ECON New Shortages - Sept Forward

Few items that seem to be harder to find right now ... stopped by the local HEB and things like name brand peanut butter (Jiff and Peter Pan) are gone, canned stewed tomato's are hard to find (plenty of sauce), canned fruits like pears or name brand peaches (lots of pineapple and mandarins), and mac and cheese cups.

What’s your general area? HEB has seemed to fare better than other chains so your post made me perk up. The closest largest city to me is San Antonio. I haven’t seen too many holes since this Spring.

No bacon to be found at ohio aldi yesterday, no head lettuce and no kidney beans. I guess people are making use of the last garden tomatoes for BLTs... and getting supplies for chili.

Forgot to add- I stopped into the walmart super center nearby, the mask Nazis guarding the door were gone! Still only one entrance and one exit, and one way signs still present.

I was just checking on Amazon to order the wet food I always get my cats now, since this food has helped them regain their health after this disastrous health experiences with Whiska's/Fancy Feast and my fave cat good just went up by .79 a pouch overnight!

At both Chewy and Amazon, same price.

Well, Sh*t!!!

I should have ordered last night, but nooooo... I had to wait til today.

This is another indication that pet food will be going up, so I'm off to order 20 boxes before they up that new price even higher.

And I'm going to check on their dry food now...

If no price hike on that yet, I best be ordering it today.

Just checked on the dry and it's still the same price as last May so I just ordered more bags.

I had this *feeling* this last week that I was going to be seeing pet food prices go up and it just happened faster than I thought! V

Grocery shopping last night with the boss. No canned tomatoes. Stuff like diced, whole etc. Still pasta sauce. Southern ME/NH.

interesting post - I have been looking for tuttoruso whole canned tomatoes for a cpl of weeks now - none to be found. as you said all of the other stuff was present. in fud lyin today I asked the grocery manager about it. he said they haven't been able to get any from the warehouse in several weeks. his reasoning was "difficulty getting raw materials from china to make the cans". didn't seem to make any sense to me as all the other stuff is in cans isn't it?

my thot is that whole tomatoes are going to government storage bc you can make the other stuff from the whole tomatoes but you CAN'T make the other stuff into whole tomatoes . . .

We are having more troubles getting prescription pet foods in again. Royal Canin and Hills Science Diet. More frequent backorders, though not as bad as the beginning rush in Mar/April.

When this happens with no obvious reason, price increases are usually soon to follow.

Good call Vessie to stock up now!!

That is not a good thing when you can't get your prescription pet food orders in!

I'll ask my friend who's the office manager at my vet's clinic to see what she's experiencing and let you know what she says.

I'm thinking that these frequent backorders are for a much different reason than the big rush by everyone back in March/April, if you get my drift.

I ordered more Pro Plan dry cat food from Amazon and luckily the price hasn't gone up, but I'm going to place a big order of the Weruva BFF wet cat food pouches, even though they've gone up to .79 per box of 12 pouches overnight. V

I'm wondering if at least a part of these shortages is from people shopping online, from home, shifting some of the stress in logistics.

Hmm. Down here we aren’t seeing this, yet.

Will keep eyes open, thanks for the heads up! We’re still busier than a one armed paper hanger, by the way. It’s crazy!

Sunday morning:
+ no diet Barq's root beer (made by Coke) - one of the store workers saw me looking and asked if he could help - when I told him what I needed he said that "Coke was having bottling problems"

+ no red horseradish - checked two stores - one none at all; the other had it but it was over a week expired - plenty of white horseradish - can't figure out why one but not the other

I am part of a large group buy of canning supplies with the local Master food preservers group. The person coordinating the buy uses her business account. In January we placed the order, got 1/3 of it it in late June. Normally we would get the order in four weeks. The primary contact said the rest of the order was finally cancelled by Newell the manufacturer and to not expect the ability to order until March to May 2021 if then.

I've been after hubby for weeks now to get new shoes. We went out shopping on Saturday. Marshalls had only the top two shelves of seven shelves of men's shoes size 12 and up with shoes of any sort. Several, I understood why they hadn't sold, like actually having pink with black and white flowers on them. But back to topic. He got one pair there. He finally believed me that there aren't many shoes out there. Drove him to several other stores and convinced him to buy a second pair since his current tennis shoes flap.

So, now there's a shoe shortage? :hof:I could barely find shoes to fit my feet, before. I was hoping to be able to buy a couple pair of new ones for this winter. Now, I'm not so sure.

I take HCQ for RA. Usually get it in 90 day supply. Last one was limited to a 30 day supply.

Harborfreight has no 10x10 or 10x17 portable sheds/garages in stock within 75 miles of me.

I wonder if it has started being rationed? I take it for SLE, and also always get a 90 day supply. I will be asking my Rheumatologist about it tomorrow when I go in for my appointment.

I'm putting this here, but I thought about doing it as a stand-alone post.

On Saturday, Muphy's Law hit our home in rural Ireland BOTH the washing machine and the dryer, bought at the same time, died together, on the same night.

So this morning, in the face of a new lockdown, to be announced this evening (and which no one has a clue what it will involve) I started trying to get new ones.

I was going neither for extremely (and stupidly expensive) or the dirt-cheap unknown brands.

It took me two local shops, both of which I have used for 25 years, to get the old man in the second one to be honest (the first one gave me what my husband calls "Orish BS" so it was impossible to know for certain what the problem really was, even with direct questions.

The old man (who did make a sale by the way) explained and confirmed:

There are no more washing machines, dryers, fridges, or freezers that will be on the shop floors or in the warehouses for the foreseeable future.

The full stop (as they say on this side of the water).

Now that said, this is IRELAND and SOME of this BREXIT and the "no-deal" situation since the Irish really never "got around" to updating their main "shipping" harbor beyond removing passenger ferries and putting up a custom's "hut" in the old parking lot.

But some of it, I confirmed with the elderly shop owner who is used to North Americans and how much distaste we have for "spin" is the fact that NOTHING is getting out of Asia (or very little) or as his shop assistant said:

"They said we'd have something in four or five weeks but they've been telling me this about the fridges and freezers for months and they just keep adding four or five weeks, when the stuff still isn't in."

I said: "translation, nothing is coming in from Asia or the factories correct?"

She replied: "you are right, that is the situation" (I could hear in her voice how she hated to say something straight forward which violates the usual Irish cultural protocols for "bad news", but she's used to me lol).

So anyway, I managed a second level "brand" of the dryer, with no timer and smaller than I wanted, and a pretty good washing machine (one of the last two in stock).

Sadly, if it is installed by us, we lose the warranty, so I've called the elderly electrician they suggested who of course, knows nothing about this and is calling the store.

Oh and the other shop, which DID have a couple of the machines I wanted to buy, kept repeating, "you know with COVID, I mean with COVID etc" which translated as:

We will no longer remove your old washer and dryer, nor will we unhook them or hook up your new ones, in fact we won't even take it around to the back door (where it is on the same level as our laundry hook up) because well, we are using COVID as an excuse to just "put them in front of the house."

I mentioned that the government had said specifically that Plumbers, electricians, and essential workmen COULD come into private homes for the purposes of repair and installation and she just kept repeating:

"But it wouldn't be safe, I mean COVID COVID COVID."

I'm afraid I kind of lost it, said: "I hate to be the blunt American here but you are telling me you will sell me these high-end items for which I have my debit card to order the right here, but you are using COVID as an excuse to dump then in the front yard in the rain?"

I don't think I will shop at that shop much anymore, except to keep using their old guy who repairs the appliances out of warranty, but I can get his number and call him directly.

Honestly, the problem wasn't so many things they couldn't help, as a change in policy by the insurance companies that everything must be installed by a licensed professional, and they don't know anyone who will do that work right now; as the BS and using COVID as an excuse with no explanation.
