Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Garen was feeling like a tennis ball, bouncing back and forth. He was in the middle of prep with Bekka for possible rescue or response when the radio call came in. Suddenly, he was now working a completely separate mission and Doug was taking over his spot in the rescue and response mission, both for the crew currently out, and if he or Kara ran into trouble, either before or after they link up.

Kara called for him to come pick her up. She was sprinting away from someone, leading them away from Angelique’s pick up point. Kara called specifically for Garen and his motorcycle. Garen wasn’t sure why.

Garen wanted to know why. Was it the location she picked? Was it because she didn’t want to put more people in jeopardy? Was it the speed of pick up? Shit! What was the answer? He needed to figure it out so he could prepare properly!

He knew he wasn’t going to get an answer until he gets there and asks her. He would just have to guess. There were things he could assume and that had to be his starting point.

His bike was the largest of the three adventure bikes and had the biggest fuel capacity and range. For two up, he needed to pull the rack off the back, put the back seat on, and shift some of gear in the hard cases on the sides. Some of the gear he was taking would go in a tank bag once he made the pick-up.

This was supposed to be less than twenty-four hours. He shouldn’t need a lot of food or shelter materials. She wouldn’t call for a solo pick up if she expected a big firefight to get to her, so he shouldn’t need more than a basic combat load. She didn’t sound injured, and she had her own med bag so he shouldn’t need his big truck bag. Three days of food and water, plus his small filter and some snacks rounded out his personal gear.

He finished his preps. He needed food and sleep to get ready.

I want to see clandestine use of a motorized 2 wheeler with normal audio around a leaf blower and chainsaw. Of course if Kara has them already running in top gear and she is already in the next state it won't matter.

Dawn found more people out and about. Sabine and Emilia were in the Hyena down at Larrissa’s place. Emilia was the designated driver and baggage handler taking her down to check on Penny and meet Larrissa and the kids.

Penny was recovering slowly but steadily. Sabine talked Emilia through the thought process of the neuro exam she was doing, explaining each step as she went. She added other elements like how the one she was using was based on a dive injury neuro examination.

Emilia loved Sabine’s smooth and steady style of assessing. It seemed more thorough and polished compared to Doug or Kara’s but she realized it was a much different environment they were in.

Sabine was forcing herself to take things slow and gentle. Her biggest worry was reinjuring herself and setting things backwards in her recovery. She noticed out of the corner of her eye Isadora watching her examine Penny and teaching Emilia in the process. This made her self-conscious, and not for the first time around Isadora. Sabine really liked her but felt intimidated by the older woman.

Sabine knew her medicine inside and out. The part she was worried about was parenting. She saw in Isadora all the things she didn’t know about being a parent or raising a kid.

It’s not like she had good examples of parenting growing up.

well, I know my factory stock goldwing at 30-40 mph doesn’t make much noise at all.

No hands on experience w/ such but I have seen promos for 'super quiet Off Road exhausts'; ROKON 2WD is often mentioned but I don't think speed is one of their big selling points.

I have ridden many 2 stroke Enduro bikes (Yamaha, Kaw, CanAm) and even off throttle, they bark; 4 stroke variants are better but WFO, all stock mufflers have a signature.

It follows that if one can suppress a firearm, one should be able to suppress a bike but at what cost? Guessing considerable but I doubt these would be NFA taxable :) ...... yet. Probably doable and considering that part of PNW is/was a hotbed of dope growing, there could be something black market in that area.

My Vstrom was exceptionally quiet, quieter than my car, and easy to sneak up on someone. My Kaw 1 liter Concours was so quiet (unless it's running over 7K rpms where it literally screamed) that the tappet noise was the loud part.... sounded like a sewing machine running.

If your only experience is with 2 cycle dirt bikes; yep, I can see that noisy reputation being there.

most of my Kaw experience was a 903 (single then), many many moons ago & later a '90 KLR650. 4stroke dirt started for me when I built a Bell 412 on an XL350 (a slow, heavy Honda) which really opened my eyes to why my dad had some Brit (Enfield?) 'scrambler,' far too heavy for me as a kid.

Honestly don't remember the 903 as being particularly loud until I gave it a Pop 'Yosh makeover and even then, the noise was where I used to be.

Had the KLR until my knees finally got the message through to my brain; miss it dreadfully but the body won't handle what a good bike can get you into or out of anymore.

I had a KLR for a couple of years. That thing was so rough riding and loud that my wife refused to ride behind me on it after a single ride, and she had put over 50K miles on the Concour. I bought it well used with about 125K miles and totally rebuilt. It tried to destroy my back and hips in the time I had it. But, it was cheap, offered a glimpse of rough road riding, and served its purpose. I moved from that to the WeeStrom. Loved the 'Strom.

I see we've distracted CCG. Now back to Market Day. I hope.

this place was awash with firearms. These all needed to be sorted, checked, categorized and stored.

Well, we can tell that Paige will have a full-time job when she gets there and adjusted!
If I haven't said it, CCG, thank you for the story. I only started recently, and you can see how far I've gotten. It's helped some with my lack of motivation brought on by depression. :)

Now, please go write more so I never get caught up.

“I’ll not spare the shovelwork on the likes of them!”

burying them will ultimately turn them into compost & enrich the soil. Doesn't have to be a nice grave.. just dig a hole in the pasture and drop them in. They'll feed the grass that feeds the cows putting them at the lowest end of the food chain. :)

Just a movie quote but what if we could get the elected and senior grey gov't officials to swear to something akin to it? Of course getting them to honour same may be a challenge as they all seem to feel free to invoke a 'personal interpretation' of the one they swear to now.

Griz, and have to pass a civics test before they can hold office so they know what they are and, more importantly, AREN'T allowed to do.

Sabine was forcing herself to take things slow and gentle. Her biggest worry was reinjuring herself and setting things backwards in her recovery. She noticed out of the corner of her eye Isadora watching her examine Penny and how she was teaching Emilia the process.

Sabine was quickly distracted by this, trying to force herself to continue.

Sabine felt uncomfortable with Isadora watching. She was not sure why but it was not the first time Isadora made her self-conscious. It not like she didn’t like her, in fact she really was fond of her but around her left Sabine feeling intimidated. She hated it when someone made her feel that way. It took away some of her power, her sense of control.

It wasn’t a feeling Isadora was questioning or judging her medicine. Sabine knew her medicine inside and out. The part she was worried about was parenting. She saw in Isadora all the things she didn’t know about being a parent or raising a kid.

“It’s not like I had good examples of parenting growing up. Damn it, Amber either get here or get out of my head!”

Brody met them when they arrived at the farm. Brody was always happy to hear the Hyena coming. If Brody was surprised by the new person with Tenshi, he didn’t show it right away.

“Morning Tenshi, Someone new with you I see.”

“This is Sabine.” Emilia said as she walked around the front of the Hyena.

When she told Sabine about the verbal subterfuge the group had with the farm members, Sabine told her she understood. Well, it was a little more than that, actually.

“Emilia, you have to be careful with such personas. If it is something you may have to live with, make it one you can respect, someone you can be, or want to be. Otherwise, it becomes someone you hate, someone you resent. It’s also a way to embody someone new, someone you want to be, need to be. Someday, you may have to be Tenshi forever. Make her someone you won’t mind being a part of you. With them, I will go by Sabine.”

Brody watched Tenshi help Sabine out of the Hyena. Sabine seemed to be moving slow. He wondered why. Some of those thoughts, along with almost all the others fled from his head as Sabine turned her gaze towards him.

The only time he remembered such a gaze was the one time he saw a wolf or coyote in the lower pasture. It was eating something and he surprised it. The level of intensity struck him then like a physical force. It was similar now when she locked eyes with him.

“Good morning, Ma’am. Pleased to meet you. How can we help you today?”

Brody went with the common courtesies to cover his nervousness.

“Good morning, Brody. I’m here to talk with your mother for a little bit while Tenshi has a chance to help you and Ruby with some of your morning chores.”

Brody was surprised at her voice. It was very precise, but weak. It reminded her of Sissy’s voice when she was hurting.

“I’ll go get her. Ruby and Ashley are already down with the goats.”

Brody didn’t wait for a response. He turned and bolted inside.

“So, Isadora told me some of what you are looking for. I have a couple of boxes of stuff. Baby clothes, the last of my diapers, plus the cloth ones I had stashed for emergency. Several sets of bottles and sterilizers are in the boxes. I found the breast pump as well. If the milk flow is still too low for the babies, we can help. Goat milk is the best substitute if you don’t have formula.”

Sabine smiled just a little.

“This is all great! It’s a batch of first time pregnant mothers. We have no idea how effective they will be at making sufficient milk and we didn’t bring formula. Your goats could be the very life’s blood for the new babies.”

Sabine relaxed a little. One of her big worries had a solution now.

“So, Larrissa, anything you are worried about health wise we can help with?”

Sabine was back into her medic mode now her own upcoming problems have some answers. She had a small community now to medically take care of. Between her and Garen, they had to keep them healthy.

Re-edit #5502

Dawn found more people out and about. Sabine and Emilia were in the Hyena down at Larrissa’s place. Emilia was the designated driver and baggage handler taking her down to check on Penny and meet Larrissa and the kids.

Penny was recovering slowly but steadily. Sabine talked Emilia through the thought process of the neuro exam she was doing, explaining each step as she went. She added other elements like how the one she was using was based on a dive injury neuro examination.

“OK, the first thing we look at is what we call ‘orientation’.” Sabine said as they started.

This wasn’t the first time Penny went through this with Sabine but she understood she was teaching Emilia as she went.

“We want to know if the patient knows their own name and age? For this to be valid, we need to know the right answers as well, otherwise they could tell us anything.”

“We follow this with do they know the present location, what time, day and year it is?”

She turns and looks at Emilia.

“Remember, even though she appears alert, the answers to these questions may reveal confusion. Do not skip this step.”

Sabine turned back to Penny as she continued the exam. She was talking to Emilia the whole time.

“Next, we have her count the number of fingers you hold up, using two or three different numbers. Don’t get into a rush. Check each eye separately and then together. Then we have her identify a distant object.”

Sabine points to a picture she placed on the dresser earlier when they first walked in.

“A sail boat” Penny said, correctly identifying the object.

“Good!” Sabine said.

“Now, we tell her to hold her head still, or you can gently hold it still, while placing your other hand about 18 inches in front of their face.” Sabine took Penny’s head in her hands to demonstrate.

“Now, we have her follow your hand with her eyes. Move your hand up and down, then side to side. Her eyes should follow your hand and should not jerk to one side and return.” Sabine looked over at Emilia, saw she was keeping up with writing all the notes as they went.

“Good, next, we check her pupils to make sure they are the right size and react to light properly and accurately.” Sabine used a small penlight to check the pupil’ response.

“The next element is the rest of the of the cranial nerves. We ask her to purse lips like puckering up for a kiss. Look carefully to see that both sides of the face have the same expression. They should match. Anything that doesn’t make note and ask if it’s normal or preexisting.”

“Moving on, we ask her to grit her teeth. Feel her jaw muscles to confirm that they are contracted equally. To test the sensation of the face, we have her close her eyes while you lightly touch your fingertips across the forehead and face to be sure sensation is present and the same everywhere.”

“To check her hearing, hold your hand about 2 feet from her ear and rubbing your thumb and finger together. Check both ears separately, moving your hand closer until she hears it.”

“We want to check her swallowing reflex. We have her swallow as we watch. For some it’s hard to see the ‘adams apple’ move. We can lightly feel the throat on those people.”

“Since we are right there, we have her stick out her tongue. It should come out straight in the middle of the mouth without deviating to either side.”

Emilia was seriously impressed with the thoroughness of this exam. She was a little overwhelmed and trying to keep up as Sabine just kept going.

“We test her muscle strength by telling her to shrug her shoulders while you push down on them to observe for equal muscle strength. Check her arms by bringing the elbows up level with the shoulders, hands level with the arms and touching the chest. Tell her to resist while you pull the arms away, push them back, up and down. The strength should be approximately equal in both arms in each direction. Check leg strength by having her lie flat and raise and lower the legs while you resist the movement.”

“One of the last ones is balance and coordination. Remember, if she fails, you need to be prepared to protect her from injury when performing this test. First, have her walk heel to toe along a straight line while looking straight ahead. Then walk both forward and backward for 10 feet or so. Pay attention to whether her movements are smooth and if she can maintain balance without having to look down or hold onto something.”

“Next, have her stand up with feet together and close eyes and hold the arms straight out in front with her palms up. She should be able to maintain balance if the surface she is standing on is stable. Your arms should be around, but not touching, her in case she starts to fall.”

“We check coordination by having her move an index finger back and forth rapidly between her nose and your finger held approximately 18 inches from her face. She should be able to do this, even if you move your finger to different positions.”

“Now, we have her lie down and tell her to slide the heel of one foot down the shin of the other leg, while keeping her eyes closed. She should be able to move their foot smoothly along the shin, without jagged, side-to-side movements. Do this on both right and left sides and observe carefully for unusual clumsiness on either side.

She noticed out of the corner of her eye Isadora watching her examine Penny and how she was teaching Emilia the process.

More colour & background but more field-usable diagnostics too, all in one but yeah; #5506 par 17 "the next element is the more elements" needs a tweak I think

I think you are a little off in your reading. as of 10:49 it reads-

“The next element is the rest of the of the cranial nerves. We ask her to purse lips like puckering up for a kiss. Look carefully to see that both sides of the face have the same expression. They should match. Anything that doesn’t make note and ask if it’s normal or preexisting.”

LOL. It's a bummer but the trucks are BLS only. We carry an AED. The post ambulance has a 12 lead unit, but most of the time they leave it on their rig. We were working a respiratory arrest, they walked in with just the Cot. Gotta love the government worker mindset!!

Sabine was back into her medic mode now her own upcoming problems have some answers. She had a small community now to medically take care of. Between her and Garen, they had to keep them healthy.

Larrissa seemed happy with Sabine’s offer. This being her first visit she was not sure how long she should wait to call Tenshi to take her home. She was hoping soon since she was starting to hurt.

“Olivia and Hera are going to be so happy!” Ashley was literally hopping up and down, she was so ecstatic to tell her friend Tenshi the news. Not that she actually told her anything yet, but …

Emilia waited for her to stop bouncing, practicing her best ‘Bekka’ stare before caving in and asking what she was talking about..

“Happy about what?”

“We’re going to have baby goats!” Ashley was grinning and jumping again.

Emilia looked over at Ruby.

“Are you guys going to trade some with Karl and Isadora?”

Ruby just smirked as she replied.

“No, Mom’s going to just give them a couple. It will make the kids happy, spread the herd out some and shake up the bloodlines some to shift things around. We will keep a few of the young ones and most of the old ones. Zed told Mom before he left on his trip he and a couple others were going to start prowling about looking for abandoned livestock to add to our farms as well.”

“Well, that sounds like fun!” Emilia liked the idea of actually getting off the reservation and doing stuff. Not that she wasn’t enjoying what she was doing now, but she was getting a touch stir crazy. She was about to say more when her radio crackled.

“Pelican 28 inbound, 30 out, minor med on board.”

Emilia keyed her mic.

“Pencil will handle the runway. Breaking off supply run and headed that way”

Emilia looked at Ruby.

“Got to go get Sabine and head back to the house, crew coming back. Tell your brother I will try to swing by tomorrow.”
