Food Keto Prepping

I am going to be posting any articles or sites related to Keto prepping, as that is different from "normal" carb heavy prepping.
I simply can no longer tolerate carbs, and w TSHTF is no time to be compromising my health.
What I fear is that most of these foods will be something I must can or preserve myself, and that is time and energy heavy.
So I will be looking for Foods that are already prepared, if possible.

Here are two websites that deal with this subject:

Thank you so much for posting this! I have just started Keto myself and was wondering about how to adjust my preps.

There are several forms of keto. Most are fat heavy and in that case you'll need lots of lard, butter and ghee. I have had very good luck with canning butter and bacon. I know it's good for 3 years. Peanut butter is always on my list.

Other keto people, including me, are more protein based rather than fat based. In that case you'll need lots of eggs or chickens. I've had great luck freezing eggs and depend greatly on dehydrated eggs. Canned meats (both commercial and home) is the mainstay of my preps. We usually have fresh venison in the freezer. Rabbits are good. However your best bet is to make friends with local beef farmers. Beef is king for nutrition. I also like to have a little collagen protein powders on hand - the kind that is NOT plant based and that have added nutrients.

Veggies are easily grown in the windowsill or the garden - away from the root crops. I plant lots of peanuts and sunflowers. A few years ago I planted 2 hazelnut trees. Hazelnuts produce fast and heavy, are a source of protein and fat and can be used in a number of ways.

What I did was to play "what if" on one of those free nutrition calculators. I entered my preferred keto foods in quantities that allowed me to hit my micros. Once I had 10 days of meals that fit my family then I knew exactly what to grow and how much to store.

Some great ideas Toosh. I may try that and see what pops.
I, too, can butter and ghee.
I have chickens.
While I have cheese powder, it is soybean oil heavy, and I need to stay away from that.

This too shall pass.

Can you recommend one of the nutrition calculators? I've got to start doing keto, too (to my dismay, as I've tried it before and didn't do well on it -- I can do low carb, but keto didn't work as well).

Cardinal, thank you for bringing this up, and for the websites. I have a lot of high-carb dry stuff stored in a spare freezer -- if nothing else, it will feed the chickens, who will give us eggs.

Mine fed a colony of rats.
They are pretty much cleared out now, still have to work on disinfecting the basement.

I've had trouble with mice. Had an empty (small) chest freezer, so I filled it up. There is still some stuff out but I've got most of it in rodent-proof containers. Between the dogs and the chickens, it will all get used.

In a true honest to God SHTF situation, food is food. There won’t be gluten free organic locally source choices. You eat what there is or you die. That’s the problem with a true SHTF. Sorry.

We fell off the Carnivore wagon for this exact reason when Covid hit. We bought a bunch of crap food (we’re not preppers like everyone else… we’ll be the first to die.)

I’m definitely not planning on giving up meat in SHTF. I’ll decimate the local pigeon and vermin population if need be. I also store mostly meat centric Mountain House #10 cans. You just have to continue to stock up on what you know you’ll want to eat.

My brother and I are ‘mostly carni’, though I do grow a garden because, as drafter said - and we all know - food is food, esp when things go sporty; and I want to know how to provide what I can.

Having said that, I have a broken tummy (as I tell my grands) so I must monitor my blood to see how I’m doing with absorption and utility of vita, minerals and macros. Adding some home-grown greens and legumes now to increase my folate and b12 levels despite all the supplementation I do.

But I do believe keto is miles ahead of the modern American diet, and many would find great benefit to check it out.

Appreciate the thread Card!

Sigh. This is true. But some of us will also get sick if we have to eat some things, so we are trying to be prepared so that we have what keeps us healthy. This is what prepping is FOR.

Cronometer: Track nutrition & count calories is my favorite

Where's what I want you to do - - open this ap on any device and enter Beef sirloin, 6 oz - or whatever you usually eat at a meal - into the food entry and look at the nutrition. THEN delete that entry and start fresh with say, 6 oz kale, 6 oz spinach, 6 oz blueberries or whatever is your highest nutrient "diet food" to lose weight with. These things we are told are nutritious don't hold a candle to a piece of meat.

You are completely right and I totally agree. But I just gotta say, if you suddenly start eating stuff you aren't used to (wheat berries) you will be down and in the fetal position in a hurry. So, assuming it's not a complete armageddon SHTF then we may as well plan ahead to have what we prefer and eat what allows us to feel our best. To me, that's what prepping is all about - not just survival but thriving by maintaining an acceptable level of "normalcy" while going thru it.
