Trump is saying he will block access for Americans to TikTok and WeChat this weekend. How do you feel about that? I know that I have always looked scornfully on countries such as Iran and China that inhibit their populations access to internet. I never thought to see it here. What are your thoughts on this?

Hes not really blocking someone from the internet.
He is blocking something that is controlled by communists.
Plenty of tech articles out there about the dangers of these apps. So I see nothing wrong with it.

as insidious as those applications may be, it is not the place or responsibility of the government to restrict private access. Caveat emptor, so to speak.

government can restrict access to those apps on government equipment or when employed by the government.

WHY would he let a Chinese Intelligence Operation have unfettered access to every dumb ijit's phone??

And even to the not so dumb but who disbelieve the Chinese Intel Op information? which information has been shared in both the Intelligence press and the data info press (think Wired and others).

it falls into the domain of the President. Foreign Affairs, Foreign Commerce.
in the same way the president can build a wall. create trade embargoes,

however he probably would not get so much grief about it if he would shut down that ****ing Nigerian Prince internet scam or root out people who create viruses or email scams or maybe even child porn

While I would agree.
Flip the context a little bit.
Its almost like the gov saying you can't run virus software on your computers because your blocking Chinese hackers.
People and buisneses spend big bucks keeping out hackers and loose big bucks to them.
Here is a platform known to be malicious and to keep allowing it is insane.
We don't allow foreign governments run tv or radio stations in the US for almost the same reason.

Would you have a different opinion if Macafee and all the other virus software started treating it as hostile and started blocking it?

Husband's company uses wechat to communicate with management in China. They just heard this and will adapt. I think it's a good thing.

Well, being a Communist (or ComSymp) yourself, I'd expect you to react this way. TikTok and WeChat are NOT private companies. They are CCP front corps, and the software steals data and sends it directly to the ChiCom government. If you don't already know that, you should pull your head outta your ass and do some research.

I see NO issue with the US government banning infiltration and intelligence gathering software from Communist countries.

You know, I bet we could get enough money together for a ticket for you to China (one-way.) I recommend any Communist country for a Comrade. You people are unfit to be Americans.

ETA: As a complete aside, why did you create a multiple choice poll? If you've never posted a poll before, we do have the Test Forum where you can practice stuff like that.

With antivirus software I have the choice of white listing, or simply riding bareback.

Those who think that implementing a great firewall of America is a splendid idea need to check their personal constitution as well as the written federal and state constitutions.

What then is there to stop someone in government from declaring that TOR, facebook, gmail, Yahoo mail, or any other web or local app needs to be restricted or banned?

If it was merely access to a communication/media portal then my answer would be no, of course. But it's more than that - proven to be spyware, accessing data, and who knows what all, but I'm sure someone does - and all backed by/sponsored by communists. So my answer is yes, of course.

Attacks of all types should not be encouraged or allowed to exist within America with the purpose of harming and destroying our country (recent and current domestic terrorism in the form of 'protests' not excepted though not really be addressed atm). This is an insidious attack; while it looks like this may be blocking First Amendment protections - it's a different objective than that, and preventing attacks is required of our leaders.

Let's extrapolate a bit, and go back to the beginning of WW2. Let's say the Germans and Japanese both deployed software to the US. Let's say that experts (outside of the government) determined that this software was directly linked to spying efforts on the part of the Axis powers.

What would your response be THEN? Serious question, and one I'd like an answer to.

I see some very significant and constitutional differences:

1) WW2 was a declared war. We are not officially at war with the Chinese.

2) Axis espionage directly intercepted government communiques, without consent. Idiots who download malware to their own phone really only put themselves at risk.

2a) The government can filter or block any of their assets, and any external connections to their assets. But I should be free to download any malware I want at my own risk. If TikTok is truly crippling our government because employees are installing it on sensitive and encrypted [mobile devices], then we have a very different problem (personnel).

3) If said software was indeed such a threat to national security, we would either not have heard about it, or it would have been disabled immediately without a drop dead date.

You’re WAY over-reaching.

I really hope that he won't drop the ball...he needs to follow-through and ban those two apps. They are too invasive privacy-wise.

First off, Tik Tok is a rootkit level piece of software for your phone. Its even more invasive than the Facebook app. It's not just 16 year old girls looking for validation that use this program. You have "trendy" CEOs and other C level executives that want to be cool using this too. Imagine a country with the ability to listen in on Fortune 100 executive meetings or on the lead Project Manager with their meetings. The ability to blackmail people is astounding. Blackmail the CTO of a Fortune 500 company because he likes to do degenerate things his wife wouldn't approve of.

These two communist apps are no different than the Ruskies tapping one of the main Telephone trunk lines between the USA and Europe during the cold war.

Both apps were developed under the approval and direction of the CCP to take advantage of the normalcy bias of the majority of Americans to intercept and analyze communications. They were built to allow the CCP agents to use to pump propaganda into this country.

The Chinese are our enemies and we should be actively involved in taking back everything that was moved there through the Clinton, Bush and Obama reigns. There shouldn't be a single piece of technology that isn't monitored and protected against them misusing it for the purpose of eventually hurting the USA..

During WWII many of the "major" manufactures in this country had ties with and some even supported Hitler's rise to power. They had their German branches running throughout the war producing critical goods for the German war effort.

The same drive for money that was there then, is still here. Google has been in bed with the Chinese for some time, in hopes of gaining a bigger slice of the growing Chinese economic pie. Microsoft even made changes to their operating system for use in China. The Chinese have their countrymen involved in every major lab all across the USA and probably have copies of every new technology under development here, there.

The role of government is not to protect individuals, even CEOs from their own stupidity. The government's role is limited, and focused on protecting individual liberty first and government assets second. I care more about freedom than protecting perverted corporate leadership.

They know exactly the risk of installing those apps. Shareholders or the free market will separate the wheat from the chaff.

And while you're expressing concern about apps listening in, what do you think Siri, Andi, Bixby, and Alexa are doing? And more surreptitiously?

There is a huge difference. TikTok is not a main trunk line. You are suggesting that if the Russkies tapped my personal phone, it would be a threat to national security. False.

Normalcy bias is not a threat that the government is charged with addressing.

Enjoy your walk further down the slippery slope of government overreach, nanny statism, and hegelian dialectics.

Agreed. I’ve never seen a single post from him on that issue. Sounds more like a latent case of TDS to me.

i have posted plenty on the subject, and was banned from a specific thread for my opinions.

As for TDS, definitely not. I support our president and have the LARGE sign at the end of my driveway.
