to be set out but the last 3 weeks that area has been completely empty.

Shortages, in the store green beans and corn are looking skimpy. Also in the commodities that I get there have been no green beans or corn for the last couple of months. And come to think of it really no vegetables at all except tomatoes, and potatoes. No green peas either. I did get canned peaches and pears. The commodities where I get frozen foods, there were not dried beans or rice. And the other commodities that I get had one 1 pound packages of beans and one 1 pound package or rice.

God is good, all the time.
