Iran warns: Lebanon, Gaza terror groups can ‘level Haifa, Tel Aviv to ground’
Revolutionary Guards’ commander says proxies ready for ‘confrontation,’ with their missile capabilities supported by Tehran

A top Iranian commander said Saturday that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had given an order for Tehran-backed terror groups to destroy Haifa and Tel Aviv if “any foolishness is committed against Iran,” warning that the Islamic Republic has been working for years on developing the capabilities of its proxies in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
“We teach the Resistance Front to make fishing rods, instead of providing fish, and Lebanon and Gaza possess the technology to manufacture missiles,” Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Aerospace Force told the state-run Al-Manar TV channel.
“All the missile capabilities of Gaza and Lebanon have been supported by Iran, and they are the front line for confrontation,” he said.

Noting that “the capabilities of the resistance axis” are much advanced from what they were ten years ago Hajizadeh said, “today, the Palestinians fire rockets instead of throwing stones.”

“We have a general order from the guide, Ali Khamenei, to level Haifa and Tel Aviv to the ground, in case any foolishness is committed against Iran, and we have worked over the past years to be able to do so,” he said.
Iran provides support to Hamas and more direct backing to Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, all of which are sworn to Israel’s destruction.

Haifa and Tel Aviv have been threatened in the past by both Iran and Hezbollah.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah recently suggested striking Haifa’s stores of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive fertilizer that fueled the deadly Beirut port blast in August that killed 193 people and wounded 6,500 others.
The comments came as the Israeli military is preparing for the possibility of a strike by Iran-backed militias in Iraq or Yemen, according to a Friday report. The Israel Defense Forces held discussions last week about possible attacks, including missile and drone strikes, from the Iraqi militias and Houthi groups in Yemen, the Kan public broadcaster reported.
Iran on Sunday marked one year since the death of General Qassem Soleimani in an American drone strike in Baghdad, amid fears in Washington that Tehran could retaliate for the killing on the anniversary.

US officials have expressed concern that Iran may be planning attacks against US-allied targets in neighboring Iraq or elsewhere in the region to coincide with the date. In recent weeks the US military has taken a range of steps designed to deter Iran, while publicly emphasizing that it is not planning, and has not been instructed, to take unprovoked action against Iran.
US President Donald Trump has warned Iran against any attack, and the US has flown strategic bombers over the Persian Gulf in a show of force meant to deter Iran from attacking American or allied targets in the Middle East. A US nuclear submarine crossed the Strait of Hormuz and an Israeli submarine reportedly openly crossed the Suez Canal in a show of force directed at Iran a few days earlier.
Iranian officials have issued a stream of threats against the US and Israel as the anniversary of Soleimani’s death approached, while accusing Trump of seeking a “pretext” for war.

(Ahmad Al-Rubaye/AFP)

The US killed Soleimani, who oversaw the Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force, and others in the January 3, 2020, strike near Baghdad International Airport. It came after months of incidents raising tensions between the two countries and ultimately saw Iran retaliate with a ballistic missile strike targeting American troops in Iraq.
Iran has also threatened to attack Israel since the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in late November, in a raid blamed on the Jewish state.
Israel has long been suspected of carrying out a series of targeted killings of Iranian nuclear scientists nearly a decade ago, in a bid to curtail Iran’s nuclear program.

Seems like nothing like this has been posted on Home Front Command account in the past year. The info is presented in a very general way and not specifically tied to the security situation, but given the high regional tensions the timing is...interesting...

BREAKING: Biden Admin Changes U.S. Ambassador to Israel into "U.S. Ambassador to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza" -- Day 1 policy shift signals new admin does not consider any parts of these areas as Israeli territory https://freebeacon.com/national-secur
National Security Biden Reverses on Change to U.S. Ambassador to Israel Twitter Name to Include West Bank and Gaza

unnamed-736x611.png

Adam Kredo - January 20, 2021 1:33 PM

The Biden administration on Wednesday reversed a change to the U.S. ambassador to Israel's Twitter account name to read, "the official Twitter account of the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza" after a Washington Free Beacon report highlighting the shift.

For a time on Wednesday, the official Twitter feed for the U.S. ambassador to Israel had its title changed to add "the West Bank and Gaza," territories the United States has for decades avoided taking a stand on due to ongoing peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians. The title change sparked an outcry online, including among Republican lawmakers, and was quietly changed back to read only, "U.S. ambassador to Israel." The State Department would not comment on the initial change or why it was changed back to its original form.

Embassy officials have speculated that the title was inadvertently changed by Twitter due to a technical glitch when the accounts were switched from the Trump administration over to the Biden administration. The Free Beacon could not confirm the veracity of these claims.
"The U.S. doesn’t have ambassadors to any other disputed territory in the world. Singling out Israel, once again, is wrong," said Len Khodorkovsky, former deputy assistant secretary at the State Department. "Instead of building on all the progress that’s been made toward peace in the Middle East, the Biden administration seems to be reversing course toward the failed policies of the Obama years."

During the Obama administration, former ambassador Dan Shapiro was referred to in official communications as the "U.S. Ambassador to Israel."
While President Joe Biden has said he would maintain the U.S. embassy facility in Jerusalem—which former President Donald Trump moved in a historic policy shift—it is likely he will put greater emphasis on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which have long been stalled. Biden also will grapple with the last administration's decision to recognize the Golan Heights area along the Israel-Syria border as officially part of the Jewish state.
Reacting to the shift, Rep. Michael McCaul (R., Texas), lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Twitter: "It's incredibly troubling the administration made this controversial move on Day One, [without] consulting w/Congress. It also seems to fly
in the face of comments made by Antony Blinken yesterday. I strongly urge the president to clarify this provocative move quickly."

The title change also seemed to contradict comments by Biden's secretary of state nominee, Anthony Blinken, who said during his
confirmation hearing Tuesday that he would not seek to relocate the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem and would continue the tight security
relationship between the United States and Israel.
Jonathan Schanzer, a veteran Middle East expert and vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the move could lead to significant policy changes.
"One can interpret this in two ways: On the one hand, it could be a recognition of the fact that the East Jerusalem Consulate is no longer, thus underscoring that the embassy in Jerusalem is the central clearinghouse for all things related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. On the other hand, it also seems to imply that all three territories are to be treated with equal recognition—and that might mark a significant change in policy," Schanzer said. "Clarification will be needed on whether America's diplomatic approach to Israel and the Palestinians is changing on day one of the Biden administration."

Israel, Syria officials discuss removal of Iran and its militias from Syria: Report

Rawad Taha, Al Arabiya English Wednesday 20 January 2021

Israel’s demand to remove Iran and its militias from Syria was discussed by Syrian and Israeli officials last month at the Russian Hmeimim base in Syria’s Latakia, according to the Syrian Bridges Center for Studies.
According to the report, the meeting included the Director of Syria’s National Security Office Major General Ali Mamlouk, Security Advisor at the Syrian Palace Bassam Hassan, Israel’s former chief of staff of the Israeli army Gadi Eisenkot and former Mossad general Ari bin Menashe. Alexander Tchaikov, the commander of the Russian forces in Syria, was also present at the meeting.
https://news.google.com/publications/CAAqBwgKMOnQlwswi_quAw?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en
Observers and international affairs experts have been monitoring Russia’s work as a mediator between Syria and Israel in recent weeks. Sources have confirmed that Israeli army has been informing the Russians of airstrikes on Syria beforehand. After the recent “Abraham Accords” peace deals between Israel and Arab states, some have speculated that Syria may be next, despite Iranian presence on its soil, after multiple Syrian officials openly discussed the possibility of peace after negotiations.

The center said that the Syrian delegation requested facilitating the return to the Arab League and obtaining financial aid to pay off Iranian debts along with stopping western sanctions to open the way for Syria to expel Iran.
The center added that Israeli demands included “completely removing Iran, Hezbollah and Tehran's militias and forming a government that includes the opposition, restructuring the security and military establishment.”
The center added that the meeting did not conclude with specific agreements, but that it constituted the beginning of a path that Russia is pushing toward and is expected to witness a major expansion in 2021.
The report added that Moscow believes that building a direct relationship between the regime and Israel could constitute a lifeline for the regime and obtain international support for its political project in Syria.

Last Tuesday, Israel, with US support, launched the heaviest raids on Iranian and Syrian sites in northeastern Syria.
The Israeli army announced in its annual report for 2020 that it carried out 50 air strikes on targets in Syria and launched more than 500 missiles and smart missiles during the past year, with the aim of preventing Iran's positioning in Syria.

IDF forces to simulate battle against Hezbollah; timing of drill not coincidental says military affairs journalist.

The IDF is launching an exercise code-named Lighting Storm to prepare forces for a military clash with Hezbollah. The drill will test various battle scenarios on the Lebanon border, the army said.
Northern Israel residents should expect heavy military vehicle traffic, explosions, and roadblocks on some border-area roads, the statement said. The drill is scheduled to end on Wednesday.
The timing of the exercise is “not coincidental,” IDF Radio’s military affairs reporter Tsahi Daboush tweeted, without elaborating. Previously, a senior IDF officer warned that a Hezbollah attack on Israel was very likely.

New details on Syria plot
The IDF added that the exercise will test lessons learned from incidents on the Lebanon border over the summer, apparently referring to attempted Hezbollah infiltrations and sniper attacks.
In parallel, the army shared new details about explosive devices placed near the Israel-Syria border last year. A report by Israel Hayom revealed that the bombs, planted by Iranian proxies, were meant to kill IDF forces on patrol and could have sparked a war.

Engineering troops used advanced equipment to neutralize the devices, the report said. IDF officials noted that the terror cell used powerful industrial-grade explosives

I've got to wonder whether those "battalions" are "Arab sized" (i.e. calling a rump company a battalion or a battalion a brigade) or everyone else sized? Either way, that many irregular raiders would constitute a definite threat.

Frustration In Israel As Biden Still Hasn't Phoned Netanyahu

It's increasingly looking like the US and Israel may be in for a frostier four years to come compared to the close and highly coordinated prior state of relations with the Trump administration, in which it should be recalled Tel Aviv got its wish on everything from Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital, to acknowledged sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Israeli leadership and the public is voicing increased frustration at the fact that Joe Biden has yet to pick up the phone and talk to Benjamin Netanyahu, as NBC reports late this week:
"In his first three weeks in office, President Joe Biden has made a flurry of phone calls to American allies around the world, including the leaders of Canada, Britain, France and Japan.
But one close American ally’s leader has so far been left conspicuously off the new president’s call list: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."

Israeli media is now rife with speculation over what this means for the future of Israeli-US relations even while Washington continues shelling out billions in foreign aid to its number one Mideast ally.

"Biden and his aides aim to tell Netanyahu, 'You’re nothing special,'" geopolitical analyst Yossi Melman wrote in the Israeli daily Haaretz. "'The personal connection and chemistry you had with Donald Trump not only fail to advance your standing in Washington, they’re an obstacle.'"

And the further irony, Melman points out, is that Netanyahu has over the same period had no less than three phone calls from Vladimir Putin.

In response to the reports the former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro, who served under the prior Obama-Biden administration, said, "There’s no reason for any drama" and that likely Biden will pick up the phone soon.

However, other pundits are noting it as a clear rebuke. A former Israel consul-general, Dani Dayan, told NBC for example:
"It’s a clear sign of displeasure from President Biden with the fact that Prime Minister Netanyahu was perceived in Washington for the last 12 years as almost a card-carrying member of the Republican Party."
Long-term policy on Israel from the new administration remains unclear, however Biden's Secretary of State has previously indicated the US will continue to uphold some of Trump's more controversial moves regarding the close regional ally, most notably continuing to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and keeping the American embassy there.

Meanwhile, on Thursday the White House was pressed on the matter. "US President Joe Biden plans to speak with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu soon, the White House said on Thursday without providing a date," the press secretary responded, according to Reuters.

If you're Biden's handlers, would you really want him speaking at length with Netanyahu? The risks are worse than not speaking directly to him at all.
