"Let me hear you turn the lock," Reva demanded of Chuck. In his bedroon Chuck smiled to himself. Without saying a word, he turned the lock and listened as the sisters drug a chair over and jammed it under the doorknob.

It was hard for the man not to laugh out loud, the good ladies didn't seem to realize that the bedroom door opened inward. Chuck had no intention of upsetting the women, he kinda liked all three of them; they just seemed a little short in the common sense department, that's all.

Tired, Chuck slept soundly, and woke up needing to use the restroom. As carefully and silently as possible, he opened the bedroom door, walked quietly across the kitchen floor, slipping his feet into old shoes to make the trek outside. Thinking fast on his feet, Chuck grabbed the key from the nail by the door, and went outside to take care of business.

Returning, Chuck turned the doorknob, and found it locked. Using the key, he unlocked the door and walked in. Leaving his shoes, he walked to his room and went in. Upon a minute of silent contemplation, he went back out into the kitchen and started coffee.

Chuck had enough of the good ladies foolishness, he was hungry and had a big need for coffee. Sitting at the table, he was drinking coffee when Dory walked in. "How did you get back in the house?"

"With the key," Chuck said levelly.

"Well, give it here!" she demanded.

"No, I will not be locked out of my own house. You ladies are welcome to stay until after breakfast, and then you will be on your own to choose one, two or three of the houses. You will be out of here by noon. I will have Mark come down and talk with you, and you can make arrangements to get the rest of your things. I have hunting to do, so you are not welcome to stay here."

"Well, that's kinda a nasty and mean thing to do; you were touted as a gentleman." Dory retorted; "that's not fair."

"Oh, it's very fair. This is my house, neither you or your sisters have any say as to what goes on here.." Chuck thought he was being very reasonable, in trying to deal with the sisters and their silliness.

"May I have some coffee?" Dory asked in a small voice, hesitantly gesturing toward the stove.

"Help yourself," Chuck leaned back in his chair and looked out the window.

Dory went to the dish drainer and selected a mug. Using the side of her dress as a hot pad, Dory filled her cup halfway and walked over to fill Chuck's cup. He nodded and set the mug on the table.

"Thank you," he said quietly, picking up the mug, watching her out of the corner of his eye. Dory tentatively took a sip and made a face. Going to the pump, she dribbled in a little cool water in and tasted it again. Smiling broadly, she gave a ray of sunshine grin to Chuck and sat down across the table from him.

"Ahh," she said in a whisper, "this is good."

The whispering woke Donny. The fact that one of the kids was trying to lift his eyelid and look inside, was beside the point. The young adult wasn't sure what time it was, he wasn't sure he had enough sleep to get through the day, but obviously, it was happening.

"We gots breakfast ready, are you hungry?" Ada said in a hurry, hanging back, not wanting to get to close to the large guy.

"Uggg," Donny mumbled, "yeah, breakfast, what are we eating.?"

"Pancakes," Ada whispered with a smile. "Pancakes," she said with a dreamy tone, "wonderful pancakes, Sally said we could have two each, all to ourselves and not have to share."

Seamus paced the floor; around the Livingroom twice and straight down the middle once. Punky was trotting trying to keep up with the nervous, frightened man as he thundered across the floor.

"Mr Seamus Dad, will ya tell me where babies come from?" Punky was almost pleading for information. Seamus reacted by jerking to a halt.

"No Sonny, I'll not be answering any questions right now," Seamus blanched whiter as Phoebe yelled in the bedroom.

"But Dad," Punky thought he was being very reasonable, the question and answer might have helped Seamus forget about his fright.

It happened that the second circle around the living room, Calvin's foot stuck out a little far and Punky tripped and hit the floor.

"You dim bulb," Calvin hissed, "ain't I been telling ya that it's not always about you. Ask him three days from now, and you're more likely to get an answer."

"But I forget," Punky retorted crossly. "My rememberer is only good for so long, and I know this question is gonna get crowded out by twenty more."

"Well then, you don't deserve knowin the answer," Calvin said with infuriating logic. "If you can't remember the question, you sure as shootin won't remember the answer."

"Sometimes, I'd like to punch you," Punky said under his breath, but not quiet enough that Calvin couldn't hear.

Calvin grabbed Punky by the shirt and out the door into the afternoon they went. Calvin was long and lean, and Punky was short and stout. Max climbed into the small tree beside the brook and settled in as an interested observer.

The two boys traded punches; each one landing a couple of good, solid jabs. "You been askin fer this," Calvin bloodied Punky's nose.

"I don't know who made you king commander of this family; I'm tired of you actin so high and mighty, bein a stinky know it all." Punky landed a swing close to Calvin's eye.

"That hurt, you jerk," Calvin was really getting mad. Doubling up both fists, he pitched a major defense against Punky. Punky went down in a heap, covering his head with his arms. "Uncle," he cried out, "no more."

"I'm gonna tell you something, just once," Calvin warned. "I'm gonna thump you every time you get to actin stupid. Your rememberer better do a good job of remembering what I'm telling ya.. Mr. Seamus and Miss Phoebe are just the finest two people around and your just being a stupid jerk."

Calvin was mad enough to finally make a lasting impression on Punky. "You got any problems with what I'm sayin?" he challenged Max.

'Nope," Max climbed down and dusted his hands off. "Suits me," he mentioned nonchalantly, heading for the house.

Calvin stood at the front door until Seamus turned his back to pace down the living room. Scurrying in, he made for the bathroom on the double. A short time later, he was clean and presentable, sitting next to Max on the couch. The washup in no way hid the beautiful purple black eye, but Calvin was cool.

It was sometime before Punky came in, subdued and not meeting anyone's eyes. Seamus was distracted by a loud yell from Phoebe, and then there was the sound of a newborn's cry.

"Oh Glory, Oh Glory, Oh Glory," Seamus stood stock still and listened with tears in his eyes to the beautiful sound.

Doc. Trish appeared with a small, well wrapped bundle. "Seamus, you have a son," she announced with a smile. Seamus accepted the small child in his free hand, as Suisan refused to get down from the other side.

Seamus was just getting ready to thank God for Phoebe's delivery, when there was another newborn cry, and it didn't come from the babe in his arms.

"Saints preserve us," Seamus was yelling at the top of his lungs. That startled the new babe into crying, as Suisan patted his cheek and said something unintelligible.

"Seamus, put those babies down if you feel like fainting, and for heavens sake, don't worry Phoebe any more than necessary," Trish snapped

Seamus stood in the middle of the living room and rocked slightly back and forth on his feet.

Assessing the situtation with a quick glance, Calvin darted in and snatched the newborn from Seamus's weakening grasp. "Get Suisan," he ordered Punky. "We don't want her hurt when he falls."

And, fall he did. Suisan was a handful for Punky, twisting and squirming to get out of her brothers grasp and try to get to her Daddy. Punky slapped her hard on the leg. telling her to settle down. or she would get another wap.

Total astonishment gripped the child as she pouted and rubbed her leg. "I don't like you." she said very plainly.

"Then behave yourself," Calvin admonished. "Your time as a spoiled princess has come to an end."

"I don't want it too," Suisan retorted in very clear and plain English. The brothers looked at one another. obviously, the little miss was a faker with her usual garbled talk.

"From now on, you will join us and behave like a girl that loves her family." Calvin walked around with the new baby on his shoulder, patting his back softly.

"Whoever doesn't have a baby, needs to come in here and get the little girl," Trish hollered. "Max, you get a wash cloth and some cold water and get Seamus on his feet."

Punky drug his feet going to the bedroom, and when he just got past Calvin, Calvin took his foot and gave the young man a hard shove.

"Dang it Calvin, whadda ya do that for?"

"Doc Tricia meant now, not two weeks from now." Calvin was in his take charge mode.

Donny and his crew had pancakes for breakfast. Sally was trying very hard, but she didn't let the griddle get hot enough, so some were very doughy. Donny. for all his tender young years, smiled broadly and asked for another. Ma never had troubles like this, and Sally wasn't Ma; but Donny understood well. that this was a make or break moment.

The three sisters cooked breakfast for themselves and Chuck, A few pieces of fried venison meat from a jar and they fussed about not having any bread.

"I'm not a cook," Chuck explained to no one in particular. "I eat real plain, cause that's what I know how to do."

"That's a terrible way to live your life," Reva clucked her tongue like an old mother hen. "Have you ever been married?" the next question came fast and furious.

"I have," Chuck said tiredly, "I had a wife and children that vanished in the cleansing wind. Obviously, they gave lip service to the power of salvation, because they aren't here."

"I'm sorry," Dory offered the apology for all three of the ladies. "We didn't mean to be so insensitive." and she shot a dirty look at Reva.

Reva pretended not to notice the look, but it did register. Drawing her lips together tightly, Reva took the pan to the sink and stared to pump water to wash it.

Chuck erupted in a bear curdling scream, forbidding the woman to put water in his pan. Reva almost dropped the skillet in fright, and it was rescued by Pricilla.

"You ladies leave my things alone, get your wraps, I'm going to show you the available houses and we will move your belongings within the hour." Chuck in an upset roar was a lion to be reckoned with, and the sisters meekly obeyed.

Mark was walking out of his drive way, when he noticed Chuck and the three ladies exiting Chuck's house. Mark was on his way down to welcome Seamus and Phoebes new child, when he decided that he better make sure everything was proper and above board with Chuck and the new women.

The ladies seemed to be under no duress, so Mark watched as he walked.

"What about the house on the other side of you?" Pricilla asked as she almost turned her nose up at the places for settlement.

"That's Gary's place and he's a meaner bas...… I mean cuss than I am. I'm going to tell you to leave him alone and don't try fixing him. You ladies will get your delicate sensibilities hurt in a big time way. We bachelor's are over here out of the way of the main group, because we want to be left alone."

"Did he have a family?" Reva asked with interest and curiosity dancing all over her face.

"They were recently killed," Chuck said in a low tone, and he could tell his words had absolutely no effect on the woman. Oh well, he thought. They cant say I didn't warn them.

Mark hailed them, and the four turned around to watch him approach. "Hi Mark," Chuck spoke with undisguised relief in his voice. "The ladies are interested in some of the houses, and I have to get ready to go hunting. Ladies," and Chuck tipped his hat. "Mark will take good care of you." and he fled into the calmness of his house.

"He certainly is a rude acting man," Pricilla sniffed. "Not sociable at all."

The silver haired lion turned on his considerable charm and had the ladies' traipsing through the houses at a reasonable speed.

"Are you ladies wanting to all live in one house together, or three separate ones?" Mark tried to get a handle on what he was dealing with.

"That's precisely what we cant agree upon" Reva spoke, sizing up Mark and his availability. She was happy until she got to his left hand and the gold wedding ring.

"I'm going to live in the house next to Chuck, all by myself," Dory boldly mentioned. "I like it best."

"I bet Chuck's a goner," Mark thought to himself.

Mark stood around, patiently waiting for the women to come to some sort of a decision. Finally. the last thread of patience he owned, snapped. "I'm going across the street to the clinic and to Seamus's place. You can get ahold of me there."

The ladies scaresly noticed, as busy as they were talking and comparing the houses. Dory had to pitch a minor fit when Reva started comparing 'her' place to the other two houses in consideration.

"No deal," Dory stated firmly, "that one's mine. There are five other places you two can crab and fuss over."

"Well isn't that just like you, the spoiled youngest to get your way." Pricilla sniped, "Not a thought given to the rest of us at all."

"If that's what you believe, then live with it." Dory turned around on her heel and marched back to Chuck's place to get her things. Letting herself in quietly, she was passing his open bedroom door, and couldn't help but look in.

There, standing in front of his dresser with his back to her, Chuck was thrusting his arms into his buckskin shirt. Dory felt her knees go weak, and she reached out for the door post. watching the muscles rippling under the skin. She must have made a slight noise, because Chuck whirled around and spat angry words at her. He wasn't kind, but Dory wasn't in any position to hear.

Tripping over herself to get out of his sight, she rushed down the hall to get the small amount of belongings from the bedroom. Almost running into the kitchen, she opened the door and let herself out. Going straight to 'her' house, she dumped her clothes and necessities on the dusty couch, and sat with trembling knees on the kitchen straight chair.

That was a mighty fine thing she had seen. Dory couldn't recollect a man having that sort of effect on her before. She couldn't recall the nice but insipid man her father had wanted her to marry. He was a blank thought in her mind. Only the picture of the indelibly imprinted Chuck had space and time.

Forcing herself to get up and move, Dory worked the pump handle and soon discovered she needed water to prime the squeaky, old leathers.

She waited until Reva and Priss started for Chucks, and then tagged along behind them. Drawing a pan of water, she started for home and met Chuck coming from the bedroom. He silently opened the door for her, and Dory passed by, giving him a very direct glance without a smile.

Not a word was said.

Mark went to Seamus's, in time to supervise Max wetting down the Scot to bring him around.

"Mark, I'm so glad you're here. We need a housekeeper for Phoebe. Her time wasn't easy and she is on bed rest for several weeks. Do you think Tess or Millie might come?"

Donny looked around the kitchen. He smiled his appreciation to Sally. letting her know that even with the breakfast clutter, she was doing a fine job of keeping the work area organized.

His young bride started the younger kids washing dishes, Cotton looked at Donny and said, "you gonna cut some wood for me to split. If ya don't, we're gonna be eatin a cold supper."

"Well then, I'd better get busy. I need to file the chain, so it'll be twenty minutes or so before I'm ready. How about kindling? Do you want to break some wood?" Donny asked the boy.

"Both the hatchet and the ax are dull. show me how to file and I'll try to sharpen them." Cotton was eager to learn, and Donny wanted to encourage him, so he sent the kid for a rat tail file, the only one he had seen around the place.

The two men worked on the tools, sitting side by side so Donny could monitor the ax sharpening.
Cotton paid attention and asked questions, worked intently and tried his hardest.

Donny finished the chain saw, looked at Cotton's work and told the boy, "good job." Donny's quiet praise lit Cotton up like a Christmas tree.

"Really?" Cotton drew a deep breath and almost wiggled like a puppy.

"Yes," Donny was authoritive, "You listened well, let me correct the angle with out protesting, and put a nice sharp edge on the ax. Well done."

Donny was remembering every time he had completed a task and Mark had given him the same praise. It was such a confidence booster to the young man, and gave him the life lessons to pass on to another generation.

The two of them cut all the downed timber in the woodyard, and then they moved to harnessing the workhorse and heading out into the brush to find another tree. "We always take our rifles and here is a 22 for you," Donny handed Cotton the old rifle that Mark has first given him. "Let me show you how to handle this. It's a single shot, so here are a handful of shells. Here's how to hold it, and how to line up a shot."

By the time the two returned to the place, Cotton had such a case of hero worship that Donny was elevated to the status of a saint.

Mark didn't bother Tess or Millie, he had in mind Reva and Pricilla. The two women were in the same place as when he left them, still debating the merits of the two places they desired. Mark had told both Phoebe and Trish that there were two ladies looking for jobs, as housekeepers/cooks/ and mother's helpers.

Both ladies looked like they would cry at the news, so relieved and happy that they would have help. "I'll be right back with the ladies," Mark hustled over to the sisters before they could settle on a house.

"Would you ladies like a job?" he asked, getting affirmative nods. The sisters were introduced to the good doctor and the new mama, choices were made, and Reva went to live with Trish and Bruce and Pricilla with Seamus and his crew.

From her house, Dory smiled at the near conscription of her sisters. That will keep those two meddling gals busy, she said to herself.

Mark had a job lined up for Dory, there was nothing worse than an unattached female loose in the community. They needed a teacher, and the two sisters had spilled the beans that Dory was a teacher. So, BINGO, his problem was neatly solved.

Three mischievous boy faces and fingers tapped excitedly on Clora's back door window. "Grandma, Grandma, open up, we came to help. Ma says we are blue ribbon certified potato droppers. We are gonna help you plant acres of potatoes."

"Well, my goodness; come in and let me get you some potatoes, and we'll go to the field and test you boys out." Clora was smiling at the boys and to Tess as she came hustling up to the door.

"Listen you little rascals, no more outrunning your Ma. In a lot of ways, this is still wilderness land and we have to be careful." Tess huffed a little as she stopped to catch her breath. "Grandma and I are going to work you kids until you walk home slow."

"Ahhh Ma, we were having fun," three voices spoke in unison, and Tess just shook her head. Her three little peas in a pod, thought, talked and laughed so closely together, they sounded like one.

Clora had buckets filled halfway with seed chunks, and they went trooping to the garden. Tess started each boy on a row and they walked slowly, dropping potatoes a foot apart. Clora really had to put her back into the shovel, covering up part of the plan. The boys walked steadily and calmly, until they were nine rows ahead of Clora and Tess.

"How many potatoes are left in the wash tub?" Clora called out, thankful for a moments rest. The boys went over to inspect and hollered back, "about a pail full apiece."

"Load them up, let's keep this potato planting machine going strong," Tess hollered. "Good gravy Ma, I believe I have created a monster." and the two women laughed as they kept on shoveling dirt over the cut and hardened off potatoes.

Mark got home in time to grab a shovel and lend his strength. "Grandad, look what we have done," and Mark sincerely praised the boys and their efforts.

Evening shadows were lengthening, when the potato planting spree came to a finish. There was stew warming on the stove, and the warmth of the kitchen felt good after the work accomplished in the coolish spring air.

"Do Andy and Judy ever come out of their house?" Tess questioned as she and Clora did the dishes.

"Sometimes, I believe they've had a rough patch to work through, but your right, they should be working on their gardens. It's for certain they couldn't help but hear our garden work, so they must be aware that it's time to be planting." Clora had a hitch in her back and twisted somewhat to ease the kink. "Ahh, that's better." she sighed. "I feel old tonight, those three are real firecrackers when they get going."

The three firecrackers were sound asleep on the couch, covered with a blanket. Mark sat in his chair, writing in his journal by lamplight. Clora and Tess sat at the kitchen table, finishing their coffee.

"I'm almost too tired to walk home," Tess mumbled, "I'm as bad as the kids."

"Then stay," Clora urged. "I'm not far from taking myself to bed, so help yourself."

It was barely full on dark when Mark looked up and discovered he was the only one awake. Shrugging his shoulders, he put the journal away and went to bed himself.

Teaching does not last all day, so Dory will be on the hunt for Chuck.

That leaves Gary to fend off the other two sisters.
