WEATHER MASSIVE SNOW STORM IN PORTLAND, OREGON 1-11-2017

We now have nearly 7 inches of Snow in downtown Portland, with another 3 inches possible by 1 pm this afternoon. Portland is totally shut down, nothing is moving. THANK GOD I AM A PREPPER, DENNIS.
After it stops snowing, we will have two to three days of 30 F highs, and 18 to 22 F lows, which is damn cold for Portland. We are also likely to see power outages, travel chaos and the economy essentially shut down for the next two to four days.

Yep, I am going out in a bit to do a recon. The term Snowflake can be taken literally today in Portland!!!!! :shkr:

Getting hammered 40 miles north of you too. We still had a lot on the ground from the last storm. Sucks.

SW WA here have 7 inches on the ground here and hadn't quite cleared out from the last storm either.

If you locals can help....I cant get info On the Portland/Cavaliers game for tonight that my son has tickets for. We cant get there at this point so I am hoping they cancel the game but last I heard they had flown the Trailblazers to Seattle to try to get them home for the game. Phone lines @ Moda Center aren't being answered

The Oregonian (Portland's biggest newspaper) is saying that four people have died from exposure in the last few weeks. It's not especially unusual for the PNW to get a cold weather event (or very hot weather), but from my experience here it's rare for it to last long (more than two weeks) and I don't recall the locals starting a weather-related bodycount before. While other places would laugh at it, this cold weather and snow/ice is something very unusual for the PNW (minus the mountains, of course).

The link is here to NBA cancelled games

http://www.wettpoint.com/schedules/postponed.html

It shows the Portland Trailblazer game cancelled, but gives the date as the 12th and not the 11th today. I seriously doubt they will play tonight. EVERYTHING IS SHUT DOWN IN PORTLAND: SCHOOLS, ROADS, STORES ETC ETC

The traffic downtown is nearly non existant. I did see a few cars. Everybody is staying home who can. Tri Met is on Snow schedule, if they are running the routes at all.
The roads are passable if you have chains. Studded snow tires are illegal in Oregon I think.

So far, electricity is still going downtown, traffic is moving more or less, but pretty much every thing is shut down, including the library.

The conditions on the major freeways are bad from what the media is saying. The burbs always get hammered, we have underground power lines in downtown. I haven't lost power in the 23 years I have lived downtown. It is always the burbs that lose power.

The Portland Metro Area is essentially on full shutdown mode. Nobody is moving if they don't have to. Major business is either shut down completely or at minimal function. Even the coffee shops are closed downtown, except for the Pioneer Square Starbucks anyway. It has to be SNOWMAGEDON for the coffee shops to close!!!

This too shall pass.
Sounds like Portland is getting what we were supposed to get last night (Klamath County, southern Oregon on the east side of the mountains). I am very thankful that we didn't get it, as we just got plowed out from the unexpected two foot snowfall we got last week (a friend's husband came over yesterday with his tractor and cleaned out not only our driveway, but the unplowed dirt road we live on). We haven't left the property for over a week -- couldn't get out.

Yeah, nobody really cares about the four dead Homeless types. The powers that be make the right noises, but they are reaping what they have sown. It is revealed dogma here in Portland that you can't mess with what I call the "homeless cult." TPTP have voided every single law that could possibly be used to deal with the large numbers of drunken, drug abusing, mentally ill losers we have living downtown now. It is illegal for the police to directly intervene no matter how bad the situation gets. They may send them to the detox center if they are falling down drunk, or they may not. They will not stage a mental health intervention, even if the person is clearly delusional, talking out load, screaming at people, etc unless they become a "threat." This guarantees the only response options are to shoot them or ignore them.

These four people chose to live outside in long term bitterly cold weather. The system "helped" them by ignoring them. The liberals are proud of this even if they are now left with dead, frozen bodies as a result.

Yep, I fully expect that in a week or two, once the weather warms up, we will start to find bodies in the various hiding places the Homeless usually use.

F$%%% liberal hypocrites.

Only got a skiff this morning, but that is on top of almost three feet of cascade concrete. Lane county does a horrible job of keeping the county roads plowed. Don't know if is because they are understaffed for the amount of roads to be cleared or what, but six inches of slush freezing, ruts and all makes for bumpy and slippery driving.

The ice storm in December makes power outages a little less likely this time around, and only a few hours if it does happen.

Walked my 2 Newfs each 2 miles around the neighborhood last night in a blizzard, Oregon City south of Portland. We got about 4". 14" in some parts of the metro area. Problem is all the trees breaking snapping bending and crashing. It was beautiful and magical last night before the weight got so heavy.

Can walk thru snow and ice with Yaktrax and Icetrekkers, slip-on traction cleats over shoes. Makes getting out in this easy. Hoping our power stays on. Still snowing, has been since yesterday afternoon.

This winter has been unusual not only for the cold but the multiple snow and ice storms. Here we go again! And yes, it's nothing compared to other parts of the country, but it completely shuts Portland down.

The end times are here.
Seven inches of snow is big news in Portland. I'm 75 miles east of Portland and we have around FOUR FEET of snow. Everything has come to a stop. Our porch roof needs to get cleaned off asap or the weight of the snow could cause it to collapse. It's a real mess here!!

Thank you DD...common sense of course told me they wouldn't play but I couldn't get a confirmation and they said they were still trying to fly the players home from Seattle for the game. Appreciate the help! :)

The roads are passable if you have chains. Studded snow tires are illegal in Oregon I think.

Tire chains are at the moment REQUIRED for vehicles travelling in Portland. If they catch you without today (and maybe over the next few days, considering it's STILL snowing here in Gresham) you may get a ticket. As for studded snow tires, they're very definitely legal in Oregon but only within a restricted time period (which can be extended by government dictate as needed). It's another ticket if you still run with studded tires outside the officially blessed time period, regardless of whether where you're coming from or going to still has snow. One of the great things about the PNW is that you can go from beach to tall mountain to high desert (and everything in between) in just a couple of hours, but it can make it hard to cover all the contingencies.

Doesn't look that bad to me, but we're used to it here:

Snowing for hours, even though the weather "report" said it was "overcast" through the first hours we saw of this. Luckily, not so much per hour. Digging out the decks again, cause the snow is getting heavy and deep in spots.

Haven't seen a winter like this in years. Luckily, we are a bit more able to cope, the snowplow comes by twice a day on school days. Still, plowing out the driveway, etc. is taking way too much of DH's time.

brrr!

Sorry, Mz Kitty, but this is SNOWAGEDDON IN PORTLAND, MOSTLY BECAUSE WE ARE SNOW WIMPS!!!!

It is official Snowageddeon because the MAX LINE SHUT DOWN. They are using buses to shuttle people from the Rose Quarter, next to the Moda/Trailblazer stadium, through downtown, and maybe out to Hillsboro.

Shutting down the MAX lines in Portland is the equivalent of shutting down the New York City Subway, or the BART lines in San Francisco.

Yep, NOBODY IS MOVING IN THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA.

Now that's a big to do! Not this nonsense 7-10 inches and that's the reason to be a prepper! 7-10 inches merely slows down the commute where I'm @ in the N/E!

Obviously elevation makes a difference, and 7-12 inches doesn't sound like a big deal when you get it on a regular basis..which we don't. Its just like seeing sunlovers from warmer states come here to the PNW & drive the rainy freeway at 50 with white knuckles & mildew before our eyes while visiting

Look, this is Portland we are dealing with here.

Here we go: Portland General Electric has 30,000 customers without power.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- How much snow fell where you live?

Tuesday, January 10 was the snowiest calendar day since 2008, according to the National Weather Service. Once the final tally is released, it could be the biggest one-day snow event in 27 years.

Snow was still falling Wednesday morning, with another couple of inches expected before it stops completely.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said the most snow fell in the West Hills of Portland, with 14.5 inches measured at NW Cornell Road. A few other areas recorded a full foot of snow: Vancouver at Northwest/Hazel Dell, North Portland at University of Portland, and Banks.

WOW! The good news is SNOWAGEDDEON is coming to an end. It is 12:15pm PST and we will only get flurries from now on. However, the local media is saying we got, HERE IN DOWNTOWN, a total of 15 INCHES OF SNOW. This is why Portland is not functional at this point. Further, we are looking at two to three additional days of 30 to 32 F Highs and 15 to 20 F lows. This snow isn't going to melt for the next several days.

Like I said, the SHEEPLE ARE SCREWED since we know they go into total "we are all going to starve" within 25 minutes of any disruption of the SHEEPLE LIFESTYLE.

Yep, we are going to start seeing those empty storeshelves, like with Hurricanes, pretty fast.

Doomer Doug, well I will be kicked back, in my heated apartment, online, or watching a DVD. I may watch "American Sniper" again, or just read, or stay online.

Seriously, the SHEEPLE ARE GOING TO BE FREAKING OUT BY NOW. I am predicting the Pop Tart Crisis is about to begin!!!

They are now saying 27 years, but I think that isn't correct. I have lived in Portland since 1980, some 36 years, and I don't remember EVER getting 15 inches of Snow in Downtown. The most I personally remember is about 4 to 6 inches a few years ago, 2008 around Christmas.

It really is amazing to be walking around downtown. There is virtually NO TRAFFIC. The noise level is near silent. the MAX lines are shutdown. A few stores are open, like the Target and the Rite Aid, but I don't see how they are going to get the trucks in over the next 48 hours. The shelves are already thinning out, of bread, milk, beer the usual stuff.

Yep, 30,000 PGE customers without power is a lot relative to the entire metro area.

WE have no schools, no government buildings, few business' are open: everything downtown is pretty much shut down. It is strange to not hear the MAX trains every 20 minutes or so.

It is going to take us another 3 days to dig out of this mess. On Monday or Tuesday it will be 50 and raining, which will feel like Columbia in South America.

Now, for those of you who live in Buffalo or Cleveland, I don't want to hear any comments about whiny snow brats. he he he I realize 15 inches of snow to you guys is like one inch of rain is to us. You should accept that modern life has now collapsed in Portland for the next two or three days! Doomer Porn!!!!

Portland OR is THE WORST place to drive when it snows. No one knows how, they freak out at just a skiff of the stuff, and there are lots of hills and bridges. It's a miserable place to drive on a good day. Years ago, we drove from Bend, OR where there was a blizzard in progress, to Seattle, which took us over a pass, and the only place that drivers freaked out was Portland. Semis jackknifed, cars southbound facing northbound, ditches full of SUVs. Don't underestimate the idiocy that is Portland.

No negative comments from me. I'm interested in hearing how the Special Snowflakes fare, especially in a power outage. Coffee houses shut down? Wow. That's major.

Best to take I-205 instead of going on I-5 through Portland.

I would rather drive a nail through my tongue than to drive right through Portland so I always take 205 (which can be bad too but not as bad). V

I'm not sure why the KGW weather people are saying 15 inches in downtown Portland. My little recon ended up at Alder and Broadway. I would say the snow on top of the paper boxes etc looked to be a minimum of six inches, maybe eight, and possibly nine or ten. I never had more than two cars in sight at any point. The MAX is still shut down. People are walking around a bit, but nothing compared to a "normal" Portland day, as if you can use the term normal and Portland in the same sentence.

The Snowflakes aren't doing to bad on foot. Pioneer Square looks very nice. They took the Holiday/Christmas tree down the other day. The tree and the snow would be a nice picture. I think the 15 inches must be up above 1,000 feet in the west hills towards Beaverton and Hillsboro.

The snow has stopped completely the last hour or so. It is going to get into the teens and twenties tonight. This means the morning commute will be over frozen/ice/snow pavement. If you have a death wish, Pinecone you can try driving in that. he he he

We had 17" in Oregon City on 12/23/2008. Don't remember if that was a one day accumulation or several. But my roof almost collapsed and I remember it vividly, also posted a thread about it here.

Glad snowing has stopped here, have too many trees bent to the ground, not sure we can save all of them.

I avoid Portland like the plague on the best of days, DD, but thanks for the invitation for an adventure! Yeah, we like 205 better, too, Vessie. I must admit, I'd rather do I-5 through Portland than I-84 through the gorge. It's the other place the driving crazies hang out, corralled with semis, cliffs, curves and rivers. Oh, and wind, rain, sunshine/shadow. Ice and snow. Never.

Talked to a friend in Vancouver who lives right at SR500 & I-5 and she has 12 inches.
I am about 30 miles North of there and have 7 inches. I think we are done here too so now we just wait for the thaw!

Just days before oblablah got in...and today, just days before oblablah exits. Coincidence?

Anyway, welcome to my world, sort of. We've had glorious sun both yesterday and today, clear blue skies that actually look like they portend spring, but the low temps tell the truth-still frigid weather. I'm watching the ice forming on the inside of my east window now that the sun isn't hitting it, sunny winter days are gorgeous but damn cold. Not a cloud in the sky, 15F with a low of -1F. Tomorrow's forecast has a picture of an igloo (a first for Weatherbug), 14F for a high and 1F for a low, Friday, 15F high, 5F low then Saturday we get a cloud and grand basking weather; 18F high and 11F low. In a week, they say we'll be in the 40s so I imagine Portland and other western areas will be knee deep in slush and muck.
