After several weeks of running all over their new territory, learning and patrolling, Jesse called everyone back together at Garen and Bekka’s. He addressed the group at breakfast.
“I know everyone’s been running around and learning a great deal, but my granddaughter just radioed last night. They are underway this morning headed our way. Their latest calculations are for her to arrive in about a week or so.” He looked around the room at all the faces. “I’ve been talking to Bekka and Garen about this and they were suggesting having a couple people ready to run down and help them if they get into any trouble.”
Kara was the first to speak. “So, Bekka, what’s the plan?”
“Why are you asking me?” was Bekka’s amused response.
“Because, whatever plan he” Kara pointed at Garen “comes up with, I try to wait until it’s filtered through you for sanity.”
At this Garen got all mock indignant. “My plans are great, I’ll have you know!”
Kara shot right back. "I wouldn’t know, I’ve never seen one complete plan. Now I do agree you have a couple great starts of plans, then the adults get ahold of it and make it work.”
Jesse was still getting used to this group. He was also a bit off balance in his mind. He didn’t like having to ask for help. But better to ask up front than come begging with hat in hand if something goes really wrong later.
“The problem is, we don’t know if they will need any help and if so, what kind they will need.” Jesse continued before things got more out of control.
Bekka figured she better reel them back in so they could start the planning process in full.
“The way I figure it, some of it will come down to what they need and how far away they are when they need it. It might be better to figure a couple different solutions we can pick from so we have a jump on things if it comes to be.”
Garen joined in. “Planning for the farthest we may need to go is tough. The first thing I thought of was to load one of those poly tanks in a cage up in the back of Terry’s Suburban. We can fill the tank with diesel in addition to the two tanks he already had on it. That would give is a monster operating distance we could go, but it won’t be that fast.”
Bekka started again. “For something faster, I was thinking my Subaru or John’s truck. They are probably the fastest things short of one of the motorcycles, but have less carrying capacity.”
Back to Garen. “If, however, they need a lot of help but speed isn’t as much of an issue, we could take the big eight-wheeled thing, loaded up with people or supplies or whatever.”
Over to Bekka. “That leads us to pairings. One of the things Garen brought up was either me or Jesse needed to be on the radios to make the most of any communication and coordination. The only thing set up for that sort of radio work would be the beast. It has a full radio suite with space to do the planning and tracking on the move.”
Garen again. “With all of this in mind, we puzzled out a few different ideas and figured to spend the next day or two working on outfitting the vehicles for the various potential problems, pairing the people and getting everything set. I looked at the medical capability of people, the strengths and weaknesses and came up with the following list of ideas and plans.”
Garen picked up the clipboard with the list.
“I’m the only one with a lot of driving experience with the beast, so that kind of ties me to it. Bekka’s probably the best with her Subaru, so with her in it, that means Jesse is with me. Our other best speed run driver is Allyson. I have you planned for using John’s truck.”
He saw Allyson frown. “Don’t worry you will love it. Think Baja race truck. Kara in Terry’s Suburban will be the long distance vehicle. Since she will have the medical covered for her team, I figured to have Heidi with her. Both of you have been to survival school and have seen enough shit before, so ….” He paused before continuing.
“Allyson, I have your favorite spotter and secondary medic, Angelique. Hopefully you two can keep each other out of trouble if you end up going.” At this, Angelique and Allyson were grinning and high fiving each other.
Garen looks over at Doug. “That means you’re going with Bekka if you guys have to go. You are primary medic for that group. Zed, Jesse, Emilia and I will set up to use the beast if it comes to it needing to go.”
Bekka looked around the room. “Remember, this is just an idea and a pre-plan. If we find out they need a particular type of help, we can and will shuffle people and capabilities around to meet the necessities of whatever mission shoes up. Basically this gives us something to do and plan with. Most likely, we will just sit here for a week until we need someone to go down and lead them in.”
Garen talked over the buzz of voices in the living room.
“Alright, let’s get everything squared away, weapons tuned, ammo loadouts built, vehicles prepped and so forth. We will also have a radio watch. We have people on the move out there and we need to listen for them.”
Everyone filed out of the room except Jesse, Garen and Bekka.
“I don’t know how to thank you for all of this.” Jesse started. Bekka stopped him, her hand on his chest.
“Jesse, she is family. You do things for family. You have two families in this world; the one you’re born into and the one you choose. You, Zed, Heidi, Emilia, Doug, Angelique, Allyson, Kara. You are family. Paige is your granddaughter. She is family. You do things for family.”
