1969 – After a party on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts, United States Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off a wooden bridge into a tidal channel, killing his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne, a former campaign worker.

God has a plan, Trust it!
And then he just swam away.

I remember.

:dvl2:

Not just swam away...he swam.... to another bar where he proceeded to have more drinks for hours and hours. They didn't find the submerged car until after she was already lond dead.

He called his cousin, not for help, but for a ride home. He never called authorities either, and neither did the cousin when he found out what happened.

Are you sure about that?

She actually survived for hours, her head was in a pocket of trapped air... she didn't drown, she suffocated.

The slimebag should still be in jail for murder.

There was speculation that such could be true, but not for hours and I am not sure if it happened at all.

However, the thing that boggled my mind along with all the other things that boggled my mind was that one of Teddy's family retainers was ready and willing to swear that he had been driving the car.

Cooler heads prevailed when it was decided that too many had seen Teddy leave with the lass.

On a more prurient note, Ms Kopechne had no underpants on.

Well, on a somewhat lighter note, I was a boy of nine on this date, eagerly awaiting the first manned lunar landing (Apollo 11) as it was on its way to the moon.

A scuba diver on the scene had stated that areas of the trunk and back seat were almost dry... probably because the car was not in that much water and the tide would change the water levels.

The diver stated she could have remained alive for as much as five hours.

The point is, there was a house on the edge of the water about 25 steps away so she could have easily been saved, either by a rescue call or some immediate aid. It was a pure case of murder.

I thought the correct date for Teddy's Big Swim was the 19th (tomorrow)? Or is this one of those things that happened really late at night and then both dates get used? Either way, Teddy shares his memories with other notable events (including possibly the world's very first parking meters, which arguably had a bigger impact on humanity than the Big Swim):

1993/07/18 - Japanese national elections in Japan ousted the Liberal Democratic Party which ruled since World War II

1966/07/18 - Gemini 10 (John Young & Michael Collins) launched, splashed down on 07/21

1964/07/18 - Racial rioting in Harlem (New York City), riots spread to Bedford-Stuyvesant

1936/07/18 - Spanish Civil War began as Spanish fascist General Francisco Franco set about creating what will become the longest-lasting fascist state

1925/07/18 - German fascist Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" was published

1817/07/18 - British writer Jane Austen died in Winchester (England) at age 41

0064/07/18 - Great Fire of Rome began, lasted nine days, rumor was that Roman Emperor Nero had started it

----------

1996/07/19 - Summer 26th Olympics opened in Georgia (Atlanta), closed 08/09

1985/07/19 - American treasure hunter Mel Fisher discovered the Spanish treasure galleon "Atocha," when it was all over they recovered about $500 million worth of treasure

1983/07/19 - Closed session of Congress to discuss US support for the Nicaraguan Contras

1980/07/19 - Summer 22nd Olympics opened in the USSR (Moscow), closed 08/03, boycotted by the US

1979/07/19 - Nicaraguan Sandinista rebels overthrew US-supported dictator Somoza

1952/07/19 - Summer 15th Olympics were held in Helsinki (Finland), opening ceremony was July 19 and closing ceremony was August 3

1935/07/19 - First parking meters are installed in Oklahoma City

1917/07/19 - British battleship HMS Vanguard sank, 843 died

1545/07/19 - English carrack Mary Rose sank off The Solent, 380 died

This will barely be a footnote, if it gets mention at all, when he finally kicks the bucket. He will be hailed as a champion and great statesmen. The MSM and all the politcal pundits will be falling all over themselves heeping nothing but praise and worship on all that is Kennedy.

I will certainly shed no tear for the treasonous bastard when he goes to meet his maker.

I have the book about the incident written by that diver.

It was stone cold cowardice and murder...

Just wanted to say about my post, I was kidding around only. Kennedy, IMO, should have paid a price for what he did. You have to live under a rock to not know that story. Knowing/related to people in power is how he got away with things. Not something the rest of us are privileged to having. We would have been fried. The elite in charge throw around the word "democracy", is it really???? :shr:

Why didn't Mary Jo's parents or family try to sue the Kennedy's or press the prosecutor to arrest him? If that had been my daughter I sure would not have sat there so quiet for all these years.

Mexico to honor Sen. Kennedy for work on immigration

By Associated Press | Friday, July 18, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Politics

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government is honoring U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy for his defense of immigrant rights.

Mexico announced today it will award Kennedy the Aguila Azteca, the highest honor the government can bestow on foreign dignitaries.

An announcement on Mexico’s federal registry says Kennedy will be presented with a sash in the United States.

Mexico says the Massachusetts Democrat has denounced injustices against migrants and "highlighted the importance of addressing illegal immigration by looking for an integral solution."

Kennedy co-sponsored an immigration reform bill that would boost border security but also create three-year visas for guest workers. The senator was diagnosed with brain cancer in May and has been receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

I'm a liberal who would never have elected TK to higher office.

I've been to look at Dyke Bridge and the turnoffs thereto. I concluded: bad behavior on TK's part, possibly manslaughter (Murder, 3rd degree).
