Hundreds in Publishing Industry Sign Letter to Block Trump Book Deals

Author Barry Lyga has shared an open letter signed by publishing workers showing opposition to any publisher that signs President Trump or members of his administration for book deals.

“Traditionally, members of an outgoing administration can—and do—rely on the cushion of a fat book contract with a healthy advance,” Lyga wrote in an email last week to Publishers Weekly.

“In the case of the Trump Administration and its history of outrages, lies, and incitement to insurrection, we cannot allow this to stand. No one should be enriched for their contribution to evil,” he said.

The letter titled No Book Deals for Traitors reads in part:

As members of the writing and publishing community of the United States, we affirm that participation in the administration of Donald Trump must be considered a uniquely mitigating criterion for publishing houses when considering book deals.

“Son of Sam” laws exist to prevent criminals from benefiting financially from writing about their crimes. In that spirit, those who enabled, promulgated, and covered up crimes against the American people should not be enriched through the coffers of publishing.

We are writers, editors, journalists, agents, and professionals in multiple forms of publishing. We believe in the power of words and we are tired of the industry we love enriching the monsters among us, and we will do whatever is in our power to stop it.

Publishing company Simon & Schuster recently canceled Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-MO) book after he took part in a constitutional effort to challenge the 2020 presidential election results.

However, conservative publisher Regnery announced Monday that his book, The Tyranny of Big Tech, will debut in the spring.

“Regnery is proud to stand in the breach with him. And the warning in his book about censorship obviously couldn’t be more urgent,” said the company’s president and publisher Thomas Spence.

During an interview Tuesday on MSNBC, Lincoln Project founder Steve Schmidt criticized Republicans who continue to support President Trump.

“It will be held to account by the judgment of history, by the judgment of decent Americans. It will be held to account by corporate America as they look for jobs, by corporate America as they seek donations,” Schmidt claimed.

“They will not write their history. We will write their history. And their shame will last forever. … They are carved like etching into granite, granite, onto history’s list of billings in the country,” he stated.

The cancelling of Trump continues.

Still need a publisher to self-publish.

No you don't. I've published over 50 books, 11 of them self-pubbed without a publisher. Once you have an audience, so long as you can pay for the cover artist and editor and marketing people yourself, you don't really need a publisher. All new series I write are now self-pubbed. New books in my older series will still go through the publisher because they have right of first refusal, but that's okay. I think that, for me, being hybrid is good at this point in time.

For DJT? He'll do fine without a publisher, if he chooses.

There's also this relatively 'new' concept, called self-publishing. However, Amazon seems to have the market on that and they don't care for Trump. That still leaves a lot of smaller self-publishing outlets. I figure if that crap 50 shades can be published, something truly worthwhile like Trump's memoirs of being inside the WH would be an incredible best seller.

Then it's time for Americans to start boycotting those publishers! Let them feel the financial pain they are injecting with their blocking of Trump's or any Trump officials' future books.

WTH?

You need a printing company. That’s it.

On a more sensible note...

I hate that they're doing this and to do it under Son of Sam laws is even more reprehensible.

This has to stop. But when and how?
I'm thinking it will stop with the history that will be made today with the military arrest of all traitors and other subversives at the Capitol. It will stop with the knowledge that on Jan. 21, 2021, Trump had restored, on July 4, 2020, the Constitutional Republic of America of our Forefathers that history (and traitors at the time) had buried for 234 years.

Ironic considering books sales for the big swamp dwellers is how their payoffs get laundered...
Thank you, I was about to post this but you already said it.

This doesn't stop Trump or his former advisors from publishing, it stops them from getting the really high "advanced" contracts that have been a popular way to get money "legally" to retired politicians.

Things like 5 million dollars in advances when the book is lucky to sell 100,000 copies are good examples of that one, I mean Trump really would sell books but a lot of them don't sell nearly enough to make the "advances" believable from a pure profit motive - they are legal payoffs.

I'd buy that book.

I probably know a lot that would be in it but I want to hear what they are so afraid of being heard.

I really expected swamp draining so if the book really is an expose I'd question why nothing was done when he had the power to do something.

This is an opportunity for new publishing companies to spring up.

In my lifetime I have known two very talented authors who had their manuscripts rejected while we continued to get the same old from the same old.

Amazon has helped to change that but I'm sure they've jumped on the commies' bandwagon too. If the President prints a book I'll find a way to buy it.

I’ve known many authors whose work was rejected by publishing houses.

There are countless stories of authors typing up and submitting classics penned by Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and more, just to have them rejected repeatedly.

My story of coming back from the dead HEALED of cancer has now been heard by millions of people and was featured in a documentary. Guess how many publishers have contacted me? Zero.

The world of traditional publishing is way different than it was just 20 years ago.

This too shall pass.
If Trump wants to get a book out for people to read, there are many ways to do that. Like some others here, I have contacts who know how to do it, and would gladly help him do it! Sarah Hoyt, for starters. Peter Grant, Dave Freer, my daughter, and a number of others. All are Trump supporters and experienced self-publishers.

I posted the article from the OP on Sarah Hoyt's MeWe chat, and will put in on her group page, too. Will see what comes of that.

As long as you don't get to fancy with the book cover a small printing operation can do this it may take a little longer but it can be done, the problem is finding stores willing to ignore people trying to keep them from selling it as such books will fly off the shelves.

If I had the money I could build a printing operation that I could rase cain with in the political world with each election.
I would offer to print fliers and letters for any one I felt was worthy of holding office. They just have to provide volunteer's to do the post press work.

It is nice of them to put themselves on a list of people to boycott in the future.

Once a month Trump can self-publish another book in the continuing series called "Your Government: (Insert government official name here) and What They Have Done Since Taking Office" and do a biography of everything that has been done since that official took office, good and bad, past and present. Provable fact only to avoid charges of slander. I am thinking start with some of the minor officials to get the interest to build, and then start laying the pipe to the heavy hitters in Washington. Then sit back with popcorn and watch the show.

The liberal assholes will publish Das Kapital and Mein Kampf, but won’t publish the memoirs of a recent President of the United States? That won’t last long- not with 80 million+ voters behind him...

:rofl:Sure. Go ahead. Don't publish it.
Geez, that stopping an author from publishing and succeeding died out years ago. If Trump wants to publish, he can self publish. And all his fans will buy the book directly from him if they can't find it in the store.
Sorry but I read way too many authors that self publish and have no problem doing it. Unsurprisingly, many of them are much better at writing than those that the publishing houses support. They write stories that I can easily get tied up in and spend hours reading, get addicted to the characters and feel the emotions that they are experiencing, and picture them as real people.

Almost all of my favorite contemporary authors are self-published now. And if they aren't, it's because they were still under contract, and in most cases, they are trying desperately to get out of those contracts because they are very disadvantageous for the author. Most authors make much more money for their many hours of work if they self-publish, so there's no advantage to going with a publisher.

No.

85% of my published sales are ebook, and the publisher gets 40% of net from the vendors.

I self-pub as ebook and POD paperbook through Ingram. There are slightly less physical book sales due to the cost of the paperback, but I make more money because I get 100% of the payment from vendors.
