Exclusive: Intelligence reports indicate Maoists have infiltrated Delhi's labour unions and workers' groups to incite violent protests

The Maruti Suzuki factory in Manesar was vandalised during protests in February. An ultraleft organisation is said to have instigated the mob.

If you thought the Maoist uprising is confined to the faraway badlands of Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, you've got another think coming.

Ultra-left organisations are steadily infiltrating labour unions and workers' groups in Delhi and the National Capital Region, intelligence agencies say. Information gathered by these agencies suggests that Delhi is emerging as a major urban base of ultra left ideology.

Front organisations of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) have let their members loose across the capital. Many of their members are said to be active in Delhi's satellite towns like Gurgaon and Ghaziabad.

Intelligence inputs indicate that the Maoists have the clearly defined objective of entering the workforce, becoming part of workers' associations, and motivating them to carry out violent protests.

One of the groups active in the national capital region is the Revolutionary Democratic Front. Intelligence inputs indicate they have penetrated various social fora, trade unions and workers' groups as well as bodies working for social empowerment.

Intelligence agencies have information that RDF has told its fraternal organisations to participate and lead in any retaliation against violence by dominant social classes. "This is not like AISA, the student body of the CPI(M-L). Their level of involvement is much higher; they are more like a Maoist overground," one Delhibased intelligence official says.

An intelligence report says that the group has "resolved to launch a militant campaign against caste violence".

Of Delhi's 11 districts, seven have a have strong ultra-left influence. They are Central, South, New Delhi, North-West, North, South-West and NorthEast. Sources say that the group has already developed a strong base in Delhi and the National Capital Region. Intelligence inputs indicate activity by ultra-left groups in states like Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Sources say Maoist cadres from left-wing affected states like Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are being regularly sent to Delhi.

The RDF is just one of such identified organisations. "There are several frontal organisations of CPI(Maoist) that have penetrated into unions, workers groups' and organisations working in the social sector," says a source.

Sources say the ultra-left cadres work in layers. The modus operandi of the group is aimed at provoking violence, starting from distributing pamphlets, distributing material related to Maoist ideology, holding rallies, aoist ideology, holding rallies, and finally penetrating protests and triggering more violence.

Anand Kumar, Professor of Sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University says such inputs cannot be dismissed out of hand but it is imperative to find reasons for this. "There needs to be engagement between policy makers, intelligence agencies and social scientists.

We need to know what a sufficient indicator for being ultra-left is," he says. The Maoist strategy of creating urban bases in cities was uncovered in Delhi with the arrest of Kobad Ghandy in 2009 on charges of spreading the ultra-left influence. The presence of ultra-left groups and their active participation came to the forefront when Intelligence Bureau gathered information that left-wing extremist groups had entered the Maruti workers' protests last year and instigated the workers to grievous violence.

There are intelligence inputs that ultra-left elements had even entered the Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement as well as the public protests after the Delhi gang rape case of December 16 last year. "These were instances where they instigated the mob. They have a planned strategy and there are inputs that they continue to do this," said an intelligence officer.

Somalia: Govt Calls for Calm After Mogadishu Protests Over Terrorist Chief's Arrest
2 July 2013

Mogadishu — Somalia's federal government has called for calm on Mogadishu streets after protesters took to the streets demanding the release of terrorist chief Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, Garowe Online reports.

"Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys is in good health and is currently in the custody of the Somali Federal Government," Somali Interior and National Security Minister Abdikarim Hussein Guled told a Tuesday press conference in Mogadishu, adding: "Sheikh Aweys will not be transferred over to any foreign government and we call upon the Mogadishu public to calm down".

Minister Guled warned against "some groups who are inciting the public with false information, and public incitement is a threat to peace, stability and governance".

On Monday, hundreds of people protested in Mogadishu between Banadir and Tarabunka junctions, with protestors shutting down local businesses, chanting anti-government slogans and demanding the release of Sheikh Aweys from prison.

Interior Minister Guled apologized for the violent incident on June 29, when Sheikh Aweys was transported by plane from Adado town in Galgadud region of central Somalia to Mogadishu by a group of parliamentarians, elders and warlords.

Somali security forces at the Mogadishu airport reportedly "used force" to arrest Aweys upon landing at the airport, while the group of parliamentarians, elders and warlords who accompanied Aweys to Mogadishu were "beaten up and arrested" by the security forces, but everyone was released except Aweys.

"This was an unfortunate and unplanned incident, and we apologize to the affected individuals," said Minister Guled.

Aweys escaped to his native region of Galgadud in late June 2013, after Al Shabaab death squads were sent to assassinate senior members of Al Shabaab militant group in Barawe coastal town of Lower Shabelle region, in southern Somalia. Al Shabaab death squads sent by Godane reportedly assassinated other senior Al Shabaab members, including Ibrahim Afghani and Moallim Burhan.

Egypt's new age of unrest is a taste of things to come

Mass street protests are symptom of unsustainability of IMF model in the face of environmental and energy challenges

An-alleged-member-of-the--009.jpg

Last night's ousting of President Mohamed Morsi by the Egyptian army comes as no surprise. Despite being Egypt's first freely elected leader, his attempts to override democratic checks and balances while grabbing unilateral executive power fuelled widespread simmering grievances. Although Adli Mansour, the new interim leader sworn in today by the army, promises to pave the way for new democratic elections, the fundamental drivers of Egyptian rage remain overlooked.

Morsi's key problem was that he had spent most of his energies on consolidating the reach of his party, the Muslim Brotherhood, rather than dealing with Egypt's entrenched social, economic and political problems. Indeed, Egyptian unrest is the consequence of a fatal cocktail of structural failures rooted in an unsustainable global model of industrial civilisation - addicted to fossil fuels, wedded fanatically to casino capitalism, and convinced, ostrich-like, that somehow technology alone will save us.

Egypt's oil production peaked in 1996, and since then has declined by around 26%. Having moved from complete food self-sufficiency since the 1960s, to excessive dependence on imports subsidised by oil revenues (now importing 75% of its wheat), declining oil revenues have increasingly impacted food and fuel subsidies. As high food prices are generally underpinned by high oil prices - because energy accounts for over a third of the costs of grain production - this has further contributed to surging global food prices.

Food price hikes have coincided with devastating climate change impacts in the form of extreme weather in key food-basket regions. Since 2010, we have seen droughts and heat-waves in the US, Russia, and China, leading to a dramatic fall in wheat yields, on which Egypt is heavily dependent. The subsequent doubling of global wheat prices - from $157/metric tonne in June 2010 to $326/metric tonne in February 2011 - directly affected millions of Egyptians, who already spend about 40% of their income on food. That helped trigger the events that led to the fall of Hosni Mubarak in 2011 - but the same configuration of factors is worsening.

Egypt has suffered from horrendous debt levels at about 80.5% of its GDP, far higher than most other countries in the region. Inequality is also high, widening over the last decade in the wake of neoliberal 'structural adjustment' reforms implemented throughout the region since the 1980s with debilitating effects, including contraction of social welfare, reduction of wages, and lack of infrastructure investment.

Not learning the lesson of history, Morsi's economic plan was to ingratiate himself as much as possible with the very institution, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), that had already played a central role in escalating the country's economic woes.

Last month, al-Ahram reported that a combination of surging food prices, "weakening Egyptian pound" and "energy shortages", had propelled urban inflation to 8.1%. But inflation was also the result of an austerity programme designed to meet IMF conditionalities before loan approval:

"The government, for its part, is adopting an economic programme that involves a string of austerity measures that include reducing energy subsidies that eat up a fifth of the country's budget, and raising sales tax on select items to broaden the tax base. While unpopular by nature, Egypt is pushing the measures to secure a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."

With 40% of Egyptians already below the UN poverty line of less than £2 a day, Morsi's IMF-inspired policies amounted to a form of economic warfare on the Egyptian people. To make matters worse, as Egypt's economic crisis made it harder to arrange payments, wheat imports dropped sharply - between 1 January and 20 February, the country bought around 259,043 tonnes, roughly a third of what it purchased in the same period a year ago. Coupled with ongoing unemployment and poverty, Morsi's Egypt was a time-bomb waiting to explode.

Post-Morsi, Egypt still faces the same challenges, which have worsened under the Brotherhood's mismanagement. In the long term, the country also faces a growing demographic crisis. Currently at 84 million, the population is projected to increase to an estimated 100 million after about a decade.

In this sense, Egypt is in some ways a microcosm of our global challenges. With the age of cheap oil well and truly behind us, an age of climate extremes and population growth ahead, we should expect increasing food prices for the foreseeable future. This in turn will have consequences. For the last few years, the food price index has fluctuated above the critical threshold for probability of civil unrest.

Unless Egypt's leaders and activists begin taking stock of the convergence of crises unraveling the social fabric, their country faces a permanent future of intensifying turmoil.

And that lesson, in a world facing rising food, water and energy challenges, is one no government can afford to ignore.

Pro-Morsi Muslims Fulfill Promise to Attack Egypt's Christians

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Dr. Susan Berry5 Jul 2013, 9:23 AM PDT5post a comment

The Fides agency has reported that Islamist supporters of Mohamed Morsi have burned down a Coptic Catholic parish as revenge for the ouster of the former Egyptian president.

According to the report, groups of Islamists first looted the home of the priest at the parish of St. George in Delgia, which is in Minya in north-central Egypt, then set fire to some of the parish buildings.

“Thank God there were no victims and injuries, but the alarm continues,” Bishop Kamal Fahim Awad (Boutros) Hanna of Minya told the Fides news agency. “The fundamentalists have closed the roads at the entrance to the village. They shout slogans against Christians, they say they want to destroy everything, and now they are trying again to storm the church."

"The local police are helpless," he explained. "I called Cairo to ask for the intervention of the army.”

The attack on the parish of St. George is, thus far, the most serious incident of violence against Christians recorded during the military coup.

Raymond Ibrahim at the Gatestone Institute reports that hours before the June 30 protests began against Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood party, Egypt’s Christians “were once again singled out for behaving like citizens who have the right to participate in the protests.”

Letters, reportedly addressed to the Copts, threatened that if they joined the protests, their “businesses, cars, homes, schools, and churches” might “catch fire.” The letters ended with the message, “If you are not worried about any of these, then worry about your children and your homes. This message is being delivered with tact. But when the moment of truth comes, there will be no tact.”

Ibrahim reports that the letters were signed, “People zealous for the nation.”

In addition, the Gatestone report states that, during a recent television interview, Sheikh Essam Abdulamek, a member of the parliament’s Shura Council, warned Egypt’s Christians against participating in the protests against Morsi.

“Do not sacrifice your children,” Abdulamek reportedly said, as “general Muslim opinion will not be silent about the ousting of the president.”

Ibrahim observes that all of the threats against the Christians mention children as specific targets, “the easiest and most effective way at punishing ‘uppity’ Copts who think they, too, along with the millions of other Egyptians, have the right to protest the Brotherhood and Morsi.”

According to the Gatestone report, Coptic Christian children have been increasingly the targets of the Brotherhood:

Some, especially young girls, are regularly abducted, raped, shamed into converting to Islam and then "marrying" their rapists. Coptic boys have increasingly been abducted from the doorsteps of their churches and held for ransom. Most recently, a 6-year-old Christian boy was murdered by his kidnapper— after the boy's family paid the ransom.

The report goes on to say that notable Islamic personages are on record for threats against Egypt’s Christians. In 2012, Safwat Hegazy, a prominent Brotherhood figure and preacher, is reported to have threatened every Christian who dared vote against Morsi’s Sharia-heavy constitution. In a video of a speech to a multitude of Muslims, Hegazy stated:

A message to the church of Egypt, from an Egyptian Muslim: I tell the church—by Allah, and again, by Allah—if you conspire and unite with the remnants [opposition] to bring Morsi down, that will be another matter [screams of "Allah-hu Akbar!" ("Allah is Greater!") followed by chants of "With our soul, with our blood, we give to you, O Islam!"]… [T]here are red lines—and our red line is the legitimacy of Dr. Muhammad Morsi. Whoever splashes water on it, we will splash blood on him" [followed by more wild shouts of "Allah-hu Akbar!"]

Another prominent Brotherhood figure, Dr. Wagdi Ghoneim, reportedly gave an additional video message, entitled, “A Notice and Warning to the Crusaders in Egypt.” According to Ibrahim, Ghoneim’s message was as follows:

The day Egyptians -- and I don't even mean the Muslim Brotherhood or Salafis, regular Egyptians -- feel that you are against them, you will be wiped off the face of the earth. I'm warning you now: do not play with fire!"… "What do you think -- that America will protect you? Let's be very clear, America will not protect you. If so, it would have protected the Christians of Iraq when they were being butchered!

Ibrahim reports that, a few months ago, Sheikh Abdullah Badr made the following televised statement:

I swear to Allah, the day those who went out [to protest], and at their head, the [Coptic] Christians -- I say this at the top of my voice -- the day they think to come near Dr. Morsi, I -- we -- will pop their eyes out, and the eyes of all those who support them, even America; and America will burn, and all its inhabitants. Be assured, the day Dr. Morsi is touched by any hand whatever, and connected to whomever, by Allah it will be the last day for us. We will neither leave them, nor show them any mercy
.

Ibrahim describes the Christian Copts as the group that was “the most denied equal rights; a revealing reminder of how Islam entered Egypt, with the sword and violence, and why most Christians, over the centuries, converted: to remain Christian was to remain a third-class, barely tolerated “citizen,” who paid extra taxes…and was denied any equality with Muslims.”

Ibrahim then sums up his report:

Sadly, not only do some Islamic leaders insist that Egypt's Christians have no right to protest, but also, apparently, so does the current U.S. administration. Days before the June 30 protests, U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson asked the Coptic pope to urge the Copts not to join the protests -- thus validating Sharia law's position concerning subjugated Christians: they must never complain against their Islamic overlords, in this instance, Morsi and the Brotherhood.

U.S. explodes with 100 anti-NSA protests

NSA-protests2.jpg

Americans outraged by the federal government’s spying programs took to the streets on Independence Day for “Restore the Fourth” protests in an estimated 100 American cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, Memphis and Miami, plus international cities such as London and Munich.

The “Restore the Fourth” national protest was named after the Fourth Amendment, which was intended to protect Americans against “unreasonable searches and seizures.”

The NSA’s PRISM online surveillance program was exposed by Edward Snowden only weeks ago. Americans soon learned that at least nine Internet companies reportedly submitted to government surveillance of their servers: Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL and Apple.

“Restore the Fourth,” initially organized on Reddit, describes itself as “a non-partisan, unaffiliated group of concerned citizens who seek to strengthen the Fourth Amendment with respect to digital surveillance by the U.S. government.”

“The July 4th demonstrations seek to demand an end to the unconstitutional surveillance methods employed by the U.S. government and to ensure that all future government surveillance is constitutional, limited, and clearly defined,” the group explained.

“Restore the Fourth aims to ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the government of the United States of America. This movement intends to bring an end to twelve years of Fourth Amendment abuses, and demonstrate the need for a return to the Constitution. All Americans should stand with them in this cause to protect the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution.”

The group is calling for Congress to:

1) Enact reform this Congress to Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the state secrets privilege, and the FISA Amendments Act to make clear that blanket surveillance of the Internet activity and phone records of any person residing in the U.S. is prohibited by law and that violations can be reviewed in adversarial proceedings before a public court;

2) Create a special committee to investigate, report, and reveal to the public the extent of this domestic spying. This committee should create specific recommendations for legal and regulatory reform to end unconstitutional surveillance;

3) Hold accountable those public officials who are found to be responsible for this unconstitutional surveillance.

The Internet Defense League – a coalition of thousands of websites that sound the alarm whenever there is a major threat to the free and open Internet – organized a major online protest to amplify the efforts of the Restore the Fourth protesters.

Americans are being directed to CallForFreedom.org, a web page where they can share Fourth Amendment themed images, call Congress to demand investigations into NSA programs and donate to help fund television ads about NSA surveillance.

“The U.S. Government has been systematically spying on people all over the globe, violating their human rights,” Fight for the Future co-founder Tiffiniy Cheng said in a statement. “The NSA programs that have been exposed are blatantly unconstitutional, and have a detrimental effect on free speech and freedom of press worldwide. … You can’t disregard people’s privacy, invade their personal lives on a daily basis, and not expect them to fight back.”

The groups encourage Americans to call 1-STOP-323-NSA and urge members of Congress to demand a full investigation into NSA spying.

They’re also asking Americans to electronically sign a letter to Congress that states, “Stop watching us. The revelations about the National Security Agency’s surveillance apparatus, if true, represent a stunning abuse of our basic rights. We demand the U.S. Congress reveal the full extent of the NSA’s spying programs.”

Thousands protest in Bulgaria, the President calls for early elections to quell unrest

About 3,000 people gathered in the streets of Sofia to protest against the Bulgarian government. Protesters marched through the city streets, with a demand of the immediate resignation of the cabinet. Parts of the city have been closed to traffic, reported VoR.

Bulgaria’s president has called for new early elections, claiming this is the only way out of the ongoing political crisis and mass protests.

“Early parliamentary elections are the only democratic solution to the crisis we are in. To tell people that new early elections are a dangerous scenario is to tell them that democracy is dangerous,” Rosen Plevneliev said in his address to the nation in connection with the tense situation in the country.

“Bulgarians are protesting peacefully, which is a clear sign our society is mature. What is most worrying is that there were attempts to artificially provoke ethnic conflicts. This means playing with fire and the consequences could be disastrous. Haven’t we learned anything from our neighbors? I firmly condemn those provocations!”

The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of theState Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet resign collectively over ties with oligarchs.

At the same time, about 150 government supporters gathered in the capital.

In Plovdiv, 200 people went into protest, partially blocking the railway station in the town.

The anti-government protests have been shaking Bulgaria for the third week.

Tunisians have held an anti-Israel protest in the capital to demand a ban on the normalization of ties with the Israeli regime.

The protesters marched on the National Constituent Assembly in Tunis on Sunday, setting fire to the Israeli flag and chanting anti-Israel slogans.

The demonstrators want the constitution to include a bill that criminalizes the normalization of relations with Tel Aviv.

Activists are concerned that the new draft constitution does not include the ban.

They say those parts have been eliminated by Tunisian lawmakers under pressure from foreign elements.

In previous protests, the demonstrators called for the maintenance of Article 27 of Tunisia™s old constitution in the new charter. The Article reads, œAll forms of normalization with Zionism and the Zionist entity is a crime punishable by law.”

Tunisia does not have formal diplomatic ties with Israel. Protesting Israel™s response to the Second Intifada, Tunis broke off ties with the Zionist regime in 2000.

In March, 2012, the leader of the ruling Islamic party Ennahda, Rached Ghannouchi ruled out normalizing ties with Israel.

œTunisians™ problem is with Zionism, not with Judaism,” Ghannouchi said.

50,000 join march in protest at abortion law

Ganley praise for FG rebels brings cheers from crowd outside Dail

JEROME REILLY– 07 July 2013

MORE than 50,000 pro-life supporters marched on Leinster House yesterday in the first public protest since the expulsion of four Fine Gael TDs who failed to support the Government's abortion legislation.

The rally heard repeated calls for the Government to again put the issue of abortion to the people in another referendum.

A large force of gardai was deployed on O'Connell Street as the pro-life march ran the gauntlet of some 400 pro-choice supporters who lined both sides of the street near the Spire.

The "All-Ireland Rally for Life" was addressed by several speakers including the founder of the Libertas movement, Declan Ganley, and Niamh Ui Bhriain of the Life Institute as well as representatives of Youth Defence.

Pro-life groups from all parts of the country were represented at the march, and the numbers swelled at the rally in Kildare Street outside the Dail.

Although gardai said the crowd was about 50,000, the organisers claimed 60,000 people attended.

They said people were still marching past the GPO at the same time as the Kildare Street rally and speeches were under way.

Mr Ganley called on the Government to put the issue of abortion to the people in a referendum, and reminded Taoiseach Enda Kenny that every conscience matters.

He said the Fine Gael leader had made a grave error in breaking his promise.

"This Taoiseach has lost his way in the most fundamental way," he said.

"He has broken a promise about something more than money or power – he has broken his promise on human life itself."

Mr Ganley, who appears intent on forming a new political party to contest next year's local and European elections, said one of the reasons he wanted to speak at the rally was because abortion was deeply personal to him.

"When my wife Delia was pregnant with one of our four children we were told that our baby had 'abnormalities', he said.

"We were advised by a doctor in New York that we should have an abortion.

"The doctor explained that under the circumstances he was legally required to recommend an abortion. Of course, my wife said no.

"Today that child is healthy and happy and one of the four greatest gifts our family has ever been given."

The four Fine Gael deputies who have been expelled, and junior minister Lucinda Creighton, were cheered as Mr Ganley thanked them for "keeping their promise to the Irish people".

Candle lit protest in Seoul 7/5

Protests have continued for several weeks in South Korea against revelations that the country’s intelligence agency allegedly meddled in December’s presidential election by undertaking an anonymous online attack campaign against opposition parties.

Nine agents from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) created hundreds of Internet IDs and wrote more than 5,000 posts on the Internet and used some of them to attack opposition parties and their candidates ahead of South Korea’s presidential election last December.

The Korea Center for Investigative Journalism (or NewsTapa) shared CSV files [ko] containing raw data and their analysis revealing that 658 Twitter accounts have been used by the NIS. Among 237,000 tweets published by the accounts, more than 25 percent of them were about domestic politics and the presidential election. Most accounts were deleted right after the NIS case made headlines around December 11, 2012 and some remaining ones were removed around March 2013 when investigative reports unearthed more details about the case.

While the NIS claims it was a part of psychological warfare campaign against North Korea with the purpose of blocking communist propaganda that spawns anti-government sentiment, protesters denounce it as a threat to democracy and a despicable act that interferes with the election.

Students at 17 major universities have officially denounced [ko] the Intelligence Service as a threat to democracy. Spearheaded by college students, protests erupted in various cities with people condemning not only the agency, but also the police and the ruling party for trying to whitewash the case.

Dozens of Jordanians protest Morsi’s ouster

by Taylor Luck | Jul 06, 2013 | 23:13

AMMAN — Dozens of Jordanians rallied on Friday to protest the ouster of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, calling on the government to sever ties with Cairo.

In a series of Islamist and leftist-led demonstrations following noon prayers, hundreds rallied in Amman, Karak and Tafileh to protest what they said was a “military coup” in Egypt, according to eyewitnesses.

In a Muslim Brotherhood-led rally in Irbid, some 200 activists urged the government to cut ties with Cairo over Morsi’s ouster late Wednesday chanting, “The people want to save Egypt.”

Meanwhile, minor clashes broke out during a pro-Morsi rally in downtown Amman after several Egyptians took part in the demonstration.

According to eyewitnesses and activists, two Egyptians were attacked by a group of unknown assailants while chanting pro-Morsi slogans.

One of the injured Egyptian protesters was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently being treated for severe bruising and fractured ribs, activists said.

Hezbollah Regions Targeted
As Syria War Spreads to Lebanon

ÅÞÑà ÈÇááÛÉ ÇáÚÑÈíÉ

There are ghosts hunting Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, over a wide expanse of the country stretching from Beirut’s southern suburbs all the way to Lebanon’s south and north to the Bekaa. These areas, predominantly inhabited by Hezbollah’s social base, face daily alarms and reports of suspicious objects that may contain explosive devices. These incidents are quickly checked out and dealt with by members of the party or the Lebanese army. Reporting suspect objects or vehicles has become a daily occurrence that reflects the growing concern inside Hezbollah’s areas of influence about their continued targeting with explosive devices.

Hezbollah Targeted in Lebanon by Specters Planting Explosive Devices

Categories :Originals Lebanon Security

Since Hezbollah directly entered the fray in Syria on the side of the regime, it has worked to neutralize reactions such as the ones taking place today. The party has sealed off its territory by adopting security measures that include installing surveillance cameras on all the entrances to its neighborhoods, as well as, some say, electronic explosive-detection devices and roving patrols by members of its security teams.

Hezbollah has also established neighborhood-watch squads that monitor, around the clock, the comings and goings of any outsiders to the area. Yet despite all these measures, an explosive-laden car succeeded in infiltrating the most tightly surveilled of the southern suburbs’ neighborhoods, Bir el-Abed, where it was detonated. Undoubtedly, the most dangerous aspect of the Bir el-Abed attack was the message that it conveyed to Hezbollah’s social base, informing them that their neighborhoods can be infiltrated and that there would be a price to pay for their party’s participation in the fighting in Syria.

Hezbollah is intensifying its efforts on the security level to counteract this message by proving that its intelligence services are capable of protecting its social base’s neighborhoods, and that its followers will never be left at the mercy of explosive devices planted by hostile organizations.

The front on which Hezbollah is being targeted with explosive devices is expanding by the day. On July 16, two of the party’s vehicles, while heading along the Chatoura highway toward Syria, were targeted by an explosive device that wounded some of their occupants. At least two other similar incidents have taken place recently.

The fear is that the factions targeting Hezbollah have decided to open against it a security front that encompasses all of Lebanon, adopting a type of guerilla warfare involving assassinations with both bullets or explosives. According to sources close to the party, the main conclusion reached by analyzing the prevalent data on the ground, as reflected by the attempts against the party and its areas of influence, is that an important faction, and not a mere organization, has decided to wage a wide-scale security war against Hezbollah and its social base in Lebanon.

Bahraini security forces clashed with anti-regime protesters early Friday, leaving several people wounded including a policeman who was shot with a home-made gun, the interior ministry and witnesses said.

Hundreds took part in protests that erupted late Thursday and lasted until the early hours of Friday across several Shiite villages after a call was issued by the opposition February 14 Coalition youth group, witnesses and activists said.

"We will remove you [King] Hamad," was the banner slogan issued by the opposition group to rally protesters against the Sunni monarch, witnesses said.

Police fired birdshots to disperse the protesters, witnesses said, while the interior ministry said on Twitter that "security forces confronted a terror group in Diraz" village near Manama during clashes that left a policeman wounded after he was shot with a home-made gun.

Activists said dozens more were wounded in the clashes, but no official toll was immediately available.

Bahraini authorities often use the term "terrorists" to refer to Shiite demonstrators who regularly protest against the Sunni dynasty despite a 2011 crackdown backed by Saudi-led Gulf troops, sparking repeated clashes with security forces.

On Wednesday, a car bomb exploded outside a Sunni mosque in a neighborhood where the royal court is situated but caused no casualties, the interior ministry said.

After the bombing, the interior ministry announced it has banned a rally which was planned by the opposition for Friday in the Shiite villages of Khamis and Sar.

At least 80 people have been killed in Bahrain since the protests erupted, according to the International Federation for Human Rights.

The IDF has deployed an Iron Dome battery in the southern city of Eilat as the Egyptian army launches a large-scale operation to purify the Sinai Peninsula of al-Qaeda inspired terrorist cells.

The battery was deployed at the height of the tourist season for fear the city would become the target of rocket fire. The IDF has arranged that the city's siren system be connected to the alert systems installed on the Israel-Egypt border.

Egypt's military operation is expected to include two infantry regiments, special forces, armored units and combat helicopters.

New Violence Raises Concerns About Jordan

By Suha Philip Ma'ayeh

A fresh wave of violence in Jordan is raising fresh concerns as the country struggles to contain the fallout of the Syrian war and an ailing economy.

Violent clashes that left two men dead and injured eight on Friday in eastern Amman have created a public outcry after gruesome photos on Jordanian websites and a youtube video showed a few injured shirtless men lying in a puddle of blood. The dawn brawl, which reportedly involved up to 20 men, involved machine guns, sharp instruments , meat cutter knives and attempts to blow up gas cylinders, according to police.

“Eight people were arrested and we sent reinforcement to the scene to prevent a recurrence of violence,” Amer Sartawi, the police spokesman said. “They are thugs, all with criminal records who wanted to settle scores over personal disputes.”

The incident was shocked a country that has its own rumblings of political and social unrest since the Arab Spring.

“Calling it a massacre is not an understatement,” wrote Fahed Kheitan, a columnist in Al Ghad, an independent daily. The pictures are “similar to those broadcast by satellite stations and news agencies on victims in Syria, Iraq and areas of conflict.

But he warned in a column published Saturday that social values are changing and pose a threat to stability.

“We did not want to believe that the society that we lived in for decades has changed. We are still living in denial and we have to admit that the values of tolerance are diminishing and there is no alternative to the rule of law,” he wrote

For the police, brawls between those with criminal records are not uncommon. But tribal violence is now becoming a real burden. Sociologists and analysts the violence could grow as the country continues to face major economic challenges driven by the sharp drop in Egyptian gas supplies, disruption of trade routes via Syria and the cost of hosting more than half a million Syrian refugees who started competing with Jordanians over low-paid jobs.

Sameh Majali, secretary general of the interior ministry downplayed concerns that violence was an issue.

“Problems between individuals happen all over the world and they are not a cause of concern here. They are under full security control and do not have any impact on the stability of the country,” he said.

The government has taken steps in the past year to try to deal with violent protests and outbursts at Jordan’s universities.

King Abdullah II took a public stance against violence in a June speech, dismissing the actors of violence as “inexcusable and alien to Jordan’s culture.”

He also said Jordan’s culture and “authentic tribal structure do not accept violence.”

A Gallup survey published this month showed Jordanians are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the economy. The percentage rating their lives highly enough to be considered “thriving” fell to an all-time low of 11% in December last year. More now are so negative about their prospects that they are either “struggling” (73%) or “suffering” (16 %).

On the same evening the crime took place, notables in Mahes, a small town northwest of Amman, have signed a tribal document that ended tensions between two tribes following a brawl the day before. Sticks, stones, sharp instruments, Molotov cocktails were also used.

“It started with a disagreement between two children over a bike before it expanded into tribal violence,” said one police source. “People are changing and they are becoming short tempered.”

In the same weekend, tribal violence also erupted in Ramtha on the Syrian border midnight Thursday. Two injuries were reported after an exchange of fire, according to Jordanian media

In the south, violence was even more disturbing.

Last April, violent clashes erupted in Maan, a restive city in the south, after four student at the King Hussein bin Talal University were killed and 25 others injured in an armed fight . A few days later residents of Maan clashed with the police over the death of two men.

“Tribes are frustrated with the lack of development project in their areas. They have largely benefited from the state ,” said Amer Sabaileh, a blogger and political analyst. “But now they feel marginalized . Their anger and frustrations over their eroding living standards lead to tribal violence. This situation would represent a real threat to social security.”

Violence is also threatening to disrupt the delicate social fabric of society.

“Not much has been done to curb it,” said Musa Shtewi, a sociologist who heads the Center for Strategic studies at the University of Jordan. ” The problem lies with transformations in society, especially the economy,” he said.

“What is really disturbing is the regional violence which since the past decade has already affected people psychologically.

“People see violence on a daily basis, in the news and they see how countries resort to violence to resolve their disputes, giving it legitimacy .”

Inflation, according to the World Bank rose to 7.4 by the end of last year, due to a surge in food prices, rising public wages and the lifting of fuel and gas subsidies that lead to unprecedented protests last November that called for the downfall of King Abdullah.

Bahrain Summary: Thousands Take to Streets in Pro-Democracy Protests

Thousands of pro-democracy protestors took to Bahrain’s streets on Friday, to demonstrate against the Sunni-led government and ruling Khalifa family.

The crowds called for the release of political prisoners and the resignation of Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman.

The English Twitter account for the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, the largest opposition party, has posted photographs showing thousands of people in a large rally in the capital city of Manama.

Al-Wefaq said that its spiritual leader, Shia cleric Ayatollah Isa Qassim, attended the demonstration.

Today’s demonstrations were preceded on Thursday night by clashes between protestors and police in Shaharkhan village, west of Manama. Teargas was used to disperse the protestors, who the Interior Ministry claim had “hurled stones and petrol bombs.”

Despite a violent crackdown in early 2011 by the Bahrain government, who called in the Saudi military to crush protests, anti-government feeling continues to simmer among Bahrain’s Shia majority, erupting into protests like the ones seen on Friday.

Thousands of students blockade schools in protest against deportation of classmate and French immigration policies

Thousands of French students took part in widening protests Friday against the deportation of a 15-year-old Roma girl, Leonarda Dibrani, who was allegedly taken off a school bus last week and forced to return to Kosovo. The incident, along with an ongoing protest by Syrian refugees in Calais, has put fresh focus on the country's immigration policies.

The students blockaded some 50 schools in Paris and other major French cities — including Marseille, Angers and Grenoble — demanding she be allowed to return to France, according to French newspaper Le Monde.

They carried signs reading "We want papers for all" and "Freedom for Khatchik and Leonarda." Khatchik Kachatryan, a 19-year-old Armenian student, was deported Saturday, three days after Dibrani.

Minor clashes with riot police erupted over the course of Friday's main demonstration, which departed from the Place de la Bastille in Paris on Friday morning, but no major incidents have been reported.

Local police estimated that about 3,000 students participated, but advocacy organizations said as many as 12,000 people had come out in support of their cause.

In a televised interview with Agence France-Presse Friday morning, French Education Minister Vincent Peillon urged the students to return to school. He said school life is a "sanctuary" and should not be upset by a deportation such as Dibrani's but demanded the blockades be lifted.

"Since they want the right to education, they shouldn't block those who wish to enter their school," he said.

But it is unclear whether French high school students will heed his demand. Fears over the growing popularity of the far-right National Front and its anti-immigrant positions are increasing before next year's elections.

"Leonarda and Khatchik don't go to class, we don’t either," one student's sign read.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls weathered a storm of criticism last month after he said Roma immigrants should be sent back to their countries of origin because they had no intention of integrating. The incident drew objections from his socialist colleagues in President Francois Hollande's government.

"These people have an enormously different lifestyle (from the French)," he told radio station France Inter, saying only a small minority managed to integrate themselves, France 24 reported. There "is no other solution than the dismantlement of the camps and the deportation of individuals."

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Dibrani would be readmitted to France if a review found that police had broken rules by arresting her on school property. Valls ordered officials to review the case and will return from vacation in the former French colony of Martinique Saturday.

Meanwhile, Kosovo's Vice Foreign Minister Petrit Selimi, said Kosovar nationals are not allowed to request political asylum in France, stressing his excellent relations with the French government. He reiterated his wish for Kosovo to enter the Schengen accord, which allows citizens of member European countries to freely move across their borders.

The move would help battle illegal immigration and ease pressures on local youths, who face a 31 percent unemployment rate, he told Le Monde.

The Dibrani incident is testimony to France's controversial immigration policies, seen most recently in attitudes toward Syrian refugees.

The issue took center stage last week when 65 Syrian refugees blockaded a terminal of the northern French port of Calais, disrupting a popular ferry and train route to the U.K. They vowed not to leave until they were admitted by Britain, in an effort to escape what they said were undignified living conditions in France, France 24 reported.

On Thursday, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal defended his country's Syrian efforts in response to harsh criticism from human-rights groups, which have suggested that France is not doing enough. "Since the start of the crisis, a total of nearly 3,000 Syrian nationals have been welcomed in France," he said, and French officials have agreed to take in an additional 500 Wednesday at the request of the United Nations.

Germany, however, has taken in 5,000; Sweden offered to give permanent asylum to all Syrians who applied for residency, Eva Akerman Borje, chairwoman of the Global Forum on Migration and Development, told Al Jazeera America earlier this month.

"Sweden is one of the countries that are saying migration is prosperity, it's a way of improving yourself," she said.
