Errand day today. (N MN). Ran into Aldi because they are tops for produce on my route, and given that Tuesday is the day before their weekly restock and ad-turnover day (Wednesday), the store looked pretty good. A few holes, but lots of fresh veg, the bread aisle was down a bit, cheese and sausage was fine, canned goods and paper was fine. Dairy/eggs normal. Eggs were .91/dozen. I am still getting a few from the pullets, so hopefully won't have to sink to store eggs yet.

Farm and fleet store was up to snuff. I noticed that they were just getting started setting up their gardening section. A few racks of seeds, but nothing like it will be. They are blind optimists for January in Minnesota, but nice to dream...all of the maple sugaring equipment was on main display at the front of the store. Feed inventory was normal.

The regular grocery store was fine. Plenty of sales this week, and they had everything I was looking for except the Campbells Cream of Chicken (gravy/hotdish/staple). They had that inedible low fat stuff, but it will never darken the door of MY kitchen. Good thing I don't need it..have plenty stashed away. Did notice the price of gas has jumped. It's been under $2.00/gallon all summer, fall and up 'til now. Today in Rez-town, was $2.34. Forgot to add that the gas station (a big truckstop Kwik-trip) was darned near out of gas. I found a couple of pumps with 89 Unleaded, but there were bags over nearly all, and there are at least 6 pumping islands at that station, not counting the truck-stop side.

Aldi's brand of cream of chicken soup is good. I quit buying Campbells when I found it and it is only 50 cents a can.

Neither here nor there.
Did a large instacart order this morning. Several substitutions minor but still can't get 93-7 ground beef. May just be because of early hour. Otherwise no shortages. But the prices keep going up. 4.79 for some asparagus. Bread over 6 bucks a loaf on and on. Every time I order. Up up up!

what kind of bread are you buying that it's that expensive? A loaf of bread, whole wheat at my local Aldi is $1.19

Went to Aldi and Fareway yesterday and both were well stocked for most items. There were a few empty shelves and a few areas that were not deep but all in all well stocked EXCEPT for frozen vegetables which were lacking at both stores. No frozen broccoli at either store. Fareway had very nice fresh broccoli on sale so I bought that and will process and freeze it myself. The meat counter at Fareway was fully stocked but not as deep as usual. Of course, with beef prices they probably aren't sell as much beef. I had a gift card and bought a smaller roast and it was $14.72 which is the first beef roast in a year.

I generally use meat in a casserole or other dish to stretch it. I use the leftovers of a roast (beef, chicken or pork) in various dishes to stretch them for many more meals. I would guess that I'll get at least six to as many as 12 meals from that beef roast. I like the wide pan whole wheat or multi-grain bread from Aldi that's $1.99 for a 24 ounce loaf.

Just got back from a run to my local Walmart. NE AR.
Produce was fine, but it looks like the variety has been majorly slashed. Huge sections of the same item. Bread was well stocked. Meat almost wiped out. Very little fresh or frozen meat in the store. Very limited selection of lunch meats, sausage or bacon. Baking aisle hit very hard, but product still available. Very little milk. No large eggs available at all. Zero. had a few XL and jumbo. Canned foods of all kinds are very thin. Prices up across the board.

We bought a sirloin tip roast at Fareway on Saturday, it was on sale for $3.99 a pound. Cooked it yesterday, had some for dinner and then today for lunches. We'll probably get sammies out of that piece of meat through Thursday.

Just returned from my local Smith's. Everything looked pretty normal to me, but as we moved here in September, I can't compare to pre-Covid. DIL says everything at our Walmart looks just like it did pre-Covid. I didn't see any panic shopping, and the only real holes were for items in the case lot sale. We're too far away from out-of-towners to raid our stores, so that's a plus. And no one pays any attention to stocking up, as there are so many middle-of-nowhere ranchers who come into town only once a month, if that.

With regard to people shopping only once a month, that too could account for some empty spots on shelves...timing. My brother for example lives in Mississippi...he only goes into town to grocery shop once a month and he and wifey stock up for the month. Just a thought.

My first ever visit to a Costco today(Mid-MI). Can't compare, but it was full and well stocked. Even T.P. It was busy, but clerk said no, this isn't busy. Saw a few (maybe 4) huge carts that looked like prepping.

One can get good results from saving and planting the bottom inch of green onions/scallions, which come with roots, the white part and green tops. A sunny windowsill will do, don't even need lights. Same for the bottom inch or so of celery- it will sprout, and send down roots.

Yep, I do that with lettuce also, and carrots; you of course don't get another carrot, but greens that I throw in my smoothies.

I put some of the green onions out in a big pot by my front door; they grow bigger out there, and even survive cold & snow although they might go dormant or slower.

I'm seeing a shortage of pasta in Kroger and Walmart and the herb and spice shelf has been half empty for months. Also sweet cream butter is getting hit and miss. I have been buying a jar of Ghee every time I go food shopping. I have stocked up on Better then Bullion and it's getting hard to find. That stuff will make boiled paper taste good.

On Monday Menards had seeds, seed starting medium and seed starting trays in stock and prices not inflated.

I didn't mention in my grocery post but I shopped mid day (11:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m.) on a Monday and the grocery stores were VERY busy. Both parking lots were 3/4 full and inside was very busy especially at Aldi.

Do not forget to HUNT FOR WILD, EDIBLE PLANTS AND note the environment in which they are growing, AND TRY TO TRANSPLANT THEM TO a similar environment on LAND MUCH CLOSER if not right on your property!

I was given to understand that when people (who lived a nomadic, hunter gatherer life) finally realized that there were too many trying to gather the same wild foods and game, What they then did, is pick the best land with good water they could find with the most wild food and game and settled down on to become farmers and raise livestock they then domesticated. They may have chosen land that had hazelnuts and leeks and mushrooms and wild strawberries, but they THEN went to the unclaimed wild land to retrieve and transplant the wild blackberries and watercress and other wild edibles that they loved, and transplant them to their new permanent home! YOU DO THAT. Transplant everything even wild foods, especially FIRST edible PERENNIALS to grow on Your property !

Just ordered some bareroot elderberry plants from Starks. $90 for 3 bareroot plants. I will probably order more cuttings from Amazon (hate to, but sheesh!!). I did that last year and only one survived, but the price on AZ is like $25 for 12 cuttings.

And the prices of seeds this year!! Holy cow!

Did a pantry run to our local Food Lion (Jefferson, NC) midafternoon. Place was busy but not crazy. Shelves well stocked, and I walked the whole store. Prices normal, sale stuff normal. Folks buying food, not snacks and beer and soft drinks. We broke 2 Benjamins this trip and filled up the truck with food.

I went to HEB (south Texas) yesterday and it was fully stocked. My daughter just texted and said the new HEB in Lubbock (West Texas) is very picked over with lots of holes. She said it looked like back in the Spring.

I wonder whether those holes at the HEB in Lubbock might be because that HEB store is at the farthest end of their distribution network. It's a new store, and HEB may still be having issues keeping it stocked. Give HEB time. They'll figure it out.

HEB Grocery, Austin, Texas.

Anyone seeing a lack of sparking water on the shelves? All of the HEB locations near me do not have any of the flavors of their brand of Sparking Water (other than coconut). They seem to a good selection of the other (much more expensive) big brands. This started with the snow in Austin on this past Sunday/Monday, but has not been resolved yet.

As a point of note: During the big aluminum can shortage & CO2 shortages of the recent past, the HEB brand was always well stocked & it was the big brands that were out of stock everywhere.

Stopped at the Walmart on E470 near I 70 Colorado. Well stocked and full of rich YT peepo's. Keystone chicken and beef, mostly green beans, corn potatoes and carrots for veggies, some beets as well. sparse variety for pasta and dried beans.

They had Lysol in the big cans--LYSOL!!! Costco can't get it and Colo does!:hof:

It's a nasty, windy, black ice, ground blizzard day here today, but only gonna be worse (and much colder) tomorrow, so decided to run out for a bit. This week the grocery store has country style pork ribs for $1.00/lb and boneless top sirloin roast for $2.99/lb, (no limit that I saw) so stupid not to top off the freezer. Slow day, hardly anybody shopping, stocks were good. I noticed that the big jugs of cleaning/disinfectant like Mr. Clean are back, in all of their "flavors". Gas is up 10 cents/gallon.

After the way HEB shit on Mike Lindell for supporting Trump by removing his products from their stores, I'm adding them to my ever growing BOYCOTT list. :fgr:

Luckily we don't have them in my area and only ever shopped them while on business down south.

I read about that. Unfortunately, around here the only choices are HEB and Walmart. There are a few specialty stores like Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, but those aren’t in the little rural towns.

Oh, I sure understand your predicament. My boycotting of WalMart AND Amazon has been a real inconvenience and a real learning experience. Pretty soon, we'll not have any place to shop. :( I just cannot understand why HEB, a self-proclaimed "conservative" "Christian" owned company would do what they did. I guess they weren't as "Christian" or "conservative" as they wanted everybody to believe they were.

Has anyone checked prices for SAUERKRAUT?
Not just for the Jars of kraut, but cheap Libbys or Delmonte 15 oz cans too! (Some places charging $4 to $8 a can!)
They have gone absolutely CRAZY!
And canned BEETS, or canned pickled beets.
I saw FRESH APPLES for $3.99 a pound!
Berries for $4 for 6oz. Not everywhere yet but some stores sre marking up.
The Kraut has at least doubled in price pretty much everywhere though.

Checked out a Whole Foods recently. Beautiful selection of produce and meat. The rest of the store not so much. Empty shelves in places holes on shelves in others. Selection options were limited. The spice section was empty except for a hand full of containers that looked almost out of place.

Asked the staff specifically for seeds to sprout for salads? They pointed me to garden seeds instead. They then told me they didn't have what I asked for. Found some bulk organic seed packages in the supplementary area.

The store's layout and shelving (or lack there of) wasted a lot of very expensive retail space.

No plans to go back at this time. Don't know if the poor management due to stupidity and lack of training is due to negligence or ignorance. There maybe problems in the supply line or due to Covid and or lockdown.

Haven’t been on this thread in awhile!
I have nothing new to report because our stores seem to be chugging along stocked to the gills (central Indiana) !
No holes that I saw this week, even cleaning supplies are fully stocked again.

I didn’t check sale prices in detail but those, I did see I wasn’t overly impressed with. I’m going to Kroger later this weekend.

On The Level
Went to Hannafords yesterday to pick up a prescription. It was packed at 1030 am! Not sure what was up or if its normal now because I haven’t been in there much recently, But there was kind of a urgent atmosphere to it. Some woman told me I couldn’t use the east entrance and pointed to a sign, I asked, “Are you sure?” And walked right in. Pharmacy tech was pleasant and helpful.

I understand how everyone feels about boycotts. However, acquiring goods outweighs Outrage. Stock up and be quiet about it. Doesn't matter where you get the goods, your family survival is more important than giving the finger to a company.

Bumpkin

Companies and corporations will fail, but the most important unit is the family. Whether that is you by yourself, or you and a partner, or you in a partner and some critters or any combination thereof, it is still a family. My admonition to everyone is to look out for your family. Forget about boycotts, they no longer work. Store up and stock up and look up.
