Sooooo, here's my thoughts on this. Considering all the above and aforementioned facts and conversations we're about to see Darwinism in full on action in the worst way. If this new variant is as bad as speculated and with folks refusing to protect themselves and others this puppy is GOING TO EXPLODE IN OUR FACES!!

Remember that the Black Death in the 14th Century started off as Bubonic Plague which was deadly enough coming from the bite of an infected flea, and then it mutated into Pneumonia Plague and became AIRBORNE!! We're already dealing with a strange and deadly disease in the original Covid-19......if this is turning into something even more infective and deadly we are only in the first innings of this pandemic.

People.....we had better standby to stand by, and make sure we've got all or ducks (preps) in a row and keep our heads on a swivel. This could suddenly astronomically explode in our faces. Now, add in all the racial unrest, economic issues, political B.S., an international garbage: China, N. You can't "will it away." You can't say it's all over and gone when 26 states have the highest totals ever in a day. It's likely to explode in your face. Texas followed the sniffles rule. What did they get from that? 97% ICU capacity and climbing. I have a gut feeling that this is not going to end well. Just a gut feeling.... If this new D614G thing is for real it will only be a matter of time before the world is brought to its knees.

Not to nit pick ShadowMan, but all three types of plague (pneumonic, septicemic, and bubonic) are caused by the same bacteria, Yersinia pestis. They are just infections of different parts of the body, (lungs-pneumonic , lymph nodes-bubonic, and circulatory system-septicemic).

ShadowMan, your are correct in all respects. I wish that more people would heed the signs of what is coming our way... Shout it from the highest rooftops, and people can't wrap their heads around the fact that many, many more people will die, and even more will be severly debilitated... The mental accumen of this "ruling" generation, Boomers and their immediate follow-ons, shows that they are bereft of ability and cognitive capacity to deal with the oncoming crisis and chaos. To put it simply, humankind has royally buggered itself.

To expect the science and technology that got us into this mess, to extricate us from near certain doom, is lunacy. This disease is real. It is one of the oldest forms of warfare extant. Simple, cost effective, and yielding stunning results, it also has an unforgiving side effect- it is uncontrollable, and it is not fully understood. It was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world- without vaccine. There was no cure, no way to combat it. It is wildfire on a virgin field. EVERYONE is in danger. EVERYONE.

There is too much conflicting information and too little real data that I have access to, anyway.

I'm a student of history, so I'm planning for another major outbreak this fall (or sooner), just like the Spanish flu.

In the meantime, I'm laying in supplies, enough to last until next summer, as well as getting more books (fiction) and hobby supplies. If I'm wrong, it's all stuff I'll use, just getting it a lot earlier. I'm also trying to avoid crowds, and I'm not eating in restaurants.

My two hard choices: do I get new glasses and a teeth cleaning? I was going to wait two more weeks and see if cases drop off. I may skip the cleaning and just get the glasses. That's hard because I need to be able to see well.

If a lot of this is hype, I'm not going to feel badly that I took precautions. There's so much that we really don't know. At the same time, there are certainly a lot of bullies who are taking advantage of this situation.

Just talked to my good friend that was hospitalized back in the later part of April and intubated and on dialysis for over six weeks. He's getting out of the rehab facility in the next couple of days. None-smoker, none-drinker, physically active, etc., etc., etc.! Except the pneumonic version does go airborne and very recent examinations of Plague pits from the 14th century showed a very high death rate related to the pneumonic version.

There is also some small evidence (but it is very early days) from the Bronze Age Settlements in Sweden, where it may also have played a role.

We also now know (and this is very recent scientific understanding) that Yersinia Pestis was not new disease, it had, in fact, killed people en mass going back at least to the Scandanavian Bronze Age if not before - it does seem to have started as a relatively mild stomach bacteria that morphed, but once it morphed, boy, did it morph.

For various reasons in the Ancient World, it seems to have taken hundreds of years between "visits" (6th-century jump to the 14th) but after that, it just kept coming back in waves until the invention of antibiotics and it still "tries" to comeback every century or so.

Now how to relates to the current situation is this:

Viruses and Bateria disease BOTH MORPH, they CHANGE; they can become less lethal which seems to have happened with a couple of strains of COVID-19, but they can also suddenly become MORE DEADLY and that is some of what we are hearing about at least one highly infectious new strain.

The good news is that human bodies have lived with various forms of Corona Viruses probably since before we were modern people, but the bad news is that THIS ONE is getting past the bodies defenses in new and "interesting ways" (interesting enough I'm perfectly willing to believe the escaped from the lab theory).

The real answer is, pretty much what Torah Tips said: we don't know yet what this thing is going to do.

What won't matter much is if we are "tired of this" or not, or "can the economy take this or not?" the disease simply doesn't care.

If the less-lethal strain takes control of the narrative than this bug will probably become like the seasonal flu, back every year or three, and killing some folks every year but mostly manageable. If the more lethal strain takes over, well we may not have to worry about shutting the economy down again because it will simply shut anyway.

Unless they have worked overseas (or studied epidemiology), there is probably NO ONE in the USA who has a clue just HOW BAD things can really get in a full scale, people dying in the streets with bodies piling up, children starve to death when their parents die on them, type of epidemic.

The US hasn't had one since 1918, even Polio was bad enough to terrify people into locking down at home but it wasn't as bad as 1918.

One "immediate threat," being figuratively put aside in favor of another, does not reduce overall threat or danger. In fact, it compounds it. It stretches your resources, distracts you from your single focus to two or more focii, and weakens your logistics and manpower capabilities. Meanwhile, the serious social difficulties act as a vector for spreading the disease even more widely, in greater concentrations.

dvo, there are no easy solutions to what is happening now, and most certainly, there will be none for the foreseeable future. What lies ahead, at bare minimum, will be catastrophic cascade failures all across the realm of human endeavor. What is happening now, has happened before to other civilizations. Man has not yet grown-up, nor matured- in the main. IF we're not cosmically lucky, look forward to a New Dark Ages...

IF humankind were together concentrate all efforts and resources to solving or obviating the problems we face, I could be more sanguine. However, looking at current trends, it is like watching a giant oil tanker slowly reversing course at sea. If delivery of cargo is time sensitive, and anything doesn't mee the norm, the owners are hosed.

are you isolated, wearing a mask, not hugging, not having sex because:
a) you want to protect other people from your germs
b) you want to protect yourself from other peoples germs

you can be as altruistic as you want, but you really need to consider that
other people really and truly do not give a shit if they give you their germs
(and the government is full of other people)
based on the edicts coming from the government to wear any old silly mask, the entire government does not care about the spread of the virus
