Obamas Pick Sidwell Friends School for Daughters
November 21, 2008 4:58 PM

ABC News can report that the Obamas have selected Sidwell Friends for their daughters Sasha and Malia to attend.

Sidwell is where Chelsea Clinton attended school during the Clinton administration.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Obama Transition Team aide Katie McCormick Lelyveld. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

An Obama aide added, "Mrs. Obama is the product of public education on the South Side of Chicago and she believes strongly in the importance of good public schools for all kids. The Obama Administration intends to work closely with the school systems in the years to come to ensure quality public education is available to all kids. The Obamas' daughters are very young and moving to the White House is a big change for them. The primary concern was finding a school that felt comfortable and was in their overall best interest. The Obama daughters bring with them a number of security and privacy concerns that come with being part of the new first family -- and the school they've selected is positioned to appropriately accommodate that."

Three of Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandkids - Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy - also attend Sidwell Friends. At the Democratic National Convention in August, Biden's grandkids had a sleepover with the Obama daughters in their Denver hotel room.

Oh come on. WHAT exactly makes this
A shocking, disgraceful decision the the dirty liberal obamma. This moron's incompetence is almost unbelievable.

from a LOT of points of view this is a VERY GOOD decision.

I dnp;t reember pwople being horrified when Chelsea ent there, or when IIRC the Bushes kids went there (I could be wrong on that one).

This is a TOP TIER school. A Quaker School. And he USSS knows it inside and out, has a LOT of other folk there they are covering, it just makes a LOT of SENSE....

Of course that is just my opinion....

But from simply an EP point of view there are a LOT of folk heaving REAL DEEP sighs.

I agree with other posters saying this is a smart thing to do. If I were president, I would most likely put my kids in private schools as well.

Now if Obama goes out and buys a new luxury behemoth SUV, then I'll get upset. (He did say that we won't be able to drive big SUV's anymore, or something like that.)

Exactly.

I hold HIM to a certain standard. But those little girls shouldn't be put in danger to prove some kind of point. And they WOULD be in danger in a public school.

I don't think public school should even be an option for the children of the PRESIDENT. I mean, come on -- he's not some random politician.

He will be THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

His children AND the other children at a public school would be at risk -- and class would constantly be disrupted.

It's just not smart.

I would think less of him (and I already have a fairly low opinion of him and his wife) if he subjected the Secret Service, his own little daughters, and countless public school families, teachers and administrators to the daily onslaught of the press and the constant fear of some kind of attack just to prove a political point.

In other instances, involving grownups, maybe.

But not when it's little children who serve as the instrument for the political "lesson."

Come on folks- it's DC

His girls don't even speak the native language

No one would send their kids to a public school there unless they didn't have any other options.

The hyporcrisy of the left, and by evidenced by obamma who is their leader, is clearly on display this this appalling decision. It's the dirty liberal left who wants everyone to go to school in the public system. It's the left who discourage and like in CA, openly fight against home schoolers. It's the left to fight tooth and nail against vouchers. It's the left who are beholdent to the teacher unions.

Yes, this hypocrital decision by obamma is reprehensible.

I'm terribly sorry to see that your hatred blinds you to the realities of life in another millieu.

This is the MOST logical, most CARING (or others not in the family) thing he could have done.

Besides they will get a good, ballanced but slightly weighted towards lib, education, in a school that virtually guarantees that when they leave DC (in 4 or 8 years) they wll be abl to hold their own at ANY prep school in the country.

All the leftist here in Indy are the same way. They want no caps on property taxes, because the schools don't want them. They want billions shoved into the K-12, multi-million dollar sports complexes for K-12, yet the vast majority of them send their kids to private schools. Hypocrites.

Why hypocrites? It's just the wisest move under the circumstances. I do recall that the Queen of England's GS was to fight in the ME but was nixed because of the dangers it posed for others. I did not vote Obama, but his choice was purely logical.

I would love to have my kids in private school NOW! I don't blame him one bit (don't support him, don't like him, but don't blame him for making this decision.)

Are we there yet?
Realistically....

No one that I know that lives in the DC Metro area has their kids in public school (with the exception of Montgomery Co. and parts of Virginia). DC public schools are scary for regular kids. It would be a severe misuse of Secret Service resources to try to have them at a public school since there would have to be so many agents there. (Plus you would then still have to essentially home school them).

+1

I'll disagree with him on most things but this isn't one of them. I choose to pay for a better education for my kids than they would most likely get in public schools, can't fault the Obama's for doing the same.

The students, staff and parents can be vetted easier. Control is simple compared to a public school. Less inpact on a private school by the girls presence than a public school would require. The USSS can move in, set up an ops room at the school, plus a reaction team nearby............some school zones in public are not so.

So from a principle protection point of view it is the best choice.

The school will be one of the safest in the world on one hand...............on the other it will be a target.

There were outraged articles when it was decided for Chelsea too.

Clinton left this country in very good financial shape. The world was obsessed with his blow jobs but Bush has screwed the entire country.

Let's see what Obama will do (if he manages to become Prez due to constitutional questions of birth etc). Can he trump Bush as the very worst Prez ever?

I'm still waiting to see if Tecumseh is active or if Bush will last throughout his last term.

Actually they were looking at two different exclusive private schools in Washington.

Interestingly, Sidwell Friends is the less "diverse" of the two.

I'm assuming that the Obamas are paying the private school tuition out of their own funds and not directly from taxpayer money.

If so, they can send their kids anywhere they want.

There is an element in hypocrisy among the Left though on the idea that "everyone" (except those who can afford it) should have their kids in public school---they oppose homeschooling and religious schooling because they can't control the curricula as they can, and do, in the public schools.

The hypocrisy is class-related, if you look at it. A Leftist who isn't making big bucks puts their kids in public school. Only the rich can afford schools like Sidwell Friends. Where the double standard comes in is that rich Democrats/liberals/Leftists are GOOD, but rich Republicans/conservatives/right-wing are BAD.

It wasn't his blow jobs that the "rest of the country" (I'm guessing by that you are negatively judging those with moral standards...say like being against adultery), but the fact that he so glibly lied while under oath about receiving blow jobs. That clarify it for you?

ETA: BTW, I have no problem with Obama's kids going wherever they want to send them, as long as they are paying for it.

This is typical. There are security issues involved here, and a private school is easier to deal with.

So what. I could care less what school the First Kids go too. Their dad ran for president, not them. They should not be expected to live their lives in some fashion to suit the public. Let them live as normally as possible.

All of the presidential kids have to put up with CRAP. Look at the BS with Barbara and Jenna Bush and the underaged drinking. So frickin' what? There is NO WAY that restaurant would have called 911 for someone drinking underaged if it HADN'T been Jenna Bush.

People made fun of Chelsea Clinton's hair and braces. Good God, the poor kid was what, fourteen? How CRUEL.

And Amy Carter.

The press would have slaughtered poor Bristol Palin if Sarah had been elected. Can you imagine going to your baby shower with a Secret Service go in tow? Or a Lamaze class?

LEAVE PRESIDENT'S KIDS ALONE.

The very best and smartest move, short of homeschooling them in the White House.

For the kids yes. Politically, nope. I detest the man, but he did what a parent should do and put his kid first. That is a good thing. HOWEVER, he talked such a big game about how great the public schools were etc etc and a lot of people expected him to put his money where his mouth is.

Why? He's a politician. Find me more than one or two of them who ever put their money where their mouth is.

Uh, you are wrong. The Bush twins (Barbara) were at Yale and (Jenna) The University Of Texas At Austin during GW's 1st term. And little Jenna just couldn't stay out of the news for most of 2001, repeatedly being busted for underage drinking. Until September 11.
