Do you have any houseplants?
Yes, every window sill. Mostly African Violets. I keep planting the leaves and growing more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!I turn 60 tomorrow. No family or friends to spend the holiday with. I might not even have beer on hand.
How's that for depressing.
But, I can cook a great dinner for one.
On a different topic, has anyone here ever added chopped walnuts to pumpkin pies? I was thinking of doing that....sounds good to me.
I’m back, too! While dining on that home canned cabbage-tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich, feeling a bit sorry for lonely little me, the doorbell rang......it was the son who still lives in the area....they had stopped at Cracker Barrel and brought me a complete meal, incl. a piece of yummy pumpkin pie......PLUS an entire pecan pie! Talk about a nice surprise! ( I know that CoVid keeps them from inviting me over., hence, life gets a bit lonely on special holidays.)
Wow! I was able to find enough room in my frig for the entire meal for tomorrow, and even the whole pecan pie!

Get the truck fixed and next year come on down to Ga. It's nice this time of year. Bring the cat.I'm in WNY.
I heard my kitchen door open this morning which woke me up, then I fell back a sleep. Got up to make coffee and found the X wife had left me a birthday present. A case of cat food and a bag of groceries full of veg and fruit along with a card. Also a few mini pies so I have something to put my 60 year candle on. Same candle we had on my moms birthday cake a few decades ago. Had no beer for tonight so I hopped on the ten speed and rode 1.5 miles into town in a light mist and found Dollar General was still open. Would you believe I was asked for an ID? And, my license expired today. Stopped at the post office as I came home and there was my renewal notice. Now if I could just get my truck back on the road.
Thanks AlfaMan! I get really angry at myself because I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about. But it hits every year in November and starts to lift when the daffodils pop up. I'm already ready for daffodils!

Yup. I second that. Had to move out of Western Ma becauseDon't get mad at yourself! You know the reason. It's alright. Keep taking the supplements. I don't know what you are taking, but look into light therapy and have your thyroid checked. All of those have a huge difference with s.a.d.
mzkitty...
I remember. Down here, the shortest days see sunrise at 7:15 and sunset at 5:30.It gets dark real early here in mn, and the sun doesn't come up till late.
After killing half the Kraken bottle (please pray for me - this has got to stop) and dealing with a "Happy Thanksgiving to you," text at 12:01 am, from the soon to be Ex, and a reply to him at 4 am, it's onward and upward. Had a few hours sleep.

I love them all girl.
The snow is never too deep but a half inch rain causes disaster. And winter may or may not fall on a weekend.

Yes, I do have hypothyroid and take the meds for it. It's strange, I used to live up in northern NH and didn't have any problems. Even though the days were shorter than here in Virginia, it was always very bright with snow on the ground for months. Here, no snow yet and we're in a hollow so at this time of year until mid January the sun barely makes it over the ridge. It kind of goes around just bellow the tree tops all day. I have some of those lights on a string. I'm going to hang them behind my chair here, see if that helps. We have a lot of farm animals to tend to- pigs, goats, horses, sheep, chickens and quail. I must walk at least two miles a day just doing chores. Hubby thought we may need to cut back but I told him NO, I need outside chores to keep me going! Don't want to have to join a gym

Yep overcast by afternoon most days. Most of Winter is just grey.Yup. I second that. Had to move out of Western Ma becauseit was infested with liberaovercast for 6 months of the year. Suffered from Depression most of my teenage years.
Moved South and haven't been depressed a day since.
I've been sad, and grieved, but not depressed.
Vitamin D and being outside in the sunshine is a big factor for mental health.
They're ALWAYS YOUR "kids", no matter how old, and you always wish you could fix the world for them. You can't- but you sure wish you could!Me and mrs. were ok till yesterday laughing about having thanksgiving together her getting the pies and dressing done. Me helping when asked generally fun day, then my 44yr old daughter called bawling and sqawling like a little girl. momma I miss you you and daddy it doesn't feel right y'all not being here. That put a damper on the thanksgiving mood for both of us.
Summerthyme turned me on to L-Theanine for S.A.D. and I'm so very thankful. Have tried a lot of supplements to battle the soul crushing Ohio winter blues, but that one finally clicked with my system.
Wherever you are summerthyme, this is for you

Meemur, thanks much for the recipe for Struesel Walnut Pumpkin Pie...it DOES look like a winner! I can see where the Struesel would add a lot!
Mary Contrary, I have a confession to make....in reading your post, #222 (I haven't figured out how to add previous posts without cutting and pasting, and yours is rather long.)....when I read it, I laughed so hard, I cried! Which is probably sinful, and I certainly don't see anything funny about your lack of appliances, it's the style you have of telling about them! I got to thinking your little essay would be great fodder for a stand-up comedian! You may have missed your calling!
Wow. I like them too. I didn't know Aldies sold them. Will look.I love a Cornish hen, I’ll have to buy two of them the next time Aldis has them in stock. I pack them with a wild rice dressing and then bake, yum.
Have you ever read Possum Living by Dolly Freed? It came to mind when reading Mary's post.
Yum!!!Nope. In a grumpy pisssy mood this morning.
If dinner were my choice, I'd fix bacon and eggs.
No reason to be angry... it's just a chemical reaction many have to the shorter, dark days.
Have you tried taking L-tyrosine? It's an amino acid, and it works amazingly well on SADD, as well as other forms of depression. 1000-1500 mgs a day keeps us going in the winter, and we'd really struggle otherwise.

People leave their phone on when in bed? Not me. I turn it completely off. It's easier to cope with things when you are well-rested. Unless you need to be on call in the wee hours, consider turning off the sound on your phone when you go to bed. I haven't buried an ax in anyone's head since I started muting calls and notifications at night.
I admire your 4 a.m. reply. Nicely done!
I absolutely LOVE Glenn Miller! My favorite 1940's tune is American Patrol!!!! I could listen to it over and over and over.No guests, no dishes.
Opened the windows, washed and pressed the curtains, changed the bed linens, put a new cover on the ironing board.
Listening to Glenn Miller and Bennie Goodman. Might as well be 1945. I'm okay with that.
It's all good.
