Is the feared gang boss ‘Barbecue’ now the most powerful man in Haiti?

Jimmy Chérizier says he is leading Haiti’s poor against corrupt government forces but experts point to a dark and violent past

Murals in the pauperized Haitian slums he rules liken him to the Argentinian guerrilla Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
In interviews, he poses as a God-fearing Caribbean Robin Hood and celebrates freedom fighters and agitators including Fidel Castro, Thomas Sankara and Malcolm X.

“I like Martin Luther King, too,” the Haitian gang boss Jimmy Chérizier told the New Yorker journalist Jon Lee Anderson when they met last year. “But he didn’t like fighting with guns, and I fight with guns.”

The stunning gang-led insurrection against Haiti’s government has catapulted Chérizier, a raffish, rifle-wielding 47-year-old mobster, into the international headlines – a place history suggests he enjoys.

Haiti: what caused the gang violence crisis and what might happen next?

Over the past five years the Haitian outlaw – who has emerged as the main spokesman for the gang uprising against Prime Minister Ariel Henry – has welcomed a succession of foreign reporters to his gangland domain hoping to justify what he calls his noble – if bloody – crusade to defend his country’s famished urban poor.

“I’m not a thief. I’m not involved in kidnapping. I’m not a rapist. I’m just carrying out a social fight,” Chérizier told the Associated Press last year while sat outside a bullet-pocked house.

In a 2022 interview with Vice, Chérizier called his ragtag favela army “a sociopolitical structure and force that is fighting on behalf of the vulnerable”.

Experts say the truth about Chérizier – who is best known as simply Babekyou (Barbecue) – is far more complicated and unsavory.

Born during the 1970s, during the brutal and corrupt reign of Baby Doc Duvalier, Chérizier has previously said he was one of eight siblings and lost his father at the age of five. The children grew up in Delmas, one of the rundown Port-au-Prince communities he now runs, by a mother who hawked fried chicken on the streets.

By Chérizier’s account, it was his mother’s occupation that earned him the nickname Barbecue, although many claim that a habit of incinerating his victims was the real reason.

Before establishing himself as Haiti’s most influential gang kingpin, Chérizier was a member of the country’s national police. He worked for the Unité départementale de maintien d’ordre, a riot squad whose members have been accused of shooting protesters dead.

The motto of Haiti’s police is “proteger et servir”: to protect and serve. But Chérizier – who has also publicly voiced admiration for François “Papa Doc” Duvalier, Baby Doc’s father – appears not to have honoured those values.

He was expelled from the force in 2018 for alleged involvement in a litany of crimes, including a horrific massacre that year in a slum called La Saline in which 71 people were killed, seven women raped and 400 homes torched.

Chérizier, who leads a gang alliance called the G9 Family and Allies, has denied wrongdoing. But the former police officer has been sanctioned by both the US and the UN for his alleged crimes. The G9 controls some of Port-au-Prince’s largest slums and most important road arteries allowing Chérizier to paralyze the country on several occasions, cutting off petrol supplies and forcing schools and hospitals to close.

“He is a criminal businessman,” said Louis-Henri Mars, director of the Haitian non-profit Lakou Lapè.
“In 2020 me and other peace-builders went to see him to ask him to stop his assaults on the Bel Air neighbourhood [in Port-au-Prince] and he made some promises,” Mars added. “But he still continued burning down people’s houses. He listens, but in the end he does what is in his best interest.”

Speaking to the Financial Times, Mars compared the gangster to a volcano, constantly poised to erupt. “He has some charisma, he’s a thinker, but he’s a violent individual also.”

Like many Haitian crime bosses, Chérizier is also a man with high-level political connections. He was rumoured to be close to the former president Jovenel Moïse, whose 2021 assassination paved the way for the current mayhem.

Some suspect Chérizier has political aspirations of his own.

“Barbecue is engaging and really is a natural politician … when I met him, I knew straightaway [he] was a force to be reckoned with,” the Sky News correspondent Stuart Ramsay wrote after their 2023 encounter.

“He sees himself as a revolutionary fighting against the dark corruption of government and oligarch businessmen, but make no mistake, he is an out-and-out gangster.”

Diego Da Rin, an International Crisis Group Haiti specialist, said Chérizier’s attempt to paint himself as a compassionate if iron-fisted champion of the ghetto was not entirely without basis. “He gives women presents on Mother’s Day. He gives money to families that don’t have the means to send their kids to school. But people are aware that he is [also] one of the main people responsible for the nightmare they are living,” Da Rin said.

That nightmare plumbed new depths this week after Chérizier announced he was leading a massive gang assault against Henry’s government, and ordered his gunmen out on to the streets to sow chaos. Since the attacks began on 29 February, criminals have burned dozens of businesses and police stations, forced the international airport to close, freed thousands of hardened criminals from jail, and laid siege to the port.

Henry, who was in Africa when the uprising began, has said nothing and been unable to return home.
“Unfortunately, Barbecue is now the most powerful man in Haiti,” said Judes Jonathas, an independent consultant based in Port-au-Prince.

Folks there is a reason Elon is leaving the vids of "President Elect" BBQ ripping strips off a calf muscle to chew and the Hazelwood MO Skullcracker up. Its to get us all braced up. That has been life in South Africa for two decades now.

Jack Dorsey would never have left those up. Elon is not a saint but at least he understands America has a 1st Amendment and not pansy crippled under D Notices like the UK press must operate. It did no favors censoring our twitter for a decade. Yes its vile, ogrish and distasteful, some say disrespects victims and kin but you understand viscerally what we face.

Make sure you watch whatever vids Elon *permits* on twitter as the outcry will rise soon they are too graphic/honest. Haiti has always been like this since 1814 overthrow of French colonial rule. They turned to the dark side to assist them and wholly welcomed voodoo to win.

At an obvious cost. The civilized world has the sense to be ashamed of cannibalism and its cult ritual adherents know its illegal and keep it private.

Now you understand why this was necessary March 1st. They know what is coming.

Haiti............another White paradise built to modern civilization standards at the wonderment of those Blacks in that society only to fall in disrepair when taken over solely by those same Blacks who watched it all develop in front of their eyes.

The idea of Blacks on their own are incapable of building and maintaining a civilization as a racist observation falls flat on its face when you consider those territories that were once under colonial White rule when take back over by Asians (such as Hong Kong and Vietnam).

Where in those situation Asians on a large scale of the population having an equal or slightly higher average cognitively abilities to Whites have been able to sustained themselves quite well without any further White management makes it a little hard to justify the social belief that all humans are cognitively/social behaviorally the same.

Now right there......everything I just mentioned if I did on TV would put me in the same camp as George Lincoln Rockwell in the eyes of the media.

The reality I've seen is this fact..............Blacks collectively as a race are full grown adults with the cognitive abilities of a 12 to 14 year children. Remember your "good smart Blacks and bad idiotic Whites" are the individual subjective exceptions to the rule and those statements fail whenever implemented in the large scale assessment of racial behavioral as it applies to a socioeconomic system.

Its reality based on evidence until someone proves me wrong.........and by proven wrong I don't mean with the exceptions of Thomas Sowell or Clarence Thomas but on a large scale racial justification from the facts that my observation is not correct.

I will keep an open mind and am willing to change my racial position if the evidence takes me there................but I've yet to find it.

So anyone out there offended by my observations please give me the evidence to the contrary.

Great, Albertville Alabama will get flooded with these folks. They’re coming in droves to work in the poultry industry. Our cultural dynamics are changing. I was driving down our most affluent street the other day and Haitians were walking everywhere. This is going to turn out badly for my County shortly.
Yep, Albertville is horrible. These are the nastiest people you've ever seen. I know a few people here in Albertville that are bringing them in too. The head of the Episcopal Church is one of them. Retired Col will be speaking at the Commission Wednesday at 9:00. It was in the Gleam. I'm planning on going.

Am being a bit picky, but it actually goes back to 1791 when the slave rebellion started.

And based on this rebellion a lot of whites were killed, the Abolition Movement died in the south. Before say 1804, when the rebellion ended, the south had more Abolition Groups/Societies than in the north.

2nd to that like you said the voodoo religion moved in.

3rd ever since the French and English moved out. There has been one corrupt government overthrow violently, and replaced by another corrupt government.

Note:

The United States occupation of Haiti began on July 28, 1915, when 330 U.S. Marines landed at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after the National City Bank of New York convinced the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, to take control of Haiti's political and financial interests. The July 1915 invasion took place following years of socioeconomic instability within Haiti that culminated with the lynching of President of Haiti Vilbrun Guillaume Sam by a mob angered by his decision to order the executions of political prisoners. The invasion and subsequent occupation was promoted by growing American business interests in Haiti, especially the National City Bank of New York, which had withheld funds from Haiti and paid rebels to destabilize the nation through the Bank of the Republic of Haiti with an aim at inducing American intervention.

From coup to chaos: 20 years after the US ousted Haiti’s president

If Biden is serious about democracy, he has a lot of work to do in Port-au-Prince

Twenty years ago this week, the United States government placed Haiti’s elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, on a plane sent from Guantanamo Bay and headed for the Central African Republic with a false flight plan. The flight consummated a coup d’état that ended a decade of hard-won democratic progress.
It also began two decades of dismantling of democracy by U.S.-backed Haitian regimes. Haiti is “celebrating” the coup anniversary without a single elected official in office and no elections in sight, while most Haitians face catastrophic humanitarian conditions.
The U.S. government officially denies a coup took place and claims it did not force Aristide to flee. But the February 29, 2004 coup d’état successfully removed a regional leader who resisted complying with U.S. prescriptions. The following 20 years of supporting governments opposed to Aristide — most of them unelected or elected in flawed elections— have prevented the emergence of other non-compliant Haitian leaders.
But as the United States faces its own election this year that President Biden calls an existential threat to our democracy, and struggles with the arrival of Haitians fleeing the horrific conditions that our policies helped generate, it is time to reconsider this approach.
The United States actually restored Aristide before it toppled him. In 1994, President Clinton launched Operation Restore Democracy to return Aristide from his exile caused by a 1991 military coup. Aristide left office at the end of his term in 1996, in the first-ever transfer of power from one elected Haitian president to another. He returned to the presidential palace in Haiti’s second democratic transfer of presidential power, in 2001.
But U.S. leaders did not like the direction Haiti’s restored democracy took. They particularly resented President Aristide challenging the United States by trying to raise the minimum wage for workers sewing Americans’ clothes, defying “small government” dogma by increasing government investment in education and healthcare, speaking out against the unjust international order, and demanding $21 billion from France as restitution of the “independence debt” that France extorted in 1825.

We need to stay out of their business, just like Ukraine we don't do anything but screw it up further.

And as a note about Russia shirley they have enough sense to not get mixed up in Haiti, won't be nothing but trouble when the next government comes to power. Forget about the US.

There are consequences to practicing voodoo for generations...

Summerthyme
I'm going to say (I may miss the date and the person, but don't hold it against me the thought is valid) back when the quake hit, and I think it was Pat Robertson, said something along the same lines, the progressive left booed him off the air.

It's in the same realm as having unprotected sex has consequences for generations.

Or even eating the fruit in the garden, has consequences for generations.

Well, I've got some issues blaming human spiritual activities for natural phenomena like giant earthquakes, tornadoes and floods (while acknowledging that God does have the power and ability), but inviting dark forces into your lives over the generations is absolutely a factor in behavior repugnant to any decent human.

Yeah I get that, no problem. And if it was Pat, he might have been out of line, in at least saying it publicly, without the Lord saying it, I personally don't have any info from the Man on high on that, but the idea, of voodoo destroying a people is valid as you noted. Whatever form that may take.

Hemorrhoids, mice, earthquakes, or delusional thinking concerning the dark powers, etc.....

PRESS RELEASE | March 11, 2024

Statement: U.S. military conducts operation to augment security of the U.S. Embassy in Haiti

At the request of the Department of State, the U.S. military conducted an operation to augment the security of the U.S. Embassy at Port-au-Prince, allow our Embassy mission operations to continue, and enable non-essential personnel to depart.
This airlift of personnel into and out of the Embassy is consistent with our standard practice for Embassy security augmentation worldwide, and no Haitians were on board the military aircraft. Our Embassy remains focused on advancing U.S. government efforts to support the Haitian people, including mobilizing support for the Haitian National Police, expediting the deployment of the United Nations-authorized Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, and accelerating a peaceful transition of power via free and fair elections.
As announced in September 2023, the Department of Defense is postured to provide robust enabling support for the MSS, including planning assistance, information sharing, airlift, communications, and medical support.” Statement: U.S. military conducts operation to augment security of the U.S. Embassy in Hai

Unless they can strap their soldiers to the missiles, they still need a staging area, complete with a military base and air strip.
Their boomers are armed with missiles that have multiple warheads. They can be launched while submerged. Our response time is nothing if they launch. We of course can do the same to them. Then anyone alive can walk a nuclear waste land if that is what you want to do. As far as staging area they are currently using Venezuela to bring troops through the open southern border. Nobody needs Haiti. It is already happening.

Back in 2021...
DHS Secretary Mayorkas says approximately 10-12 thousand of Haitians detained at the southern border have been released into the US. "It could be even higher," he adds when pressed by @FoxNewsSunday Chris Wallace.

In 2024 we now have way more here today than in 2021, tens of thousands have been released and flown in by DHS to import third world chaos all over America.

Expect even more Haitians now to arrive with their collapse.

You'll be relieved to know Border Agents (and Air Marshalls) no longer have to serve sandwiches to illegals at the border.
That's because Biden is flying the illegals from foreign airports directly into American airports.

However, when asked which airports and the numbers flown in
they refused to reveal that information as would cause local law enforcement vulnerabilities.

"a total of 76,582 Haitians who’d flown in through mid-September 2023. Almost all of them flew into three airports, 47,768 of them into just one airport."
View: https://twitter.com/CabelloAuden/status/1767250937708679507

Back in September 2023, 76.5k Haitians were all flown into 3 airports...over 50% in one they refuse to disclose.

This is not counting the tens of thousands that came across the border. Some reports were near 30k at one time.

Since September 2023, JoeBama's imported tens of thousands more here today.

Now with Haiti collapsing, expect tens of thousands more now en-route...

Don’t forget, tens of thousands of Barbecue’s countrymen have flooded the USA.

I filmed and reported the “Haitian Invasion” in 2021-2022, in my hometown of Del Rio.

Many were flown into the heartland, via Laughlin AFB, because Congressman (TX-23) @TonyGonzales4TX “vented the pressure” at the border.

Not only did TG’s actions spread covid, STDs and other diseases, he also allowed their worldview, character and way of life into America’s cities.

Voters must FIRE Gonzales in the Texas CD23 Primary Runoff on May 28.
