John Deere Girl, you can use vinegar as a fabric softener. It doesn't have to be the expensive name brand type.
Vinegar will rinse away shampoo and any other crap that won't rinse well off of your hair. Your hair will be soft and shiny and if you rinse the vinegar out well, you won't even smell like a pickle! One time when I was in high school (back in covered wagon days, according to my oldest daughter!) I had shampooed my long thick hair and found I'd run out of creme rinse. I also found that Mom had run out of vinegar, so out of desperation, I used the some of the juice from a quart of dill pickles. It worked great,
