I'm surprised that Bekka didn't take the wheel, I would have, and put Paige in the back...

…..l.lWe couldn’t have made it into here without her skill. It will be tricky getting out of here but as soon as you get to the hardball, I’d put her in the back seat and bring Olivia up front with you

Bekka hadn’t driven the trail in and didnt know the lines or difficulty which according to Kara was significant . Bekka trusts Kara in her assessment

I suspect she'll be behind the wheel sooner rather than later. Hope it's just a minor illness or <gasp> another pregnancy and not something serious. She could have taken a wound that she didn't tell anyone about and have some internal problems as well.

Thank you.

Well Bekka & Garen do have room for a nursery but, really, with three hormonaly imbalanced women (pregnancy d o e s do weird stuff to the mothers) and then, three fairly near-together births and the evil hordes at the gate, I see much more tension and distress in the cards .... but, it isn't our imaginations putting this trip together .....

Zed, Angelique and Kara stood watching the Suburban roll out of sight around the bend. They already knew their initial compass landmarks and headings from the map studies prior to coming. They just stood still and listened now. Talking from here on out would be at a minimum and at a whisper. Minutes rolled by as they stood. Finally, they could no longer hear the engine of the Suburban or any other sounds of its passage through the woods.

Still, they waited. Finally Kara waived the other two close. Their heads almost touching, Kara pulled out the camera and showed them while she spoke.

“Bekka got some photos of the guys at the car. We should go over them when we stop sometime after sunrise.”

The others understood and nodded in agreement. To review the pictures in the dark would light up the area with a bright artificial light unless they covered up completely before reviewing it. Either way, it would destroy their night vision for too long. Better to do it once things were brighter outside so it attracted less attention.

For the last hour or so, all three of them weren’t using their night vision goggles. There was some illumination out here and everyone felt it would be better to save the goggles for when they really needed them.

Zed looked at the other two and motioned for Kara to lead the way. They planned ahead of time who would take point for which leg for their initial insertion. It was broken up to keep from burning one person out being in the front all the time and would aid all three of them in keeping alert.

For the first part, Kara was in the lead, followed by Angelique with Zed bringing up the rear. This brought some other things to Zeds mind as he watched them moving in front of him.

He found it kind of odd this ‘patrol’ only had one person who was in the military, and her job in the military wasn’t doing heavy combat. He had patrolled looking for poachers, but that was different. He mainly helped find them and radioed their position in to the park forces. And the third was just a young girl. Yet, here they were, loaded to take on the world, wandering the backwoods of America. Not for the first time Zed was thankful Marta didn’t have to live through these times, as much as he missed her.

It didn’t take long before Bekka understood what Kara was talking about. There were some places she had no idea how Paige was able to traverse with the big Suburban at all, much less without a screaming engine and a lot of extraneous noise. She also saw she had to work hard at keeping Paige focused and on task if any of the trail was easy for more than five minutes.

It was after one particularly gruesome obstacle section it happened. Paige threw the shift lever in park.

Paige didn’t even look over at Bekka. She just undid her seat belt and clawed at the door.

“Solomon said it’s your turn”

While Bekka was trying to figure out who Solomon was, Paige tumbled out the driver’s door onto the ground.

“Shit! Olivia get out and help me!” Bekka said as she dove out her own door and raced around the front of the Suburban.

Bekka came around to the driver’s side. Paige was laying on the ground, unconscious. She seemed to have thrown up as well. Bekka got closer and her nose told her that wasn’t the only leak. Damn!

Bekka was turning Paige on her side when Olivia came up to them.

“Good. Olivia, I need the bag in the footwell on the passenger side. Paige is sick. We are going to put her on the back seat and strap her down. After you get me the bag, I need you to move all of our bags to the floor of the front seat. You’re going to ride up front with me.”

“Is she going to be OK?” Olivia asked, worried.

“She should be, but we have a bunch of things we need to do to help her.”

Olivia was quick with the medical bag Kara left for her in the Suburban. Bekka looked through it, making decisions on how much to do verses how much can wait for Garen at the house.

Once Olivia was done moving the gear, she came back to Bekka and Paige.

“Now what, Ms. Bekka?”

“There’s some trash bags in the door pocket of the back seat. Grab a couple of them and the roll of paper towels as well.” Bekka wasn’t liking what she had to do, but it would be better than the other mess it would make if she didn’t. She pulled out a couple pairs of medical gloves.

Bekka started unlacing and removing Paige’s boots. The shirt was next followed by the pants. All of this went into one of the trash bags when Olivia brought them. Her wet and soiled undergarments went into another bag. She handed a pair of gloves to Olivia and set the roll of paper towels down between them.

“Dry her upper half off, I’ll clean up the mess down below in a moment. We need her dry to keep her warm.”

Bekka rolled out a Tyvek litter from the bottom of the med bag. This she spread out next to Paige. A giant twelve cell heat blanket was next. They were like the little hand warmers, but blanket sized. On top of this went a wool blanket she retrieved from the back of the Suburban.

Bekka went back to Paige and her own half of the cleaning, talking to Olivia as she did.

“So, once I finish getting her clean, we wrap her up in all of this to keep her warm, load her onto the back seat, strap her in, then get the hell out of here and headed for my house. How does that sound?”

“Sounds good, Ms. Bekka”

OK CCG I'm really, really interested in this little road block. I can't find anything referencing Solomon, Paige's medical history or an injury/illness from Penguin's farm. :hmm:

Most of your little course deviations explain or resolve themselves fairly quickly or there's some clues but this one doesn't feel that way.

Or if you were just feeling the need to reset the hook, it worked. ;)

In spades!

I like setting the hook, but Solomon comes back to the edit being too late for the site in #5181

Second paragraph in the edited version is as follows-

"Another part of Paige felt like she was watching someone else do all these things. She was seeing it as a mechanical process. She had no fear, no trepidation, no worry over what or who they would find. She knew she should worry, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She did, however wonder why no one else noticed the bright blue butterfly on the dashboard. Well she trusted the butterflies before so drive on Solomon. She figure she must be the opposable thumbs"

Ah-ha!
Well that explains no Solomon reference being visible but the underlying causality of her symptoms and current condition are more than a little vague.

Your readers are a patient lot and now I have something to search for. You'll likely post the answer/details of her condition before I suss it all out but I'm semi-locked down again so I've got time and little else to occupy me.

I'm Confused. Is Solomon the Baby in her Belly? Or an Angel helping to guide her on her last Journey... Or both at the same time...

"She did, however wonder why no one else noticed the bright blue butterfly on the dashboard. Well she trusted the butterflies before so drive on Solomon. "

Solomon is the name of the bright blue butterfly

Norm is the name of the main protagonist butterfly in her head

Ouch. We ask for a little more drama and you give it to us by the Suburban-full. Only a few hours from home when Paige drives, but how long with Bekka behind the wheel? Totally unconscious after mental confusion, fever, and we see no other symptoms yet.

No don't be killing any hero off just yet, we really like them all, and are still learning each one's mental uniqueness!
Thankss.

Why do so many readers seem determined she should come up preggers? This story won't go on long enough for her to bear and rear Ginger Yeti II .... or could it?

Hmmm perhaps a postulation worthy of consideration.

Got another actual 18 years of writing in you CCG?

As I said, we're a patient lot .....

“OK, we are making my secret recipe for an energy drink. Grab that big bowl over there. We are making a big batch.”

“Wouldn’t it be easier to just have a case of red monster or whatever?”

“This old school recipe has a bit more, and is much healthier for you and lasts longer.” Zed smiled, all the time telling himself he must have misheard what was written as a name tag on the drawing. He will look at it in a little while.

“OK, Zed. What are the ingredients so we can mix this up?”

“So, since we are making a large batch, we start with three cans of frozen juice concentrate.” He points to one can each of pineapple, orange and grapefruit concentrate on the table. “Dump those in the bowl. Next we take some water I have over here on the stove coming to a boil and dump in about 20 tea bags.”

"Isn’t that a lot? There’s only about two cups of water in the pot. Shouldn’t we add more?”

“Nope,” Zed shook his head “we want it to be very concentrated. We let that boil for about five to seven minutes, then take out the teabags and add two cups of sugar. While that dissolves, we come back over here.” Zed turns towards the bowl on the table. “We mash up six frozen bananas. Fresh ones would be better, but I didn’t have time to shop.” He smiles at Emilia. “To this, we add a sixteen ounce jar of fresh raw honey.” He starts stirring the gloppy mess. “Emilia, here, stir this. As it breaks up and thaws, we stir, and can start using the whisk.” He holds up a large whisk, “It will stir easier after I add the tea and sugar mix from the stove.” He pours the still steaming pot into the big bowl, melting the last of the frozen components. Emilia starts whisking away, trying to get everything smooth and combined. To this he added four scoops of Gatorade powder, fruit punch flavor and four scoops of egg based protein powder.

Zed grabs a small bottle from the spice cabinet. “The next thing we add is about ten drops of clove oil.” Finally, Emilia can’t take it anymore and has to ask.

“OK, Zed. Explain how this is an energy drink.”

“Sure. The fruit juice is short term and some medium burn sugar. The honey is longer burn. The bananas are for the potassium for the muscles. Tea is for the caffeine. Tea has more than coffee. The raw sugar I mixed in the tea was to boost the caloric content. Gatorade for the electrolytes, and protein powder for the protein.”

“And the clove oil?”

“Clove oil is a natural mild anesthetic to reduce feeling pain, like from burns, bruises and such. But more is not better in this case. If you put too much clove oil in, you will shit like a goose for a week.” Zed thought about what all they had put in, then remembered one more ingredient. He went to the pantry and pulled out a liter bottle of tonic water. Opening the lid, he poured it all in as Emilia stirred and whisked. “Quinine, for muscles.”

Went back to look at Zed's energy drink to see if there was anything that might cause such a reaction. Since Paige didn't recognize the drink, she may never have had it before. Maybe the clove oil, maybe fatigue, or both.

Well that concoction would/could generate some gastric issues for many but IIRC, she didn't imbibe it until she evidenced orientation & other issues on the out bound drive to recover Bekka & Olivia/drop Zed's REECE team.
Don't worry; CCG will expose the details in his own good time.
My turn to prep dinner tonight so I'll see all y'all later. :)

The three scouts trotted across the terrain, covering ground quickly. They were behind their planned time hack and wanted to get in place before sunrise. Down, around, up, over and through they went. Finally their first real objective came into view.

The destroyed Mercedes was still there, still on its roof. All manner of stuff littered the ground but a lot less than they anticipated. Kara moved across the road to the opposite side. Once she was there, she walked along just inside the tree line while Angelique mimicked her on the near side. With as much stuff strewn about as there was, they were looking for the trail of the people who looted the car.

While two of them looked for the trail, Zed slid up to the car. He first looked at what was left behind, both inside and dropped around it. He stayed close to the body of the car to avoid being seen too easily.

None of the food or clothing he was told was part of the cargo remained, including the girl’s clothes other than a loose sock and a wayward glove. Everything left seemed like the sort of stuff left in a house when people move in a hurry. Papers, wrappers, a book or two. These were what wasn’t considered worth taking or making space for by whoever was here.

Zed moved around to the open trunk. With the car on its roof, everything in the trunk was dumped when they popped the trunk. Once again, it was mostly empty. There were a few minor surprises left inside, probably by either people in a hurry or not familiar with German cars.

The first aid kit and the tool kit Zed retrieved went into his pack. These could come in handy later or if he had to dump them, no great loss. He moved forward to the front fender to examine the bullet holes in the car.

A quick check with his calibrated finger told him it was probably thirty caliber, which told him not much. Thirty caliber is a huge range of calibers. It could have been a 30.06 deer rifle or someone’s grandfather’s M1 Garand. It could be 308, which could once again be deer rifle, M-14 clone, or who knows what. Maybe 30-30, somebody’s lever gun, or 7.62x39, which adds all the SKSs and AKs into the mix. He might know more if the found the shooting positions and collected brass. They needed to know what they were up against.

Kara found the trail. It wasn’t hard. When you have five or six people making multiple trips or fifteen or twenty people coming through laden with cargo, you leave quite a disturbance. She followed parallel to the trail for a hundred yards or so to confirm the direction. She broke squelch twice on her radio before she headed back to Zed.

Angelique had traveled about half a mile when she found one of the shooting positions. It was an old-fashioned deer blind with a chair and everything. She looked around carefully for several minutes, trying to spot any game cameras or other detection devices before getting any closer. There were several shell casings along with cigarette butts and other trash on the floor. A regular trail led out of it and up to the road.

Angelique made sure she was well covered, including her face as she crept closer. She knew the power of pictures and didn’t want to be recognizable later if she missed something. As she got within about six feet of the deer blind, she pulled out her tool. It was an antenna from a busted radio. She extended it to give herself about six more feet of reach. She needed one of those casings.

It took a good minute or two for her to spin it around and skewer it on the tip of the antenna. She almost dropped it when the radio broke squelch twice. Kara had the trail! Angelique collected the casing, putting it in her pocket, along with the collapsed antenna. She broke squelch on her radio three times and headed back towards Zed.

Zed heard the squelch breaks. Good! They were collecting info quickly and could press forward to a spot to hide, think, plan, and rest.

“Ok, Olivia, I need you to work the map for me.” She leaned over to where Olivia was sitting. She pointed on the map where they were. She had grabbed a quick location off of the GPS earlier and was following along when Paige fell out.

Olivia looked at the map, trying to remember everything Ms. Bekka showed her the past day and a half. She could see the little dotted marks faintly in the faint red light from the dome light.

“Can you do this?” Bekka asked her.

“Yes Ma’am.” Olivia said, not sure but unwilling to fail.

“Good, because I need to drive so we get out of here sooner rather than later. We also need to keep an eye on Paige in the back seat.” Bekka jerked a thumb over her shoulder where they had Paige wrapped up on her side and strapped in across the back seat.

Bekka was worried. She didn’t know this trail and she hoped Paige got them past all the roughest bits because she was nowhere near the level of off road driving and rock crawling she saw Paige do. If Olivia could keep them pointed in the right direction, she could focus on getting them out of here.

With all of this in her head, she had another slice of her consciousness working on a plan in case they couldn’t drive out, like if they got off track, turned around, rolled down a ravine, or broke the Suburban. It was one of the things that kept her calm in a crisis but …

Olivia was struggling to see the lines on the map in the low light. Finally in frustration she blurted out.

“It’s too dark! I can’t see the lines on the map good enough!”

Bekka stopped the Suburban.

“It’s ok, Olivia. Look in the glove box or the center console. There should be a small light you can use on the map.”

Bekka looked at the trail ahead she could keep going until they came to any sort of a turn or something at least while Olivia looked for more light.

Olivia seemed to be rummaging forever. Door pockets, side pockets, glovebox, she even turned and looked around the back seat with Paige for a moment. Finally, Bekka looked over and saw Olivia had some sort of little blue light on the map and following the route again. She had to make sure she didn’t look over there, the blue light would spoil her night vision.

“You got it? You have us on the map again?” Bekka asked Olivia without looking over.

“”We’re good Ms. Bekka. Next fork, turn left.” Olivia said, full of confidence again.

“ATC this is Viking Six inbound.” The radio jolted Garen from the book in front of him. He scrambled for the handset.

“Viking Six, ATC.”

“ATC, Viking Six inbound. Red flare medical. 60 out. How copy?” Bekka’s voice sounded tired and worried but not scared or pissed, Garen thought. Red flare, wounded on board, but she said medical. Somebody sick on board? Sick enough to call it in before getting here instead of waiting? She called it in an hour away by her guestimation.

“Viking Six, copy all. Approach will be cleared to primary hanger.”

“See you in sixty, ATC” The radio went silent.

Garen sat staring at the radio receiver, trying to think who to wake up for the inbounds.

yup, she just wouldn't sleep in the tent. She slept in the front bench seat of the Cherokee, with Henrik's big coat as a blanket, She slept on the floor at Karls, She slept in one of the bunk rooms at the training building
but probably not well, although fever, rapid thready pulse etc would seem to indicate medical before psych/neuro first but I'm guessing: its been eons since I had to diagnose anything & mine were all pretty straight forward....GSW, burns/punctures, leaking various fluids from inappropriate places, gross deformation of a limb (or two) .... that sort of thing

“Sabine? Sabine?”

It took a few moments before Sabine knew where she was and, more importantly, who was talking. It was Garen. What did he want?

“What is it, Garen?’ Sabine asked softly. She didn’t want to wake up Andrea next to her.

“Bekka is on the way in with a medical emergency. I was hoping you could back me up on the medical and Andrea handle the radio while I work with the inbound.”

“What do we know about the inbound?” Sabine asked, waking up fully now.

“Bekka called in she had a medical, not trauma patient. That worries me. She called it in an hour out. Medical an hour out means it must be bad and…..” Garen stopped.

“OK, let me wake up Andrea. I’ll rollout there in a few. Start some coffee maybe? It will help my brain get going.”

“Cool, thanks. I’ll get the coffee going.” Garen backed out of the room.

Sabine rolled over to face Andrea. She gently shook her.

“Andrea, Time to go to work.”

Andrea scrunched up her face.

“What?” She opened one eye. “Work?”

Sabine smiled and ran a hand through Andrea’s hair, brushing it from her face.

“I have a patient to help Garen with so you have radio duty while Garen does med duty.”

“****.” Andrea looked at her watch. “I guess four hours has to do.” She looked up at Sabine. “Tell me there is coffee.”

“Garen is making it now.” Sabine smiled.

“How far out?”

“Garen said an hour-ish or so.”

“Screw it, I’ll be out after a shower. You,” Andrea pointed at Sabine. “You, need to stay in the chair as much as possible. More brains than hands. You are barely held together with kite string and superglue.”

“Its medical, not trauma. Garen has the hands and I’m backing up his brains. I’ll be good.”

“Bullshit, but try for me.” Andrea said with a smile.

Garen went through the tunnel to the garage. He knew Emilia was staying up here tonight since everyone was now out of the training building. He was hoping he could be quiet enough to wake Emilia and not Allyson. That turned out to be easy.

Garen was expecting Emilia to be in the tiny studio above the garage. Instead, she was sacked out on the couch on the main floor of the garage.

“Emilia, wake up.” Garen gently shook the foot sticking out from under the blanket.

“What’s up?” Emilia sat up.

“Bekka’s inbound, thirty minutes out. She’s called a medic alert, so she will be coming in fast. Could you run the gate again?”

“Sure thing.” Then what Garen said caught up to her. “Medic alert? Do we know what?” She was putting her shoes on now.

“Nope, but it sounded medical, not trauma. I got coffee cooking right now, so see you over there in a few.”

Paige was confused. She smelled woodsmoke, and damp earth. She wiggled around. She felt a sleeping bag around her. She wasn’t sure where she was. She could see the sky above her. It looked like dawn. She rolled over. Now she could see more. She was beside a small lake.

“Well, do you want coffee?”

That voice! Paige sat up. He was here! Paige struggled to get out of her sleeping bag.

“Be careful!”

Paige didn’t care! He was here! Paige jumped up and ran to him. He was standing now, next to the fire. He held out his arms, one hand with a coffee cup, trying to not spill it as he absorbed her rush.

“Oh, God! How!?” Paige buried her head in Henrik’s chest. He was here! Alive!

“It’s ok, Paige. Relax. I’m here. You’re here. We are fine, for now.”

Paige just stood there, holding him. She had him now! She was never letting go!

“Not that I mind holding you, but….”

“I’m not letting go!”

“Paige…Let’s sit. I have coffee.”

Paige let go reluctantly, with only one arm. She slid to his side.

“How, Henrik? How are you here?”

“Clean living?” He chuckled.

Paige stiffened.

“You mean…”

“I’m working on our cabin.” He gestured with his coffee cup behind her. She turned where he waved. Behind them was a pile of logs, a cleared spot among the trees, and a pile of hand tools. “I hope to have it done by the time you are here for good.”

“Huh?”

“You’re not here forever yet, Paige.” Henrik said gently.

“Why not? Why can’t I stay? I don’t want to leave you again! I can’t leave you again!”

“You have too much still to do. You need to go back, soon, but not quite yet.”

The air shimmered around her, she couldn’t see for a moment, then it was evening. She was sitting beside Henrik next to a fire. She had a drink of some sort in one hand and Henrik’s hand in her other.

“You see, there is plenty of time on this end. You still have a long way to go, I think. I hope. I am always with you, though.” Henrik smiled at her. “I love you, and I always will, but you have others you need to help and teach and lead.”

“Lead? I can’t lead! I screw it all up! I got people killed. Hell, I got you killed!”

“No, no you didn’t get me killed. You got everyone through you could. You kept more of them alive than anyone else could have.” He kissed her. “Now, we have a little more time before you have to go back.”

Paige gripped Henrik tighter. She didn’t want to go back. She heard movement beyond the firelight. A tall figure walked up.

“Good evening, Henrik, Paige.” He nodded to both as he sat on a chunk of log across from them.

“I was wondering when you were coming by. I have another mug by the fire for you.” Henrik said.

The stranger picked up the mug Henrik pointed at.

“You know she must go back.”

“We know. Is it time already? You have been here longer and can feel these things better.”

The stranger looked at Paige.

“Paige, you far outshine Henrik’s description. I look forward to you being here one day with Henrik for good, but for now you need to return. My sister will take care of you. Tell Kara I’m proud of her and miss her.”

Paige buried her face in Henrik’s coat. She didn’t want to go.
