Ref my post above--this could also explain Trump's antsiness yesterday to "get business started again"---the mark of a successful business man is they are able to "see ahead" FAR BETTER than the rest of us (the same characteristic that makes a good chess player--being able to foresee 5-10 moves AHEAD (which is why I'm no good at chess).

He SEES AHEAD what's going to happen if we don't get the supply chain going again--but if MOST of our stuff comes from China--how can we fix THAT?

Amazon has really pissed me off. I use the subscribe/save with my PRIME subscription. I normally buy a case of TP a month. Now Amazon has sold my TP to someone willing to pay a higher rate! I would think they would take their regular orders off the market, put them away and sell whats leftover!

On another Amazon note, "non-essential" products (however they might be determining that) are not shipping for another month. My dehydrator died, unfortunately. I popped on to buy another one, and none are shipping before April 22.

Stores will not get back to normal until the panic buying stops.
I really wonder if stores will get "back to normal" this year. I just do not see how they can. It has been almost 3 weeks since I was even in a store in my little local town.

East Tn, went to large grocery yesterday, well stocked (not full by any means) cold cuts cheese, steaks, 6# limit on ground chuck, limits on some stuff, no TP.

didn't want to go into town AT ALL but there were a few things that I thot I'd better get done bc this shite is getting crazier by the nano second and I figured better late than never
  • heard they were going to close the barbershops and I need to get bush hogged every 3-4 weeks
  • had sum shirts at the dry cleaners and they'd already been there 3 weeks
  • had a dozen sticks of 2x6 PT that I'd been draggin my feet about returning to BLOWES and wanted to get my $$$ back because of their new "90 day returns policy
  • figured that I'd get out EARLY and do a "hit and run" at the FUD LYIN and INGLES which have implemented "senior hrs" between 6 -8AM
this is in WAYNESVILLE NC
got all the sticks returned by 6:30AM

hit the grocery stores - BOTH of which looked like a tornado had blown through and taken most everything away.
  • got some reasonably fresh grapes
  • one pkg of the 3 existing hot dog buns left
  • honey ham and honey turkey - 1lb of each
  • there was NO bread, limited milk, and the produce section - the REAL REASON to go to begin with - was virtually EMPTY. a cpl small bags of broccoli very close to their best by dates; NO spinach in the 1LB banjo boxes; minimal lettuce; yellow squash and zucchini - present but looked old

barbershop was closed and sign said something to the effect "hope to see you again soon"

but the most STRIKING THING I noticed was that many of the people looked "hyper alert" - best example of condition orange I'd ever seen. also several masks and LOTS of blue nitrile gloves.

could have been this way becasue these were primarily seniors - who knows - but it wasn't something I'd observed before. unlikely that we'll be going into town again anytime soon.

I keep seeing the no TP and I begin to feel sorry for the guy whose nephew sold all of his TP.....

If you aren't "hoarding" cash, you aren't trying. I remember the adage, "if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying"

Went to the "Senior" hour at the local Safeway in North Denver this morning.

Won't be doing that again (it was a complete gray and white zoo)! Even though they had big signs saying 1 paper product per person, I watched an elderly lady take 4 of the remaining 6 boxes of Kleenex off the shelf. Bet she'll be po'd when they remove 3 of them at checkout.

No meat, very little in the produce aisle, no milk, no eggs, and the list goes on.

Actually watched 2 of the seniors having a melt down over missing out on the TP.

I only needed a few things, most of which I couldn't get and managed to get out of there for a whopping $15.00.

Finally seeing lots of masks and gloves. Biggest pain was their sneeze guards over the check writing counter - I used the handle on the buggy.

On a good note, ran into my cousin who only lives a couple of block from me - she was after produce as well and her husband is really immune compromised. We caught up on the family news in the parking lot - keeping our social distance of course.

I did my usual weekly out and about for fresh stuff this morning. Rural grocery, liquor store and meat store. I AIN'T giving any more reports on the state or level of store stocks after last week and weekend out-of-town raiders. :) Only thing I will say is that in all three stores, there were WAY more employees than customers. People are finally settling down a bit.

Did catch a few passing conversations. Nobody or nothing is gonna stop Minnesotans from yik-yakking in the store aisles. Young folks at the store...looked like the mid-to-late 20's young professional types, chatting with older local folks in the store saying more or less "good to see you back home, glad to hear you are staying for the duration, say hi to your mom and pop." Tells me a lot of the younger generation and young families have moved back up north to be with extended family for the time being. Also, dazed looking husbands out shopping with a list...I'm thinking shopping for a health compromised/vulnerable wife, a mom staying home riding herd on kids..or working an essential job. In fact, that was the jist of the greetings from the store staff and acquaintances the guys were running into in the stores.

That's about all I'm willing to share at this point, except that I made a point to sincerely thank the staff in all three stores for manning the front lines as they have and continue to do.

Also adding: All three stores had Help Wanted signs stuck to the front door.

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Improved from 8 days ago! My smaller, local Jewel food store, Villa Park, IL had eggs and meat today!

With strict limits of 1 package per person. NO baby wipes! Not a one! Toilet paper and other paper goods almost back to normal. Again, with purchasing limits.
MORE customers wore face masks than last week AND kept their distances! No crowding up in your check out lane.
Had someone back up because we were too close in an aisle.

They need the limits to be sure there is some for most everyone as they need it. People are too lazy to set up a chain buy (3-6 family members including children buying the same thing) or make daily trips, so the limiting bit should help for a while.

This too shall pass.
Maybe the people buying houses are locking in really low interest rates while they last?

And I had a thought yesterday. Daughter was watching My Neighbor Totoro, and I was reminded of the Japanese custom of bowing in greeting. I like that better than elbow bumping, and it’s a better greeting for social distancing. We ought to spread that and see if we can make it go viral. (I happen to like the hand-shake as a greeting; I think it’s friendlier. But given the times we live in, we really are going to have to give it up.)

We've been in lockdown for a week, but I decided to make a last grocery, liquor and tobacco run today. We're in the Poplarville area of southern Mississippi, about fifty miles above Gulfport and Biloxi. No pressing need for anything, but the reports of growing shortages prompted this buying trip. Also, DW wanted fresh salad which she anticipated being her last for a long time.

Several bare/thin shelves in the supermarket and a sign limiting customers to one bread product each. Canned milk was almost gone and I scored the last four cans of evaporated. There were still several cans of sweetened condensed milk and gallons and half gallons of whole, low fat and skim milk in the cooler was plentiful. I bought four more gallons of whole milk. DW freezes it and then dilutes it with powdered milk to stretch it out. Overall, the supermarket looked well stocked except for the (relatively few) aforementioned bare shelves. They had hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrance and a sign stating that they sprayed their shopping carts with disinfectant several times a day.

I dropped a couple of hundred bucks at the liquor store stocking up. Mississippi is one of those states with a state monopoly on alcohol sales and all of the stores have to buy from a central ABC authority. The store manager said that they were getting "most" of their orders. Everything I wanted was available.

The tobacco store was interesting. On another thread I mentioned that I was there last week and the clerk was a young woman who had been a Navy corpsman. She was well-versed on the virus threat and we discussed it for several minutes. Today, her mother was behind the counter and warned me that her distributor said that next week they were going to have to start rationing products!

The main street in our little town looks mostly deserted with many small shops closed and virtually no foot traffic on the sidewalks. The City of Poplarville is the county seat, so there was - as expected - some activity around the courthouse and other government offices.

Guess that's about it for now. We shouldn't have to leave the homestead for the foreseeable future.

Our little part of Arkansas is still experiencing lots of shortages. My 87 year old mother in law needed some things her aide could not get at Walmart. We were able to get it at Harps in our town. Not the kind of paper she uses, but a product at least. Thank goodness she had just gotten a large package of toilet paper. We were in the store on Monday. Their last truck was Saturday. Hubby took pictures of the almost, and empty shelves to convince his mom to plan at least 3 weeks ahead for stuff she needs. Harps was getting a truck the next day. But it will be packed in the store and I do not want to go when there are lots of people. And their wipes were out that you clean the carts with. My baggie of wipes in my purse really came in handy. On Monday there was no TP, eggs, flour, canned biscuits, onions, potatoes, or lemons. Canned vegetables, noodles, meat, bread and most everything was low except junk food and sodas.

I figured I’d try to get my GD involved in sewing some face masks. I was surprised to find Joann Fabrics open, so I went in. No elastic. :(

Quick grocery run yielded no yeast!

And finally, why do these grocery stores think that seniors want to shop AT 6:00 AM????

There was a limit on eggs: One package per shopper. I wasn't the only one with a mask. It's going to take some fast talking before I do another stock up run. That was crazy. No one was nasty, just insanely tedious.

I ordered 1/4” elastic from Amazon, a big spool, and it won’t get here until late May or early June.

I ordered a bag of olive leaves the other day. Didn't say anything about not shipping. It went thro.

Saw a sign that the grocery store was not accepting returns of: TP, hand sanitizer, rice, disinfectant wipes and a few other things. Wonder if some folks tried to corner the market?

This. With daylight savings time in effect, it is still pitch dark at 7AM here. I don't go out and about in the dark by myself anymore, it doesn't feel safe and it's difficult for me to see well enough to drive in the dark. Where I live, there are no street lights until you get close to town and there are many critters who run across the road in front of cars while its dark.

I thought I'd try and do a Walmart order just to replace what we used in the last week. Evidently no more "2 day ship to home" or their software is messed up again. I haven't done a pick up order since last summer, so I thought I'd just do that. You used to be able to schedule a pick up day 10 days out. They are only scheduling pick ups 2 days ahead, and they're all booked. So I guess I will have to go to the infernal store. I hate to shop anyway and have usually gone early in the morning and got all my dry stuff and just run in in the afternoon and grabbed perishables. Since they changed their hours, I can't do that anymore. I'm afraid to go to the store and afraid not to keep up my stocks.

Depends on what you order...whether Amazon itself has it in stock. My little amp has been shipped and is set to be delivered on Friday. That's sure not a priority item, except for bored guitar pickers. :)

Yep. I put in a diverse order last Friday. Pepper spray, socks, coffee creamer, dental floss picks, and a few other items. They shipped the pepper spray on Saturday (they have their priorities in order, security first!), everything else shipped Monday.
