The article (which I think is at least last January or the January before I forget which) is being found and circulated on twitter as if he said it yesterday. The problem is that no matter if the US really had anything to do with this or not, those comments are "out there" in the wild and going to be very hard for the White House "staff" to "walk back."

It's not an issue with crude oil pipelines. Don't know about gas though, my experience is limited to crude oil and refined product (diesel).

Russia is “extremely concerned” about the damage sustained by the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, the Kremlin said Tuesday.
Three offshore lines of the Russia-built Nord Stream gas pipeline system sustained "unprecedented" damage, leaking gas into the Baltic Sea, pipeline operator Nord Stream AG said in a statement carried by Russian state agencies Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said pressure in the gas pipeline has dropped significantly as a result of the three leaks and refused to rule out sabotage as a potential cause.
"Yesterday, information appeared both from Gazprom and from the operating company. This is very disturbing news. Indeed, we are talking about some destruction to the pipeline, it is not yet clear what kind,” Peskov said, according to the state-run TASS news agency.
The alleged damage to the 1,200-kilometer Nord Stream pipeline that carries gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea took place in the Danish economic zone and has sparked an investigation by Moscow, Peskov said.

The damage to the Nord Stream is the latest turn in an ongoing energy dispute that erupted between Russia and the West following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
Europe has accused Russia of weaponizing energy supplies in retaliation for sanctions, while Moscow blames Western sanctions and technical issues for supply disruptions.
Flows through the pipeline, which were previously down to just 20% of normal capacity from July, were halted at the end of August and have not yet been relaunched following a series of repairs declared by Moscow.
Peskov said any contact between the Kremlin and German officials would be made through the pipeline’s operating company and stressed the seriousness of the disruptions ahead of the long winter months.
"Of course, this is an issue related to the energy security of the entire continent," Peskov said.
Denmark's prime minister said it was "hard to imagine" that the three leaks detected on the Nord Stream pipelines were "accidental."
"It's an unusual situation, to have three leaks a distance from each other. That's why it's hard to imagine that it's accidental," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told Danish media during a visit to Poland.

And with three almost simultaneous leaks plausible deniability of it not being intentional flies out the window. I read a report that the damage is so severe it might take years to fix. Europe won’t survive in its current form if this is true. An intentional attack on pipelines like this is an act of war and they designed it to be so. They didn’t hide it but did it openly. It’s on now, it is not at some distant point into the future but here and now going into winter in the northern hemisphere.

US. Or threatening us or our assets overseas with nuclear blackmail to get some very serious concessions. With what Biden said about stopping Nord Stream, Putin can point to the US as the perpetrator of sabotage and proclaim it as an act of war. This lose of income can affect the Russian economy and may cause the Russians to rally around Putin.
Europe will certainly be furious if we were to be thought to be the cause of them not just being cold, but killing their economy if they need the fuel for their factories.
(I don't know how much it will affect either Russia or Europe as I've not been following this closely enough. I could just be full of ...... and gloom and doom this morning. )

Where is the incentive for either side to negotiate and end or at least effect a pause in the Ukraine war?
- Europe has lost any hope of getting it's Russian gas supply back for at least the near term, likely longer.
- Russia has lost any ability to break the sanctions and regain earning revenue with at least a few highly energy dependent European countries.
Losing room to negotiate can risk escalation.

Based on the above ("unprecedented damage" to 3 pipelines) and reports the "explosions" that damaged them were equal to a small "earthquake"--
I'm sure this thought has crossed other minds besides mine--
but what if it's discovered that a small "tactical" nuke (or nukes) damaged / destroyed those lines?
