Plantman did all the right things (except maybe not insisting on some bloodwork). A high fever can be fatal in teenagers and adults (and is concerning even in small children), so it must be brought down. There are always risks with inseds, but medicine is often about hedging the bets and choosing acceptable risks.

At least make sure they give him antibiotics, Yes, those are overused these days, but this is the type of situation where it is better safe than sorry. Also, if the fever goes down quickly, you know it is bacterial of some sort. If not, it is viral, and other steps may be needed (or a different antibiotic is needed).

It's great that he's eating and drinking, but at his age, both recovery and crashes can happen quickly. I know you will keep an eye on him.

It is surprising no bloodwork was done. Ditto urinalysis. If symptoms continue, you might want to request both. Also, be sure to ask for hard copies of any tests done on your son. These days, a papertrail in your own hands is a must. Meanwhile, continuing to uplift prayers for both a diagnosis and a speedy recovery. A sick child of any age is worrisome.

***LAST UPDATE***

After fighting the temp swings which were pretty wild all day yesterday, he was put into bed around 10PM. An hour later I went in to check on him and he was delirious. I asked him if he knew where he was, and where he was. Said something about being on the beach. (We had just watched Avatar 2) After about 20 minutes his mind kicked back into gear and he was able to crack a joke. I did call our local consulting nurse and was told that some people get delirious with fevers over 103F. News to me. The experience is a little frightening because you are dealing with a big person now, rather than a toddler or a little kid. Later, it was my turn to check on the boy at around 2AM and I walked to his room and turned on the light. There he was, shirtless standing in the doorway looking at me with zero emotion. (major freak-out in my brain) I said, woah! You scared me! He just looked at me, through me, no emotion. I asked him a couple of questions and no response just staring. I figured he was just sleep walking and exhausted, so I gently coaxed him back into bed. Laying down he shook a little but I continued calming him with fingers through his hair and softing his back. I quickly gave up asking him any questions as there was no response. Didn't register. It was a good hour till the twitches and going from eyes closed to wide open settled into deep breathing. It was done, his fever gone.

Saw him in the morning where he proudly said his fever was gone but that he was super tired. I have no idea what he had, but I have no doubt it was a miracle, fevers like that don't happen for nothing.

Again thanks to everyone who lent a prayer or a word of advice to a stranger in need. May you have 10x's blessings in return, I've asked!

The body is amazing and super efficient!

Fevers are the bodies way of burning out disease. I would argue; only use Tylenol to keep the fever out of "bake the brain" range so the body can do its thing.

The tired feeling is because of the energy output of baking off whatever he had.

The laws of thermodynamics and thus the saying of "starve a cold, feed a fever".

Bone broth and fluids should help.

WOW!! What a spooky experience. I would really wonder what his blood tests showed. Even if all the numbers are within the "Limits" shifts of the different types of cells and maturity can tell you a lot. PRAYERS that this event is over and total healing is taking place. Scary not knowing just what the hell was going on!! All the best to you and yours!!

Did they ever DO any bloodwork? I'm sorry, but in most hospitals that would have been the FIRST thing ordered! I really hope once he's discharged you'll take him to your family doctor and have HIM do the bloodwork that the hospital doctors (inexplicably) refused to do.

We had that hand, foot, and mouth go through our house a good 2 months ago. Started with crazy high fevers. Had my granddaughter in the hospital with seizures. Her mother has a seizure disorder so they ran a bunch of tests. Had no idea till days later she developed a rash in her throat. Only other symptom they showed. It went through all of us then on to the people at work.
You would think this was just a kid thing, but no. Adults were getting it just as bad as the kids. Only one, out of about 20 that I know who had it actually showed all the symptoms. I thought it was something else because no one else really had any of the rashes. One month later, we all got COVID. Lot of weird viruses going around, but that was the first thing I thought of when I read about the fever. Hope he stays well.
