I would prefer a CCG med kit. With all the bells and whistles!
Great idea but I'd need a couple of years training to get up to speed to even try to use those tools w/ anything approaching proficiency. At my age & w/ my diagnoses, a Tee-shirt or maybe a ball cap is it but for those of you w/ more time left, that would be a great idea (suitable logo attached, of course :))

Andrea, Paige, Kara and Heidi were all standing inside the kitchen by the back door. Heidi was the first to speak.

“Somebody got a towel? I don’t want to drip on everything.”

“Holy Shit! Are there only two of you?” Andrea blurted out. “It sounded like a full-scale assault force out there!”

“Yeah, only two of us, kid. Which one of you is Sprout, I mean Paige?” Kara answered.

“I’m Paige.”

“Great! Glad to meet you! So, you have bad guys surrounding you, and wounded in need of treatment. We are here to help. I’m Kara and my vicious sidekick here is Heidi. She is an Airbase Ground Defense and Combat Specialist. I’m a medic. So, Heidi is going to make the most of keeping the bad guys from getting us while I work on the casualties. We have reinforcements coming, we just have to hold on until they arrive.”

Paige heard the same forceful overwhelming attitude she heard over the radio. These two seemed to have it all figured out. While Kara was talking, Paige got a better look at their equipment. These two were a strange mix of full-on combat gear and something else she couldn’t put her finger on. None of that mattered right now though. They were here to help, and Kara said she was a medic. Paige turned to Andrea.

“Andrea, show Heidi around and make introductions. I’m taking Kara to the wounded.”

Kara had her aid bag on her shoulder as she followed Paige to what turned out to be the den just off the kitchen. In the den was an older lady holding a child and a woman lying on the coffee table. Kara heard Paige speaking but her eyes were on the casualties.

“Kid took a round in the shoulder. We packed it with combat gauze and she seems stable. The other one, she is a lot worse. Took several rifle rounds to the side, lots of torn stuff on their way out. I got it packed off and wrapped up but I’ve had to needle decompress four times, each one hasn’t helped as much as the one before. We remembered how to do IVs and got some fluid in, but she is hurt really bad. Tell me you can do more.”

Paige was looking at Sabine while she described her injuries. When she was done, she looked over at Kara hopefully. Kara was just staring down at Sabine. The room was silent for a few awkward moments.

Kara knelt down gently then pulled back the casualty blanket from Sabine, a very focused and unreadable look on her face. She placed one hand flat on Sabine’s chest just below her throat. After a few seconds, Kara looked over at Paige.

“As soon as Heidi gets a snapshot of our situation, I need her here.”

Kara dropped the med bag down on the floor next to Sabine and started flinging open pouches and compartments.

Heidi was trying to take in all the names and people she was meeting. No, correction, she was trying to look like she was taking in all the names. What she was really doing was trying to boil everything down to things like how many adults, and of these, how many combatants. She was evaluating as much of the layout as she could as they went. She was looking into their faces, trying to gauge …. something? Their resolve, their fatigue factor? In a moment of clarity she had it. She was trying to measure their usefulness for the coming fight.

Each exhibited their qualities in different ways. Karen was full of rage and viciousness, Kevin’s anger is different, it’s mixed with resentment and some other emotion she wasn’t sure of. David has that European strange dichotomy of seeming reservedness yet she could tell he was ready to unleash given the opportunity. Penny was out of her depth for most of this so was resorting to the ‘how can I help’ coping mechanism for the most part, she has a redhead’s temper but doesn’t know what to do with it. Isadora is trying to be the rock, the foundation. Right now she is trying to help with the wounded granddaughter so the others can do other things. Heidi knew she would probably shift Isadora to something else for a bit since Paige is in with the wounded now.

Karl is trying to be the solid patriarch. He was trying to keep people thinking and quell the panic. Heidi could see it in his eyes Karl was scared and working hard not to show it. Andrea wasn’t sure what to do or which direction to go but was ready to fight or anything else they needed.

That left Paige. Paige… The whole reason they came out here. Paige was trying to maneuver things and people by doing everything she could for them. She had a very matter-of-fact flat presence Heidi wasn’t sure about. She had seen this before in a few, very few, people she had been in combat with. It was a strange sense Paige was disconnected from the effects of the events going on around her. Not oblivious, more like resigned and unconcerned about herself, only about her people determined to protect her people and getting them out alive.

Paige came up to her while she was finishing her tour and told her Kara needed her with the casualties. Not a good sign thought Heidi as she cut her tour short.

When Heidi walked in, the first thing she noticed was it looked like Kara’s aid bag had exploded all over the floor.

“Good you’re here. I need two things from you.” Kara started without even looking up.

Heidi looked around. Kara and her patient were the only ones in here.

“I thought there were two casualties?”

“I sent the other one with the grandmother to another area. We are going to be doing some invasive and disturbing things they didn’t need to watch.” Kara said as she set out a couple vacuum-packed bundles.

Heidi knelt down next to Kara.

“How is she doing?” Heidi asked while stating at the patient.

“Horrible. I have a lot to do and it may not work.” Kara stopped talking and sat up.

“But we will save her. Period.” Kara’s voice sounded angry now.

“What do I need to do to help?”

“First, hold her still while I put a chest tube in. She has a collapsing right lung. They darted her four times and she is leaking air and blood. Once I get the tube in, we can relieve the pressure. Then we need to give her some blood. We can start with two units from me while we find out if we have any other O- donors.”

“Any other blood type work?”

“No, has to be O-, that’s her blood type. I know mine will work, that’s why we start with mine. The kits have Elden cards so we can test anyone else to make sure before we give her anyone else’s blood.”

“Did you already test hers?”

“No, checked her tags.” Kara pointed to the casualty’s dog tag bundle on her chest.

“So, chest tube. What help do you need from me? I don’t know how to do one of those.”

Heidi was still trying to process everything Kara was saying, on top of the major part of her brain working out how to defend this place.

“The big thing is to hold her still when I cut and place the tube. After I get the tube in, I’ll need you to hold it in place while I secure it.” Kara was talking while she laying her equipment and painting the casualty’s side with iodine.

Heidi following Kara’s instructions knelt next to Sabine’s left side and reaching across her body, held her hip in place and pulled her right arm across her chest towards her, exposing the incision site. She knew when Kara cut because this unconscious person twitched and pulled against her trying to get away from the pain of the knife.

The incision was between the ribs followed by Kara using forceps to hold the incision open enough to pass the chest tube into the pleural space. She looked over at Heidi.

“Good, now you can let go of her arm and hip. I need you to hold this tube in place and not let it move at all. I need to suction and secure it.”

Heidi fumbled to find the tube, fighting her position and her small wing span. Soon she found her hands guided by Kara‘s. Heidi ended up leaning across and half on Sabine, at least that’s what Paige said her name was. Once again Heidi felt she was holding someone’s life in her hands.

She saw Kara with a turkey baster looking thing with a bag attached. She guessed it was the suction she was talking about. She placed a one-way valve on the end of the tube, followed by the giant bulb syringe suction device. It didn’t take Kara long to get it hooked up to the valve thing and started squeezing vigorously. The tube got warm in her hand and she could hear a wet, slurping sound.

Kara cut a super sticky chest seal to wrap around and secure the tube in place.

Heidi looked at Sabine’s face. She seemed to be more relaxed now. Her face was less pinched.

She looked over at Kara’s face. She still looked worried until she saw Heidi watching, then a grim smile was plastered on her face as she spoke.

“One thing down, a thousand more things to go,” Let’s get this blood drawn so you can get back out there and hold the line.”

And it doesn't seem to matter which wordpro you use; they all seem to have the same issue about sound-alikes. Only solution I've found is to create your own dictionary but talk about tedious....:sht::bhd::sht:

which I do bit by bit, but the wife didn’t catch the other spelling, and it screws with me at work as well

“I really don’t like the idea of you pulling two bags from yourself!” Heidi reiterated.

“Well, I can’t just call the blood bank, can I?” Kara fought back as she set out the stuff for Heidi to pull a unit of blood from her.

“Look, Normally the rule for donating blood is one unit and no strenuous activity for a day or two. Two units can affect your brain!” Heidi countered.

“The Ranger regiment did studies and determined they could donate two units for casualties without losing combat effectiveness!”

“You’re not a two-hundred-seventy-five pound twenty-three-year-old Ranger with two or three other squads of the same supporting you! It’s you, me, Paige, Andrea and some civilians! Plus, kids! I need you combat effective!”

Kara got a strange look in her eyes as she glared over at Heidi. It was a look that worried Heidi some. Kara’s next words worried her more. They also filled her with a strange sense of energy.

“You hear me, Seraphim! There will be absolutely no doubt of my combat effectiveness. My patient will make it out of here, regardless of who or how I have to kill!” Kara took a deep breath. “Now, I need to get blood in Sabine. I have up to two units I can give her. She already has some Hextend on board, but she really needs the red blood cells. We take two units from me, put a liter of Lactated Ringers and a bag of Hextend into me. That will boost my volume back up so I will be fine to fight.”

“What else do we need to do for her?” Heidi knew now she couldn’t fight or dissuade her from what she saw as the medical necessity.

“We get the blood in her first, then I’ll put in a Foley Catheter, then I’ll do a nasogastric tube. Once that’s in place I can add fluids and fuel that way. By that time, you should have the war plan ready.”

The two of them set to work.

Heidi was muttering and talking to herself when she walked into the dining room where most of the people were gathered.

“Hardheaded, overdriven, ****ing blond stubborn ass Amazonian kamikaze bitch!”

Paige was a bit disturbed by Heidi’s tirade as she walked up.

“What’s wrong?”

“My medic has a medic’s attitude! So, I need to know if anyone has O negative blood. Kara’s been working hard at stabilizing and improving Sabine’s condition. We pulled two units of blood from Kara. We need to identify anyone who we can tap if it becomes necessary. We need to get some calories into her. Kara put in a tube so we can pump liquids into her stomach.”

Heidi took a moment to look around the table where everyone was standing.

“Penny, can you work on stuff for Kara while we look at the next steps for the fight?”

Penny got a relieved look on her face. Here was something a bit more up her alley.

“I can do that. I’ll go get with Kara and see what she needs.”

Heidi continued as Penny left.

“How has the perimeter forces adjusted to our arrival? Do we know that yet?”

Karl answered.

“It looks like they have moved some more people around to cover the gaps you two caused. I couldn’t tell how many you guys took off the board.”

“So, they filled back in, but haven’t made a move forward yet. They are probably waiting for full dark, hoping to sneak in better. We need to keep them on edge and off balance.” Heidi was thinking now.

“Karl, would you mind if we remove a couple bricks from the walls in a few places?”

“Not at all. What do you have in mind?” Karl was curious now.

“If a couple of you could pull some bricks about a foot or two above the floor in the best spots for fields of fire. It shouldn’t be too hard if you have a couple of hammers and some screwdrivers. After we have the firing ports, we can move the machine gun around some and fire a burst or two into the positions out front and to the sides. We might make them wonder how many machine guns we have. Maybe that will make them hold off on the attack.”

For the next hour or so, they planned and started making the new firing slots. Heidi was trying to figure out anything else she could do to discourage the attack until her reinforcements got there.

Heidi came into the makeshift infirmary as Penny left, headed for the kitchen with some dishes.

“Hey, is she stabilized enough I can use you now?”

Kara looked up from Sabine to Heidi.

“Depends, what do you need?’

“It’s dark enough for the goggles to work. We need to know if they are using night vision gear as well. We have our lasers and these guys have some as well. I’m putting a spotter up in the cupola and having one person with a laser on each side and the ends of the house paint the positions we know about while the spotter looks for reactions.”

“Sounds like a pretty good way to smoke out the info. What is the next step from there?” Kara was nodding in agreement.

“Well, if we get no reaction, we start using the spotter like an artillery observer to walk the laser onto a target, then we start whittling down the numbers some more or at least keep them buttoned up and a little more jumpy to buy us some time.” Heidi explained.

“You know who we need for this, don’t you?”

“Yeah, Angelique told me all about Bekka’s evil ‘shoot waldo’ training sessions. Well, once we know if the other side can see the lasers or not, we can do the same trick in reverse and lase targets for Allyson, Angelique and Bekka when they get here.”

“Sounds like you have it all figured out.” Kara said in admiration.

“Yeah, all figured out.” Heidi replied sarcastically. “All figured out only works until the bad guy gets to vote on the plan as well. Remember, they had it all figured out when they surrounded the place and look where that got them.”

“They aren’t going to win.” Kara said flatly. “So what do you need me to do?”

“I need you on the right front corner to lase positions.”

“OK, Heidi, I can do that.” Kara started grabbing her gear and stopped mid motion. “Heidi, If anything goes horrendously wrong, promise me you will get Sabine out of here and up to Garen. He can fix her.”

“Is there something I need to know?” Heidi was taken aback by Kara’s request and tone.

“Not right now, but promise me.”

Heidi heard Kara was a bit choked up and fighting hard to control her voice. Unsure of what else to say or do, she simply answered.

“I promise, Kara.”

Penny came back into the infirmary to find Kara and Heidi all geared up and waiting for her. Kara spoke.

“Penny, I have to go do some stuff. Keep an eye on Sabine. Anything changes, give a shout.”

Before Penny could ask any questions, Kara and Heidi walked out of the room.

Heidi was in the cupola. She was trying to stay unobtrusive. She could see the handiwork from earlier. The thing looked like Swiss cheese from all the bullet holes. She was trying to both get a better lay of their perimeter and see what the bad guys had as far as tech. She spoke into her radio.

“Alright, Karl. You first. Point out the positions you knew about with the laser. Don’t forget to keep the barrel of the weapon inside. We need it to be based on the laser alone, not on them seeing a rifle.”

“I remember” came Karl’s reply.

Moments later, a long thin pencil beam of light appeared in Heidi’s goggles lancing out from the left front corner area of the house. He pinpointed several cars visible from his position.

“There were a few deputies in these positions out front, but they have gotten less bold since the two who came in were dumped back out the window in a heap.”

Heidi saw the laser shift over towards the front gate, playing over the cruiser blocking the gate. She knew it would take a lot of effort to move it, and it wouldn’t move under its own power any more. Karen had killed it where it sat with several high powered magnum rounds to the engine.

Heidi thought she saw a scurry of movement there as soon as the laser started dancing around the car. Bingo! They had at least one active night vision device there.

“OK, Karl, shut it off, Kara, you are next.”

On cue, a beam lanced out from the right side, probing cars and hiding spots. Heidi spotted movement away from the laser in at least one spot as well. Damn!

“Paige, your turn.”

Kara’s laser shut off and Paige’s lit up. The rear left beam swept over the fence line. Though the rain, she could see it playing over several cars and hillocks. As the laser moved, she didn’t see any movement.

“OK, you’re up Andrea.”

Paige’s laser shut down and Andrea’s came on. The beam was refracted and danced crazily over broken glass and holes in the vehicles Heidi had dumped rounds into when Kara and she drove in. She saw a small amount of movement as the laser moved around point to point.

“Got it. All lasers off. Be right down and we can plan the next steps.”

Heidi swept her gaze all around the farm one more time before she climbed down. Damn! She had some work to plan.

Thanks. Lots of tension, and what’s going on in her head that she not telling Heidi?
A vision of her demise in battle? She's been keen on ending her pain and joining her lamented, long dead lover - only a guess and very trite.
I doubt ComCamGuy has anything so predictable in mind :)

We'll see soonish as this well thought out battle prep can't carry on much longer; Der Hammer kommt!

“That’s it?! ‘Advon linkup accomplished. Will brief Crusader flight on arrival’. What does that even mean? Why didn’t they say more? What’s going on there?” Emilia was bouncing off the walls at this point.

A few moments after the radio call of ‘Archangel Inbound’ they got a cryptic radio call by Kara on the CSAR designated frequency. All it said was ‘Advon linkup accomplished. Will brief Crusader flight on arrival’. After this call, Garen relaxed a tiny bit and so did Jesse. Zed looked confused but took his cue from Garen and Jesse this was a good message. Emilia wasn’t as reassured and said so quite vocally.

Garen knew Emilia was worried. Her mother was going into an encircled farm and staying to fight the enemy until the others arrived to rescue them. Of course she is stressed out. He had to try and calm her some, unfortunately, not his strong suit.

“Look, all it means is they got to the house and have linked up with Paige and the rest of them. If they knew more, they would tell us. Help is on its way and will be there real soon. Not hearing a bunch on the radio is normal. I would be more worried if they told us a bunch of stuff. Right now we need to focus on getting things ready in case they call back and have a lot of wounded we need to go get. Don’t get too worried yet.”

Emilia seemed to relax a little at Garen’s explanation.

“You would tell me if we needed to worry, right? You wouldn’t lie to me about it.”

Garen could hear it in her voice. She needed someone to tell her it was going to be alright. He knew, however, he couldn’t lie to her in this.

“It’s smart to worry a little. I’m worried. Jesse is worried. Zed is worried. I’m saying try not to worry a whole bunch right now. Right now, we need to get things ready. We need to have our focus in case they need us. We need to channel that fear and worry into productive energy so we can do the most we can if the call comes.”

Garen hoped he was able to set her at ease somewhat and put the best face on it, because he was a little scared himself and horribly frustrated he wasn’t going to be there to help fix things if and when it might go all wrong.

honestly? Needing an outlet for PTS and anxiety. A great Shrink at the VA (shocking I know) helped me get to a gold place and ever since it’s been hard as hell to write any more
I think we'd rather have you whole and stable, as happy in your skin as you can be rather than needing outlets for PTS et al. I am glad to know writing was a help but am happier you're closer to being restored.

Doug wasn’t sure how he hadn’t thrown up yet. They were scooting down the road at a ridiculous speed, Bekka throwing the car left and right. All he could do was hang on and pray they didn’t die. At one point he saw out of his peripheral vision Bekka look over at him. When she saw him glance her way, she growled her first words at him since leaving the compound.

“Either grab one of those bags and puke and get it over with or nut the **** up and get your mind back on task! Either way, you are supposed to be keeping track of where we are on the map and warning me of things coming up!”

Bekka stopped talking for a moment as she was too busy braking, swerving and hitting the gas as they went through a difficult series of turns and switchbacks. Once the road settled down some, she started talking again.

“Look! I need you to do the navigating! At this rate, I will lose them soon. They are faster on the straight stretches and she can carry more speed through the twistys. We need to keep up as much as we can. Soon it will be full dark and we will swap over to NVGs. I have more experience with them and if we aren’t too far back, we can rally up, put some more fuel in my baby here and we can take the lead and still keep a good rate of travel. If they are too far ahead, it won’t make sense for them to stop, and we won’t link back up until we get to the valley rim. Either way, I need you navigating or keeping lookout! FOCUS!”

Doug could tell Bekka was frustrated. He knew she had a competitive streak a mile wide sometimes and not being able to keep up with Allyson rubbed that streak the wrong way.

“OK, Bekka, turn the tunes on and or talk to me to keep my mind off of the fact we are going to die wrapped around a hundred year old oak tree and I will work the maps.”

Allyson looked over at Angelique.

“It’s ****ing loaded already! You’ve checked it four times in the last ten minutes. It was loaded when you set it in the vehicle, it was loaded when you checked it. Nobody else has touched it., and you checked it two more times. Stop! Get on the map and GPS. You are navigator and lookout.”

Allyson knew she came across a bit harsh. She had to soften it up some for her partner’s sake.

“Look, I know it’s a huge adrenaline dump and we are rushing to help our friends. You checked your weapons and the med gear enough when we were preparing and packing for this very thing. What I need you to do is keep us cross-referenced on our location, make the radio calls as we hit the waypoints and stay focused. You got this.”

Angelique looked embarrassed. All she could think of was all the things she might have forgot or screwed up.

“Sorry.”

“Relax, it’s natural, kid” As soon as Allyson said it, she could hear she sounded like Kara when she did. This caused her to chuckle.

“Oh, now you are laughing at me?” Angelique was feeling hurt now and she sounded it.

“No, I was just thinking I was sounding like Kara just now.”

It was quiet in the truck for a few minutes.

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
Everybody was taking a break and resetting things at the house. Penny had some food for everyone to grab as they came through. Isadora was keeping Hera and Olivia in one of the inner rooms to keep them safe and secure. Karen, David and Kevin were on watch. Karl was on radio watch. This left Paige, Kara, Heidi and Andrea to unwind just a little for a minute or two.

Paige was going through the MG3, learning about it in case someone other than Heidi needed to run it. She was trying to keep her focus on the short term. She helped keep everyone alive until help came. She had to count that as a victory. She kept Sabine alive until a real medic got here. She counted that as a huge victory. They still weren’t out of the trap, but their odds have improved. She still had to get Andrea and hopefully Sabine out of this trap. Hopefully Heidi could work a miracle.

Andrea was in with Sabine. All the tubes and beeping machines and such would have worried her yesterday. Today, it’s a sign of hope, Sabine’s color looked better and she seemed to be breathing easier. Andrea kissed her cheek and went back to help Paige sort and prep weapons and ammo for the upcoming fight.

Heidi was in with Sabine while Kara was off to the side sorting through Sabine’s med kit looking for other resources. Heidi was taking the opportunity to dry off some. She had her plate carrier off and was toweling off. She got her t-shirt almost dry and was working on her hair when she thought she heard something.

Heidi looked around for where the sound. She saw Sabine’s lips moving. Heidi went over and leaned down, trying to hear what Sabine was saying. It was faint and she couldn’t make it out so she leaned closer.

“où? J’ai mal. où? J’ai mal. où? J’ai mal. où? J’ai mal.”

Heidi didn’t understand, but speech was a good sign in her mind. She leaned closer, placing her hand on Sabine’s shoulder.

“I’m here, your safe for now. We have you.” Heidi tried to reassure Sabine. She knew it might be tough to wake up with a stranger leaning over her.

Sabine’s voice was soft and wispy which didn’t help Heidi understand what she was saying.

“Tu as envoyé un ange pour me récupérer. Sainte Jeanne d’Arc, je vous remercie de tout ce que vous avez fait pour moi et de tout ce que vous avez intercédé en mon nom.S’il vous plaît aider Andrea avec ma perte. Où est mon frère? ”

Kara looked over and saw Heidi leaning over Sabine. The first thought in Kara’s head was Heidi’s hair looked ridiculous. She was drying it with a towel and it was floating around her head all staticed up into a cloud of blond gold. Then she heard her talking to Sabine and came over in time to hear a string of soft French from Sabine!

Kara was ecstatic! Sabine was bouncing back enough she was talking! She knelt down on the other side of Sabine and took her hand. Kara looked over at Heidi.

“Unless you know French, I got this.” Kara said before looking back down at Sabine.

“I can’t remember enough French to be useful.” Heidi straightened up. “Should I tell the others?”

Kara looked up from Sabine. “Not yet. Let me figure some things out first.”
