Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
The letdown after such frantic activity was jarring. Sabine, Henrik and Andrea went back to some adjusted times of sitting at the hospital with Paige, sleeping at the hotel, and mostly at Andrea’s prodding, shopping. Paige was wheeled out for MRI’s, CAT scans, and a host of other tests and the parade of doctors was steady. Everybody seemed to be taking a major interest in her recovery.

Several days into this new routine, Sabine was walking into Paige’s room after a quick pre-rounds bagel and coffee in the cafeteria when she saw something different. Standing by the bed, running his fingers through Paige’s hair on the non-shaved side, was the Sargent Major. Sabine thought he didn’t hear her arrive. She stood and watched for a moment. He seemed to be smoothing and straightening it away from where it fell across one side of her cheek. It was tender, not creepy. She could tell he genuinely cared, whether it was for Paige or he was seeing his daughter, she didn’t know. Maybe it was both. Sabine could hear him speaking softly to her, but she couldn’t understand what he was saying. Finally she figured she should speak.

“If I knew you would be here, I would have brought another coffee for you.” She said as she walked forward.

The Sargent Major didn’t move, or look up when he spoke.

“The docs say she is doing well. They are talking about bringing her out from under soon, maybe today, or tomorrow. How are you guys doing?” He finally pulled his hand back and looked over at Sabine.

“We are getting by, Sargent Major. How are things back on base? Are the problems squared away enough we can come back home and to work when Paige is released?”

“Oh, yeah, we cleaned house. I think we got all the bad apples out of the barrel. I have sent at least ten off to help recovery operations way up at Puget Sound. I sent them by ground convoy. We told them they would be gone 30 to 60 days and we told the command they are going there to assist to ‘just return them when you don’t need them anymore’, so who knows if they will ever be back.”

Sabine chuckled at the deviousness of such a move. She definitely didn’t want to get on his bad side.

“So, what brings you down here this morning Sargent Major?”

“I was hoping to talk to all three of you. When are the other two coming over?”

“I can give them a call, they are just across the parking lot. Actually, do we need to do this here or should we offer to buy you breakfast so we can talk somewhere else?”

The Sargent Major thought a few moments then asked.

“How private would it be at breakfast?”

“We tip the waitress well and she lets us use a closed section, so pretty private.” Her curiosity was now climbing.

“Sounds good. How soon could they be there?”

“Let me shoot them a message real quick and we can head over. They will meet us inside.” She sent a quick text. Moments later, she got a reply. She looked over at the Sargent Major. “They will be there in a few minutes. They might even beat us there.”

The two of them left the hospital room, nodded to the guard outside the door and headed to the elevator.

The four of them sat around the breakfast table. Several carafes of coffee dominated the table and a full quart of heavy whipping cream from the fridge in their hotel room to care of the creamer. Everyone seemed to be a bit on pins and needles. Everyone didn’t know where to start. Finally Sabine figured to start.

“So, Sargent Major, you called the meeting, what sis you want to tell us, ask us, and or order us?”

“I am here to tell you guys some official stuff and some stuff we never talked about.” He paused a moment as if trying to decide what part to start with first. “First off, with the majority of the command staff down at the conference during the quake and tsunami, it has left a vacuum in the upper leadership of the entire base as well at the higher levels above the base. This has left things in a rather unique position. The XO of the Spec Ops division of the school is the defacto unit and base commander for the foreseeable future with G series orders and full command authority. With no one able to stop him, he has cleaned house of some problems and some problem children, some of which were my concerns following Paige’s attack. All formal training events have been suspended due to the massive amount of assets sent to the coast for support and recovery missions. Fully two thirds of the base is currently empty. We still have some students here waiting on the next class. Some of them will be leaving soon back to their originating units. Some have no units or homes to go back to, in which case, this will end up like when Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines blew. They will be sent to a new unit, and reimbursed for loss of belongings and start over. We have a military precedent for this with the Subic Bay and Clark Air Base examples. There is already talk of which bases will be rebuilt and which will not, just like Homestead AFB in Florida. They decided to not rebuild it after the destruction by hurricane Andrew. They just consolidated the missions to other bases rather than pour the amount of money needed to build the base again. Depending on the number of survivors compared to what will be rebuilt, there might be an excess of manpower for some time. It wouldn’t surprise me if there is a big voluntary reduction in manpower to cull the numbers to what is now needed rather than what we have. Some of us have probably seen our last PCS. I was hoping for one more assignment, but I’ll be here until I decide to retire instead, I figure. You guys still have many years available so it will probably just be an option rather than mandatory retirement.”

He paused to take a good gulp of coffee and let what he said sink in before he continued. He could see they didn’t think about any of this before right now. They were so head down in their own problems it didn’t occur to them the larger implications of the events at the coast. Half a cup of coffee down, he continued.

“So, right now I can afford to be liberal with leaves and time off as need be to keep an eye on Paige and make sure you guys are safe and secure. I took the opportunity to ship off some potential trouble hundreds of miles from here, but you need to still keep your heads on a swivel. I don’t know if I got all of the Captain’s lackeys and sympathizers. One of the things to make command and control a little easier, we are moving you” he gestured to Andrea “over to the senior field radio operator position at the Spec Ops division. It’s been vacant for over a year since we can’t get a MARSOC one moved here. The training teams al bring their own and you would just be primarily a gear and advise person like Sabine, but it would get you closer to our envelope of control in case anybody higher in the chain returns and takes over. We are also moving you” he pointed to Henrik “over to help with the core Mountain Warfare aspect of the Spec Ops Division. You will in theory help teach our ‘special’ people how to operate and integrate with the main marine forces in the mountain environment. You will still earn time and experience within the specialty, but we will own the hand receipt until told otherwise.” He poured another cup of coffee.

“All of this is to get a better leash on you guys and hold you closer so I can protect you as well as Paige.” At this, his face colored a little.

“I’d do almost anything to protect my troops. What was done to her was so wrong on so many levels. I am absolutely filled with rage at such a thing taking place at all, much less in one of my shops! I will make it right, and have gone a long way towards it already. Most of what I have done, I would do for any one of my troops. I have no problem with any of it seeing the light of scrutiny. Part of what I need to talk to you about is the other parts.”

“Officially, what I can tell you is Capt. Frickel has been transported from the base to another facility for holding pending Article 32 and Court Marital proceedings. He is no longer a concern of yours until such time as you” he pointed to Sabine “will be required to testify to the conditions and medical observations and treatments required at the scene of the event, and Paige’s testimony if necessary as to the events preceding her attack. Since she was knocked out from behind, it would only go to background and motive and not to the actual assault. I doubt any of that will be required.”

At that, Andrea jumped up, fire in her eyes.

“Why wouldn’t it be required? Don’t tell me the bastard is going to get away with it!”

Sabine put her hand on Andrea’s shoulder. “I don’t think that’s why he’s here. Give him time to explain before we rake him over the coals.” The tone was placating and soothing, the meaning was clear however. Capt. Frickel better be paying for what he did.

“I have told you what I could ‘officially’. The unofficial reason I am not telling you is the doctors don’t know if he will regain consciousness or be mentally cognizant enough to stand trial due to his injuries sustained in his frantic escape attempt. Deep in the desert at a rest stop, he was released from the transport van to relieve himself. While out of the vehicle he attempted to overpower the transporting officers. This did not end well for Capt. Frickel. Once subdued, he was returned to the van and transported at speed to meet up with the civilian medevac helicopter from Salt Lake City where he remains in a guarded ICU in a vegetative state currently. The medical staff feel he may regain consciousness maybe. He will never walk again and one eye had to be removed due to damage in the assault on the transporting officers. Long story short for what you were not told, he will never be a direct threat to anyone ever again. Period. Next we will talk about the unofficial unofficial talk I want to have.”

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...Snark! At least the break down was not just mental but he started deteriorating physically as well.

Thank you

“When I got here, I was struck by the uncanny resemblance of Paige to my own daughter Violet. The XO, who I have been stationed with off and on for over twenty years saw it too. This led to much ribbing about selling off the spare and dalliances elsewhere, all good-naturedly. I showed a pic to the wife, and she was spooked. She knows how many came out and she was even startled, so when she was attacked, the father part of me and the friend part of the XO were taking it as personal as well as professional attacks. Oh, did you guys know Paige had a wireless camera system recording her workshop and saving to a cloud account?”

Everyone at the table was a little surprised at this.

“She sent a link to the storage to both I and the XO after we spoke to her concerning Capt. Frickel’s original transgression in the armory. The microphone was amazing. Well, we also have a clean and clear set of footage from multiple angles showing the assault. And I might add, Sabine’s challenge.” He nodded to her. She blushed.

"I also showed my daughter a picture of Paige a couple weeks ago. When the assault happened, I checked the footage. I knew we had him dead to rights and wanted to ship him far beyond his political safety net. I started with picking a place away from any Special Operations connections to cut down on his resources. Once I picked Dugway, I started setting up the transport. While I was doing so, several more people started getting nosey and tried to get involved. I was worried the process would get derailed and we would lose the slam dunk we were looking for. I talked to the XO about the problem. He reminded me his daughter was stationed at Hill AFB just northwest of the Proving Grounds. He started to pull that string while I tried to figure out some other thing to keep him off balance and give Veronica someone she could trust to back her up. Violet was the obvious choice. I knew beyond a shadow of doubt she would never side with Frickel. It really didn’t occur to me to go the extra steps you guys did to **** with his mind. I got her here TDY. She was glad to help and would defend V to the death, no questions asked.” He paused, looking like he was drained from all the talking.

“I don’t know what all you guys did, but it seemed to seriously push him over the edge. He was screaming at her things like ‘I was told you were in the hospital’ and how are you up and walking around’. The more he went, the more wound up he got. She didn’t respond or say a word the whole drive, or at least there isn’t anything on the audio tape. Oh, yeah, Veronica had an audio recorder playing the whole drive, so we have plenty of raving confession on tape as well as the actual assault. Officially, I have no knowledge of what you guys did or how you did it, but it must have been one hell of a job.”

Andrea pulled out her IPad and pulled up the pictures. She quickly pulled up a split screen of the original of Paige and the one of Violet she had her pose for to match and slid it in front of the Sargent Major.

“HOLY ****! No wonder he went nuts! You have to send these to me. I have to show the wife and the XO, all unofficially.” He stared at the pictures for a few more moments then looked up to the crew around the table. “Violet will be in Salt Lake for a while testifying so she may come back down here for a weekend or two. She said she would like to visit again if that would be OK. She said she would like to meet Paige when she’s conscious, if that would be OK.”

Everyone assured him they would love a more casual visit with her and Veronica rather than the short business one they had.

“One last thing.” The Sargent Major’s voice got serious, on the verge of somber. He reached into the small knapsack he brought with him and produced a DVD. “Don’t watch this in public. Don’t tell anyone what you see. Don’t save it to the computer. Don’t leave it laying around for anybody, and I mean ANYBODY other than the four of us and Paige could see it. Once the four of you have seen it, take a little block of wood or plastic and set this on top of it in the microwave, then zap it for 25 seconds. The baby lightning storm light show will be pretty but not overly harmful this once. Do it too often and you have to buy a new microwave. Call me when they bring Paige out from under or there is any change. Call me if you guys need more time past this upcoming weekend. Stay alert and focused.” With that, the Sargent Major stood up and strode out of the diner.

Everyone decided. They all went back to the hotel room. Andrea pulled out her laptop and the cables to hook it to the flat screen. The suspense was thick in the room as she booted the disk. It contained a video file.

The first image was confusing. They were looking at the inside roof of a van. At the edge of the frame, they could see Veronica, prim and proper in her camouflage uniform, behind the steering wheel, a clipboard in her hands. The dome light came on and the image rocked back and forth some. Veronica spoke to unseen people.

“Good evening gentlemen, Capt. Frickel. Since he is known to be violent, please lock him to the floor ring. Capt. Frickel, we are going for a little drive to your new home while awaiting trial. If you behave yourself properly throughout the trip, all will go smoothly. Do not give me trouble of any kind. If you do, the outcome will not be pleasurable for any involved and it will only worsen your pending outcome. Thank you, gentlemen that will be all. My co-driver will be here momentarily.” The dome light went out as they could hear the van doors being shut. Once this happened, Veronica turned in her seat and spoke at Capt. Frickel.

“Look Captain, I meant what I said about behaving yourself. I have your jacket of charges here and it disgusts me. I haven’t seen such a laundry list in a long time.” She started leafing through the papers on the clipboard. “Let’s see what all they will be addressing at your article 32 hearings. You are being charged with violating the following articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, in numerological not chronological order: 80, 81, 89, 90, 92, 93, 120, 125, 128, 133, 134-3, 134-4, 134-26, 134-35, 134-36 and 134-47. This is quite the list. You should just sit back and contemplate the errors of your ways.”

A male voice came from off screen.

“What the hell are you talking about? I don’t even know what most of those are! I was told I was charged with assault, of which I am contesting for cause. What are the rest of those you rattled off?”

Veronica had a smirk as she replied.

“They have you for much more. Let’s see. What are the highlights?” She made a show of flipping through the pages on the clipboard. “Attempted murder, conduct unbecoming, disobeying a lawful order of a superior officer, it looks like there are twelve counts of that, Unlawful conduct as a sentry in time of war, and they have the camera footage from inside the armory for most of this.” Veronica’s eyes lit up as she got to another page and she smiled. “Oh, and it will be interesting how you ‘contest with cause’ the raping of her six year old son!”

The scream was harsh through the speaker on the flat screen. In the van, it must have been deafening.

“Rape her son?! What the **** ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?”

“Calm down Captain. All I am doing is reading the charges sheet. And all I am reading to you are the items with check marks and numbers links to the material evidence. My co-driver is here now. You need to sit back and shut up if you know what’s good for you.” Veronica turned to look across the cabin of the van towards the passenger side. She held up a small audio recorder high near the roof where the Captain could presumably see it, then set it prominently on the dash of the van.

“Wait, what the hell is she doing here? She can’t be here. What kind of ****ing trick is this? She’s supposed to be in a coma! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!”

“Calm down, be quiet. We are just taking a drive. Do not irritate the Special Agent who is driving and can add more charges to your list!” Veronica wasn’t loud, but she was forceful and harsh, the tone cutting through the Captain’s noise like a knife.

The dome light came on. There on the screen, looking down into the camera was Violet/Paige. The camera moved and got closer, then turned towards the dash and was wiggled and jostled some more until it settled down to a view of the dash and the windshield. A slow rhythmic up and down motion puzzled them for a moment, until Andrea solved the quandary.

“Bodycam”

Veronica spoke again.

“Ma’am, here is the map so you can follow along and help navigate. The van has already been fueled and has enough for the entire trip. I will repeat what the JAG briefed you. Do not speak with the prisoner, otherwise there might be more interaction required at the far end. Do you understand?”

There was some movement, so the viewers assumed she nodded her head.

There were a few minutes of silence, then the Captain had to speak.

“What is this bullshit about your son? What kind of shit is this? I thought you were in the hospital! Sargent! You better answer me! I am a Captain in the….” The words were muffled by the squealing of tires and the view of the camera ended up being of Violet’s thighs as the van came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road. Veronica’s voice came loud and clear.

“Look. She is not to speak to you. She has been ordered not to. She actually knows what orders mean and what to do when given them. Oh, and as for rank, a bottle cap has more rank than you do while you are in custody. Your rank is ‘Prisoner’. In case you didn’t read you booking papers, your rank and privileges afforded due to such have been suspended. If you are exonerated, your rank and privileges will be returned, but considering the charges and the evidence against you, I wouldn’t count on it! At this point, I think you should devote all your energy to prayer for solitary confinement. Child rapists in Leavenworth don’t fare well in general population. Now shut up!”

At the words ‘child rapist’ a sob came out of Violet.

The Captain was stunned for a few moments. The next sounds to be heard were a continued low repeated phrase of ‘this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening’

The quiet mumbling was all that was said for several hours. Eventually, the Captain screwed his courage or his outrage up enough he had to pop off again.

“Look, I was told she was in a coma, how are you up and walking around? If you’re up and walking around, how is it attempted murder? None of this shit makes sense! I want to talk to my lawyer! This is bullshit! Where’s my lawyer? He didn’t authorize this move. This has to be illegal!”

Veronica’s voice was weary sounding.

“You can talk to your legal representation when he gets to the holding facility. He’s a little busy right now. That’s part of the reason I keep telling you to shut up. Your lawyer isn’t here and we do not want to question you without him. I am a federal law enforcement officer. You say shit to me and it’s admissible. I am not asking you questions. I am in fact commanding you to shut up. You are only hurting your case.” Veronica paused, then continued. “Actually, go ahead and talk, I don’t care. Your case probably couldn’t get much worse. You probably would have been better off if you could have hit worth a shit and actually killed her.” Veronica’s voice went soft and consoling for a moment. “Shit! I’m sorry ma’am, but it’s the truth from that point of view. Then you couldn’t have testified about the sexual advances on you and the rape of your son. He was trying to shut you up and get away with it again.”

Violet’s camera shook a little and they heard soft sobs coming from her. She was really selling it.

The captain’s voice sharpened as he lashed back.

“What do you mean again? What kinda shit are you trying to hang me with? And what do you mean couldn’t hit worth a shit?”

“I mean your punch was as limp as your dick! Punching her was probably the biggest boner you had since her son. If it wasn’t so weak, she couldn’t have played dead, knowing she had four cameras recording the whole assault. She just had to put up with your pathetic ass making a fool out of yourself for a few minutes, then she would have all the evidence to finally put you away! We already have investigators pouring through the other units you were in. Some have already come back with examples of a ‘pattern of behavior’. This will lead us to your other victims. Like I said, you shouldn’t be flapping your gums. You should be praying for solitary.”

This earned another couple hours of silence.
