Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Everyone was tired. All the preparations plus the stress of getting to a new place compounded the effect. Some were getting ready to go out again, either to retrieve Bekka and Olivia or to scout the area and find out who and why they were attacked on the road. Between new people who didn’t know where things were and who people were, to people who were stressing trying to make the newcomers comfortable, to the worries for the wounded, the whole place was one big ball of stress.
As night closed in, groups broke apart and tried to get some rest. Tomorrow was the last opportunity for the group heading out to square things away. Tomorrow night they drive out.
Garen and Jesse were down in the training building with Karl and his family sitting around the big table. Garen was filling them in on his idea and offer.
“So, the house is big enough for all of you, the barn is huge since it was set up for dairy. This would give you mostly cleared fields to start with instead of trying to clear a new space in the forest. It’s basically move in ready. You would have us on one side and a great little family working cows on their own spread on the other side.”
“It would help you guys settle a lot faster. The only other location you could farm without some serious tree clearing would be the high meadow in the park. There’s a six bedroom cabin there and you would be closer to me but at the house Garen is talking about, there is the other family next door with four young people for the girls to interact with.” Jesse added. Garen picked up where Jesse left off.
“Yeah, Larrissa’s kids are pretty much running the farm there now. Brody, the oldest, he’s fourteen and working the cows mostly. His sister Ruby, she’s eleven or twelve, she helps Brody and also works the goats and chickens with her little sister Ashley, who’s eight. The youngest is Finn. He’s five and helps collect eggs and carry buckets and stuff as he learns things.”
Karl and Isadora looked at one another, their thought s flowing back and forth silently. Karen and David hadn’t been married as long so they actually talked out loud as they discussed the options. Finally all four of them looked over at Garen and Jesse. Isadora was the one who spoke.
“Let’s go meet our new neighbors tomorrow. It sounds wonderful and much more than we could have hoped for. We don’t know how to thank you.”
Jesse didn’t know how to take that. It was like a knife to the guts when he found out everything they did and lost to help his granddaughter, yet here they are thanking him?
“It was the least we could do after you did so much to help Paige. It cost you your house, your land, your son.” The room was silent now as Jesse paused. “Anything I can do will never repay you for your sacrifice.”
Isadora reached across the table and took Jesse’s hand in hers.
“The so called Sherriff would have come for us sooner or later. The people who came, who you sent, they saved as many as they could, and a lot more than we would have managed on our own. You also gave us somewhere to go to, instead of just running away aimlessly.” Unshed tears filled Isadora’s eyes as she spoke.
They all sat there for a few moments, no one knowing what to say. Finally Garen broke the silence.
“We can go up there late morning tomorrow while everyone else gets their last minute preparations ready for tomorrow night’s mission.” Garen said as he started to get up. Suddenly a thought hit him. He better explain more. He sat back down.
“There is something else. Because it was mostly kids up there and we didn’t want to advertise how many of us there are back here, Angelique started a deception to keep what Larrissa’s kids knew about us cryptic. She was also having a bit of fun flirting with the boy, Brody. The other women joined in and have been playing the mysterious stranger act up there, with different names and identities and such. All good natured fun with an operational security excuse. I’ll have Heidi or Emilia fill you guys in tomorrow.”
