Michigan driver arrested after pulling 'Dukes of Hazzard' stunt over Detroit bridge

A Michigan man was arrested Wednesday night after apparently jumping a Detroit drawbridge in "Dukes of Hazzard" fashion, according to multiple reports.

The Allen Park driver, 26, was behind the wheel of a Dodge sedan when he accelerated and attempted to cross the Fort Street bascule bridge around 7 p.m. on Wednesday -- as it was rising.

“I looked, I said, ‘No he ain’t,’” drawbridge operator Andre Locke told Detroit's WDIV-TV. “Over he went, blew out all four of his tires, and then he crashed into the other gate."

Detroit police mentioned the incident as something from "Dukes of Hazzard" when dispatching the call, while Locke said it was more like the 1980s comedy "The Blues Brothers," according to the station.

Authorities said the driver managed to get to the other side successfully before he "allegedly damaged the safety gates" and his own tires, The Detroit News reported. He was uninjured following the jump and it's not clear why he attempted it.

The unidentified man was later arrested in southwest Detroit on suspicion of malicious destruction of property over $1,000, police said. He was taken to the Detroit Detention Center pending charges, according to the paper.

“The Dukes of Hazzard” television show, which ran from 1979 until 1985, took place in fictional Hazzard County, Ga.

The series told the adventures of two cousins, Luke and Bo Duke. Their vehicle, nicknamed the General Lee, was famously seen jumping over a police vehicle in the opening credits.

and he would have got away with it too, if it wasn't for those meddling spikes and gates.

if we could somehow figure out how to start a protest on the bridge...

Big fan here. That was really an awesome movie. Especially, all the bands and other singers. Penguin was awesome!

On TB every waking moment
Everyone is thinking of jumping bridges, creeks and buildings, my thoughts went in a different
direction...........
I have on at least one occasion seen a comely young maiden wearing such a costume at church. She may have prayed fervently but some of us had problems concentrating on Scripture. It was not the week that Jezebel made the main gospel

It’s a complete new bridge 4 years old or so. Heaviest in the world draw bridge. It doesn’t crack in the middle where two half’s go up. The whole bridge is hinged at on end and goes up like opening a book cover. Nothing but air on the other side.

No wonder he blew all four tires. I’d bet that’s not all that got broken.

Fort Street Bridge | Hardesty & Hanover

Fort Street Bridge
The Fort Street Bridge has been an important connection over the Rouge River since the 1920s. The existing bridge was built in 1922 as a result of the dredging and enlargement of the Rouge River for the Ford River Rouge Plant. By the early years of the 21st century, the existing bascule bridge was nearing the end of its useful life and required replacement. Michigan DOT engaged H&H to study alternatives and then take the most feasible option through final design.

There were several critical goals for the new bridge, for which H&H was the lead design firm. It had to provide a 135-foot navigation channel, accommodate five traffic lanes and two pedestrian/bikeways, minimize ROW impacts, avoid tunnels and existing subpiers, and provide a striking visual enhancement to the community.

The new Fort Street Bridge is the heaviest bascule leaf in the world at 8.2 million pounds and the second largest by deck area at over 15,000 square feet. The design, which had to account for obstructions in the footprint of the new bascule pier, utilizes a single-leaf bascule with an overhead counterweight, a first on the MDOT system. Due to the efficient rolling-lift design, it requires minimal power to operate the bascule span under normal conditions. However, the two 150-HP motors will move the bascule span during high wind and heavy ice conditions. Stringers, floorbeams, and two 13-foot deep pony trusses support the steel grid-reinforced concrete deck.

The bridge is a vital part of an overall Fort-Rouge Gateway Project that focuses on historic heritage and on pedestrian and bicycle-friendly improvements. The Governor’s Michigan Showcase Trail (also known as the Iron Belle Trail and the North Country Trail runs from Belle Isle to Wisconsin), Underground Railroad Bicycle Route (which goes from Mobile, Alabama to Ontario), and the United States Bicycle Route System will all utilize the bridge.

"Blues Brothers" is one of my Top Ten all time favorite movies.

I grew up in or have been to almost every place in the movie. Catholic grade school on the Near West side.

You ain't been Old School Chicago until you have been to Maxwell Street.

I've always wanted to do that. I struggle when lawn mowing trailers are in the upright position. I just wanna GO FOR IT! Don't know why. Used to scare the kids to pieces because I would accelerate and yell, "I'm going for it!" Would veer off at the last second.HAHAHA!

How’s that for obscure trivia?
