Henrik stood below, watching Sabine and her patient go up the cliff, the belay line playing through his fingers. When they reached the top and were safe, he turned to examining the vehicle. He was wondering how much stuff they should package up and recover for the deputy. The vehicle was a goner and there was no good reason other than environmental impact to pull it back up. There were, however, a lot of potentially useful things inside. He started pulling and stripping things he was sure the deputy would want, like the weapons and other supplies in several bags in the back.

Henrik also grabbed the floor mats from the front. He would keep these for himself for protecting ropes from rough edges. This way he wouldn’t have to pull the ones out of the Cherokee again like he did this time. He was digging around when he got word over the radio. Anything they wanted from the vehicle was now theirs, take what they want. This also made sense with considering the rapidly diminishing flashing lights in the distance. So, now he looked with a different eye. What did they want from this?

Depending upon what's in the trunk, he might even determine why someone ran her off the road. In any event, I'm betting that they acquire some good stuff from that car. We'll know eventually, as well as what the ER people say about her marks on the patient.
Thank you. I didn't expect anything new during your trip.

The more Henrik dug out, the more confused he became. Sure, there was plenty of things you would expect to find; first aid gear, clip board, helmet, gas mask, riot gear, road flares, spare ammo and such. The things he wasn’t expecting though was stuff like a pair of duffle bags with woman’s clothes, properly sized for their recent patient. A couple cases of MREs and a couple cases of water were there as well as a small tent and sleeping bag. These things, along with some of the other clutter made him think more like the other deputy’s story was just that; a story. This looked like she was bugging out from somewhere and ended off the road.

Now Henrik was really worried. Was she fleeing and the guy they helped was the one to run her off the road or were they both fleeing and she just lost control or…. Henrik had too many questions they didn’t have answers for. He forced himself to focus on the steps at hand in front of him. Collect all the usable stuff first, then get up the hill and pow wow with the group about what he suspected.

Up on the road, Sabine was busy resetting her medical gear while Paige was bundling up the second rope they already had topside. She was also trying to think about where to put more stuff since Henrik was bringing up whatever he thought they wanted or needed from down there. Paige thought about asking him everything he found so she could plan better, but that would make the whole process that much longer. She wanted to get reset and get the hell out of here. They were vulnerable right now. They had the two vehicles blocking most of a lane, people scattered in two places and no one really sure of what was around them. All of this made the hair on the back of Paige’s neck stand up.

Sounds like going AWOL to me but, who knows why; there's always a back story, in life or fiction..
I mean, besides CCG.
I'd be guessing anyway so .... more coffee & I'll wait here.

OK, forget about the recert class.... this is a clliffhanger, write more!
Thank you. I just hope she made it to the hospital all right. If so, then the other deputy probably wasn't what she was running from. We'll see soon enough.

Cliffhanger? I don't see no stinking cliffhanger.

Just got back from a field exercise, called the wife, and within the first five minutes, she asked me what I had decided about the deputies. does that tell you how close hold some of the things are?

remember, as we said in the Air Force-
Flexibility is the key to Airpower
Indecisiveness is the key to flexibility
therefore
Indecisiveness is the key to airpower

Well they were hanging off what could be likened to a cliff.

Take a break - a good night's sleep is something you should get whenever possible; having said that, I'll keep your secret about the deputies ..... assuming you've decided of course.

Yeah, eating the first meal of the day, kicking back and prepping for tomorrow's night scenario. Long day tomorrow. Morning lectures, then evening/night remote ops. Felt like Doug again today working through the field problem. One of the instructors was our patient. He got an NPA and IV and was going to get a Foley until the one running the scenario said we were only to simulate the foley. We were also talking securing the tube on the foley with benzoine and the trauma stapler. That may have had something to do with his reluctance.

The four of them stood around the pile Henrik had them pull up from the crashed deputy vehicle. Henrik started off with his concerns.

“OK, guys, some of this looks right or easily explained. Food, water, tools of the trade like first aid kit, extra ammo, riot gear and so forth all make sense. Here’s where my thought train jumps the tracks. Who brings two duffle bags of clothes and other possessions on a shift? I’ll tell you who; not a standard cop on a standard day. Who the hell did we just help?”

Andrea had a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Sabine looked like she was still trying to come back to focus after being hip deep in a serious trauma and rescue call and was having a little bit of trouble shifting her gears.

Paige was having trouble as well and was replaying all their interactions with the deputy on the road. From the very start, through helping put the patient into his vehicle, all the scenes played in her head like rewinding an old school VHS tape. She was looking for the inconsistencies, vagaries and other clues to tell her if they did something good or bad today. Finally, after what felt like hours in her head, but in reality only a few seconds, Paige spoke up.

“OK, the deputy was genuinely concerned for the health and welfare of the other deputy. It was written in his body language, his actions and his movements. If he was wanting harm done to her, from up here he could see the crash wouldn’t have been survivable. Shoot, it still might not have been. There were no signs pointing someone to the crash site if he wasn’t here as well. If it was robbery, then he wouldn’t have left us anything we might recover. All things considered; it might just end up a mystery we never know the answer to.” She looked around at the other faces turned her way before she continued. She was proud of her deductions. She didn’t even need the butterflies to prompt her this time.

“Let’s take the stuff, wrap it in trash bags and put it on the roof rack between the two pods on my trailer. We can sort it out later but for now we need to get on the move.”

No one disputed her findings and plan. They could all talk more once they were on the move. They were well behind their target pace and needed to start looking for the next lay-up point for rest and reset.

An hour down the road, Andrea was in the lead and called a halt and reset when she spotted a likely spot. It wasn’t good enough for an overnight but Sabine was wiped for energy and needed food. Andrea figured if Sabine was like this, the giant stomach with legs would need fuel as well with all his exertion.

It was a somewhat prolonged stop for food compared to the original travel plan but the body needs fuel to work and more importantly, think. Henrik grabbed his stove and got things underway for Andrea to cook. It was a division of labor beneficial to all. Andrea was one of the best, fast cooks in the group and had done the least amount of physical work. Paige helped her. This let Sabine and Henrik put their feet up for a ten-minute power nap to help recharge their batteries.

The meal was simple, quick and would be familiar in some form to many a dorm resident. Several packets of ramen noodles into boiling water, add a couple cans of chicken and some cream of onion and French onion soup mixes and a couple table spoons of powdered garlic. All designed to cook quick and give plenty of starch and protein. The high salt content of the mixes would help with electrolytes and influence them to drink more water to stay hydrated, a big concern in the cold weather.

From stopping, to eating, through clean up, they were stopped for almost an hour. This would fuel them to push forward to a good remain over night location.

Just before they got on the road, Paige reminded everyone to keep an eye on each other.

“We have a long way to go. We have to keep an eye on each other. No hero time. If you’re tired, fuzzy headed, hurting or any other concern, sing out. We are on ‘our’ timetable and not anybody else’s. If we have to take it slower to do it safer, let’s do it. No one’s coming to save us. It’s up to us to save each other.”

The road beckoned. The little convoy of two rolled out.

their projected distance via the plotted rout is around 1400 miles on a lot of 2 and 3 digit roads.
Assuming there are no 'spontaneous' or 'unforeseen' excursions/course corrections which 'might' occur :devilish::sht:

Bear in mind this author was going to secure a catheter w/ a trauma stapler so I'd get set for hard acceleration, very high cliffs & long drops plus God knows what .......if you doubt me, you'll have no one to blame when you dislocate something .....just saying;)

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
A couple of hours down the road, Paige was in the lead when she spotted something she wasn’t expecting. They came around a bend and, in the distance, sat a small square flat-roofed brick building. This wasn’t what drew Paige’s attention. It was the deputy sheriff SUV parked out front. She had seen it before today. It was the one they had put the broken deputy in. She knew it was the same one. Besides they had crossed a county line over an hour ago and were no longer in the county marked on the side of the vehicle.

Seeing this here, Paige’s curiosity exploded in her head, along with her anger. They had risked their lives to rescue the deputy. She was supposed to be at a hospital. What was he doing sitting here instead of at a hospital with the other deputy?

She wasn’t thinking rationally. The old Paige would have given him the benefit of the doubt, stopping to find out about the woman. He might have had good reason for being here but not today.

She forgot about the belongings they collected from the car. They could stop and ask the Deputy what was going on. They could do this cautiously it did not need to go down like a drug bust.

The butterflies reminded her the world was ugly people were not to be trusted remember asshole who attacked you trying to kill you.

“This is bullshit! I’m pulling in!” Paige exclaimed over the radio.

This took the rest of them by surprise. Henrik had been looking at the map and Andrea and Sabine hadn’t seen the deputy’s SUV yet.

Paige pulled to a stop behind the deputy, blocking him in incase he tried to flee. The dust cloud of them pulling into the asphalt lot was still blowing when Paige leaped out, grabbing her carbine from its rack by the door.

Henrik was out the door and on an intercept course in a flash.

"Hold up a minute! Don’t just go running in there by yourself!” Henrik was between her and the door now.

“Get out of my way! I want answers!” Paige saw Sabine and Andrea headed towards her now.

Sabine came even with Henrik, laying a hand on his shoulder. “It’s OK, I want answers as well. I’ll go in with her. You need to stay out here and keep track of Andrea and the vehicles.”

At the look from Henrik, Sabine continued. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep her safe or cause enough of a ruckus you two can come save us.”

Paige was glaring at Sabines comment about saving them when she saw Sabine wink at her.

Andrea and Henrik stayed outside while Paige and Sabine went to the door. Without pausing to even read the sign on the door, Paige went right inside to find the deputy.

It was a small room Paige barged into. The twenty-foot square space was all brick and wood paneling and vinyl furniture. A small window or counter was in the far wall. Paige saw all of this and none of this. Her eyes were immediately drawn to the deputy seated on the couch.

Sabine was barely in the door when she saw Paige suddenly moved like lightning.

Her pistol leaped into her hands. Her shooting stance was picture perfect, the green laser from the grip on her 45 tracking true, square on the deputy’s chest.

“You were supposed to take the other deputy to the hospital! What did you do with her? We didn’t go through everything we did for you to just dump her somewhere!”

The deputy didn’t know what was going on. One minute he was napping and now, craziness has exploded in the room. “What the hell.?.?.?” He started to stand up.

Paige was having none of it. “Stay right where you are. Put your arms straight out to the sides. If I see them move downward, it ends badly for you!” The deputy saw the seriousness in Paige’s eyes. His arms went out to his sides and he sat back in the seat very slowly so not to upset her.

“Good, now answer my questions and you might see tomorrow.” Paige’s voice was a touch calmer now. The deputy was complying. “Where is the other deputy?”

“She’s back there.” He pointed with a finger, keeping his arms out straight. He could not understand the change in attitude. She was friendly, kind and reminded him of his sister when they met now she was this raving lunatic. He had seen this with behavior with drug users but she was military. What happened? The world really was going to shit but he could not think about it now, he just need to do what she said.

“Why here and not the hospital she needed.” Paige’s voice had some of the rage creeping back in.

“Because she needed somebody good, not the hacks at the local doc shop! I wasn’t going to take my sister to those half-assed butchers! The closest doc I trusted is right here!” There was some anger now in the deputy’s voice now as well.

Sabine was stunned by Paige’s sudden violence and aggressiveness. Once Paige had the deputy contained, Sabine took a moment to look around. It looked like a doctor’s office alright, but something was off. Sabine’s head snapped back around when she heard the deputy say the other deputy was his sister. It answered one question they had at the scene.

“Paige, there is more here than we know. Let’s back down a minute and see what’s the deal, OK?” Sabine’s voice was soft but insistent. She needed to defuse this. Paige was seriously wrapped around the axle and Sabine didn’t know why.

Paige still hadn’t moved the pistol a single inch, her gaze never shifted. “My whole crew risked their lives to save her. If I find out you’re lying, you better hope I’m dead. Sabine, if he makes a move and he gets me, you better burn him down.” Paige slowly lowers her pistol. Sabine heard the safety snapping on as Paige holstered her pistol.

Sabine looked over at the deputy. “You better make us understand what’s going on. Your sister needed some serious surgery. That normally happens in a hospital. You’re telling me you trust your sister’s life to a veterinarian over a hospital?”

Paige’s head spun around to look at Sabine. “Veterinarian? What the ****?”

The deputy spoke before Sabine could. “My uncle has thirty years of surgical experience and will do anything for us. To him, she isn’t just another Saturday night repair.”

Sabine looked at him, then Paige. “I’ll go in the back and check in my patient.”

She looked back at the deputy. “I understand doing whatever you can for a brother or sister. It would have been better to tell us the truth up front, though.”

Sabine walked through the door to the back of the vet clinic, leaving Paige and the deputy in the waiting room. She hoped Paige was calm down enough so the deputy would be alive when she came out. What was wrong with Paige she thought as she went through the swinging doors leaving them alone.

ah hah! His sister! We might just pick up another pair of allies if she recovers quickly enough. Or, they might show up later in the tale.
Well played, CCG! Thank you.

They've got 1400 miles ± of unknown, probably hostile terrain to traverse so way more than adequate time & opportunity to skin some knees or get someone perforated plus a slightly fragile pregnant woman; what could possibly go amiss?

Why nothing Griz! It’s only 1400 miles. My goodness. What has the hair standing on end?

Lol. So true! Haha

Her injuries time better with the second caravan than the current caravan. But there are at least 1400 miles and an indefinite calendar to play with. I'm a little surprised the Uncle stayed in the back during this invasion.

Sabine walked back through the hallway. She saw classic vet exam rooms with the small table in the middle of the room. She continued on towards the back. Next was a small, neat, well stocked pharmacy station tucked in a nook off to one side. Sabine went right on by, she saw a door leading deeper into the building. Pushing open the door, she found what she was looking for.

The procedure room was quite a bit larger than she expected. There was even a track in the celling for a small chain hoist. It seemed this place was set up for both small and large animal veterinary work. In the middle of the room was an operating table with many segments and rails to adjust its size and configuration. Right now it was collapsed down to approximately human size. A bloody sheet was still on the table as well as a pile of bandages and such on the floor, along with a not insignificant pool of blood. An older gentleman was busy mopping and cleaning when she walked in. He looked up at her.

“Can I help you, young lady?” His mannerisms showed his fatigue but he was polite and didn’t seem too surprised to see her standing there.

“I came looking for the female deputy. She was my patient and I’m trying to follow up on her.” Sabine snapped into medical mode. It seemed the best approach to take.

“My technician is seeing to her right now. She should be coming out from under the anesthesia soon and we will see where we are at. You do good work, by the way. I guess thanks are in order for saving my niece.” All the time he talked, he kept mopping.

“Can I go see her?”

“I would prefer you wait until my tech has her settled and comes back out. It’s a small room and I would prefer not to distract my tech.”

Sabine shifted gears again. “How bad was she? Did I miss anything?”

“Pelvis was intact, thank god! Bilateral femur fractures were serious but not too complicated. I had plenty of hardware still laying around to secure them. You kept the blood loss to a minimum with the tourniquets which helped. I was able to fix things before restoring blood flow so it kept what was left in her system inside.”

“And the abdomen?” This was the one Sabine was most worried about.

“Small liver laceration. I was able to control it. The body is a wonderful thing. She will regrow what she needs of her liver. It would have been worse if it was the other side. If I had to take out her spleen, it would have made her much more vulnerable to infection in the future.”

Sabine spoke into her radio. “Everything checks out. We should relax a little.” She looked over at the gentleman. “Is there someplace we can park around back out of sight? We would like to stay a little and make sure she is doing ok, if that’s alright with you?”

“There is a gate to the side leading to the large animal barn. It’s empty right now.”

Sabine got back on the radio. “Henrik, Andrea, pull the vehicles around back so we don’t attract the wrong sort of attention. I think we are all good here.”

“Paige I suggest you let the brother go move his as well. And while you are at it let the poor man change his drawers. I think you came on a little high order.”

Paige was both angry and embarrassed by Sabine’s words. Paige figured she would talk to her about it later but in private where the conversation belonged.
