With more people around, more could get done without involving each and every person on every single part. With the arrival of the retrieval team, only some of the group had a part to play.

Andrea was still watching the radio.

Sabine was working on Zed, taking medical turn over from Angelique.

Garen was finalizing his preps for this evening’s pick up.

Jesse was in taking care of Paige, who was starting to be a bit more alive.

Heidi and Allyson were resetting gear and refueling vehicles in case they were needed.

Bekka and Doug were working with Emilia and Angelique after she was done with Sabine. Their job was cataloging all the information from the trip, making notes on the giant map and capturing details before they were forgotten.

“And I kept the dosing of Ketamine going pretty heavy to counteract all the jostling getting him to the extract site.” Angelique was ripping through the details in her mind, searching for any tidbits she may have forgotten in her medical treatment.

Sabine was impressed with the care, the techniques and the preciseness of Angelique in her medical treatment, including her turnover report. She knew many a corpsman with years of experience who should be embarrassed at how poorly they measure up to this young girl.

To set a misaligned bone, in the field, in the dark, by yourself? A daunting task. It is hard to believe this was Angelique’s first real patient contact. This was absolutely remarkable. This girl is top notch and her training was fantastic. It was going to be interesting here.

If Emilia was half the student Angelique was, she would have been top of her class at any Paramedic program in the real world. She had to get with Garen and see what they needed to learn next. She had four e-readers full of medical books to work from.
She knew she couldn’t do it all, especially with Andrea’s baby coming before the year was done, along with her own. Not to mention the situation with Paige.

Three young energetic medic students with Heidi, Emilia and Angelique. With these, she, along with Garen and Doug, could have one hell of a small emergency clinic and hospital.

Sabine thought about this as Angelique left to update Bekka.

Allyson and Heidi came into the workshop where Emilia was finishing with Angelique’s information dump.

“Hey Mom, Allyson. I know you guys have a road report for me to input. The list of questions is over on the table if you want to jot stuff down while I load up Angelique’s.” Emilia said as she barely looked up from the laptop they were storing stuff in.
“Shoot! You have this down to a science. Next we will have a NOTAM’s roster, guardmount and rollcall before long.” Heidi said good-naturedly.

Emilia looked up from her work.

“You don’t know the half of it, Mom. Bekka has a whole list of the stuff we are supposed to have you fill out, and Garen added another list of things to be on the lookout for and to make note of. He told me soon we will start sweeping farther out looking for stuff,”

Allyson was shaking her head as she worked through the post-incident checklist. She could see Bekka’s theoretical maniacal planning fingerprints on it.

Moments later Emilia finished her typing and looked up.

“Hey, mom, what do you think about what Angelique did?”

“Setting Zed’s leg in the field and getting him out?” Heidi was confused. It didn’t sound that impressive. What did she miss?

“Yeah!” Emilia was on her feet now all energetic. “I checked her map coordinates. She carried him on her back like eight miles through the hills in the dark to get him out! ****ing Badass!”

Heidi and Allyson were stunned speechless. Angelique said nothing of this to them in the truck. All she told them was she hooked him up in a walking splint after setting the leg so she could help him get to the pick-up point.

Allyson didn’t know what to think.

Heidi wasn’t sure if she could do it herself. It wasn’t an endurance question with her, it was the ganglyness of Zed and how much longer and taller he was and how he would catch on every bush and tree limb and branch and…….Bubblegum?

Emilia saw her mother’s eyes glaze over. She knew her mom was deep in though and not here right now.

I hope they are including some intense plans for the immediate future in securing seed, starting soil, where they going to plant, getting seedlings started, somewhere to keep them warm w/ some light, etc, etc.. all the medical knowledge and military training won't do much if they end up hungry, unless they are going to go the route of taking what they need (which I doubt). But they can't even wait a year to get established before starting to grow everything they can. In fact, they are already behind the 8ball in terms of grains, because many of those (along with garlic) are typically planted in the fall.

they just brought a family of professional farmers, complete with seed and light machine to assist in planting and put them at a house with infrastructure and fields. Karl and Isadora and family are working that issue, be assured.

scrounge and barter would come into play as well. This group has the ability to fix machinery and people. They also have a large amount of excess firearms beyond their need. A lot of their skills and knowledge will also aid in hunter/gatherer to augment.

I'm sorry, I don't understand " They also have a large amount of excess firearms beyond their need ". That line just doesn't track for me.

they have all the ones turned in at the stadium, plus’s all the odds and ends picked up from the bad guys at the city, the ranger compound, and the guys surrounding Karl’s farm. And Paige brought quite enough plus spares, and the ones from the Training Center that fleshed out Garen and Bekka’s groups, and so on and so forth.

not saying they are trading away the good stuff

All the frantic post arrival tasks were done. Everyone was breaking out to unwind and reset themselves. Emilia came into the kitchen area, finding her mother rummaging around in one of the cupboards.

“What are you looking for, Mom?”

“A couple of glasses. Aha!” Heidi exclaimed as she turned around.

“What for?” Emilia asked even as Heidi held up a pair of glasses in her hand.

“A little defusing project. Can you find Angelique and have her join be at the hot tub, then hang the ‘Do not Disturb’ sign out?”

“Sure thing, Mom, but what’s going on?”

“Looking to help something, that is all.” Heidi said, absently fingering the medallion around her neck.

As Heidi walked down the hall, Emilia saw the bottle in her other hand.

Angelique came into the hot tub greenhouse. She was worn out and hadn’t thought about the hot tub. It was a great idea and she knew it could help her sleep. The part she was confused by was Heidi wanting her to join her in the tub. She knew in many ways Heidi was a fairly private person.

“Come on in, the water’s great and you damn sure earned it!” Heidi said from the water.

“I appreciate you reminding me of this, but….” Angelique said as she quickly slipped into the water. The heat took her breath away and melted some of the fatigue from her bones.

“I wanted to talk to you away from everyone. You just did something and went through something that in many ways will be a benchmark others will try to define you with. Part of this is because you just did something damn near impossible for anyone else here.”

Angelique hadn’t thought of it like that. She also hadn’t heard this tone from Heidi before. It was sad.

“Bullshit! You could have done it! Kara could have done it!” Angelique shot back.

“Could I have carried Zed that far? Yeah, I probably could, and left a trail big enough to lead two blind guys right to the pick-up point. Kara, maybe, but she wouldn’t have let you try to lead them away like she could. Either way, it would have led to at least ten people being killed. You saved at least ten lives last night with what you did.”

Angelique didn’t know what to say. Heidi continued.

“Unless all of us die tonight, what you did will become a story and a legend that will follow you for most of your adult life. This is in addition to your whole long solo hike a couple of months ago at the outset of your ordeal.”

Heidi paused while she took a sip from the glass in her hand.

“Your father is very proud of you. He was before you went on this mission, and now he is so proud he could pop. Part of what you did was what he has dedicated his life to, going into the wilderness and rescuing the wounded. He doesn’t realize all the rest of what you did. I do. This wasn’t a rescue, this was combat survival.“

“You are now invincible, ten feet tall and bulletproof to Emilia, who idolized you before and now, it’s off the scale.”

“Idolize me? Why?” This didn’t make sense to Angelique.

“She wants to be like you like you idolize Kara and Allyson. She doesn’t understand what you went through to do what you did. I’m not going to ask you how you did it. I know you don’t know how you did it. I didn’t when I did some of the things I’ve done.”

Heidi handed the second glass to Angelique. Half full of a brown liquid, Angelique took a tentative sip as Heidi kept talking.

“I was about your age when I did something that people used to define me with for years, hell even to this day, then, about five years later, I did something else, more in line with what you did. That second thing? I spent almost four hours doing CPR in the back of a moving HMMWV under fire. I didn’t know how long I did it. People had to tell me later. Like you when you picked up Zed to carry him, once I started, I knew I just couldn’t stop.”

Heidi took another sip of the Scotch. So did Angelique.

“You didn’t brag about what you did. That is good. Bragging about it cheapens it. People will always ask you about it when they hear about what you did. Be prepared for it. Also be prepared for them to not understand.”

Heidi drained the last of her scotch.

“My daughter looks up to you. Others do too. That can be a heavy burden. I know some of what you are going to have to carry. If you ever need someone to talk to about it, or anything else, I’m here for you.”

Heidi stood up and stepped over the side of the tub. Angelique was shocked at the sight. Heidi’s angel wings tattoo glistened as the water cascaded down her muscular back. Heidi heard the gasp and saw the stare when she turned and looked.

“I got them when I was about your age. They were the first event I was talking about. I’ve been trying to live up to them ever since. If I had a way to give you a pair though, I would give them to you. You damn well earned them. Just remember, they are a hell of a burden to live with. That’s why we have to stick together.”

Heidi dried off and wrapped up. She left the room, leaving Angelique with the small bottle of scotch and her thoughts.

Kara ran along the forest. Her strides were light and sure. She was loose and more care free now as she ran. She wasn’t worried about keeping her pursuers just out of reach. Now, she could dart and dash. She was trying to out distance them at least, losing them would be better still.

She tried simple tricks like running with her stride as big as she could make it so they would lose where the next footfall was. She ran along game trails for short distances, sometimes in opposite directions. Sometimes, when she found the right clump of trees, she would climb one, usually the one in the middle, then move tree limb to limb, then drop out of a different tree and take off again. This forced them to sweep the entire perimeter of trees to pick up her trail again.

Kara was also zig-zagging, never pointed exactly to her destination but always gaining ground towards it. Anything to make them move slower than she was traveling bought her time. If she bought enough time and distance, she could squeeze in some rest or even some sleep before Garen got to the pick-up point.

Kara marveled at the night sky as she went. It was so pretty. The sky and the land, no one but her.

“Christian, I wish you were here to share this sight with me.” She said as she came around a bend in the ridgeline. What she saw in front of her moments later stopped her in her tracks.

In this small valley or depression in the ridges was a small lake or large pond. It sat in the middle, obviously created from the snow runoff. The remains of a shack at one end sat beside a line of pylons in the water, the remains of maybe a small fishing pier.

Kara looked around the walls of this tiny hideaway. It was beautiful. Between her and the shack was a large bright spot in the moonlight. Kara looked closer. A section of the granite ridge had collapsed, tumbling down towards the lake, leaving a talus field stretching at least four or five hundred feet from the top down into the water’s edge and at least a hundred feet across.

The slide area was composed of grey and white boulders sized from softball all the way up to some the size of compact cars. Kara’s eyes swept the slope, her mind leaping ahead with the idea this opportunity presented.

Kara made her way over to the edge of the talus field. She made sure to leave one or two subtle tracks and signs to point towards her moving across this giant rock pile. Once out on the rocks, she hopped rock to rock, swift and sure. She was careful not to shift or move any out of place as she went. This slide reminded her of other ones she would go running and scrambling on in Yosemite, Tahquitz and several other ones she used to go climbing at.

Kara kept moving. She knew she stood out like a bug on a paper plate out here on the rocks. Just a little farther.

Kara was standing on the rocks at the waterline, looking across the pond, lake? The next part she had to calm herself and prepare for. She stripped off her gear. All of it. From a small slot in her pack, she retrieved a giant contractor trash bag. Everything went into it; pack, weapons, boots, all her clothes. Soon she was standing naked on the rock by the water.

She knelt, the stone rough against her knees and toes. She looked across the water and up at the sky.

“Christian, thank you for guiding me here. I wish you were here to meet our new friends. I think you would like them a lot.” She looked down at her hands for a moment.

“I miss you so much. I wish I was with you there, but I know I have to earn it and I have so many things left to do to make it possible.”

Kara straightened up, squaring her shoulders as she looked out over the water.

“I will be without fear in the face of my enemies

I will stand brave and upright that the Lord may love me

I will speak the truth always even if it means my death

I will protect the helpless and do no wrong”

Her spoken words seemed to hang in the still air, full of power and conviction. She bowed her head for a moment before slipping into the water.

The chill of the ice melt stole her breath and froze her movements for a moment. She remembered watching video of a hypothermia expert who showed exactly what happened with cold water immersion and how long you had and what you needed to do to survive. Step one: Don’t panic! Step two: keep moving. Step three: get out as soon as possible and get your body warm by moving and adding heat.

Kara swam for the far shore. She tried to distract herself from the bone chilling water by picturing her pursuers going round and around the slide area trying to find the tracks where she left the slide. If they could follow her far enough to find the tracks leading onto the rocks, they would be going nuts looking at every twig and leaf and patch of ground looking for her exit point. They would have to go all around the perimeter of the slide more than once to confirm they missed nothing. They would have to wait for daylight as well. A lot of tracking signs are too subtle to see in the dark or with a flashlight.

Kara looked around as she got closer to the shore. She needed to disguise her exit from the lake as well as she could to keep up the ruse. She had to make some distance from there before she dared light a fire or anything as well.

Kara emerged from the water. Before stepping onto the land, she used one hand to squeegee some of the water off to avoid a big puddle next to the shore. A few tufts of weeds were handy enough to step on as she came ashore. A careful scamper to the trees got her out of the line of sight.

Kara used her travel towel to quickly dry off, vigorously rubbing her skin to get some warmth back. Now all she had to do is avoid hypothermia as she got dressed.

Lacing and buttoning was hard with all the shivering, but soon she was fully dressed and on her way. She hoped about an hour of running would boost her temperature and put enough distance in to earn a bit of rest.

Yeah, yeah, one little missing 'F'
we're an unforgiving lot sometimes; probably not enough to do. Now to keep some of us more occupied, ......you know where I'm going don't you?

Not for me, mind you; I've more to do than I wanted to face in retirement but, your other loyal readers seem to have more time; maybe just better organisation skills.

#5541 3rd sentence, lose should be loose, a missing o aint near as bad as the missing f! Thanks again, Sir, for your time and trouble and putting up with the peanut gallery!

That is an advantage to the MREs, especially the first gen ones. Eat a dehydrated pork patty or beef patty, then follow it with a canteen of water and you won't shit for several weeks without assistance unless your system is inoculated to such things

My teen has paralytic ileus - just made WO in the Canadian Army Cadet Corps... when he first ate MREs it messed his system for weeks, so he now goes for the beans and doesn't eat the cookies

Thank you. Personally, I saw nothing but fantastic characters and perfect grammar and spelling.

I remember someone telling me that if I wasn’t making a few mistakes then I wasn’t working hard or fast enough.
Now you can get back to it. I want to see some mistakes.
