Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Everyone was tired. All the preparations plus the stress of getting to a new place compounded the effect. Some were getting ready to go out again, either to retrieve Bekka and Olivia or to scout the area and find out who and why they were attacked on the road. Between new people who didn’t know where things were and who people were, to people who were stressing trying to make the newcomers comfortable, to the worries for the wounded, the whole place was one big ball of stress.

As night closed in, groups broke apart and tried to get some rest. Tomorrow was the last opportunity for the group heading out to square things away. Tomorrow night they drive out.

Garen and Jesse were down in the training building with Karl and his family sitting around the big table. Garen was filling them in on his idea and offer.

“So, the house is big enough for all of you, the barn is huge since it was set up for dairy. This would give you mostly cleared fields to start with instead of trying to clear a new space in the forest. It’s basically move in ready. You would have us on one side and a great little family working cows on their own spread on the other side.”

“It would help you guys settle a lot faster. The only other location you could farm without some serious tree clearing would be the high meadow in the park. There’s a six bedroom cabin there and you would be closer to me but at the house Garen is talking about, there is the other family next door with four young people for the girls to interact with.” Jesse added. Garen picked up where Jesse left off.

“Yeah, Larrissa’s kids are pretty much running the farm there now. Brody, the oldest, he’s fourteen and working the cows mostly. His sister Ruby, she’s eleven or twelve, she helps Brody and also works the goats and chickens with her little sister Ashley, who’s eight. The youngest is Finn. He’s five and helps collect eggs and carry buckets and stuff as he learns things.”

Karl and Isadora looked at one another, their thought s flowing back and forth silently. Karen and David hadn’t been married as long so they actually talked out loud as they discussed the options. Finally all four of them looked over at Garen and Jesse. Isadora was the one who spoke.

“Let’s go meet our new neighbors tomorrow. It sounds wonderful and much more than we could have hoped for. We don’t know how to thank you.”

Jesse didn’t know how to take that. It was like a knife to the guts when he found out everything they did and lost to help his granddaughter, yet here they are thanking him?

“It was the least we could do after you did so much to help Paige. It cost you your house, your land, your son.” The room was silent now as Jesse paused. “Anything I can do will never repay you for your sacrifice.”

Isadora reached across the table and took Jesse’s hand in hers.

“The so called Sherriff would have come for us sooner or later. The people who came, who you sent, they saved as many as they could, and a lot more than we would have managed on our own. You also gave us somewhere to go to, instead of just running away aimlessly.” Unshed tears filled Isadora’s eyes as she spoke.

They all sat there for a few moments, no one knowing what to say. Finally Garen broke the silence.

“We can go up there late morning tomorrow while everyone else gets their last minute preparations ready for tomorrow night’s mission.” Garen said as he started to get up. Suddenly a thought hit him. He better explain more. He sat back down.

“There is something else. Because it was mostly kids up there and we didn’t want to advertise how many of us there are back here, Angelique started a deception to keep what Larrissa’s kids knew about us cryptic. She was also having a bit of fun flirting with the boy, Brody. The other women joined in and have been playing the mysterious stranger act up there, with different names and identities and such. All good natured fun with an operational security excuse. I’ll have Heidi or Emilia fill you guys in tomorrow.”

It was late in the evening. Almost everyone had settled in for the night or still trying to find that one elusive piece or tool or advantage for tomorrow night’s mission. If not that, they were on radio watch, or looking after the wounded.

Andrea was happy. Sabine was waking up more frequently and seeming to improve. Garen told her Sabine should get steadily better and better as long as they kept infection away and he didn’t miss anything.

Isadora was keeping a close eye on Penny. She had regained consciousness a time or two, at least enough to recognize her mother and that she was safe and cared for before she went back to sleep. Garen told Isadora, it could be a long road, or Penny could just straight out wake up and be mostly recovered. He didn’t know, but waking up some was a good sign in his book. Andrea told her about Paige’s head injury and recovery to help keep hopes alive and fear at bay.

Garen was down in the workshop tinkering with something with Zed. Nothing for the mission, just some absent-minded problem solving to let their minds coast.

Jesse was down in the training building, catching up with Karl. It had been many years since they had seen one another face to face. It was mostly over the radio and occasionally an email or two. Like most military relationships, in some ways it was like no time at all had passed and they fell back into comfortable rhythms, but they also had so much history apart. There was a subdued undertone to the light-hearted banter.

Eventually, the conversation between Jesse and Karl came around to Karen, both Jesse’s and Karl’s.

“It seemed the right thing to do. I had to.”

“Does she even know why you named her Karen?”

“No” Karl looked down at the table a moment. “But I told Isadora. I had to for it to make sense to her why Karen and not Cindy after her grandmother like she wanted.”

“I bet that was a hell of a conversation.” Jesse mused.

“It wasn’t too bad. At least it wasn’t after I told her what I did.” Karl was quiet after he said that.

“You didn’t DO anything! It wasn’t your fault. If you don’t want to hang the blame on the terrorists where it belongs, then it’s my blame. I was the one who volunteered to take the mission. You didn’t come begging me to do it. I came to you and told you I was taking it. The blame is mine.”

Karl could hear all the guilt and pain in his friend’s voice as he said this. He also knew he could never convince him it was his fault not Jesse’s for being a slacker and wanting out of the mission. Jesse spoke again, breaking him out of his train of thought.

“Tell you what. Let’s put who’s to blame aside for now. Since we are talking about Karen, let me tell you about when I met Heidi a couple months ago.” Jesse proceeded to tell the story of meeting Heidi at Doug’s cabin. Karl knew Karen from long ago and could appreciate the resemblance.

I don't see that as happening in one paragraph but, there shouldn't be any cliff opportunities embedded in there. Having said that, we all know how creative our guide can be in such situations ;)

Dinner wasn’t sitting well with Paige. She was up walking around when she caught up with Angelique and Emilia rummaging in some bins in the bay. This place had several rolling carts full of weapons. When she first got here, she had to ask about them and was told they were scavenged from several locations after killing some very bad people and Garen hadn’t had time to do much with most of them. They were mainly sorted into the ones he needed to do something with right away and the piles for later.

Angelique and Emilia were digging through some of those ‘later’ piles, looking for something.

“What are you guys looking for?”

Angelique looked over at Paige. She noticed Paige looked like she didn’t feel well.

“Looking for a bracket or chunk of rail to hold this.” She held up a small flashlight-shaped commercial laser, complete with a little pigtail pressure switch.

Paige knew this was one of the wally world mall ninja level lasers. It would be very out of place on any of the gear or weapons she had seen around here.

“What do you need to mount that for?”

Emilia started talking.

“It’s for Brody. We have enough night vision goggles now, we can take one of the non-military ones down to Brody to hunt the hogs. Angelique thought one of the lasers from the bin would help as well.”

Paige thought a moment or two, her gunsmith brain kicking in now.

“So what is he using for a hog gun now?”

“Garen set him up with a short little 30-30 lever.” Angelique answered.

Paige thought some, looking at the parts they had in their hands.

“Tell you what. If you wait until I get back, I can build something and set it up right. Instead of duct tape and hose clamps.”

Angelique looked over at Emilia. She could see Emilia didn’t want to wait.

“Emilia, don’t forget Garen’s axiom number seven.”

I know.” Emilia pulled herself up to a prim and proper pose before continuing. “There are two ways to do things; the right way and again.”

“And you don’t want to give Brody anything half-assed” Angelique added.

Paige was watching this, sure she was missing some other subtext.

Everybody’s sleep schedules were fractured and jumbled. The crews for the evening mission tried to sleep in to compensate for the late night ahead. This left a mix of people up and the others sleeping.

Among those up early were Karl and his family along with Garen. Their first order of business was to go over to meet Larrissa and look at the Leary place. Garen played tour guide on the way over, pointing out various landmarks and features along the trail. He took the long way down and around the end of the pastures they could soon be farming.

When they rolled up to Larrissa’s, they were met by Brody.

“Good morning, sir. Momma told us about the new people. I take it these are them?”

Garen had a big smile as he stepped out to greet Brody.

“Brody, this is Karl, his wife Isadora, their daughter Karen and her husband David, and their daughter Hera.”

As Garen was making introductions, Ruby and Ashley stepped around the corner.

“Hi, Garen.” Ruby turned to Ashley. “Ashly, go tell momma that Garen is hear with the new neighbors.”

“OK, Ruby.” Ashley ran inside. Ruby turned back to the group of people standing there.

“Ashley and I were going down to work the goats.”

Hera’s eyes lit up.

“Goats!” she turned to Karen and David. “Mom! They got goats!” Karen and David smiled at the enthusiasm of their little girl. So did Ashley. She looked up at Karen and David.
“Ma’am, if it’s ok with you, she can come down to the goats with us while you guys talk to momma.”

At this Hera was practically jumping up and down.

“Can I? Can I? Can I?”

David rested an arm across Karen’s shoulders and smiled. Karen looked up at him and down at their little girl.

“Hera, can you promise not to use your arm too much and hurt it again?” Karen said, knowing the unintentional lie coming.

“I’ll be good! I won’t forget my arm!” At this, Karen looked over at Ruby.

“Ruby, she has stitches in her shoulder and shouldn’t be using very much yet. If you can try to keep her out of trouble, she can go.” At the permission, Hera squealed, jumping up and down. Ruby smiled.

“I will remind her. When Ashley comes out, could you tell her we went to the goat barn?”

“Sure thing.” David answered.

The two girls walked off down the hill towards one of the outbuildings. The group could hear snippets of the conversation, mostly from Hera.

“We used to have goats and sheep where we lived, until the mean old sherriff came and took them. That’s when we went to live with Grandpa Karl.” Ans so on and so on as they walked down the hill.

Karl looked at Isadora and nodded thoughtfully. Isadora looked from where Ruby and Hera were walking down the hill over to Garen.

“They seem like good kids.”

“They are. They had some tough times right after the quake and had some real shitty things happening to them before we met them. Brody is basically running the place with Ruby and with their mom’s guidance and knowledge.” Garen replied to Isadora.

David was thinking as he watched Ruby and Hera enter the goat barn.

“I know Hera would like having some goats around. Hopefully we can come up with some livestock again. Sheep and goats are great to have, and useful too.”

Garen was about to say something else when Larrissa came out the door, followed by Ashley and Finn. Larrissa spoke as she walked out.

“Ashley, take Finn and go help Ruby with the goats, then the chickens. I need to talk to Garen and our new neighbors.”

“Yes, momma.” Ashly turned to Finn. “Come on, Finn. Time to go juggle some eggs.” The young pair walked off towards the goat barn where Ruby and Hera went.

About this time, Brody stepped out of the house and joined his mother.

“Mom, I’ll go take care of chores while you guys talk.” Brody nodded his head at the group before walking off towards one of the other buildings.

“Hi, I’m Larrissa. I see you have met all the others. Come on inside so we can be comfortable and talk a spell.”

Sounds like they will get along.

Thank you.
Kids, thank God, adapt well and most country folk I know (including both sides of my family) were pretty accepting based on 'who's your folks'? & 'you vouch for him/them'? They preceded RR on 'Trust but verify' though.

Of course if it came to pass those queries were less-than-truthfully answered, it was likely to be a tough season for someone. I know in my parents' case, one-and-done was a hard & fast rule.

Andrea was a little tense and frustrated. Correction, a lot frustrated. She was out in the living room with the radios while Kara was in with Sabine. Kara had been in there for almost an hour, talking about god knows what with Sabine! Sabine wore out easily still and that was an hour she wouldn’t have with her. To make matters worse, Andrea didn’t even know what they were talking about because they were talking in French! Finally, Kara came out of the room and closed the door behind her.

“Sabine is napping right now, but her vital signs and such are looking up. Hopefully we can pull the chest tube in a couple of days. She knows better than any of us what she has in store as far as recovery but you know medics make the worst patients.” Kara said walking over to Andrea

“What were you two babbling about?” Andrea was still bristling, even though part of her was overjoyed at the good prognosis. Then she saw tear streaks down Kara’s cheeks.

“Sabine was clearing up some very bad misconceptions I had from long ago.” Kara said. Her tone flatly closed the door on that topic to Andrea. Kara’s voice changed again at her next question.

“Did you see where Angelique and Zed ran off to?”

Andrea was caught off guard again by the shift in topics.

“They went downstairs to do something Angelique called ‘bounce checks’ or something. Then they were going to take the stuff up to the garage to haul down to the training building.”

“I better go see what I missed.”

Kara took off towards the stairs, leaving Andrea confused by most of what Kara had said. She decided to focus on the part where she said Sabine is getting better.

Sabine lay there half asleep, her mind floating on the pain meds. Kara alive! After so many years thinking she was dead alongside her brother! If only she had known! She could have been, hell would have been at her side when she was shipped to Germany then the states to recover! She could have helped Kara through it, and Kara could have helped her though it as well!

She might not have married that jackass, sparing herself years of torment and maybe even her soul. All those years, picturing Kara and Christian happy together in Heaven. Not knowing Kara was, like her, living in torment and agony here on earth, Kara away from Christian, floundering, alone and herself, with no one who knew her before her marriage and supporting her, caring about her.

What a miserable pair they made! They survived though. Each of them had survived their personal tribulations.

She knew she needed to rest. It would take some time for her to make progress towards healing. Her left hand absentmindedly rubbed her stomach as she drifted off to sleep.

Kara walked into the workshop downstairs looking for Zed and Angelique. They weren’t there, but Heidi was.

“Hey, Heidi. Did you see where Zed and Angelique went?”

“They headed down to the training building about twenty minutes ago. What’s up?”

“I was just trying to find out what they were doing so I could help.” She looked at what Heidi was doing. Heidi was dumping something into one of the brass tumblers over on the far side of the room.

“What are you up to?”

Heidi looked up from what she was doing. “I’m dumping some of the spent disintegrating links from the MG3 into the tumbler to clean. The stuff from this last trip we scooped up is ok, but Garen had a bucket load from out in the woods with rust and stuff on it. We want to try reloading the belts since nobody knows where we can get any more belted ammo.”

Kara vaguely remembered Garen talking about that some time ago. Whatever.

“So I saw you with Doug holding hands and on the daybed again last night. I take it things are going well?”

Heidi blushed just a little as she responded.

“Yeah, things are going ok.”

“Well Garen told me he was going to be on radio watch tonight and with me gone, you two can use the big bed and have some privacy, a rare commodity around here lately.” Kara smirked and wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, making Heidi blush more.

“Well, tell him we appreciate the offer but there’s nothing more than snuggling going on for now.” Heidi told her, slightly embarrassed by this line of conversation.

“Really? Why?” Heidi was surprised. Kara seemed genuinely confused by her response.

“Well, we are taking things slow. We don’t want to jump straight to the sex.” She still didn’t understand why she was discussing her sex plans with Kara. “We want to make it something enjoyed and not something rushed. We figure we will wait for more until we get back to the cabin.”

“I guess that makes sense. We were just trying to be helpful.”

“Oh no! We really appreciate the thought!” Heidi said quickly at Kara’s hurt expression. “It’s just…” Heidi didn’t quite know how to explain, but she would try. “It’s been so long for both of us….We don’t want to screw it up.”

“I think I understand, but I also think you might be overthinking it. You two have deep feelings for each other, otherwise you wouldn’t be worried about it. Let your feelings guide your bodies. You will be fine.”

Heidi shook her head a little, trying to organize her thoughts.

“I know all that rationally, Kara, but this is the first person I have thought about sleeping with like this, with this long term commitment thing, since my husband.” Heidi decided to shift the topic off of her. “Besides, I wouldn’t feel right getting it on in your, Garen and Bekka’s bed.” Heidi grinned as she delivered that one, especially as Kara opened her mouth to say something once or twice and nothing came out.

“Yeah, that’s another part about you guys that confuses me. I don’t understand the whole you in bed naked with Garen without a care in the world, and apparently Bekka not having a problem with it, or you in bed with her and him not having a problem with it. When I got up, Garen had his arm across your naked body, just snoring away. “

“It’s not like that.” Kara started backpedaling some.

“It’s not like what?” Heidi was smiling now, happy the focus was off her.

“The three of us, it’s not sexual.” Kara began, searching for her words.

“OK, not sexual. So what is it?”

“Complicated. It’s complicated.”

“I bet. So how does this ‘complicated but not sexual’ thing work?” Heidi’s curiosity not letting her drop the whole thing. She had too many questions built up over the past few months and felt better asking and talking about them with Kara than Garen or Bekka.

Kara took a deep breath. What to say, how to say it? Her mind was already dwelling on such things after her long talk with Sabine a few minutes ago.

“If it wasn’t for Garen and Bekka, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Hell, I wouldn’t be alive. They have saved my life physically multiple times, spiritually a couple more and emotionally a thousand times over.”

Heidi was silent as she felt the shift in the room as Kara talked. What started out as a deflection from talking about herself and Doug just went all kinds of dark and serious. Kara started again.

“They began shaping me physically and mentally from the moment they met me when I joined their unit. They always pushed me to be better, stronger, smarter, and faster. But it wasn’t like they were trying to change me. They excepted me for me, I was ok for them my face, my clothes, the way I walked, talked, the things I like to do, they never tried to make a “girl” out of me, I was what I was and it was ok with them. They never wanted to change what was me or my personality. They didn’t try to do these things because they wanted something from me either.” Kara took a breath as she collected herself to continue.

“Part parent, part friend, part lover, part co-conspirator, its complex. Kind of like a spouse, but not. If either wanted sex from me, I would gladly do so in a heartbeat, but that’s not what they want, and would never ask. It is their connection. If sex was what I needed from them, they would oblige, but I would never ask. I have only had that level of connection with one other person, and he’s dead. If either Bekka or Garen needed a heart transplant and mine would work, I would kill myself so they could have it. Christian started to explain it once but I…… ” Tears were streaming down Kara’s face.

“I’m sorry I pried, Kara. I didn’t mean to upset you.” Heidi came toward Kara. Kara wiped her eyes and took a step back.

“It’s ok, I was already…..Don’t worry about it.” Kara wiped her eyes again with her sleeve. “You treasure the moments you can with Doug, however you choose to. You know better than most how what you thought you had can be cut short in an instant.”

Kara looked around the room quickly. Spotting her pack on top of one of the bins, she grabbed it and headed for the door. As she left, she spoke over her shoulder.

“I’m heading down to the training building to find Zed and Angelique. See you later.”

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Paige was sitting in the driver’s seat, trying to come up with anything else she needed to fix or change or add. She had spent months preparing the Cherokee and the Land Cruiser for their drive. This was all of thirty-six to forty-eight hours in a vehicle new to her, with people she has known for all of maybe a week.

She couldn’t come up with any other things vehicle-wise she could do in the short time she had left. She would focus next on her personal gear. After the events at the farm, she wanted to be a bit more prepared if it came to a fight. She talked quite a bit with her grandfather about expectations if they had to abandon the vehicle.

The very topic seemed to upset him. He tried to reassure her about how it shouldn’t be necessary. All it took was her reminding him of why they were going out in the first place to redirect his response.

“Paige, I don’t think it will be needed, but if, IF for some reason, God forbid, you guys have to bail out and run, well if it’s on the way to the pickup, follow Kara’s lead. On the way out, follow Bekka’s lead. Both of them have real honest to God escape and evasion military training.” He thought a moment more, a very somber look on his face.

“If it’s just you, stay stealthy and get to one of the two rally points. We will come get you.”

After this conversation, she set about getting her personal kit together. She still had most of what she needed as far as weapons, magazines, and other types of survival gear. They were still in the bag Henrik packed them in for each of them. She knew she didn’t need to add a sleeping bag. She had Henrik’s coat on the back of the driver’s seat. She had been using it as a blanket, sleeping wrapped up in it. She had the sleeves pulled up double and when she wore it, the hem brushed her boot tops.

She had her 1911 on her side, one of the silenced ARs from her Spec Ops friends, her gear and a strong 4x4. The last steps were adjusting the NVGs and cleaning the windshield inside and out.

Paige was cleaning the windshield when Zed and Angelique came into the bay with their gear for the mission. Zed would be sitting behind Paige and Angelique would be sitting behind Kara, who would be in the front passenger seat helping navigate. They came to that arraignment taking into consideration Kara had the most experience working and driving with night vision goggles among them. The spare med kit Angelique built went into the seat between her and Zed.

“OK, Paige, what can we help do?” Zed asked.

“Well, all the tools, recovery gear and such are already loaded. There is a duffle bag on the roof rack full of rope rescue and personnel recovery stuff. All the fluids and fuel have been checked. I got two sets of maps from my grandfather and Garen, so…I think all that is left is your crew’s gear.” Paige said.

“Where’s everybody else?” Angelique said looking around the bay. It looked emptier than it was yesterday.

“Garen, Emilia and my grandfather are over helping Karl and the bunch move stuff into the house down the hill. Evidently there is a pair of huge barns as part of that property and they can tuck the vehicles over there and unload into the house from there. Allyson is upstairs working on dinner.” Paige hated to admit it, but she felt a little better with Karl and his family settling in somewhere instead of being right here. She still felt guilty for bringing all her drama into their life and destroying their farm and getting their son killed.

“Well, if you don’t need help, I’m going to go upstairs and see if I can help Allyson.” Zed said as he started towards the back of the bay.

“If you have another squirt bottle, I can help knock out the rest of the windows.” Angelique said to Paige.

I can't wait to see how those ambushing bastards get their asses kicked!!
In a perfect PAW scenario, there'd be a squadron of A10s in hardened aircraft shelters and a suitable Arsenal of ordinance plus fuel but this author is much more realistic about what survivors will have to work with so I think the M3 & any 203s they might have will have to suffice. I fully expect some improvisation of appropriate levels of destruction to be deployed though:devilish:.

I should also point out this response should be No Quarter; the mob in the park, the under Sheriff et al & these latest aggressors all share attributes of ruthless evil so leaving them to reform, regroup is potentially fatal going forward.

It seems like the disloyal opposition has done a really good job of marginalizing the most creative sectors of our population.

You know the ones that ask the question; "What if we....?" and then grabs an acetylene torch and some scrap metal or a few circuit boards and head to the workbench. The ones who ignore those saying "but this is the way it's always been done!" or "No way. It can't be done.". Then do it anyway.

The irony is those marginalized don't care. It will be interesting what they come up with given sufficient encouragement.

Heidi came into the bay where Paige and Angelique were cleaning windshields. They had finished on the Suburban and had moved over to Allyson’s truck.

“Hey, where is everyone?”

“Most of them are over helping move stuff into Mrs. Leary’s house. Zed and Allyson are upstairs cooking.” Angelique said as she wiped the passenger window.

“Did Kara go over to Leary’s or did she go upstairs?”

“Haven’t seen Kara since we left the house.” Angelique said, a puzzled look on her face.

Heidi dumped her ‘extras’ pack into the bed of the truck and clipped it into one of the tie down rings. Kara said she was coming down here, yet she isn’t here was the thought and question rolling through her head. Angelique saw the look.

“What’s up Heidi? Something with Kara?”

Heidi didn’t want to air Kara’s conversation out with others.

“Nothing really, just something I thought of when I was talking to her earlier.” Heidi thought she knew where to find her.

Heidi walked over to the pond. As she approached, she saw Kara laying on the huge chunk of granite by the pond. Heidi stood there a moment, watching her. She looked like she was asleep so she wasn’t sure she wanted to disturb her.

“Anything important, Heidi?” Kara said without moving from where she was.

Heidi wondered how she did that. She hadn’t said anything, she was behind her so she couldn’t see her, so how did she know it was her?

“I was wanting to check up on you. I didn’t mean to upset you with my questions.”

“I know. I was already off balance when I came downstairs and you just plucked the sensitive string, that’s all. We are good.”

“You sure, Kara?” Heidi kept walking closer and was now on the edge of the rock looking down at Kara. She couldn’t read the expression on her face. Kara sat up.

“Yeah, I’m sure.” Kara took a few deep deliberate breaths and opened her yes. “You remember me telling you about Christian?”

Oh Shit, Heidi thought. “Yeah?” she said hesitantly.

“You remember me telling you at Karl’s about how important it was to get Sabine out of there and back to here, right?”

Heidi was getting mental whiplash with the sudden shifts and changes in direction of Kara’s mental track.

“I remember.”

“Sabine is Christian’s little sister.”

Heidi felt like the rock beneath her feet was jerked out from under her. It showed on her face, evidently, as well.

“Yeah, Heidi. That’s how I felt when I saw her laying there, hurt, hell dying! The only other person in the world Christian cared about, the person he tried to protect, and there she was in front of me.”

“No wonder you were a bit off!” Heidi said barely above a whisper.

“Yeah. I hadn’t heard from her, or anyone else from Christian’s family since the day of…Since the day.” Kara took a deep breath and swallowed hard before continuing. “I figured it was because they hated me and blamed me for getting him killed. Hell, why not? I blamed me.”

Heidi could hear it in Kara’s voice that she still blamed herself.

“Come to find out, they were told I was killed along with him. That’s why Sabine never reached out to me. He loved her so much and talked about how he knew we would get along great and everything, about how she was so excited to meet me since he told her so much about me.” Kara sat and stared at her hands a minute.

“Turns out we both lost two people that day. The years we lost not knowing or mistaken. We could have helped each other through so much.” Kara’s voice was soft and weak, barely above a whisper herself. Kara shook herself some and took another big deep breath and turned to Heidi.

“I had just come from talking about some of this with her when we talked in the basement. That’s why I had to come out here and clear my head some and refocus. I have to be…settled and clear-headed for what Angelique and I have to do with Zed tonight.”

“Now it makes more sense.” Heidi said. “Do you need anything, can I get you something? Zed and Allyson are cooking right now.”

“No, I’m good. I’ll be in shortly. Oh, don’t go into this with people if you would. I don’t know how much Sabine has told anyone else. Let it be her choice on when or how much or even if she wants others to know any of this.”

Thanks CCG! Off to go look-up what Sabine said about her parents... I don't recall it being warm and fuzzy... and her brother. Hmmm.... Thanks!

...and Happy Anniversary! Bright blessings for many many more.
