Edwards Heads Back to Kansas to Apologize for Snub
Sun Aug 8, 2004

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Reuters) - Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards was to head to Lawrence, Kansas, on Sunday to offer an apology for an inadvertent snub by presidential hopeful John Kerry and himself.

The two rolled through the town shortly past midnight on Saturday on their campaign train without saying hello or goodbye to an unexpected crowd of more than 1,500 supporters lined up beside the tracks to see them.

To make amends, the campaign juggled its schedule so Edwards could return to Lawrence on Sunday while Kerry resumes the train trip through New Mexico on to Arizona.

"We want to be there for people who are ready to be there for John Kerry and John Edwards," spokesman Mark Kornblau said in explaining why Edwards decided to head back.

Aides said the train did not have a scheduled stop in Lawrence on Saturday and received no advance notice such a crowd would be there.

While the train has slowed down when other large gatherings have appeared, it did not do so on this occasion.

Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, in a web log posted on the Kerry Internet site, wrote they were surprised by the show of support and want to return to Lawrence to express their appreciation.

"We had no news of any crowds waiting for us as we sped in the darkness through Kansas," she explained in the web log.

She wrote that when they first spotted the people, "We raised our hands to wave, but the engineer hadn't slowed and by the time we had waved even a little to the signs and cheers and camera flashes, it was dark again."

"We sat frustrated -- but we knew we were not as frustrated as the people of Lawrence, Kansas, who stood until 1 a.m. for the train to pass through."

"So we awoke ... scrambling to find a way to show Lawrence the same affection it had shown us."
