I just got back from a run to our local Kroger and it's kind of weird compared to most of the reports posted here. It's quite well stocked with everything. And a lot of the aisles were almost blocked with carts piled with boxes of stuff to be stocked. The stock levels may change considerably as the Saturday shoppers hit.

I got some more ground beef based on the thread here forecasting a dramatic rise in price/availability. The 80/20 is $3.49/lb. The meat manager said she hadn't heard anything about a coming price increase. The meat was reasonably well stocked and she said that the only thing she ordered that wasn't coming in was turkey breast that was on sale.
I wonder what is going on with there so much difference in store stock depending on where you are?

The death burgers are made from green dried peas among other thing including some lab manufactured chemicals. THE PEAS ARE RAPIDLY DRIED BY SOAKING THEM IN ROUND-UP. Search Google for "glyphosate impossible burgers"

Enjoy!!!!!!!

GAAAHHH!!!

Most of the "fake meat" I've seen is Frankenfood. I prefer the old-school vegetarian workarounds. Put firm tofu in the freezer to make it chewier. Tempeh makes great unchicken salad. Mushrooms add meaty texture and umami. Legumes plus whole grains equal complete protein. So does a little dairy added to beans or whole grains.

TMI: Processed pea protein gives me . . . ahem . . . wind. Greta would not approve.

I will tell you people are getting testy for sure. I was at Home Depot getting some supplies when a guy who couldn't wait, decided he needed to get out first.

It went this way......

Aisle to exit the store was blocked as they had both registers open and myself and the guy across from me had large wide loads.....

Stranger ..... hey will you move aside as I already paid and I don't want to wait on you!
Me....... give it a minute, we paying and you can see we are just about to move..
Stranger.... Fu*k you! I already paid and you can Fu*king move right now.
Me..... No
Stranger....You mother fu*king bastard!! Fu*k you and then he stared to ram everything with his cart.

So he forced a hole between the carts while about 10 of us, including the guy he works with, are staring at him like he lost his mind. All the while he is fu*k this and fu*k that waving his arms and acting like a nut. Saying he has no time for any mother fu*king fat fu*ks, (yeah I am fat), etc....

The thing is both myself and the guy across from us were in the process of getting our receipts, but the guy just could not wait the less than a minute to get out....

(Yes I was armed and did not pull it out).

Even being fat, I could have wiped the floor with him.....

People are really getting testy.... the same with driving.... I have seen more people cutting others off in the last week than I have in a year. It is almost like they are trying to kill someone.

I was at Walmart this morning. Wanted to get some new dish towels. Totally empty! I was kinda shocked. Oh well, maybe next time.

If you want great dish towels that will last forever, I highly recommend Now Designs. Even better than Ritz, which was my old go-to. First ran into Now Designs when Honeyville Grains had a store near me (now closed--waah). Large, thick, woven-in (not printed) stripes/plaids, corner hanging loop. Small, straight stitching. Fabric is cut square and true; they launder well and don't twist, ripple, or roll. Iron up beautifully, if that's your druthers. They used to be made in China, but the most recent package I got was made in India. Pricey? Yeah, a bit, but as far as I can tell, they never die. Buy once, cry once.

Find them on Amazon.

A lot of people are off their meds.

Where I am, some people are still without power and haven't been sleeping much because it's been in the 80s at night, with high humidity.

When I see or hear an a--hole spouting off, I move out of the way. I'm not a coward, but I am an elderly female. It's not worth engaging with anyone, unless they are blocking me and/or trying to steal my wallet, and I take steps to keep space around me to avoid that.

And as I've mentioned, if it's urgent to shop, try to do so first thing. Most of the customers in the store at that hour will be busy professionals who want to get in and get out with zero drama.

It's not like it was, and this is one of the changes. A lot of people can't accept that, which is why I was shopping for some of the seniors, but not now because the students are back and I'm expecting a local spike in COVID soon.

Oh thanks! I'm looking for new dish towels, and I don't want those thin flimsy things. I want some that will last. I'll sure check them out. I bought a 12 pack of bar towels at Sam's thinking they would be good enough a year ago. NOT. After being washed all year, they almost have holes in them.

I'm thinking that the small-town stores are not having the "runs" that more urban/suburban areas are experiencing because they are more or less ordering the same amounts and shipments/week as always. Demand in those stores has been pretty stable throughout the past months. The customer base and culture of the two differs in that some areas have always been "home-cookers" while other more urban areas have relied much more on eating out and convenience food.

The rural and small town stores are more or less business-as-usual while stores in the larger population areas are having to scramble to make up for increased demand. Wholesale suppliers are going to honor their commitments with their most loyal and stable retailers first.

Just my take after watching this phenom rather closely.

This is why if I absolutely MUST go into a store, I go right at opening time. You just never know when someone is going to lose their sh*t. I don't want to be there when they do.

I googled Now Designs dish towels, and a whole world came alive! Wow, so many to choose from. They are a bit pricey, though. Made to last, so it'll save money in the long run.

Didn't even know they had a website! Bought mine off Amazon. Full disclosure: The only Now Designs product I've used is the Bali Jumbo Dishtowel (24" x 36"!). Don't know anything about the quality of their other items.

Yeah, those exact same ones were on their website. If the ones you have are good quality, I would expect all of them would be. They are all pricey.

I have little use for paper towels. I use dish towels, so I need a good many. All of mine are really old. I'm gonna order a few from Now Designs, but I can't afford to buy all of what I need there.

I knitted myself a few dishcloths and dishtowels from the cones of cotton yarn I got at Walmart. They get a little heavy when wet, but so far, I like them just fine.

It's nice that they can be made any size you want them. I use a simple checkerboard pattern because it goes fast and keeps them from rolling up or under at the edges. After I cast off the knitting, I crochet a chain stitch around the other three sides of the piece so they "match" the cast-off edge..

Things being what they are, we may be back in No Paper Towels Land soon enough. Kroger here only had two multi-packs of Bounty when I was there yesterday.

I save my good ND cloths for actually drying dishes, and pick up whatever's decent at Goodwill for mop-up duty. It's always a stainy mess around the coffeepot . . . my bad, especially that first cup.

Wish I could knit! What brand of yarn do you use?

I crochet my dishcloths, so they've got lots of good scrubbly nubblies, and I make them a little longer than is usual. But they look a little tatty after I wash them, even though I use good yarn. I used to like Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton, but I haven't seen it in ages.

I hear ya. I have two of those large packages of paper towels from Sam's stored, but I don't use them very often. Dish towels are more economical for me. Wash and reuse. I use one for drying dishes, and one for wiping/washing/drying my hands while I'm cooking. I have a stack of old wash cloths in my kitchen to use for spills and such. I call them my clean up rags.

I think she's talking about these. I crochet tote bags and wash cloths using them:

Added: I teach myself new crochet stitches by making wash cloths. They are a small project that I can generally complete quickly, and if I mess up, who cares? It's a wash cloth.

As for learning to knit, there are plenty of good youtubes out there! A wash cloth is also a good beginner project, as is a scarf.

Knit a dishcloth. 9:26 minutes. Summary: instructions for a beginning knitter on how to make a dishcloth

Cyberiot, Meemer is right about the cotton yarn I used. I can get one towel and two dishcloths from one cone of the yarn. So the last time, I made four towels and eight dishcloths. The cloths are large enough that when folded in four, they can make a small hotpad. But I'm careful not to scorch them. They are easy to make, but still too much work to ruin them by being careless.

Went to Sam's Club in Duluth, Minnesota, this morning. Today was the first time in almost 2 months where they had toilet paper and paper towels! So, although I have enough (I think), I got one of each for dd and for a cousin. They've had me watching for it and are happy now!

Sam's had holes in the stocks, as usual, but were more well stocked than usual. However, they didn't have full amounts of most items. But I found a lot of what I was looking for.

Excellent advice here by you and Meemur. I schedule my staff very thin (if at all, depending on the day if the week) for the first and last hour if the day. Even with the extreme heat we are experiencing right now (in the one-teens, 118* yesterday) our mornings—the coolest part of the day—are very sparse with customers in the store. So not only is there minimal customer traffic to contend with right at opening time, you also have the greater availability of store staff should you require assistance.

Don't know if it a regional thing or widespread but can't finf brown sugar or I should say brown sugar at reasonable price. Checked at about 10 stores over last week and $3.00 for a two pound bag was best I could find and bought 4 lbs dark and 4 lbs light from WalMart at that price. I didn't see any generic and name brands was as high as $3.00 a pound This is in southcentral Georgia

Check Aldi's. I had heard it was hard to get and they were fully stocked with it. I think it was $1.69 a bag...normal cost.

Reports here and elsewhere have indicated that chains are shifting stock to their larger outlets. Smaller stores get less stuff.

My sister went to our local Kroger store this afternoon. While shopping she saw a stocker that she is on friendly terms with. My sister was commenting on all the holes in the canned foods and her friend looked her in the eye and said to get all the canned food she could. Said they couldn't and wouldn't say any more, just get all the canned food you can. Very strange and ominous.

Has anyone checked milk prices this week yet??

I forgot milk (yeah, my own fault) at Kroger yesterday, but did not want to fool with those lines this morning so ran up to Walgreens real quick. I’ve done that before in a pinch and bought their Prairie Farms brand skim. It’s always 2.79$ , more than Kroger brand but I was expecting that.

Today it was 4.09/gal!!

I know it wasn’t that high three weeks ago and even the checkout gal mentioned it! I did a triple take and asked her why, in horror, but she didn’t know. WTH?!
