Thank you.
"Besides, there wasn’t anything but friendship going on between her and Doug anyway"...Keep telling yourself that and you may come to believe it, maybe.
Yes, my wife would think of that as 'speaking it into existence'
I call it slightly delusional although, given a history of 'bad' relationships, I can see why she'd want to deny anything deeper to protect what she has, if that makes any sense ... been married most of my adult life and relationships have always been a puzzle - topic for another day & venue, I think

Them scrawny witches you posted the pics of would beat you to death with them hip bones. thank you Sir for more of the story.

That's Kara though-

Page 1 post 35
"She could out eat most the guys we were with, but her metabolism was such she could not for the life of her put on much if any weight. We also got her addicted to working out. We did it because it helped us do the job. She did it because she loved the feel. She was able to put on muscle but she still was skinny. The place it showed most was her shoulders. Halfway through the first deployment, she could sling gear with the best of us, and she ran constantly. "

There's muscle there, but not much padding. The hip bones might beat you to death, but it would take three undertakers to erase the smile

While Doug and Angelique went to meet Zed and Jesse, the rest of the group were hard at work on several projects.

Emilia and Kara were down in the connexes digging out Christmas gift stuff for the kids down the hill.

“So why me?” Emilia asking Kara, trying to figure out if it was just to keep her busy or what.

“The kids are as follows; the oldest boy, Brody is fourteen, Ruby, the oldest girl is eleven, Ashley is eight and her baby brother Finn is five. I don’t know **** all about what to by for kids those ages. You are the youngest one of us here and can help me filter the sanity and not come off as a complete dweeb.” Kara explained rather matter-of-factly.

This took Emilia back on her heels a bit. Brody was the same age as she was, and if what they told her was true, he was running most of the farm work himself. Emilia knew how to halfway take care of and look after one adult. Here he was taking care of and defending his younger siblings all the while he was making sure the cows were tended to, the goats were taken care of and the chickens, can’t forget the chickens.

Here she thought she was all grown up, running around in the woods playing junior park ranger with her mom and Doug. ‘I guess there’s grown-up and really grown up’ she told herself in her head.

She helped Kara find a couple of winter coats, some toys for the little ones but she was stumped about what to get Brody. Finally something she said struck an idea with Kara.

“What was that you just said?”

“I said ‘I don’t know what to get him, he’s not a kid anymore.’” Emilia looked over at Kara. “How does that help?”

“It means we don’t look for a kid’s present, we look for a present suitable for a young man.” Kara looked around the connex, making note of some things to come back for later. “Come on, lets get back inside. What we need will be in the workshop in the main house.”

Still puzzled, Emilia helped Kara close things up and they went towards the main house.

Bekka and Allyson were hard at work in the kitchen. Bekka seemed to be all over the place. She had a roast in the oven, candied yams baking alongside them. Pies were cooling. All of this, along with some canned green bean casserole were being bundled up for delivery tonight to Larissa and the kids for a Christmas day feast. A couple bags of homemade cookies were set aside as well.

Along with all this work for the family down the hill, Allyson and Bekka were working on dinner for the group tonight and prepping things for their own Christmas dinner. Dinner tonight would be stew in homemade bread bowls. The stew was mainly venison trimmings along with carrots and potatoes all in a thick broth. The idea was to have it ready for grazing once everyone was here.

Allyson noticed while they were cooking Bekka seemed a bit nervous about something.

“So, what’s got you all twitchier than Merlin in a thunderstorm?” Allyson asked as Bekka went by, an armload of ingredients in her hands.

“I haven’t cooked for this many in some time. With supplies the way they are, I don’t want to waste anything by screwing anything up.” Bekka countered as she started flipping back and forth in one of four cookbooks out on various counters.

Allyson wasn’t buying it, at least not as the main thing. “Everything will be fine. These are kids. Fish fingers and pudding cup and they would be happy.”

“Not the point. If I’m doing it, it should be right.’ Bekka stopped and looked over at Allyson. “These are neighbors, a new element on the edge of our group. Our good first impression needs to keep being good. We want their help and support. We want to help and support them. People. That’s what strength really is. It has to be right…….” Bekka paused realizing she was sounding preachy.

Bekka knew if this fragile timeline played out the way Kara, Garen and herself feared, years from now, Allyson will be able to look back and reminisce with Brody and Ruby and Ashley and Finn about how this Christmas was a new beginning for them.

Bekka didn’t know why she was feeling so old or maudlin. Garen was feeling some of it too. They both knew sometimes they would get like this, driven towards a task that needed done. Once all the preparations for said task were finished, their moods would lighten, their minds would relax and they would move forward. It’s not like they were expecting to die tomorrow. They just needed to plan some for the future, lay the groundwork to see ahead.

Her thoughts were disrupted by a great furry head pushing against hers. Merlin was on his spot at the end of the breakfast bar. He knew she needed him right now. He demanded she pay attention to his purring. It always helped.

Allyson was looking at her, Bekka noticed.

“What?”

“Five minutes ago you were yelling at him for being on one of the cookbooks and now, he’s doing the same thing and you’re praising him. I just don’t understand.”

“And I can’t explain it either. “ She turned back to Merlin “Can I Merlin? No I can’t! You just know.” She ruffled the fur behind his ears, causing it to stick out in a great furry halo he would have to spend long minutes trying to get back into place.

Bekka turned back to Allyson. “Once they get here and we get them settled, Garen wants us all to get together and lay out what all has happened since the quake. This way we all are on the same page so to speak. Late this evening we can run the stuff down to Larrissa. The stew will be ready anytime someone’s hungry this afternoon or this evening.”

Bekka turned back to Merlin but continued to talk to Allyson. “Maybe tomorrow or the next day, after all the chaos settles some, we can relax and get back to unstressed.”

Allyson laughed at the thoughts in her head. ‘Unstressed? Not intense? This crew? Yeah, right!’

Heidi and Garen were finishing getting the trailer in place, all plugged in and connected. Heidi marveled at the cozy touches inside the trailer. From the tiny fireplace (unlit since it was inside a building) to the hardwood floors, the birch paneling, and the simple furniture, it was almost like being in a tiny version of Doug’s cabin.

“This thing is amazing! If I hadn’t seen the wheels on the outside, I would never think this was a trailer. It doesn’t even wiggle a bit with us walking around inside it!”

“Well, unfortunately you will never get to see the improved version Kara made for herself.” Garen replied as he checked the water pressure in the sink. “She had it in a long term RV spot down on the shore, the type where you buy your pad and such in the little gated community. It was beautiful there, her spot was right on the shore. She had a beautiful view of the waves crashing on the rocks twenty feet from her door at high tide.”

Heidi thought of her own home, also too close to the water, long swamped and destroyed. Her thoughts were disrupted by Garen saying something. “Huh?”

“I said, her version of the copper counter top was much better than my version here. She used a much thicker sheet of copper.”

Heidi looked over at Garen. Garen was running his hands over the counter, a faraway look on his face for a moment.

“So, how did you guys get it to feel so solid?” Heidi asked.

“This thing is a bit heavier than stock for one thing.” Garen seemed to come back from where he was. “This would be a strain to haul long distances without a serious truck upgrade. All the Improvements I did, I did once it was here on the property. We put a pair of I-beams lengthwise the entire length of the trailer and attached the hydraulic jacks to them. This removes the suspension from the equation.”

Garen spent the next twenty minutes walking around the trailer, pointing out what they did to it. He seemed to be happy talking about such light topics and such. Heidi knew some of it was a stalling tactic. She figured he was looking forward to guests but not so much the going through everything that went on since the quake. They all were compiling their notes after the decision to do it as one big group Intel dump.

Heidi wasn’t sure about talking about the shootings down at main camp. If she wasn’t sure about that, she surly wasn’t looking forwards to any details about the poor woman in the barn. She definitely wasn’t wanting a piece and part retelling of Zed and Jesse’s handiwork after the fight. If these guys went through anything half as bad, it’s no wonder the place is full to the brim with nervous energy.

Happy birthday to the wife. Keep her happy!
Thanks for the new chapter, too. Coffee has been calming the jitters so far, but another few days without "Market Day" distractions might have required a shot to deal with (not the COVID kind).

Garen continued to show them around. “Here’s the main room and the kitchen. This is Allyson.” He gestured over at the red-head standing by the stove. “And my wife, Bekka.” Garen waved his hand in her direction n as she came into the kitchen from the pantry.

“Hey, guys. Good to finally meet you two. Emilia Heidi and Doug have been regaling us with tales and references to you two. I figured you would be taller” she said with a grin.

“YOU!” Jesse exclaimed. “It was you on the radio!”

Bekka looked a little puzzled. “Me? When?”

Everyone else was looking at Jesse now.

“We kept hearing stuff on the radio!” He looked over at Zed. “I told you it was some sort of TALCE, right?”

Zed was looking confused. “Yeah???”

“It had to be her! These guys were the ones on the radio!” Jesse was all spooled up now! Now he could get the answers to questions he had been working on for months!

“I thought you said they were aircraft?” Zed was still a bit skeptical.

“Yeah, but I also said they sounded wrong in some ways as well.” Jesse started to doubt what his own ears told him. “It was you guys, right?”

Bekka was just smiling at him. “We will figure that out in a little bit. Lets get everyone set up with food and drink and some introductions before we go all ’story time’ ok?”

Garen and Bekka couldn’t remember when they ever had ten people in their house here at one time. They were all in the living room eating, talking and enjoying, for the most part, the conversations.

After the introductions were over and some pleasantries, bits and pieces of their collective story began emerging, not in a cohesive string but more in a jumble. Some elements each group had already surmised, some things were a surprise.

“I saw the campsite and the note you left for Emilia. I was so glad when we met you in the woods the other day.” Kara said at one point. At this Heidi and Emilia cringed.

And

“So, yeah, it was your Remote Manual I found the stuff to figure out how to fix Doug’s electrolytes.” Heidi explained.

“After that was when I thought she might make a good Paramedic.” Doug pointed out to Garen.

And

“It was when I found your water bottle with Angelique’s alcohol stove I knew she would be safe. I still don’t know how I can ever repay what you have done for my daughter.”

And

“So there we were, trying to get away from the wall of water and he’s still worried about roads! So I told him to just lock onto my ass and follow me! So he did and we went up the embankment and got away from the wave. So you could say, my ass saved Garen’s” At Kara’s description, Garen turned red and sputtered.

“Well in my own defense, it is a cute ass.” His comment was lost to the laughter.

Later, the talk turned more serious as the later events started dovetailing and the elements got much more serious. The first mission to town, Garen’s injury, Terry’s sacrifice, the battle for the building in the dark, the dawn raid of the lower camp in the forest. All poured out into the room. Enough details to hurt, not enough to drown them.

The damage done to his little girl horrified Doug. Everything she had accomplished made him proud. The events at the stadium were unthinkable. He couldn’t help but wonder what he would have done in their place. He hoped he could have done as well as they did, but he knew he would have been outmatched.

Zed sat and just soaked up the stories. He was once again glad Marta wasn’t here for the devastation and destruction. He was sad, however, she wasn’t here to meet these new people. She would have liked them he was sure. He was happy they had come together. These were likeminded people and it would be good to have them around.

Garen and Bekka were glad. Glad the group was here, glad they had been able to rescue Angelique and Allyson, glad Doug survived the ambush, glad Heidi and Emilia had saved Doug. This group felt more and more like family. They hadn’t felt this way about so many in a long time. Not since the military.

Allyson was really enjoying this gathering. This was like when her father would have a bunch of his buddies over when she was a little girl. Everyone here understood and were comfortable with one another. There were no outliers. Even Emilia was part of the group. She might not be a steely eyed killer, but she had been both the hunted and the hunter and fully invested in the group.

Heidi and Emilia sat and listened. Heidi was somewhat relaxed now. She was back among her people; warriors. These people might be harassing the snot out of you one moment then killing themselves trying to rescue you the next. This, this was what she missed about the military and hoped to find going back in law enforcement. Well, in a sideways way, she had it back; a tight knit group of people you could count on to do impossible things on your behalf. She hoped Emilia recognized the uniqueness of this group and what it could mean to them.

Emilia looked around the room. Some of these faces she knew well, some were new to her. All of them she saw in a different light. It seemed as if they all relaxed some here in this group. It was hard to explain. She was sure if she asked, they couldn’t explain it to her because they didn’t realize what it was. Finally, Emilia thought she might have it. It was like they were all actors playing a part most of the time and now, here they were backstage and could be their selves with no judgement or harsh condemnation of who they were.

Emilia looked over at her mother. Even her, she looked more relaxed than she had ever seen her. Sure she was relaxed at the cabin with her and Doug, and at Zed’s as well, but not like this. Emilia knew she was going to write as much as this down as she could. The stories these people could tell should not be lost. In her mind she thought ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house…’

Her gaze swept around the room again. Kara caught her eye, saw her looking. She gave Emilia a wink and a grin, then went back to the story Zed was telling. Emilia remembered how subdued her mother looked whenever Emilia caught Heidi staring at Kara. There was something strange there she would have to ask about. Had Heidi finally met her match?

Garen and Bekka broke the spell. “Guys, we need to deliver the presents and food down the hill.” Bekka said to the group.

“Who’s going to play Santa and deliver?” Garen asked the group as Bekka began gathering the care package and presents.

Several looks were exchanged around the room. A few pointed to their glasses as if to say we can’t find the door let alone the road.

Allyson stood up, looked at Angelique and then at Garen. “It’s ok, the Kid and I will go play Santa.”

Garen smiled at them. He tossed the keys of the Hyena to Angelique. Looking at Allyson he said “Make sure she keeps it mellow and give a shout if there’s any trouble.”

Both Alyson and Angelique gave him an impish smile as if to say ‘us, find trouble?’

Bekka and Kara help them carry all the stuff to the Hyena while rest remained in the great room telling tales and toasting surviving.

What are the odds and are you covering the spread if it ends up a hat trick?
Sorry, my gambling is limited to driving in Memphis, buying the odd lotto ticket & Federal Elections; you know, the crap shoot ones, where we-the-people seem to always lose..

I just thought it was an opportune time, if anyone wanted to take a shot. Personally, I think there's an excellent chance proverbial hell will erupt as Allyson & Angelique make their way downhill.

The hat trick is such a good bet I wouldn't give odds that sequence won't occur :devilish:

We'll find out tomorrow, methinks .....

Hmmm... will granny make it... or might Zed find an unexpected reminder of Marta....
Why is Heidi concerned about Emilia looking at Kara?
Will Doug be strong enough to handle Heidi?
How long until CCG brings the story lines together?
When will the winged-Vs join them...
When will the last battle take place and against whom?

So much fun for the future. Thanks CCG!

Its actually Emilia a little concerned when she catches Heidi looking at Kara strangely. (Slight edit to make it more apparent, hopefully the wife gets the edit of yesterday fully done in time to update)

We are at Christmas, so only a scant month and a half or two until Paige, Sabine , Henrik and Andrea are underway.
