I'm south of you Leska....and my biggest fear is the freezing temps coming tonight and tomorrow...the roads will be skating rinks as a result.

...meanwhile in Seattle we haven't seen any of the snow. Just the wind from up north whipping through over last night. If we get any moisture at all this week it will be snow though.

Portland is a beautiful city, and except for the downtown core, most of it is on steep hills-and all the bridges, so no wonder it comes to a stop. This snow that comes from the Pacific ocean is very slippery wet stuff, not like the wonderful powder in the mountains. DD is right about deliveries probably not being made because of these factors even after the snow stops for a day or two.

It would be nice DD to have some pics of snowy Portland streets without any traffic though.

I remember that Dennis. Didn't even slow my folks up but it sure put a crimp in some peoples plans for Christmas that year.

My brother in Montana sent me this last week when it was just a little bit of snow and some ice. You'll notice that despite the snark which picture has actual vehicles out and about, though.

We got another inch of "partly cloudy" last evening and it has been raining ice crystals off the tree in the sunlight this morning. If I wasn't working, would be out trying to get good pics of it.

Cascadia, Oregon City is inland a bit, but you probably have neighbors and friends who take the weather in stride. Are the coastal cities still being inundated as well? They might be running out of peanut butter and milquetoast.

Well, Portland is in for it now. It seems one of the MAX trains DERAILED at the Rose Quarter station. This is the station just over the Steel Bridge headed East towards Gresham. It will delay the entire public transport system.

BY THE WAY THE CURRENT TEMP IS 14, REPEAT 14 F. The wind chill puts us below zero I think. Yep, the coldest ever low temp was 6 below in 1950. The low was 12 tonight. I wonder if we are going to find more dead Homeless in a few days.
We have until Monday for the snow to thaw. After that, we are likely looking at major flooding as the snow melt is added to the rain. WE are also going to deal with one half of all water pipes breaking once they thaw. <G>

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A MAX train has derailed at the Rose Quarter, TriMet announced just after 5 a.m.

The agency said to expect major delays and to find another way to commute to work. There were no reported injuries. It's not know how many passengers were on the train.

The cars remained upright. TriMet said the train was switching from the Blue to Yellow line when it derailed on tracks used sparingly late at night and early in the morning.

Crews were using a number of large blow torches to melt the ice in the rails. A special jack, or tow train may be used to get

1996 re-do starting Tuesday. Very warm Pineapple Express coming in with lots of rain. The last time this happened the flood levels were astronomical.

This morning, 14 degrees on my deck, hard ice everywhere. School closed again, has been all week, and Monday is a holiday. So living across the street from a school, I'll be seeing kids through June.

The ice is so hard and it is so cold, nobody out there playing anymore. It will be interesting when the flooding starts simultaneously with all the broken pipes.

Oh, I remember the "floods of 96," very well indeed. The combination of the snow melt combined with the heavy rains did the trick. Downtown Portland flooded all the way up to 1st Ave. I think the measure stick on the bridge showed at around 35 to 40 feet. The Salmon Street fountain flooded also.

They had people putting up those steel barriers along the Waterfront. In fact, there is a ground plague where the Marxist Mayor Vera Katz actually called out the Militia to help put up the flood barriers. I always get a kick out of that.

Yep, the real S$%%% storm won't start until Tuesday or later.

If it does melt all our snow it still won't be as bad as 96, We don't have half the snow we had then. lol

Mayor Katz appointed me and my (ex) husband to the city's Y2K team. Only civilians on it. She was part of our pilot NET project. The founder, Rachael Jacky, ended up running Homeland Security CERT, top person. We had a storage space on the Willamette in West Linn and were down at it watching the river rise fast. We immediately went uphill and rented the 1st apt in our life, then evacuated. On trip full of furniture saw LO mayor standing staring at river, told her to get her ass in gear and call up CERT and start sandbagging, that the river would soon overflow banks and dams. Then called Vera Katz and told her same thing. She responded fast and called up NET and everybody willing and able to work on the wall. It pays to be alert to weather! I really liked Vera Katz. She listened, she considered all angles. We have letter from her thanking us :-) These days I'm not involved in anything, just watch things. History repeats itself. This time the geoengineers will likely stop that much rain, but they didn't stop the snow. I'm hoping Trump axes the whole geoengineering progam and our skies turn blue and the rain returns. Just not next week, lol

We have more snow and ice now than 1996. I remember it vividly, including walking the streets before the ice melted. More now.

I was in the heart of the flood of '96. President Clinton came and addressed the issue 4 houses down from mine in the middle of the street where we had been hit with 5+ ft of water in some homes. I lost 3/4 of what I owned including my car. I remember well the Lewis River rising up and over the banks. One of the guys working at the dam was home and packing at 9am knowing what was coming. We were told to get our stuff and get out hours before it was made known to the public.

Glad I moved to Arizona. Sorry, but that liberal utopia can freeze itself to death for all I care.

Wish I could kayak down the streets but whenever it rains more than 1" the sewer system overflows into the rivers despite $$$Billions$$$ spent to fix the problem. Raw sewage mixed with mud, debris, garbage and pollution. Makes a huge churning revolting dangerous mess.

We're in for it next week. Gonna be stuck with subfreezing bitter cold, huge jagged mounds of ice everywhere, and then when it finally starts warming up, we'll get freezing rain then torrential warm rain and massive floods. I just want to be able to safely walk my dogs. Getting impossible. Stir crazy, depressed and pissed. Ready to add to those imaginary golden showers in protest. I mean next week is also the Inauguration and I'd like to just be happy Trump won instead of feeling anxiety that any number of insane radical morons are trying to make sure he does not become President. I don't want to be devastated, have my hope crushed and see my country descend into civil war then international war.

Next week's Mega Flood is going to be bad. National Guard already on standby. Force of water could demolish our transportation system with all its bridges, over and under passes, culverts, and iffy drainage system. And after days of torrential rains, flooding and landslide, after the power has gone out, temps return to sub freezing.

Beam me out now!

Where did you hear that the NG is being called out? Is that for the Portland area or the Willamette Valley?

I'm thankful that I live on a creek that is a tributary of the Molalla River (10 miles south of Cascadians)....we didn't get much snow out here...about 6 inches...substantially less than folks closer to/or in Portland have gotten.

The 96 flood came within a few feet of my house, or so I am told.

Something to consider is that the drains may be clogged with snow and ice, leaving the melt water to make its way to the lowest elevation by surface routes. Three of the four drains I checked in my apartment complex are packed solid with snow and ice, although it's anyone's guess whether that snow and ice extend deeper than the surface grates.
