I went to a neurological Dr yesterday to be evaluated. They told me I have short term memory loss and it will get worse over time. No cure. There is one hope. B12 difficiency (sp) or thyroid problems can cause this . They drew blood to test but they say it is a long shot. Just offer a prayer for me please.

What were you symptoms that caused you to see a neurologist? A few years ago I had a lot of problems. I started to have I guess you call it short term memory loss. I would do something and then next minute think did I already do that? I was on a baby aspirin and I would take it and then think did i take my aspirin or put seasoning in food and think did I already put salt in? It was getting worse and I also was freezing cold all the time. I went to a functional medicine doctor and I had blood work done and started chiropractor treatments and he said my thyroid was low and I took natural thyroid supplements. After a few months I started getting better and the memory thing stopped and I was not cold, but all those vitamins and things did not stop me from getting a pulmonary embolism again.

I have a hospital bill and doctor bills that I have been paying off and I am almost done with the hospital, but all this time I have been off my vitamins because I cannot afford them. I still feel fine, not cold and the memory thing has not started, but I did something weird the other day, I was opening a jar of gravy and poured it in a pan and threw the jar away and then opened the next jar and dumped it in the trash instead of the pan, but I was talking to my son-in-law at the same time, and another time I was fixing my coffee and I reached up and got my cat's Metamucil that I put in his food every morning instead of the sugar. I was looking at it in the spoon right before I dumped in my coffee and realized what I had done, but I am going to start back on my vitamins soon.

Also, the medical doctor said my thyroid was fine. They do not check a whole thyroid panel like the functional medicine doctor did. I have never been diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I was also taking a B12/folic acid supplement. It could also be that I am not cold right now because after my pulmonary embolism thing I am on a blood thinner and it might be my circulation is better. I hope you find some answers.

My great uncle was an MD and 50 years ago, when the fad of "cholesterol is bad!" started, his take on it was that the brain is made primarily fats and cholesterol. Cholesterol circulating in your bloodstream is a sign that you have plenty where it's needed....so reducing that is stupid since it will alter the makeup of the brain. He was ahead of things, as now there are studies that show that blood cholesterol numbers are meaningless as far as overall health, and he refused to treat his 'high cholesterol'. He lived to his late 80's, sharp as a tack and mostly physically able as well.

If you're taking meds to reduce your blood cholesterol, do some research into whether you should be doing so.

Another sneaky culprit that can cause memory issues is antihistamines. My mom would drink Benadryl for her allergies, and it caused plenty of brain fog. Sis and I call it Roomba medicine, because she'd get to the point of aimlessly wandering. So we picked up a generic diphenhydramine, poured it out and replaced it with Big Red. Within a month she was back to normal and never went after an antihistamine again.

Just a couple of suggestions, I don't know if either would apply to your situation or not, but I'd rather toss 'em out there than wish I had!

Best to you, and prayers sent up!
A doctor at the VA told me (a few years ago) that she'd read a study that Benadryl causes memory loss. I had been taking benadryl off and on all my life. I stopped taking it. I agree that coconut oil is helpful for memory loss. Now if I could just remember to take it.

Praying for the person in the op.

An amen for all the prayers you've already got. And just in case, consider the value of notes. I've already learned that writing things down really does help.

Thanks, RG for the info! My DH has been pressured by his doc for years to take med to lower his cholesterol. He did take it about 20 years ago, but it caused muscle pain for him and he quit it and won't take any statins.

I told my DH about the Benadryl now, too, as he has been taking that for a chronically runny nose. I told him that goes with getting older. I know my nose has begun to have that same problem. So he is going to quit the Benadryl as he does have the brain fog. DH thinks it's from his cancer drug, but his oncologist said that's not a side effect of the drug but is most likely from getting older. We never suspected that it might be due to the Benadryl! And he has been taking that daily starting about the time he noticed his brain fog getting worse. So, thanks for the tips and info!

Prayers being said for you. I go to my doc on Thursday and will be requesting a B12 and vitamin D test to check levels. Not fully confident in my fibromyalgia diagnosis.

I will say prayers for you, wab! Like someone else said, do more research and try a few things to see what will or may help you. Everyone is built differently, and what works for one person may not work for another.

I will agree with LightEcho. I used to be really really low on B12. My doc had me come in every week or two for a shot for about 6 months to get me to even the normal range. I had a wide range of issues, including low iron and inability to concentrate and brain fog. However, the pills didn't seem to help me. What kept my B12 level up was the sublingual tabs that you place under your tongue. Placed under the tongue means it gets more of the B12 to the bloodstream faster. I get my sublingual tabs from Sams Club and they work for me. They have a fruity taste and it only takes 30-60 seconds. They keep my B12 level up. The doc told me that older people have a tendency to NOT be able to get B12 from their foods, so they usually need the supplement. And if your B12 level is low, it can and will have a lot of other effects on your health, including decreasing what other vitamins and minerals you can get in your diet. It would really help if you had the B12 test to see where you are at. If you are really low, have your doc put you on the shots for awhile. Then start taking the B12 supplements. Maybe what LightEcho recommended and, if you were really low, even the sublingual such as I take.

I'll be praying for you! But don't just sit and wait for the doc. Be proactive and do some research. Try some different supplements, especially if they will be generally, all around good for you. It won't hurt you and will help you in the long run, even if they may not be the reason, or total reason, for the memory issues.

My dad had that problem. I have since been diagnosed by my naturopath to have food allergies. My symptoms were stuffy sinuses. I always wondered if my Dad had developed food allergies.

Edited to add: I should have said food sensitivities/intolerances. No allergies.

Will say a prayer for you and send encouragement. My DH has been suffering from this for more than 6 years now.
It has been very gradual. He is still functioning with my help just fine. So ignore the Dr and get on with your life.
Some good nutritional advice also. Do your research. There are several supplements I've read about but they have slipped my mind right now. Talk about brain farts.
I hate damn Drs. They put people in a bad depression over what? You could walk out the door and get hit by a meteorite. God knows the date. Nobody else. Do something that makes you happy.

Make sure your B supplements are methylated; most people have an MTHFR variation that prevents methylation of a number of things, including B. The vitamins used to enrich food are *not* methylated.

And yes, make sure to get a full thyroid panel including all the antibodies. I'm always fine on the regular tests but I have Hashimto's Thyroiditis.

Many conditions cause "brain fog" and worse, including thyroid, post-COVID, and reactivated Epstein-Barr virus. EBV is a herpes virus like chicken pox; it stays in your body the same way, and reactivates in some like chicken pox can reactivate as shingles. You need *four* tests for it, especially Early Antigen.

Also look into coconut oil for memory problems.

Most doctors don't have a clue, so a functional medicine doctor, or someone else who understands "alternative medicine", is essential. All the advice here is very good. Don't give up! I'm praying!

I second what Bluelady has said about thyroid. My naturopath did a full thyroid panel and came up with Hashimoto's, but my GP says I don't because he only looked at the regular tests, which are good. By following my naturopath's regimen I am so much healthier and reversing slowly another health issue.

Alternative medicine doctors treat causes, not symptoms like most Western medicine.

Neither here nor there.
On the bright side, we don't have much time left in this world and you will have no memory problems very soon. (I tell myself that every day.)

What I have found helps me: B12 in b-complex.... I use these:

The brain needs fats and other things. A good source- cod liver oil & coconut oil.

When I use these things, I do well. When I forget over time I get run down.
Ingredients:
  • B-Right Benefits -
  • Support Brain & Nerve Tissue - B-Right features methyl folate, the most biologically active form of folate, plus methylcobalamin & niacin, which support brain & nerve tissue. Methylcobalamin is better absorbed & retained than other forms of B12.
  • Pantethine & P-5-P - Pantethine is a precursor to Coenzyme A (CoA), which is necessary for energy production and normal red blood cell & organ function. P-5-P is necessary for the energy metabolism of proteins & amino acids.
  • Convenient Veggie Capsules - Each veggie capsule delivers methylcobalamin B12, pantethine, and P-5-P. Our formula contains no wheat, gluten, soybeans, dairy, egg, fish/shellfish, or peanuts/tree nuts.
  • Superior Nutrition & Formulation - The goal of Jarrow Formulas is to promote optimal health with high-quality, effective, affordable, and superior formulation of dietary supplements. Our customers can be assured of purity, value, and potency.

But does it contain mushrooms, potatoes, pineapple, mango, or citrus, is what I want to know, since those are my main allergies.

Along with supplementing with probiotics or drinking Kefir (same thing).
Gut health is very under rated in it's relationship to brain function.
Gut health or lack, is also implicated in Thyroid issues.

In other words, don't just assume you have to accept this.
This, x1,000!

I can't answer that. It might be worth inquiring because I like how it helps lift brain fog... and some days I feel like a London fog. But looking at your list of allergies, I feel for you. There are many good enzymes in those items... particularly the mango and pineapple. I wonder if you are reacting to chemical treatments of these plants.

Odd that when I went in for surgery that they almost blew a gasket when I said I had one of these within the last 24 hours. They wanted me to abstain for a week. I asked why and they could not give me an answer. Chemicals they call drugs are only for the elite to know about and us lowly ones dare not ask questions.

You are in my thoughts. May I recommend that you ask the doctor for a FULL thyroid panel. TSH WILL lie while hiding a huge problem because your body has backup systems. Until they burn out because no one looked further than a preliminary glance. Good Luck!
