Training was going on constantly and the groups were shifting around and moving back and forth with people all over the place. One day one of them was teaching, the next day they were the student. Back and forth it went. One of the topics being taught was combat within urban terrain. Some of them had more training, some had experience, some had both, some had none. This was primarily Heidi and Allyson’s bailiwick but Kara, Garen and Bekka had some alternate lessons to add. Allyson didn’t let on how experienced those three were, especially together.

There was a lot of theory taught, then the movement drills began. They cleared Bekka and Garen’s house. They cleared the garage. They cleared the training building. Again and again this went on with different configurations to the groups, different tactics, different placement in the stacks, different additional problems.

At one point, they started adding casualties to the problem. This presented a whole new set of challenges. When do you treat them? Where do you treat them? Do you drag them back to an earlier cleared and designated casualty collection point or do you drive into the nearest position you can take control of and treat there?

All of this got more difficult when darkness and night vision goggles were thrown into the mix. They had captured enough from the bad guys to equip everyone so night clearing using the goggles was another wrinkle for those unaccustomed to using them.

Most of the group soon realized they didn’t have nearly enough bodies to do any of this by the traditional military model. They were also too few to really do it by SWAT methods either. The bodies just weren’t there for it.

Instead, the concept that morphed into existence was how to clear structures with two to four people. The very thought would send most experienced soldiers into twitching fits. The next layer of difficulty was adding a casualty, either one of the group or one they came across or were there to rescue. All of this made sense to everyone as it went along. This was basically what Heidi and crew did at the main forestry camp, after all.

With all the work and training, Emilia had a much greater appreciation of what her mother did that day down at the camp. Sitting in class with her mother teaching, she also began to feel sorry for all the high school students who never got her mother as a teacher. She was really good at it.

After a whole week of effort and practice, Allyson set up the final scenario. Everyone’s name was placed in a hat. Buddy teams would be pulled randomly to clear an unknown structure as a pair against an unknown number of enemy combatants.

For the unknown structure, they were using Mrs. Leary’s house.

Allyson worked them hard. The first pair was Heidi and Bekka. This worked out great since Allyson could use them as bad guys for several iterations after they cleared the structure. Heidi was all over it. Bekka was good as well, just a tad rusty in comparison.

Doug was lead in the next group with Garen as his partner. Doug had training in this, but other than this recent training session, it had been many years since he even thought about building clearing. Garen kept him on target and alive through the exercise.

Emilia and Kara made an interesting pair. Emilia was soaking up as much as she could all through every training event. She was always asking questions, trying to figure out how to do something better, faster, or more efficient. The part that impressed Kara was Emilia’s ability to actually implement and integrate all the lessons as they were taught. Rarely could she be caught doing the same mistake twice. The house clearing exercise was no different. She made an impressive student as she worked her way through all three floors of the house with Kara behind her. One of the things Kara made note of was as long as she remembered muzzle level or up when swinging about when she was teamed with Emilia (or for that matter, Heidi) due to their height difference, she could fire right over their head no problem.

Sounds a whole lot like A-Team training; SEALS, SAS or any high speed, low drag outfit probably emulates; they're all big on cross training and honing intuitive reactions so the team is as one. I guess like an octopus or squid; maybe a wolf pack or a pride; works though.

Training cycle is a bitch but what's the mission & your life worth?

Well, what else are they going to do? Sit around and watch the lawn grow?

Towards the end of the latest training evolution down at Mrs. Leary’s, Heidi had an idea. Well, she had the idea earlier and had planned it and manipulated it to make it work, but she didn’t tell Emilia about it beforehand. She made sure she and Emilia were the last to leave going back to the house.

“Oh, Emilia. It’s been a couple of days since anyone has checked on Larrissa and the kids. We need to pop down there and drop some stuff off.” She pointed to some boxes in the side basket of the Hyena.

“Really mom?” Emilia sounded tired and wasn’t anticipating this added delay in her hot shower and dinner.

“Relax, we won’t be long. Besides, you can get to meet Brody.” Heidi grinned at Emilia.

“Oh, sure! Sweaty, stinky and tired, just the impression I want to make on the only boy around here! Thanks mom!”

“Hell, look him in the eyes with your big baby blues set to fierce and your best warrior woman scowl and you could be dripping in pig shit and he would never notice. Besides, the only thing he might smell would be the cordite from the shooting in the range today.”

Heidi stacked most of their gear in the side baskets as they talked. Emilia saw there was no dissuading her mother so she moved on to her next concern.

“So what is the thing you guys have been doing to screw with Brody’s mind?”

“Blame Angelique and Allyson. Angelique was playing around with what Kara had reminded her of when they first met Larrissa and the kids, about not giving away how many people were up here or who they were.”

“Go on.”

“Well Angelique and Allyson went down there and Angelique went all ‘Russian’ and mysterious with some alter ego of ‘Belyana’ and then she introduced Allyson as Tatyana. This is in addition to Kara, Garen and Bekka. She said later she was primarily doing it to amuse herself, making him think there was a whole tribe of Amazon Warrior women up here. Allyson didn’t help. She played right along, added an Irish brogue acted mysterious and talked cryptic. She kissed him right before they left that first time.” Heidi chuckled, seeing it in her mind.

“And it all cascaded from there. I’ve been down there a couple of times as well, playing right along. I’m ‘Engel’.” At this, Emilia laughed as Heidi continued. “I told him he was cute, and he is, by the way, and told him he needed to remain strong and virtuous and he would be just right for my ‘sister’ Tenshi.”

“Let me guess, Mom. I’m ‘Tenshi’?”

“Yup.” Heidi grinned.

“So what’s the play?”

“You talk with Brody while I deliver the box of stuff.”

“So, just to be clear, this isn’t a blind date or an arranged marriage or anything, right mom?”

“No, it’s just an opportunity to meet the kid. The rest is up to you.”

Ruby met them on the porch when they drove up. Heidi knew this was a little unusual. Heidi and Emilia got out. Heidi was the first to speak.

“Ruby, this is a surprise. Normally Brody meets us.”

“I know Engel. I’m sure he will be here any moment. You came at just the right time to catch him unaware in the basement. I bet Ashley went to tell him you were arriving. Who is the newcomer?” Ruby looked over at where Emilia was.

“I’m Tenshi.” She extended a hand to Ruby who shook it.

Ruby laughed. “You guys know you’re driving poor Brody nuts! I love it! Are you guys just wandering around finding more women to screw with his head?”

Heidi laughed as well. “No, but we are glad it’s keeping you amused.”

“He is so girl crazy at this point, he doesn’t know what to do! He doesn’t know who to crush on anymore! Blonde, brunette or redhead, you covered all the bases two or three times over!”

“Well, as long as he doesn’t make you too crazy.” Heidi said. Emilia spoke up.

“We are short a redhead or two. Maybe in a couple of years……” Emilia left it hanging. She wasn’t necessarily authorized to offer Ruby a place with them, but maybe they should bring up the idea of some training for Ruby and Brody.

The train of thought was broken by Brody skidding out the door, a small basket with some eggs and a small thing of butter in his hands.

“Hi Engel! And who’s the new person?” he said all in a rush.

Emilia looked at Brody carefully as he appeared. Compared to her high school boyfriend, Brody was head and shoulders above him. He was strong from all the farm work and in spite of his awkwardness or maybe because of it, he was a lot cuter.

Whether Emilia knew it or not, she had grown in many ways over the past several months; first with the better diet and constant exercise, especially these past two months of her new training schedule, and with the added focus and confidence.

She now had the start of the same commanding presence and physicality her mother had. Where before there wasn’t much room to miss her being Heidi’s daughter, now there was absolutely no way to miss it. With their great genes and work out regimens, and add the right lighting or circumstances, they could be siblings instead of mother daughter. Here at twilight, Emilia was looking older than her fourteen years and Heidi didn’t look old enough to be her mother.

“I’m Tenshi.” She stepped closer to Brody, almost toe to toe. “It is good to meet you. I have heard so much about you from my sisters.” Her hand came out.

When Tenshi stepped up to him, the first thing he noticed was he was taller than her. The second thing was the smell of gunsmoke and oil. Then he saw her eyes. They were alive and filled with humor. Robin’s-egg blue, they seemed to grab him and hold his attention.

He saw her hand and reached for it. Her grip was strong, her hand smooth and warm. From behind her he heard Engel speak.

“Come on, Tenshi, it’s time to go.”

Tenshi leaned in to Brody, her head next to his. Her voice was just above a whisper in his ear.

“Stay safe Brody. I’ll be back.” As she pulled away, she kissed him on the cheek. She turned and climbed into the Hyena.

Brody stood on the porch a long time watching them drive away.

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
After several weeks of running all over their new territory, learning and patrolling, Jesse called everyone back together at Garen and Bekka’s. He addressed the group at breakfast.

“I know everyone’s been running around and learning a great deal, but my granddaughter just radioed last night. They are underway this morning headed our way. Their latest calculations are for her to arrive in about a week or so.” He looked around the room at all the faces. “I’ve been talking to Bekka and Garen about this and they were suggesting having a couple people ready to run down and help them if they get into any trouble.”

Kara was the first to speak. “So, Bekka, what’s the plan?”

“Why are you asking me?” was Bekka’s amused response.

“Because, whatever plan he” Kara pointed at Garen “comes up with, I try to wait until it’s filtered through you for sanity.”

At this Garen got all mock indignant. “My plans are great, I’ll have you know!”

Kara shot right back. "I wouldn’t know, I’ve never seen one complete plan. Now I do agree you have a couple great starts of plans, then the adults get ahold of it and make it work.”

Jesse was still getting used to this group. He was also a bit off balance in his mind. He didn’t like having to ask for help. But better to ask up front than come begging with hat in hand if something goes really wrong later.

“The problem is, we don’t know if they will need any help and if so, what kind they will need.” Jesse continued before things got more out of control.

Bekka figured she better reel them back in so they could start the planning process in full.

“The way I figure it, some of it will come down to what they need and how far away they are when they need it. It might be better to figure a couple different solutions we can pick from so we have a jump on things if it comes to be.”

Garen joined in. “Planning for the farthest we may need to go is tough. The first thing I thought of was to load one of those poly tanks in a cage up in the back of Terry’s Suburban. We can fill the tank with diesel in addition to the two tanks he already had on it. That would give is a monster operating distance we could go, but it won’t be that fast.”

Bekka started again. “For something faster, I was thinking my Subaru or John’s truck. They are probably the fastest things short of one of the motorcycles, but have less carrying capacity.”

Back to Garen. “If, however, they need a lot of help but speed isn’t as much of an issue, we could take the big eight-wheeled thing, loaded up with people or supplies or whatever.”

Over to Bekka. “That leads us to pairings. One of the things Garen brought up was either me or Jesse needed to be on the radios to make the most of any communication and coordination. The only thing set up for that sort of radio work would be the beast. It has a full radio suite with space to do the planning and tracking on the move.”

Garen again. “With all of this in mind, we puzzled out a few different ideas and figured to spend the next day or two working on outfitting the vehicles for the various potential problems, pairing the people and getting everything set. I looked at the medical capability of people, the strengths and weaknesses and came up with the following list of ideas and plans.”

Garen picked up the clipboard with the list.

“I’m the only one with a lot of driving experience with the beast, so that kind of ties me to it. Bekka’s probably the best with her Subaru, so with her in it, that means Jesse is with me. Our other best speed run driver is Allyson. I have you planned for using John’s truck.”

He saw Allyson frown. “Don’t worry you will love it. Think Baja race truck. Kara in Terry’s Suburban will be the long distance vehicle. Since she will have the medical covered for her team, I figured to have Heidi with her. Both of you have been to survival school and have seen enough shit before, so ….” He paused before continuing.

“Allyson, I have your favorite spotter and secondary medic, Angelique. Hopefully you two can keep each other out of trouble if you end up going.” At this, Angelique and Allyson were grinning and high fiving each other.

Garen looks over at Doug. “That means you’re going with Bekka if you guys have to go. You are primary medic for that group. Zed, Jesse, Emilia and I will set up to use the beast if it comes to it needing to go.”

Bekka looked around the room. “Remember, this is just an idea and a pre-plan. If we find out they need a particular type of help, we can and will shuffle people and capabilities around to meet the necessities of whatever mission shoes up. Basically this gives us something to do and plan with. Most likely, we will just sit here for a week until we need someone to go down and lead them in.”

Garen talked over the buzz of voices in the living room.

“Alright, let’s get everything squared away, weapons tuned, ammo loadouts built, vehicles prepped and so forth. We will also have a radio watch. We have people on the move out there and we need to listen for them.”

Everyone filed out of the room except Jesse, Garen and Bekka.

“I don’t know how to thank you for all of this.” Jesse started. Bekka stopped him, her hand on his chest.

“Jesse, she is family. You do things for family. You have two families in this world; the one you’re born into and the one you choose. You, Zed, Heidi, Emilia, Doug, Angelique, Allyson, Kara. You are family. Paige is your granddaughter. She is family. You do things for family.”

4368, paragraph 11 needs a comma between Kara and Garen. thank you sir, may i please have another. You probably have Brodys hormones at the boiling point, he'll have to spend a lot of time in the hay loft.

What every man that knows the female of the species knows but will rarely admit, "Cruel Women" is a redundant statement. A woman can be kind and caring, but when they get together as a group.......

When you hear women laugh, if they are laughing about a woman, even one they don't like, it is a sympathetic laugh. If they are laughing at a man. even one they like, it is a cruel laugh. Not judging, just observing.

main difference is getting past the prostate. The advantage of the male pt is identifying the proper hole, disadvantage other than prostate is longer distance
Lido helps also. With retention and enlarged prostate I was taught to go bigger in size rather than go smaller. Always seemed to work.

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
As I watched the bustle of activity, part of me had to laugh. It was like watching a bunch of kids swarming a crippled piñata. Finally Garen kicked them all out of the workshop and had them come up one at a time with their lists so he could get their stuff from in there for them. The tunnelway and the training buildings weren’t as bad. The gear needed from there was mor spaced out long its length.

It was enjoyable to see how far we have come as a group. Everyone was focused on their parts, working towards a collective goal. It was like I was back at one of my old units pulling gear for a no-notice deployment.

I know Garen prioritized Kara and Heidi first for stuff in the workshop. With them set as the long distance team, they were the most likely to head out the door with the inbound group so far away right now. After they pull their weapons stuff from Garen, they would move to the training building and get Terry’s Suburban ready then fill in all the gaps while Allyson and Angelique pull their gear.

Garen and I talked about which’s and what’s at length. This broad shotgun approach was the easiest way to get as much potential ready the fastest. If it comes down to it, we can tailor make the configuration and vehicle needed for whatever problem shows up, if one shows up.

With Heidi and Kara as the team for our long range crew, we have two of our most experienced people who can solve most any problem they encounter. Kara can handle the medical issues. Short of Garen, she is the best choice for almost any trauma or medical emergency. Heidi works well with her and has a ton of down range experience to help keep the two of them safe. She has some decent trauma medical training underway to fall back on and help Kara.

The only problem is for some reason Kara’s energy seems to throw Heidi off. It distracts her from the mission sometimes during training. We all know Kara’s aura is different but Heidi must feel it differently from the rest of us. Maybe if they travel together she can work some of this out. Heidi does have a weird psychic thing going on, kind of a spiritual thing. Maybe that is the connection. It might do them both some good if they could break through it. Kara used to spend hours talking to Christian about such things. She really enjoyed those talks I know no can replace him but maybe Heidi could….

If it turns out to be a mechanical issue, then we could add Zed to that crew.

Once the inbound crew gets closer, then more things come into play. If it’s a medical emergency and they are close enough that range isn’t as much of an issue, Allyson and Angelique would be first choice for a medical emergency. Two high quality medics able to get there fast and able to take care of themselves, they have really come into their own over these last months of training. If I was in trouble somewhere, they are the ones I want racing to help me.

Doug and I are third in line. I can get us places almost as fast as or faster than Allyson depending on terrain and distance. I am no slouch on medical for stabilization, but I have no delusions about being a real medic. That’s why I have Doug with me. It would take a specific need for me and or Doug to be bumped higher in the list. We are good but not as specialized for most things. Garen called us the ‘utility infielders’. We can do a bunch of different things decently well, kind of like your old country doctor. You don’t want him doing brain surgery, you want a neurosurgeon for that, but he can do a decent amount of useful stuff.

When we were building our list and planning our gear, Doug was asking me about what medic gear to bring. My answer stunned him. ‘Hell if I know, go ask your daughter, that’s her corner!’ His brain made about two or three flops and his mouth opened and shut a couple of times before he simply walked away, off to find Angelique.

He came back about a half an hour later. When I asked him if she answered his questions, he just chuckled before replying.

‘She said to be ready for SMARCH-E-PAWS-B-RAVINES-SHEEP VOMIT. She then had to spend twenty minutes telling me what that meant.’

When he looked up from the pad of paper in his hands there was a whole mix of emotions on his face. When I questioned him about it, all he could explain was his was even now only just realizing how much Angelique had grown up.

By now, I had pulled my weapons load and extra gear. I walked Doug through thinking about what he needed to bring along those lines. I had my pistol and my subgun. I added my long range rifle for me and a semi-auto shotgun for the Subaru. Garen and I have always held the belief a twelve gauge was a great multi-function tool for most operations. I added a pair of bandoliers of ammo for the shotgun as well as a grab bag of additional magazines for all my weapons.

Doug had his duty pistol from the spares down in main camp, his 45-70, and an AK he had been using for the building clearing exercises. With all of this, we had more than enough for any problems we might be running into. I made sure he had enough ammo on him and enough in a spare bag in the Subaru to top off and resupply from.

The next items pulled were things like food, water, and sleeping bags and so on and so forth. It took most of the day before I was satisfied with the preparations for Doug and me. I knew over the next several days, all of us will be reevaluating, adding, subtracting and modifying what we pulled and packed, but that was the nature of waiting. I was also watching the weather to see if anything else needed done.

With everything in limbo, other than classroom or training building type stuff, our training regimen is on hold. We are all sitting and waiting. Such is the case of ‘just in case’.

It’s probably nothing more than a great exercise in planning and practice. Until it isn’t.

#4394 the sentence you added at the end of para one made the sentence before clearer, it does have two spelling errs, mor should be more and long should be along. The sentence before that i would leave out the "from in there", we already knew they were trying to work out of the workshop and beeen booted out. Thanks again, sir.

As we get closer to launching the rescue run for Paige & Co, all of this is more interesting. How that team is configured and mounted will be real interesting but I bet a certain old-school 7.62 belt fed sees service.

Be interesting to see how Paige's pit stop folks fare vs the local sheriff/wanna-be warlord.

No rush; .....I've got time
