WAR Regional conflict brewing in the Mediterranean

I really really hope the EU does not "back Turkey," if they do it is not only likely to end the EU (not necessarily a bad thing but hard to do over-night) and since Vlad now personally hates the ruler of Turkey for turning Hagia Sophia back into a mosque, Russia might very well back Greece (and probably will anyway).

China is likely to back Turkey, but Russia probably won't, at least not as long as Putin is alive and in charge of things.

Not to mention, it now becomes a sort of "religious war" though it is "really" about resources the Muslim vs. Orthodox Christian will be used on the ground to motivate the public (and militaries) on both sides.

I would think that Iran will back Turkey, since Israel is backing Greece

I think either that or they may stay out of it for the moment, they also know that the "New Ottoman" has said he wants to reconquer the old Ottoman territory and even take over Mecca and Medina.

On the other hand, Iran might back Turkey if they feel they have to be involved (or someone involves them) but that one is really complex, lots of historical issues there - not insurmountable and I doubt that Iran likes Greece much either.

But Shia and Sunna don't usually play nice games together either, at least not for very long.

This is one to watch, I have no idea how it will pan out - same problems with Saudi and a few other places I can think of.

Greece, U.S. foreign ministers to meet over Eastern Mediterranean tensions

ATHENS (Reuters) - The foreign ministers of Greece and the United States will meet in Vienna on Friday to discuss tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Greek foreign ministry said, amid a dispute between Athens and Ankara over hydrocarbon resources.

The meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo comes days after Turkey dispatched the seismic survey vessel Oruc Reis to an area of sea claimed by both nations, saying it will operate there until Aug. 23.

Turkey has said it plans to issue gas exploration and drilling licences in the region, somewhere between the Greek island of Crete and Cyprus, this month.

NATO allies Greece and Turkey vehemently disagree about their overlapping claims on hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Meditteranean, based on conflicting views of how far their continental shelves extend in waters dotted with islands.

Turkey’s latest moves, days after Greece signed a maritime deal with Egypt which angered Ankara, have further raised tensions with its neighbour, ending a brief period of calm brokered by Germany.

Dendias urged Turkey on Tuesday to “immediately leave the Greek continental shelf” saying the country was determined to defend its sovereign rights. Athens has also called for an emergency EU meeting to address the issue.

An extraordinary EU foreign ministers’ meeting has been set for Friday at 1300 GMT, and will be held via teleconferene.

The United States has appealed for a resumption of direct talks between Turkey and Greece, which Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said had been under way for two months until they were broken off last week.

Turkey said the deal with Egypt - which Greek diplomats said effectively nullified an accord between Turkey and the internationally recognised government of Libya - showed it could not trust Athens, and vowed to continue surveying waters that are also claimed by Greece and Cyprus.

Great catch, jward... Looks like folks are choosing sides, and circling the wagons... I think HC alluded to this as possibly being another August 1918? Wise man...

What is your take on all of this? You're certainly dialed-in, information-wise...

Update: P.M. of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis has had a phone call with the President of France Emanuel Macron today and will talk next with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Both conversation dealing with Turkey.

Bright Blessings, danielboon!

Looks like the shaky hand of current events is getting closer to the fuse to war. Who will side with Turkey? Greece has started to accrue capable, more tech-savvy allies, than Turkey alone... Is there a graph of the line-up? Sanity vs. Insanity?

Thanks again, for all you do...

Both sides are making deals with their allies.Economy broken.Tensions worldwide at I'd say pretty high level. Damn, could we very well be on route to a major conflict? It's not just the Turkish ship in Greek's waters. It's all over the world As someone said,we're long overdue WW3

As Foghorn Leghorn might say, "Sufferin' succotash!" Things are really beginning to look serious! Could this go "hot," with anybody who has canned sunshine, getting invited to the party? Have to ask HC if he's a prophet... Damned fine historian as well...

Gotta see if ebay has sunblock SPF 50 Million...

Be safe, have a nice adult beverage, or three, and know that your fellow forumites appreciate your efforts!

My take? I'm a complete neophyte!

My take is whatever House tells me I think ; ) - I use his keen "watcher on the wall eyes", military historian skills, and poetic sensibilities that discern what "rhymes", and run it through my "woman's intuition" and understanding of astrological timing & cycles. Then I dial everything back 11% or so, and reach my opinion.

Anything I get right is to his credit, and any fault in analysis lies wholly with me- though I think we should give him "credit" for that as well. ;)

Only had a few opportunities to test this system, but so far it's been 100% successful.
And yes, he is indeed a very wise man. As are YOU, for discerning that about him :D

Correction, my post. You, and Housecarl, ARE very wise men... There are others, and we're glad and honored to have you!

Anybody would be strengthed to have TB2K's Brain Trust... I remembe a half a century ago, when "military intelligence" wasn't... You folks would have won the war...

Oh my. I'm so tickled to pass as male in this particular venue, thank you!
.. but in all others, my dulcet tone, Liz Taylor eyes, and "days of our lives" shape make passing as such an impossibility :D

Aw shucks folks....

As to the question of canned sunshine there are too many patries directly and one step back involved who have nukes on tap, openly or otherwise, for comfort. I would be interested to know the status and access of any "defense contractors" of Chinese or Pakistani extraction in Saudi Arabia as this mess devolves....
