PREP Really old (21 years) freeze-dried coffee

Loretta Van Riet

Trying to hang out with the cool kids.
Ok, Ok, I know we are supposed to ROTATE our preps. I had to move twice in the last 10 years and I found this little tin that held individual packets of "Taster's Choice" gourmet roast coffee. Best use date of May 2002.

Was stored in a temperature controlled environment. IT TASTES GREAT! Wasn't going to waste coffee.

That is all.

Dont know about coffee but I opened a tin of corn beef from Argentina that was dated 2006 last week.
Shaped a bit like a triangle, had a key to open it and it was delicious.
I suspect they are making cans cheaper nowadays and they may not last long like everything else produced.

I watch mre reviews every now and then and supposedly instant coffee can get some kind of mold on it.

Lol! Just saw this thread and I just took cookies out of the oven. It’s not as old as the other things reported here, but I used chocolate chips that have been in the freezer since 2019. They look and taste brand new.

My mom has a freezer addiction and they are all full. The summer her little brother was killed in a truck accident was 1987. Her grief was lessened by one of the largest wild blackberry harvests in her life. She recently dug down in one freezer and found 5 gallons of those berries. We had a batch of blackberry dumplings made with frozen 1987 vintage blackberries. Yumm not a trace of freezer burn.

I have saved a few prep coolers full of really old stuff just to test it, here and there. Because of this thread, I fixed a box of Betty Crocker Julienne potatoes which "expired" in 2016, and a box of Rice A Roni spanish rice mix dated 2018 for dinner tonight. I'm eating both as I read here, and they are perfect. Potatoes, rice and vermicelli are tender, spice packets were a little lumpy so I broke them up and they are both tasty, no weirdness at all.

I've got some other mixes going back to 2008 which I'll try to get to in the next few days, and will post what I find.

Had some time last night, so I fixed a box of Betty Crocker Seasoned Skillets seasoned crispy potato slices, expiration date of Feb 2008 - 15 years ago. They turned out perfect, had them for dinner. The spice packet for these was no different than had it been new, didn't clump, tasted fine.

Also made a pan of cornbread from a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix, expiration date of Feb 2021, 2 years and 3 months ago. This called for one egg and 1/3 cup of milk. I used 2 eggs and a bit more milk, which I would have done anyway, and greased the pan with a newly opened can of Crisco, which expired a year ago. Tasty, good texture, no problems.

If your unopened instant coffee has gotten hard (seal compromised somehow) fill the jar with water and sit in the fridge. Shake the jar every day or so until it is disolved. Keep adding water as you use it up.

Use to make Iced Coffee, or drink hot. A teaspoon of liquid coffee in a regular size cup and fill with water as normal works fine for me. Others may like it stronger.
