Representatives of the Middle East Quartet (Russia, USA, European Union, UN) during an online meeting at the UN discussed a return to negotiations on the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is stated in a statement released by the UN press service on Tuesday, March 23rd.
“The ambassadors of the Middle East Quartet from the European Union, the Russian Federation, the United States and the UN met to discuss a return to substantive negotiations that would lead to a two-state solution,”
TASS message.
In addition, the UN noted that the meeting also discussed the situation with the coronavirus pandemic in this region, inequality in economic development between Israel and Palestine and the need for the parties to the conflict to refrain from unilateral actions that could complicate the implementation of previously reached decisions.
On February 15, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that a teleconference of the “quartet” of international mediators (RF, USA, EU, UN) on the Middle East settlement (STB) took place. The Russian side stressed the importance of creating the necessary conditions for an early resumption of direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations under the auspices of the Quartet.
During the talks, the Russian side also emphasized the inadmissibility of unilateral steps, “whether it be incitement to violence or the expansion of settlement activity,” including the demolition of Palestinian buildings on the West Bank of the Jordan River.
It is noted that the representatives of the Quartet agreed to hold their meetings on a regular basis.
On January 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting of the UN Security Council that Russia proposes to hold a ministerial meeting on a Middle East settlement with the participation of Israel and Palestine in the spring and summer of 2021.
The aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict occurred in May 2018 after the United States opened a new embassy in Israel, moving it from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Thus, the States de facto recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. Palestine considers part of the city its territory.
At the end of January 2020, the then current US President Donald Trump announced the terms of the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. According to the document, Jerusalem should become the indivisible capital of Israel, and Palestine will receive a capital in East Jerusalem and allegedly double its territory.
Israel called the document a realistic path to peace. Palestine criticized the proposal and announced its decision to terminate all agreements with the United States and Israel because of the latter’s plans to annex Jerusalem.
