Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama on Tuesday commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning and pardoned James Cartwright.

Manning was convicted of stealing and disseminating 750,000 pages of documents and videos to WikiLeaks.
Cartwright, the former vice chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, pleaded guilty in October to a single charge of making false statements to federal investigators in 2012 when he was questioned about leaking top secret information on US efforts to cripple Iran's nuclear program to two journalists.

Likelier than not don't be surprised to see a veritable truck load of blanket pardons going out to members and donors of the DNC next....

ETA: As for Gen. Cartwright, the working theory is that he leaked the Iran material at the behest of Obama so as to give the MSM some meat to work with....

Barack Obama commutes majority of Chelsea Manning's prison sentence

The whistleblower, who has been imprisoned for six years for leaking state secrets, is now set to go free on 17 May



In his final days in office, President Barack Obama has commuted the majority of Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence.

Manning, the army soldier who leaked state secrets in 2010 and has been imprisoned for six years – longer than any other official leaker in US history – is now set to go free on May 17, 2017 rather than in 2045.

NBC News reported last week that Manning had been on a shortlist for commutation. It was presumed that the incoming president, Donald Trump, would be unlikely to look favorably on her case and that under him her 35-year sentence would be left to run its course.

Last week, Manning called on President Obama last week to show her clemency, saying that this amounted to her last chance for freedom “for a very long time”.

Manning told the Guardian that the petition she made to Obama in November was “the last real chance to make my case to go home for a very long time”. She said that the appeal she filed against her sentence last May would take many years to work its way through the courts.

Stupidity on a gargantuan level. I wonder how long "Chelsea" will last once it is released, and which govt. agency will pull the whack job. My bet is CIA doing the deed.

News is saying that Obama made the decision to pass on the Berghdall pardon.
I'm worried about a last minute pardon of Hillary at 11:59 or there abouts on Friday.

All the hoopla around the inauguration will play down the news of a Hillary pardon.

I don't think he did her any favors. Trans are still not excepted by most. So no work, no sex change and really no place to go. She will most likely kill herself within a year or so.

I don't think so, particularly with those who voted for Trump or Sanders, never mind the Congressional committees that have been investigating her and her actions....

I think this is the first time a person is pardoned for a crime committed by another person.
Or is it the same person? The question is if you become a different person when they modify your body?
See, I have those basic questions....
This is a black eye to the military and a kiss for the LBGT community by our community organizer.

And of course he won't free Leonard Peltier!

I heard that Obunghole was 'afraid' that if he released Leonard, he'd go straight to Standing Rock and start up a bunch of violence.

Typical of the DC mindset and of course, let's face it, alot of people get nervous around Indians and are afraid of us Indians. I've been dealing with it my whole life.

No big deal but still weird.

Anyway, for any spooks reading this, I can assure you he won't be doing that.

He has more important things to do, like seeing and spending time with his kids and grandkids and will need probably what years he has left to just adjust to the outside.

Family comes first and he's a Robideau so that's how it is.

I can't believe people in DC and O would be stupid enough to think he'd go straight to Standing Rock! WTF??!!??

Really, if Obama wanted to do just one redeeming thing in his life, He Will Free Leonard Peltier at least on the last day of his term. V

Technically, Obama didn't pardon Manning, he commuted his 35 year sentence to time served plus however much time till May. The other thing nobody picked up on is Wikileaks Assange said he would accept extradition to the USA if Manning was let out of jail.
It is likely Assange will now be extradited back to the USA to stand trial for leaking everything. Assange may then face extradition back to Sweden on the rape charges.

The one who got screwed is Snowden because the NSA hates him viciously since he outed their fascist spying and monitoring network. The fourth amendment, we don't need no stinking fourth amendment!

I hate Obama as much as anybody here, but this case is much more complex, and involves major political issues than Manning being a transexual.
