ALERT October Surprise? - US deploys second aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf

Sopo posted this in Dutch's PERFECT STORM thread, but I think it warrants more attention just in case war is to follow. Seasonality and Elliott Wave market patterns are conducive to a panic here that could come in the form of a geopolitical crisis, even an apocalyptic one. Since the source is DEBKA, I found other sources to confirm (see below). BTW, if Obama was so brazen as to partake in a strike on Iran before the November elections, it seems to me he is acting to vilify American democracy since this would be globally construed as an "October surprise" world-endangering "Zionist" political gambit.

US deploys second air carrier in Persian Gulf with 60 warplanes

USS Abraham Lincoln now opposite Iran

The United States has posted a second aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, in the Persian Gulf and northern Arabian Sea. The announcement came from the Pentagon Tuesday, Oct. 19, two days after the vessel put into port at Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain. debkafile's sources note that this is the first time in two years that Washington had deployed two aircraft carriers at same time - not just one - in waters opposite Iran and Afghanistan.

Facing Iran at the moment therefore is the USS Harry S. Truman which has four squadrons of Hornet and Super Hornet fighter-bombers plus Squadron 116 of early warning, surveillance and command craft, Squadron 131 of electronic warfare craft, two more squadrons of helicopters and one of transports.

The Abraham Lincoln's arrival has raised the number of US fighter-bombers in Iran's neighborhood to 120.

The carrier was accompanied by the guided missile cruiser USS Cape St. George.

The Pentagon announcement was careful to avoid mentioning Iran: US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates approved the presence of a second carrier… to provide surge support for coalition forces in Afghanistan "and to support existing maritime security operations."

But the significance of two massive American naval-aerial strike forces opposite Iranian shores was not lost on Tehran, our sources report. Wednesday, Oct. 20, Brig. Gen. Hussein Salami, Deputy Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, came out with this statement: "The enemies of Iran should know the Islamic establishment's red lines and not trespass them."

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon has sent a second aircraft carrier to support the troop buildup in Afghanistan.

The Navy says the USS Abraham Lincoln and the guided missile cruiser USS Cape St. George arrived in the region over the weekend. The Lincoln brings an airwing that can send an additional 60 aircraft into the war - adding to aircraft already there and flying from the carrier the USS Harry S. Truman.

A statement from the 5th Fleet in Bahrain says Defense Secretary Robert Gates approved the sending of the second carrier to help coalition forces in Afghanistan and support maritime security operations.

The fleet's area of responsibility includes the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea and areas off of the Horn of Africa where a number of nations cooperate on anti-piracy operations.

The mission of the Lincoln Strike Group while deployed will focus on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts, which help establish conditions for regional stability.

“Security and stability lead to peace and prosperity. Lincoln Strike Group is ready to deploy worldwide as a force for peace in support of our nation’s global interests,” said Rear Adm. Mark D. Guadagnini, commander Lincoln Strike Group.

The deployment is part of an ongoing rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations and operating in international waters around the globe, working with other coalition maritime forces.

USS Abraham Lincoln Deploying In October

POSTED: 7:52 a.m. PDT September 5, 2004

EVERETT -- The Everett-based aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will leave on deployment next month, not early next year as previously planned. The Navy made the surprise announcement Saturday.

The Lincoln, which has a crew of about 5,000 when the carrier's air wing is on board, was last deployed to assist the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. The Lincoln spent a record 290 days at sea and returned to Everett in May 2003.

The Navy said the carrier would deploy to the western Pacific Ocean. But Navy Lieutenant Kim Marks said she could not say whether the Lincoln would be returning to the Persian Gulf and the war in Iraq.

U.S. may step up air strikes

The U.S. is preparing for a massive step up of air strikes in Afghanistan with Defence Secretary Robert Gates ordering a second aircraft carrier into the Arabian Sea off the coast of Pakistan, said a media report.

USS Lincoln has been ordered to be deployed in the northern Arabian Sea apparently as part of moves to support a major offensive against Taliban in Afghanistan.

“Two carriers operating off the coast of Pakistan means about 120 aircraft available for missions over Afghanistan. And that's not counting U.S. Air Force missions flown out of Bagram and Kandahar,” CBS news reported.

“Although American commanders frequently say ‘we cannot kill our way out of this war,' that appears to be exactly what the U.S. is doing — unleashing air strikes and special operations raids against the Taliban in an effort to force them to the bargaining table,” said the news channel.

The CBS said this was not likely to change the mind of the Taliban leadership, which remains safe in Pakistan.

But the Pentagon officials hope that local commanders in Afghanistan will either come over to the government side or agree to cease fire.

BTW, how can ACs in the Persian Gulf be used for air strikes on Afghanistan given that Iran is in between?

Maybe by taking a waaaaaay long way around the southern border of Iran across Pakistan, or by violating Iran's airspace... neither sounds plausible.

Look like the Lincoln is in the Gulf of Oman, not in Bahrain as reported by Debka:

Would *I* Lie???
With Irans sunburns, I hope we have a plan for defeating them, if we're going to be so bold. maybe that would justify nuke or VERY detrimental strikes? I doubt this is the plan but.. seems dumb to sit them there if they're not IN USE.

Would TPTB use a war with Iran to try and take our minds off a complete
banking collapse and a 50% devaluation of the dollar after the G20 meeting?

If we make it until November 25th, It will surely be something big to be thankful for.

One month delay in launching Bushehr power plant: nuclear official

Tehran Times Political Desk

http://www.tehrantimes.com/Index_view.asp?code=228697

TEHRAN – The launch of Bushehr nuclear power plant is delayed one month due to some minor technical problems, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Deputy Director Mohammad Ahmadian has said.

“After inspection, we made sure that we are not faced with any serious problem, but there are some minor problems including a small leak in a pool in the middle of the reactor which was fixed,” Ahmadian told IRNA in an interview published on Saturday.

“It takes one month to fix these minor problems, so unfortunately there will be one month delay in the transfer of fuel rods into the reactor core,” he added.

On September 11, Iran’s Nuclear Chief Ali Akbar Salehi announced that nuclear fuel will be loaded into the core of the Bushehr reactor at the beginning of the Iranian calendar month of Mehr (September 23 to October 22), and afterwards, the Bushehr nuclear power plant will begin operation.

Salehi also said the nuclear plant will be able to produce electricity in the Iranian calendar month of Azar (November 22 to December 21).

The plant, located near the port of Bushehr on the coast of the Persian Gulf, will produce 1000 megawatts of electricity once all the fuel rods are loaded into the core of the reactor.

The Bushehr reactor may save Iran 11 million barrels of crude oil or 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year, the London-based World Nuclear Association has estimated.

The plant will also put Iran at least a decade ahead of more prosperous Middle Eastern neighbors such as the United Arab Emirates, which plans to build four nuclear plants by 2020.

Iran produces 30 kilos of 20% enriched uranium, discovers more uranium

http://www.tehrantimes.com/index_View.asp?code=228981

Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN - The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced on Wednesday that it has produced 30 kilograms of 20 percent enriched uranium.

In addition, Iran is extracting uranium ore from the Gechin mine, which is located near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, AEOI Director Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters on Wednesday.

Salehi added that the AEOI can extend the lifetime of the Gechin mine since it is simultaneously extracting uranium ore and conducting exploration operations to find new veins.

“Fortunately, at this stage, we have found some good veins, and we are making extraction preparations,” he stated.

He also said that uranium has been discovered in Saghand and Narigan in Yazd Province but the extraction operations at the two new mines have not begun yet because some preliminary work must be carried out beforehand.

Salehi announced on Monday that the AEOI had started massive operations to explore for uranium in central and southern Iran.

He said Iran decided to explore for uranium in order to become self-sufficient in supplying fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which came on stream in August.

Use of nuclear weapons means end of humanity - Castro

The use of nuclear weapons mean the end of humanity, Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro said in a video address released on the Cubadebate website on Thursday.

"The use of nuclear weapons in a new war would mean the end of humanity," Castro said.

In his 4-minute video, Castro stressed that tensions in the Middle East, in particular an attack on Iran by the United States and Israel, would lead to a global nuclear war, bringing an end to humanity.

"Today there is imminent risk of war with the use of that kind of weapon and I don't harbor the least doubt that an attack by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran would inevitably evolve towards a global nuclear conflict," he said.

Castro has called on world powers to eliminate all nuclear and conventional weapons.

"Let us have the courage to proclaim that all nuclear or conventional weapons, everything that is used to make war, must disappear!" Castro said.
"I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones," Castro quoted Albert Einstein as once saying. "We fully understand what he wanted to convey and he was absolutely right, but there wouldn't be anybody around to make use of those sticks and stones," he added.

North Korea and Iran have been under international sanctions over their nuclear developments.

Although North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has repeatedly stated his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the reclusive communist regime appears to be making steady progress in nuclear research and development.

Iran has stepped up uranium exploration in the central and southern regions of the country.

Self-efficiency in uranium production is important for Iran as the country is defiantly pursuing its controversial nuclear program despite four sets of UN Security Council sanctions.

At present, the Islamic Republic has about 5,000 metric tons of confirmed national reserves of uranium.

The 84-year-old Cuban revolutionary leader, who has rarely been seen in public since ceding power to his younger brother Raul in 2008, made a series of public appearances in summer.

On September 3, he delivered his first public speech since 2006, where he also called on all countries to give up nuclear weapons, speaking on the steps of the University of Havana before a crowd of several thousand people, mostly students.

The former Cuban leader called on the world to take into account Russia's opinion. "Russia is a mighty nuclear power, its opinion should not be ignored," he said.

For what its worth, we had 5 carriers in theater at the time the second Iraq war started. I was on the Constellation in the Persian Gulf along with the Lincoln and the Kitty Hawk, and the Enterprise and Roosevelt were in the Med. But then again the Lincoln is not rotating in to relieve whatever carrier is there now and it does seem like a rushed deployment...

USAF question

How come when the Pentagon releases our Aircraft Carrier locations and plane strengths on a certain location like Afghanistan they never release the number of aircraft already in theater?

I sure the USAF and Marines have aircraft stationed somewhere near by to assist ground troops.

As far as any of us know the USAF could have a hundred strike a/c in country and no one is counting them…

Does the USAF provide cover for ground troops like the Navy does?

Or is the USAF strictly doing bombing missions using B-52, B-1 and Stealth a/c and they leave the actual fighting to the Marines and Navy.

Somebody has to use Operational Security and keep classified info classified. Not much of that going on anymore. The A-10's provide cover for ground troops. Whether or not they are still in theatre? Don't know..

Yeah that. Far too many times of anticipating every routine thing as being imminent doom. As I said, may mean something but maybe not. I would think that if we were going to start something it would take a heck of a lot more than 2 aircraft carrier groups. We'll see.
