GOV/MIL Kindergarten Classes on Man's Best Friend

From the Davos One Health Conference:

In their own words:

Statistical analysis of biting incidents shows not only that children are bitten by dogs more frequently than adults, but also that the wounds from these bites are worse, as children of-ten suffer injuries to the neck or head. They are twice as likely as adults to suffer dog bite injuries requiring hospital treatment. Children do not know that – no matter how well trained a dog is – in tense situations, its behavior is determined by its natural instincts. In such situations, the children's own instinctive behavior is counter-productive.

Children will take safety, where kindergarten children can learn the basic rules of how to behave around dogs. What should you do if an unaccompanied dog runs towards you on the way to school? Or what if you would like to pat a dog that you don't know? What should you not do, if a dog is eating, or asleep? When children know which situations can be dangerous, and when they learn the right way to behave in these situations, accidents can be avoided – not just in public areas, but at home as well.

The government feels that your children need these classes so that they won't fear dogs.

Actually, this is another case of parents abdicating responsibility. Children should be taught appropriate behavior around animals by their parents as they are growing up. There is no reason a child should enter kindergarten, heck pre-k or earlier, without being taught how to act around animals - not just dogs. If you don't have a pet, call a vet or pet store and see if they would allow you to demonstrate for your child.

And those lessons won't take care of a fear of dogs. Only regular exposure to well behaved dogs, while knowing how to deal with ill behaved dogs, will handle a fear of dogs.

I am not sure the parents are abdicating their responsibility. My children went to (horror) public school because in those days only hippies with no curriculum home-schooled. I was a very hands on mom. One time I dropped in and found the teacher teaching her students (my child) that putting alcohol in food was considered poisoning! It didn't take me long before I spoke up and confronted her on the issue. I specifically used wine in spaghetti sauce which simmers all day. There is no alcohol in it and even if there was it wasn't poison. The teacher quickly told my child to listen to her mother and changed the subject.

Most children love animals and there are some things they need to know but they can learn it without school involvement. Even if a child encounters a bad dog they can overcome. My impression was that they wanted the children to really be taught the new PC animal ethics not necessarily the parents. For instance, what would you consider to be animal hording? The *new* PC animal ethic is that if you have more than one animal you are hording animals. I also would not trust them to instill fear of a dog. That seems the direction that they are going. One Heath has no need for companion animals once they have extracted what they can from them.

I have been saddened by the gradual distancing of children from animals. Before our days are over we will see a day when the animal human bond may not exist.

Especially if this One Health invades.

Exactly what is wrong with a child having a healthy respect (in PC talk, FEAR) of dogs and/or other stranger animals? Yes, it's up to the parents to teach children how to behave around domestic pets, but that becomes problematic if there is no pet in the home. The idea of visiting a pet store or a petting zoo is good. I have no problem, however, with schools providing some little basic information to kids on reading the body language of the neighborhood dogs and cats. They teach "stranger danger" all the time; animal danger would not be amiss.

I agree, willlowlady. And some parents can't teach how to behave around animals as they themselves were never around them.
