We had an interesting gifting experience today. Here's the background:
my daughter has been mostly homeschooled. My dad has been crazy about math, being an engineer. He made me hate math as a kid. The first time he saw my daughter (since a toddler) at 9 years old, he reduced her to tears, drilling her about math. The subject became taboo if he wanted to interact with us. Fast forward- she's 15, in her 5th semester in college as an English major and a very highly gifted writer. She's had AP algebra...twice (reinforcement). I continue to get asked by family if she's doing any math. Today she received a gift from my sister (electrical engineer) of 3 books- Pre-algebra, Math Doesn't Suck, and Algebra. After our collective rant was over, I got a return label from Amazon. As an English major, I think all she needs to do is know how to make change (these days for board games) and adjust a recipe. Even as a nurse, I've never had to use enough math to justify being tortured taking calculus (messing up my GPA), and barely needed any algebra. I think taking AP algebra will probably get my daughter through life just fine. Anyway, she still has to take collage math.
