If some kind of slow to empty stomach issue is contributing, can you do any form of excercise? I dance religiously, but found that it's targeted core excercises like situps and twisting the trunk and lifting legs that actually helps move things and provide relief.

I also was equal parts thrilled and dismayed to discover that bone broth based soups (i use a BB/tomato/garlic/onion base with italian seasoning, cauliflower, peppers and meat) also leads me to a rapid and thorough elimination- something about the concentrated histamines in the broth or the warmth triggering the emptying or :: shrug :: Added bonus, tastes pretty good too.

And please do consider the meditation/relaxation excercises- good body of research out there showing the good effects such programs bring about in our mind-body connections.

Tweakette, I'll be keeping you in my thoughts till I hear you've recovered fully.

Sometimes, you just have to get a different Dr. I don't know if you can do that, but if you can ...

I've seen some Dr's in the previous few years kind of metaphorically throw their hands up and go in to "They Can't Sue Me if I Followed Standards of Care" mode... It's an ugly thing to say about such a fine group of Professionals, but I've seen it enough it definitely seems to be a pattern. This was in relation to several different patients, different Dr's, different Insurances... The patients all people close to me.

Sometimes you just need a different Dr...

@Meemur, I was already doing that - apple a day plus oatmeal with chia in the AM. Then I added psyllium , despite already eating fiber at every meal (vegetables, salad, brown rice , sweet potato) .
The psyllium actually made things worse - it just added "more cars to the traffic jam " LOL. I didn't eat for 3 days as I was so full and nothing was moving.

This is a beta receptor-related motility issue, I am convinced. All the fiber and water in the world won't help if peristalsis isn't happening and it doesn't seem to be.

I had a barium swallow test for the stomach issue and it took nearly 8 days for it all to leave (I watched LOL).

And if it is motility then this entire class of drugs is going to cause me a problem, and switching won't help. And according to the cardio this is the only class of drugs that can do what they need it to do for me to survive the surgery.

Oils, suppositories etc help if it "gets near the exit" and some may meander down there in a week but not enough to really feel well.

I didn't bother to read through all the comments, so I don't know if anyone else has recommended this. I will say that Senna Tea is freaking amazing if you have constipation! You can get it in just about any grocery store.

Here is some info on it. I've used it a few times in my life and I can attest that this stuff works!
You don't want to use it every day, however. Oh, and don't let it steep too long, or you'll be on the toilet all day. Just let it steep 3-5 minutes.

My experience with Metopolol sort of mirrors yours; the bowels were, as politely as I can put it, unproductive.
BetaBlockers are supposed to mellow you out and relax you barring any real stress inducing situations like maybe an impending bus crash.

It made me so 'relaxed' I didn't trust myself to drive. Argued w/ PCP and said she needed to crack the books for an alternative and not prescribe by formularies and MDS averages.

She came up with Carvedilol - has been a whole lot better. No drug induced bowel obstructions either.

Tabasco peppers work wonders, your digestive track will try to flush that out by the next day. Eat the ones out of the Texas's Pete or Trappey's bottles. Don't plan on travel the next day though.

I used to have serious constipation problems when I was younger, Gallbladder surgery took care of that, one extreme to the other. Good luck with your health woes.

I would add that a good probiotic and prebiotic supplement might help. Works wonders for me. Medication had affected my digestion and the probiotic and prebiotic straightened it out. I stay on them as part of my daily routine.

Prayers for you Tweakette, that you receive relief soon.

Ray peat carrot salad helped me with regularity. Grate a carrot, add a splash of apple cider vinegar and olive oil. Season with pepper or whatever. Cheap, healthy and can't hurt you. Unless you eat a ton.

Nothing unreal exists
Also, Vitamin C in increasing doses (to tolerance) can help with constipation.
I was going to make the same suggestion. Also, I see web pages on-line, including from The Linus Pauling Institute and Johns Hopkins, saying that it may lower BP as well. Don't know about drug interactions, or other effects in your situation, so you might want to ask.

Prayers for you Tweak. I’m stuck on the same class of meds for afib issues and have been dealing with the rolling anxiety. It’s awful. Haven’t experienced the other side effects that you’re plagued with, thank God. Hang in there. We need you.

Many prayers for you. I am recovering from breast cancer surgery and can only relate to the constipation. It’s been awful. I pray they get you sorted out.

I see no one here has suggested this, but find a place that does High Colonics.
It will clear everything out and then take some suggestions from the members here to keep it cleared out.
(coconut oil, maybe an apple without the skin, Vit C, etc)
I saw a study that fiber just adds to the backup and makes it more serious.

After my hysterectomy..consitipation was a BIG NO NO ... absolutely nothing that involved pushing or using those muscles allowed. So I took Colace ...a stool softener regularly for a month. Worked wonders...can you take that with your meds?

Tweakette, I'm so sorry you are having to go through this miserable situation without the help of a good doctor. The combined think tank of Timebomb2000 has offered up some good solutions...praying one of them gives you some relief and also that your upcoming surgery is uneventful and successful.
