I tried looking back through the story but could not find the reference. Is "Sabine" Christians sister??? Kara would have probably recognized her, if they had met. But, maybe I am just putting together links that aren't really there.

Given the many characters, their details and the interwoven back drop CCG has created (& keeps adding to) I completely understand how one can get turned around in here. The best remedy I've found is to re-read; all-in-all, not such a terrible thing :)

Sabine was floating in a haze. She could kind of see. She saw a beautiful angel, the light glowing around her. She tried to remember what happened. The last thing she remembered was the gunshots. Oh No! She must have died! Andrea! How could she leave now! Andrea needed her! She could hear her Priest growing up tell her ‘God has a plan. Have Faith.’ Would it be wrong to ask St Joan to look after those she left behind? She remembered his other lesson; ‘God hears all prayers. Sometimes the answer is no’

She tried to speak. Why was it so hard? She tried again. She thought she heard herself. She was so tired. She saw the angel back away out of her vision. She didn’t understand.

You sent an angel to get me back.Saint Joan of Arc, I thank you for all that you have done for me and for all that you have interceded on my behalf. Please help Andrea with my loss. Where is my brother?

Sigh, thank you CCG!

Another face came into view. She was much taller. It was another blond ‘angel’? Her face was more drawn. Where the first angels face was full of hope, this second one was a mix of emotions. The smile on her face was melancholy. There was a touch of worry too. As she focused more on the face, she started to see other details. Why would an angel wear a tank top?

“Suis-je mort?”

The ‘Angel’ shook her head gently side to side. She leaned closer and placed her hand on her chest. It felt warm. It also seemed to be trembling some. She spoke to Sabine, in English.

“No, Jeanne. You are not dead and I promise I will do everything within my power to keep you that way.”

Now Sabine was confused. English? And Jeanne? What the? Who? The ‘Angel’ was talking again.

“I know you must hate me forever, but I will do everything I can for you.” She said with a voice full of sadness.

Who was this person and where was she?

“Who are you?” Sabine asked, in English.

Tears rimed the angel’s eyes and she clutched the dog tags around her neck. Sabine thought she caught a glimpse of a ring as well. She looked harder at her face, squinting. It couldn’t be. She was dead. Did that mean she was dead as well? Her hand went to her own throat, clutching her own tags.

“Are you sure I’m not dead? You’re dead. They told us you died with him!”

The angel shook her head again. “You’re not dead, and neither am I.”

Her voice was weak through choking sobs. “God! He loved you so much. He told me so much about you.”

The two sat holding each other’s hands and cried.

Kara leaned down after Heidi straightened up. She looked down at Jeanne. Even all banged up, and all these years later, she could still see the smiling girl from the pictures Christian had in his wallet. She had such a big smile! She looked so full of hope in her picture from her Harvard Graduation and such a fierce warrior in her dress uniform from Basic Training.

He told her about Jeanne being so full of life and love. He told Kara about how much Jeanne was looking forward to meeting her. That was part of what hurt so much after he died. She was in the hospital for so long and never heard from her either in the hospital or the many years that followed.

Kara figured Christian’s family blamed her, hated her. She couldn’t blame them either. She blamed herself as well.

“Suis-je mort?”

Jeanne spoke to her. She had to answer her.

Kara shook her head gently side to side. She leaned closer and placed her hand on Jeanne’s chest. She noticed she was trembling a little.

“No, Jeanne. You are not dead and I promise I will do everything within my power to keep you that way.”

Kara took a shuddering breath, then continued. She owed it to Christian, even if Jeanne hated her.

“I know you must hate me forever, but I will do everything I can for you.” She said with a voice full of sadness.

“Who are you?” Jeanne asked.

Who are you? Who are you? Tears rimed Kara’s eyes and she clutched the dog tags around her neck.

Jeanne squinted as she clutched her own necklace of tags.

“Are you sure I’m not dead? You’re dead. They told us you died with him!”

Oh God! They thought she was dead as well! Then…then… She shook her head again. She had to help her.

“You’re not dead, and neither am I.” Her voice was weak through choking sobs. “God! He loved you so much. He told me so much about you.”

Kara reached over and took Jeanne’s hands as they cried.

After a few moments, Kara got herself under control. There were things to do.

“Jeanne or Sabine?”

“Sabine” She said flatly.

“Sabine, before I let Heidi tell Paige and Andrea you are awake, since you are a medic,” Kara paused and snorted. “Medic hell, you were half way through med school, anyway, You took several rounds in your right side, they went through your plural space at an upward angle, coming out just under the edge of your scapula. The main damage seemed to be muscle on the way out but the pneumothorax was really bad. Paige darted you four times, but I have a chest tube in you now. They put several bags of Hextend into you. I added two units of blood and a bag of ringers when I got here. I dropped an NG tube so we could pump some calories and more liquid into you. I put a Foley in for the ins and outs. IV antibiotics are on board as well. Now that you are awake some, I’ll start looking at pain management as well.”

Sabine listened to all of this. She was trying to catch up to what Kara was saying. One lung down, chest tube, fluids, it all sounded doable and survivable. That still didn’t answer things like where were they and so forth. Wait, Kara was talking again.

“So I’ll limit them to one at a time since we still have to keep out the bad guys and such. I’m sure you want Andrea first.”

Andrea! Did Andrea get hit? Is she ok? Sabine couldn’t organize the words in her head fast enough to speak coherently but she tried. She nodded her head to Kara’s question or statement about Andrea first and managed to make her brain and mouth say something, anything, about the biggest things she was worried about. It was hard. She was still so tired. It came out as kind of a, Andrea sounding croak.

Kara could make out Andrea and something else. She had to lean down to hear better.

“What was that second half Sabine?”

“Pregnant” Sabine managed to say the second time.

Kara got a big smile on her face and patted Sabine’s shoulder.

“That’s ok, I already knew that. Garen’s rule number three of Foley Catheters- Any girl gets a Foley, gets a dipstick done. You just rest a moment and I will get Andrea for you.”

Kara tried to get up but Sabine had a vice-like grip on her hand and a puzzled look on her face.

It took a while but Bekka and Doug got into a groove once Doug started locking on to the tasks at hand. This also helped calm Bekka down a little, not that she would admit she was stressed.

Doug was using the little green lip light on his microphone to see the map and cross referencing the GPS, he was able to keep a fairly good location fix.

As darkness closed in, Allyson slowed down some. This let Bekka, who had already transitioned to her goggles, catch up lost ground. Finally, Allyson had to concede to the darkness.

“Viking six, Scarlet three eight.” Angelique’s voice came over the radio.

“Viking six” was Doug’s short reply.

“Three eight, requesting lead swap and refueling point.”

“Copy three eight, coming up on your right for lead swap.”

As Bekka came up beside the truck, Doug could see Allyson and Angelique in the cab of the truck, focusing on their driving. He looked back down at his map. There were several preselected waypoints to choose from for their refueling stop. Bekka wanted to top off the tanks around the halfway point to keep at least a hundred miles of flat out full throttle available when they get to Kara’s location. This would be an easy thing for Allyson in the truck, they had much bigger fuel capacity compared to Bekka’s Subaru.

Doug looked over at Bekka.

“Waypoint six is in three miles, Scenic overlook on the right. That work?”

“Yup. Let them know. Oh, and remind them to pull up shielding your side, that’s where the fuel filler is.”

Doug was back on the radio. Three Eight, Waypoint six in two miles, on the right. Upon arrival, take up line abreast position, offset to the right.”

“Copy” Came Angelique’s reply.

Doug looked back at Bekka.

“Bekka, I’m sorry I was out of it when we started. It was just…I overloaded and didn’t know where to start.”

Bekka could tell he was sincerely sorry. She also felt a little guilty snapping at him like she did, but he needed it.

“Doug, I know. It takes time and experience to go into combat mode at the flip of a switch. I was hoping I could snap you out of it and get you on task.”

Moments later, the sign for the overlook came into view. More than just a wide spot in the road like most of them, this overlook was a small turnout leading to a round parking lot, like a cul-de-sac. Bekka pulled in and made a U-turn, so the Subaru was facing the way back to the road.

Allyson pulled the truck in beside the Subaru. Everyone got out. A couple of cans of fuel went into the Subaru. While Bekka and Allyson talked about road conditions and illumination levels, Doug and Angelique compared notes on the map and route. One of the things they were especially attentive for was any possible points to scavenge fuel on the way back.

Fuel, stretch, pee, and night vision goggles and such adjusted, they were quickly back on the road, Bekka in the lead and setting the pace.

100 MPH cross country was a YeeHaaw run for me, in daylight & dry weather. In pitch dark, using NVG, I can only imagine; sphincter puckering, I'm sure.

“How bad was Andrea hit if she had to have a Foley?”

Sabine’s voice was stronger and had a harsh, demanding tone to it. Kara was a bit startled at this.

“Andrea wasn’t hit at all. She doesn’t have a Foley, only you.”

“But…You said…” Sabine was quiet for a moment. She looked up and locked eyes with Kara. “Can you check again?”

Now Kara understood, she thought.

“You didn’t know you were pregnant but Andrea is pregnant?”

Sabine nodded her head.

“We knew Andrea was, but I didn’t suspect me too.” Sabine said, but even as the words came out, she thought back to all the signs she should have caught.

Sabine’s system was always a bit irregular, especially in times of stress. This was something she considered convenient at times. Now, she saw how it tricked her. Her body also hid other signs. The first time she was pregnant, she barely showed until into her second trimester. She never had morning sickness.

Damn! This was nowhere near the plan! Well, at least she knew the exact day of conception!

“Let me be the one to tell Andrea.”

“Sure”

I think I need a neck brace after that hairpin curve...

Thank you.
I know precisely what you mean! I was thinking of getting a 5-point race harness w/ a helmet stabilizer attached to my chair but he doesn't always ab-sail us off the cliff face so, that would be a mite cumbersome. I saw an ad for an old leaning side hack though; might make a good stabilizer :)
