CHAT Not in the Thanksgiving Mood this Year

I'm always thankful throughout the year, but I'm not in the festive spirit this year, either. Still, we'll be having guests over for a meal tomorrow. I'm thinking, right now, that Christmas won't be any different.
Me too, I'm thankful every day for my blessings. Holiday celebrations are just too stressful and back when I cooked all that cooking stuff wore me down big time. I didn't enjoy it then and I don't now. When I was growing up there was always drama from my mother and raising my sons there was drama from their dad. It was a viscious cycle. DH and are blessed to have each other.

Only worry about what you can control!
I'll do what I always do, Worry about what I can control and let God handle the rest.

Family is coming together tomorrow, the West Virginia crew and the Kentucky crew will be on the North Carolina farm this year. Our county Sheriff is not listening to the executive orders, he thinks they should spend their time enforcing actual laws not directives.

I'm sorry everyone is feeling down this year with loss or frustration and I pray that the mood lightens and everyone finds some peace tomorrow.

If you've never been served chow for Thanksgiving you just can't understand where I come from, but I'll never miss a holiday with family again if I have any say in it. If you are ever to drag me into a fight I really don't want to be part of, pray to whatever god you believe in that it doesn't interrupt my family gathering.

If I am still upright, I will be having Thanksgiving again next year no matter what is going on. Ya'll are welcome to sit at the table if the need or want ever arises!

Happy Thanksgiving to all! And God bless

I'm going to enjoy it the best I can, and I will be spending it as I have done for the last 5 years or so with people I love that have shown me much more mercy than I can ever rightfully deserve.

The powers that be want to shut down thanksgiving and every last shred of enjoyment I can have, well my response is to give them the finger and do it all in spite of them and savor every last bit of what might be remaining to all of us.

We lost our beautiful Russian Blue last night. 22 years old. Little Boy Blue. Or Smokey as his Dad called him.
When he showed up here he was injured and horribly abused. And mean. It took awhile but he finally quit terrorizing me and became my boy and his Dad's lap cat. He is resting peacefully in our kitty cemetery with a coyote and a Celtic cross and a fairy stick and 6 of our other beloved kitties.
So TG is a little sad but I am trying. I did get my Irish poor man's fruitcake made today. And everything ready for our dinner. Just DH and myself and our 6 other darlings. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

I'm so sorry Terrwyn. I had a Russian Blue that I loved and who died too. They get into your soul, somehow.

And this may be part of my issue, NORMALLY, Orion Commander has today off, hell normally he'd have the whole week off and the students would be back at school next week. So we shared the duties of cleaning the kitchen and some of the meal prep. It's just me today and yeah I wasn't feeling it until a little bit ago. I'm still not cooking dinner tonight, lol.

I find a glass of wine always makes cooking more fun...and the outcome more" interesting."

Target also carries Peet's coffee

Contains: Does Not Contain Any of the 8 Major Allergens

Mast cell reactions can also be caused by citric acid, oxalic acid, amongst a couple, and oxalates. I think for a lot of people with the condition oleic acid (sp?) is also a trigger.

Pretty much in the same mood here. Got mom and my sister buried last weekend. Brother from Seattle is still here, but don't want him at my house so we're doing a door-dash to my other brothers with dinner. Oldest son said they just aren't doing it this year either - they are doing take out pizza.

Friend from Greeley CO is coming down, so it will be him, my son, grandson and myself for dinner.

Got all the preps done today, tomorrow is turkey roasting day with chestnut oyster stuffing/dressing (in the crockpot), smashed gravy, rolls and a green salad.

Just not really feeling it this year and Christmas is going to be worse.

Im so sorry to hear about your mom & sister...

Still, I hope you have a happier thanksgiving and up coming year, ma’am.

That's funny! For all the years DH was alive and healthy he was a Lieutenant in the Volunteer Fire Dept. We would sit down to a holiday meal, birthday- it didn't matter what it was if we were celebrating something he'd raise his fork with the first bite on it and look down that big table at his brother, the Fire Chief, and his two boys with a couple of years in and and a couple of female VFD members and hold his breath.

Almost every time, the tones would go off, the table would blow up and everybody would get up to grab gear and git. It got to be funny after awhile. I was on duty with Crockpots of good things to keep them going, Water and gator Aide. And lots of prayer for all involved. We would have been very surprised if a family gathering WASN'T interrupted.

Not really feeling Thanksgiving here either. Yes, there are SOME things to be thankful for (so far none of us has got the crud, dear sister just had a successful operation and is recovering well), but the whole political thing has caused trouble in the family, and our dog (who has Cushing's) is not doing well.

Normally we would be visiting/feasting with our DD (who lives in another state), but none of us are traveling due to CoVid. A normal alternative to (anyone, either state) cooking would have been dinner out at a good restaurant, but ditto on CoVid.

DH doesn't want to do our feasts of former years, so we worked out a compromise meal (he didn't want to do anything special at ALL!): turkey breast (bleh, I prefer dark meat, but at least he will sous vide it), stuffing from pre-cut farmers' market bread crumbs (bleh, probably won't be up to our usual standards - we make a killer stuffing - but it will save a little bit of effort there), yams/apples/mandarins, cranberries, and some leftover pumpkin pie. I have any number of bottles of wine sitting around (I buy the wine and then never drink it - I'm not a big drinker) so I should go put one of them in the fridge to cool down. In the mood I'm in (constant fighting over politics with DH and sadness over our dog) I'm probably going to overdo that.

Happy Thanksgiving to the rest of you. Seriously.

Cranberry juice + tonic water + vodka over lots of ice, yummy!

My mom liked Fresca in her Vodka, dad you wouldn't let him near the stuff his mouth would run unchecked when drinking vodka.

Sounds like my dad! He’s 83 today and near the end...but he’s a handful normally...with no inhibitions? Oh Lord!

I’m not a drinker really...not that I’m against it mind you...but that cranberry + tonic + Vodka on ice does sound good! :D

First I would have to acknowledge my many blessings.

Many do not have the life I have been blessed with.

We always had a full Thanksgiving with all the fixings.

We usually had to split time between mine and DW's family which meant two Thanksgivings.

This has been the weirdest year. My mom got pretty sick, DW's dad almost died and we do not want to take a bug of any kind anywhere either of them.

We got some turkey slices from the deli and tatertots. Then we are going to put on some Hallmark movies where you already know how they end and we are going to just chill.

Oh, and the dogs told us they have to get their daily walk.

He bought a couple of bottles of moscato by accident I needed Chardonnay for a recipe, I’ll put them in the fridge tomorrow morning, thanks for the idea!

It is really good! Fill a pint ball jar with ice, add one third vodka, then one 5hird tonic water and top off with one third cranberry juice. It’s making gettin the dishes done a blast, Texas storage wars on the kitchen tv! And I mean fill that jar to 5he top with ice.

Cranberry sauce is done and is a ray of sunshine it tastes so good, waiting on 5he ice maker to kick out enough for boiled eggs, I use the 6-6-6 method with the instant pot. When OC gets home, after dinner, I’ll have him help me with 5he corn pudding/casserole it’s one of his super powers that and making gravy and white sauces.

Oh, Terrwyn, I’m so sorry! We have two Russian Blues and they are our babies. They are so special and have the most unique personalities. Russian Blues really bond with their humans in a way I’ve never experienced with any other cats. My heart goes out to you. Ours are 10 and 12 years old, and I’ll feel so blessed if ER can get another decade out of them.

My "trade secret" that I've passed on to my D, is to turn the Rockwell holiday requirements completely topsy-turvy. We do wacky things. Last year, I asked if she could manage the potatoes... which spurred a day long photo-journal, including video, of potatoes in diorama drama. This year, she's having one friend over - and everyone is dressing wacky black tie. I might make an appearance to deliver her a pie during the day.

My hubby died the day before Thanksgiving 5 years ago. I am also peopled out, coz my D is a real social butterfly and I shared my house with her & her boyfriend for a year, while her house was being built here. I am still thankful for our marriage, but it's also time to stop commemorating and merely remember - because I've moved on. I plan to stay in my fleece jammies all day, become one with the couch... and burn bandwidth bytes watching stuff on the tube. I'm making traditional dinner for one. (And lots of leftovers.)

New fella won't be much longer, before he's here full time. :D More gratitude.

But I just don't feel up to being "social" right now either. Crazy, silly, wacky MAYBE... but not everyone gets my weird sense of sick, twisted humor.
